Matt and I did a whole lotta nothing this morning and then set out on a run at noon. We enjoy doing some kind of outdoor activity together every Sunday – from running to hiking to biking.
We ended up running SIX miles – which is huge because it’s probably the farthest I’ve ran all summer!
We went on a somewhat secluded dirt road near our house. Wish we had used it more while we lived here! I would never be comfortable running it alone, but Matt was there to keep me safe.
Like when we came across a COW in the road!! I was pretty scared, but Matt shielded me. Do cows charge!?
Although the sixer was farther than usual, I handled it like a champ and we came in strong. Just under an hour of running!
Another thing we like to do together: eat sardines! I’m supposed to be eating one tin a week for nutrition, but even though I like them I’m rarely in the mood for their fishy richness. My favorite way to eat them is with crackers or chips and we haven’t had either in our house for ages.
Matt makes a killer sardine salad though so he worked on that while I made greens
I ended up spreading them onto a burger – with ketchup! Bun + ketchup = burger!
On the side – a big salad with last night’s dinner salad leftovers
And the Pear Dark Chocolate from Whole Foods Sara gave me last night for dessert!
Hilary says
I don’t think sardines would ever qualify for a burger in my world…you make them look not too bad though (and that’s a compliment coming from an avowed fish hater)!
Shaya (Eye Girl Eats) says
If you slather anything in ketchup, I’m sure it would be edible. Ketchup is the deep-fry of condiments! That’s not to say sardines aren’t edible on their own, but I’ve done a pretty good job of avoiding trying them myself. I’m picky about seafood– not into shellfish, but LOVE actual fish (salmon, tuna, sea bass, etc) when prepared well. Anything too fishy = not really my thing.
Great job on the 6-miler– I’m really hoping to up my endurance to the point that 6 miles would be my once-every-couple-weeks long run, without feeling like I want to die.
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Congrats on the six miles! I ran 5 this morning, my longest since my IT band injury, and felt great! and that’s interesting that you have to eat sardines for nutrition, I’m going to an RD at the end of the week because my mom’s concerned I don’t get the right nutrition and I’m pretty exciting to find out what a professional thinks I should do!
Rosa - Fitness, Food, Fulfilled says
Running into a random cow in the road is hilarious! I grew up on a dairy and cows won’t charge unless they’re sick. They’re one of the most docile animals ever, was probably more scared of you than you of it, and you can totally herd them.
I’ve never tried a sardine before. I love fish, but have always been afraid to try them.
Wendy says
Former “cow girl” here, too. The only other reason I can think a cow would charge is if you were between her and her baby. You and Matt probably just startled her!
Baking N Books says
What a run!
What do you mean by “supposed to eat” a tin a week? Is that for trying to/preparing for pregnancy in the future?
Khushboo says
I think she meant in terms of omega 3’s, calcium and all the other amazing benefits which sardines provide!
Baking N Books says
Thanks, yeah…someone else asked below.
Sweet and Savvy says
That is too funny about the cow! I would have been scared.
Amy* says
I love running with my man! We once saw a bobcat slinking away under a bush while on a run. No cow though.*
Lynda @ healthy hoboken girl says
Sounds like a great way to start a Sunday…enjoy the day!
Alexia (Dimple Snatcher) says
Aren’t the bones so annoying to you?! They slay me. Also, when I was little and we ate canned sandines on the island sometimes we get them with eggs in the stomach. Kind of totally turned it off because a couple times I caught the eggs in my mouth!!!! GROSS. HAH
Ann @ Day by Day says
Oh my gosh- I don’t think I could ever eat sardines again after that!! I eat them occasionally and really don’t mind them, but I have a hard time coming home to make dinner and reaching for a can of sardines… I have to REALLY be out of ideas.
KathEats says
Ewwww!! I have never noticed bones OR eggs – just some soft cartilage that I tell you not to look at while you mash. Nothing crunchy or oozey though!
Alexia (Dimple Snatcher) says
Yeah by bones I meant the soft cartilage! I take it out! You eat it?
KathEats says
yeah!! That’s where all the nutrients are!
kristen, sweetly says
i’m going to need to come up with a veggie alternative to that incredible-looking sardine salad. mama pea had a non-egg salad… my tofu-only mix does not always cut it.
beautiful sunflowers!! i’m glad your sunday stayed gorgeous.
Caroline @ Out of Liney says
S’mores look delicious- just tried those graham crackers too! Unfortunately nothing tastes quite like the Nabiscos of my child hood (oh, preservatives).. Congrats on your 6 miles! Everyone knows you’ve been working really hard, so way to go!
Alice says
I’m not so sure cows charge unless maybe you threaten them or they are sick. A few years ago my friend hit a group of cows with her car (it was late, dark and she couldn’t get out of the way in time). We learned hitting a cow is better than hitting a deer because cows have owners with insurance, still avoid all animals with the car, never a fun experience.
Wendy says
Your friend was lucky. A guy from here in my town hit a cow once and ended up brain damaged and in a vegetative state. 🙁
Alice says
That’s terrible! Luckily she slowed way down, the car was a total loss but she wasn’t hurt at all.
Lauren @ What Lauren Likes says
I have only ever tried sardines on pizza before and was scared off! Haha I should really give them another try, they are really good for you ….:)
Mandy @ The Fat Girl's Guide to Life says
If you’re looking for a new way to eat sardines, Just Bento has a great recipe that I personally love. I use it all the time to stuff rice balls. And you can make a huge batch and stick it in the freezer.
I like it because this recipe dries out the fish so much that it really only leaves behind all the things I love about sardines and gets rid of the mooshy texture that I don’t care for. And the sherry gets rid of a lot of the unpleasant canned fish odor.
You can find the recipe at: http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/homemade-furikake-no-10-sardines-and-pine-nuts.
I hope you dig it! Let me know what you think. And if you have any good recipes for sardines, send ’em my way. 🙂 That sardine burger looks pretty good. What do you put in it?
KathEats says
Wow – sounds pretty amazing! I love the idea of sherry 🙂 I think the recipe is probably a little too advanced for me though… I’m a simple cook!
Mandy @ The Fat Girl's Guide to Life says
Usually I am too. Which is why I’ll make a triple batch and freeze it (when I bother making it at all!). Thanks for the great blog.
sarah (the SHU box) says
on a day when basically EVERY food i can think of sounds disgusting . . . your lunch looks amazing! now i want sardines.
Stef @ Living HI says
Beautiful sunflowers, and beautiful lunch for that matter. Do you find that sardine salad differs too much from tuna salad? Sardines kind of freak me out, but is it possible to make them more attractive?
KathEats says
It’s pretty similar to tuna salad – maybe slightly fishier and much richer
Cait's Plate says
I LOVE those sunflowers…they’re so cheery – and they’re also the makers of pretty much my favorite food products (sunflower butter) so they just all around make me happy 🙂
Those buns just keep looking better and better. So doughy and fluffy…which is just the way I love bread to be.
The sardines on the other hand…haha. That’s still something I have to try to wrap my head around!
Namaste Gurl says
I fell this morning when attempting to go on a run! Can you say clumsy? Yikes, no fun to get scrapped up at 7 am!
Looks like a wonderful sunday thus far- enjoy!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Your vase of sunflowers is so pretty!
Lisa (bakebikeblog) says
Yay for sunflowers and Sunday runs! What a winning combination 🙂
Julie H. of Spinach and Sprinkles says
Way to run! 🙂
….Answer straight from the farmgirl: YES cows will charge. Usually only if they think you are going to hurt their babies though! Most won’t charge you just for the heck of it, unless you are in a confined space like a coral or something. Since you were on the road, you’re safe as long as you don’t threaten it. Even then, it is more likely to run away…. Bulls are a different story though.
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Pear Dark Choc. Now that sounds go good. When i saw it on your smores last night, i was like oh wow!
And the sunflowers…so pretty! I have done an entire post on Sunny things. Including post about 80989 pics of sunflowers in it. ha! Love them so much!
Sydney says
I came across a cow in the road on my run this morning too!! I was afraid I’d scared him and that he’d run after me, but I ended up just scaring him back over his fence!
caitlin says
Are the sardines for pre-pregnancy (fertilitlity)?
KathEats says
Nooooo for calcium, omega-3s, vitamin D and protein!
Kathryn @ Flopoodle says
I am diggin’ your photography today! Love the wood and the sunflowers, and the leaves through the back of the bench. I’m not a fan of sardines but you’re making me want to eat them 🙂
And pear dark choccy?? I’m heading over to Whole Foods right now to find it!
Jessica @ Jess Go Bananas says
Sunflowers are my favorite flower – they look marvelous! I don’t think cows charge, but they are stubborn-they don’t move for nobody! lol
Sarah @ Sarah's Modern Bites says
AWESOME run Kath! I am nursing a running injury and haven’t been able to run for a week… going to see the ortho sports doctor on Tuesday. Hopefully I will be back to it sooner than later! In the meantime, I can live through you all! hahaha Do you think this run will prompt you to do longer runs.. especially now that the temp is cooling down?? (Yay for Autumn!)
A few weeks ago my boyfriend and I were running down some trail roads and about 3 miles in I caught a glimpse of a snake… man I BOLTED so fast… huge burst of energy I didn’t think I had in me!
I think your sardine salads/sandwiches actually look awesome… I love sardines. I think it is because I ate them growing up. My Grandfather would always put them on crackers too… awesome snack!
Maren says
I had my first sardine ever the other night and I didn’t really like it. Matt’s sardine salad looks tasty, but I don’t know. Maybe I’ll wait a while before I try it.
Angela (Oh She Glows) says
Nice shots today! Loving all the angles.
KathEats says
Thanks!
Hannah says
I’ve had several pear dark chocolates but can’t quite bring myself to love the combination. I’m more a spicy or nutty than fruity chocolate person 🙂
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Haha that’s too funny that you came across a COW! The biggest creature I’ve ever encountered on a run is a squirrel! 😛
Lindsay @ Lindsay's List says
I must say…keep the chocolate, leave the sardines!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
i used to be obsessed w sunflowers in high school. remember the perfume?
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
Those sunflowers are beautiful!! Nice job on your run!
Keri says
Just wanted to say congrats on your 6 miles! The sunflowers are beautiful 🙂 And, as a small town girl from Colorado, cows don’t charge, they would more than likely stare at you blankly while you ran past…Bulls might charge though! Either way, it is kind of un-nerving running past an animal that vastly outweighs you!!
Angel7 says
I do not think I could palate sardines. They might have too much of a fishy flavor to them.
http://faithfulsolutions.blogspot.com/
Kris says
I wish I could get myself to do sardines. I buy a few tins, but after a couple of fish, I’m just done. So not a fish person. At least I did get myself to make Old Bay salmon burgers for dinner tonight. Old Bay makes everything better (maybe even sardines?). I love cows, but I think I prefer them on the other side of the fence.
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
Ooooh a sixer. I’d like to pound a three-er out soon 😛 That’ll be an accomplishment. Congrats on the long run, just as the weather is getting a wee bit nicer!
“I’m supposed to be eating one tin a week for nutrition” (about the sardines) – are those your standards? You get a lot of chia and meat/yogurt, annnnd I don’t know what has Vit. D… just wondering why sardines, seems random!
KathEats says
They are one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the earth – especially the nutrients Americans get very little of (calcium, vit D, omega-3).
Fish oil supplements + multivitamin + calcium supplement = $60 a month
Sardines once a week = $5 a month
Cathy says
this makes alot of sense!! Thaanks Kath. I may just buy a tin!
C says
So sardines supply the same levels of those nutrients as if you were taking daily vitamins (fish oil, multi, calcium)? Even just eaten once a week? I will have to give them a try.
KathEats says
Well, no, they don’t have a week’s worth of calcium, but by eating the food sources of those nutrients more frequently you can be nourished and spend less on supplements. Eating sardines once a week and another fatty fish like salmon or tuna another day of the week should satisfy omega-3 requirements
C says
Cool, thanks!
Kathleen says
I ran into a coyote on a run once–it was huge! I turned around immediately and headed the other direction. I decided that was a good enough reason to cut my 12-miler early and go back home. But since I was running in Vermont, I saw a lot of cows on my runs, too. Much nicer than coyotes.
Khushboo says
I love fish but sardines are one of the few that really do not appeal to me! Nice job on the run! I ran 5 miles straight this morning, which is the farthest I’ve gone in a while! Feels fab and I was surprised at how easy it seemed during!
Liz says
You should try “kipper snacks”– they are right next to the sardines at Whole Foods. I used to eat sardines a lot, but I’m now a kipper convert. They are easier to eat, lower in sodium and smoked.
Kristi @ Hiding in Honduras says
My husband eats sardines for after-workout protein – straight from the can on saltines(though here they come packed in spicy tomato sauce). I may try the sardine salad for extra nutrients!
I never run alone here in Honduras because of all the unwanted attention…so it’s always partner runs for us which are more fun! We’ve come across entire herds of cows (in the middle of town!) and just today there was a random mama horse and baby in the road! And of course multitudes of street dogs – I’m now almost an expert and judging dog behavior from a distance! With any animal we always slow down a bit, give them a wide berth, and keep on trucking 🙂
Kathryn says
Where did you get that great pitcher that the sunflowers are in??! 🙂
KathEats says
Pottery Barn in 2006 🙂
Sarah C. says
We love to sub sardines for tuna salad once in a while. I best I’ve found is Trader Joes boneless, skinless sardines. Tastes like tuna!
