I am debating what to do about the ridiculous tan line I acquired at the beach. I was wearing yoga pants on a 60’F, cloudy day, and somehow managed to get badly burned on my ankles and feet. It’s totally my fault for skimping on the lower body sunscreen! Add in the soccer sock tan I’m rockin’ on the top half and I now have zebra-striped legs. Should I use different SPFs? Wear calf-length socks? Use self tanner in the middle? Try to tan the middle? What do you think?
Mazen and I made strawberry smoothies for breakfast this week, with the strawberries we picked last weekend. I threw in the whole strawberries, green tops and all. They have to be good for you, right? #greensmoothie
Officer Mazen via Snapchat! We just love checking to see what the new selfie filters are each day – some of them are just insane!
Have you ever tried home fermenting? I’m hoping to take a stab at pickles this summer, when local cucumbers are abundant.
The new brand Mortier Pilon makes this gorgeous glass crock that comes all ready to make fermented foods like pickles. Unlike the traditional clay crocks, this one is clear and lightweight, making the process all the more enjoyable. Have you ever pickled at home? I would love to hear your tips.
Sarah makes the BEST salads!! Mazen and I went over for lunch and we had these salads packed with greens, pesto-roasted vegetables, avocados and almonds.
And for dinner this week we went to Brazos Tacos with a bunch of our friends! The yam taco is my favorite there, but the pork belly special with pickled watermelon was killer too!
And the jalapeno marg? Amazing!!! Especially on a Monday 🙂
Play hard outside this week and you’ll sleep like a three-year-old!

A jalapeno marg sounds amazing, especially on a Monday. We have a place here in Charlotte that has an amazing pork belly taco with watermelon on top – it’s one of my favorite dishes in the city!

Forget about your tan lines. It will all even out soon, anyway! Love the sunglasses with your hair and complexion.

I agree! Who cares- I would leave it 🙂 You look beautiful!!

I get tan lines like that ALL the time. I just use a little self-tanner from time to time and it usually even itself out a bit. I sometimes even call the tan lines my “active stripes” Haha! That jalapeno marg looks amazing! I love a spicy margarita! Enjoy this beautiful weather 🙂

Hi Kath, I know you’re a big fan of Birchbox, and they had an amazing self tanner in one of their boxes recently. I would def. check out Vita Liberata Fabulous Self-Tanning Gradual Lotion. It’s fantastic, and will gradually build a tan without the help of the harmful sun!!

Awesome thanks! I wonder if I can request it?

Nothing better than homemade pickles. My grandmother used to make them all the time in a crock and they were fantastic. Unfortunately, I never got her recipe. I have used several different ones that I found online and a couple of suggestions would be not to refrigerate them. I made that mistake and the brine just didn’t soak into the cucumbers and they were soft and rubbery. Watch your salt. No matter what the recipe calls for, I always hold back a little. I’ve made them to the recipe and ended up with a salt lick. (haha) I also add garlic and a LOT of dill. I also used a large plastic container with a locking lid since I didn’t have a crock. Worked perfectly! Good luck and let us know how they turn out. You will end up hooked. 🙂

Jennifer, they’re usually started outside the fridge, but once they get sufficiently fermented/tangy/bubbly, keep them in the fridge.
That’s really good advice about the salt. I recently used a recipe that had half the salt and the other half whey (the water that comes off plain yogurt). I tried that, and the pickles came out really well. It was carrot in that case, and I have some cukes fermenting with whey at the moment. We’ll see how that works out!
Kathleen says
You mean lacto-fermentation? Yeah!

I have to admit that I laughed out loud when I saw your tan lines! They’ll even out eventually and I’d just try some self tanner in the meantime for the paler parts. I have some bike short tan lines starting and it always looks weird when I wear short shorts and have an inch or two of pale skin showing at the top.
Jeanie says
Is it okay if I laugh at your tan even if I have no suggestions to fix it?
Melanie says
I’d say don’t worry about it. I had similar lines from hiking in Grand Canyon 2 wks ago. Wore socks which came 3 inches above boots so similar to yours. Can’t even see it now and that’s just from being outside in my garden since I got home. I do rock a mean flip flop line tho!
Lindsay says
Great idea about using the whole strawberry in your smoothie! Never would’ve done that before reading this. I mean, why waste it? Definitely going to do that from now on.

I use Nkd Skn gradual tanner to fix oops sun moments, or Tarte Bronze Bod if I need a same day fix.
PS – that margarita looked delish!

Pickles are super simple to make and totally worth it. I tried sauerkraut a few times, once the flavor was great, once it was just ok, and once it definitely tasted off 🙁 I used to make water kefir all the time and it was delicious and easy to make, but required a bigger time commitment every 36 hours and I just don’t have the time anymore. Sadly I think my grains died. Kombucha was a bit of a disappointment. It never tasted like I wanted it to and once I forgot about it and left for a 2 week vacation and heard from those staying at home that I basically left a kombucha bomb in the kitchen… glass shards up to 30′ away. Oops… Luckily no one was actually in the kitchen when it exploded…
So right now I buy all my ferments because work 90+ hours a week but I plan to get back to it one day.

Sunless tanner! I’ve used the build a glow stuff before but I’ve heard St. Tropez works reaaaaaaally well, it’s just a little pricey.

For fermentation, sealing is the most important thing. The structure of this crock is not the ideal one. There is a problem of sealing. In US, there is better product which is more suitable for fermentation. A product should first be a problem solution, otherwise there is no value.
