I think I slept for 10 hours last night!? It’s the cloudy day – I didn’t realize it was morning!
We came down to make a pot of coffee. I think I am definitely addicted – both mentally and physically. It’s turned into a ritual and I think I look forward to “enjoying a cup of coffee” more than I actually enjoy the taste. But I guess it’s not a big deal to have a cup a day throughout the colder months. It’s got antioxidants after all!
For breakfast I used up the last of the sweetened cranberry sauce (when I make it it’s normally not sweet but I put in a cup of sugar for Thanksgiving dinner).
I also added in some Fage icing. I figured out what the Total tastes like: cream cheese. 100%. It’s just like cream cheese yogurt. So it made a great combo with the cranberry sauce. I mixed it with a tiny bit of maple syrup and nuked it for 10 seconds to warm it up.
I also used this Cran Lemon Zest Honest Foods Country Square (1/4 of it) for topping –
And some walnuts, with a 1/3 cup oats whipped banana base.
Served on a pretty tray, which was taken to the coffee table for some Sunday morning cartoons (a.k.a. Arrested Development)
OH, and guess what I did this morning? I weighed myself for the first time in MONTHS. Curiosity got the best of me and it seemed like a good day to do it. The verdict: 121.4. Not sure if that’s leftovers from the weekend or real weight gain (or leftover muscle gain from all my bike riding or weight lifting?), but either way I plan to eat as healthy as I can between now and Christmas so the number really doesn’t change anything.
I’ve got lots of Organic to do and don’t think I’m going to be able to run outside in this pouring rain. I might hit the gym before lunch around noon and I’ve got a 2pm study date. Hopefully I can fit in some reading to suit the weather.

If you do not mind me asking, how much as this number changed?

Good morning Kath, Great looking oats today. Enjoy your day of rest.

+ 1.4 (on average).
But please don’t analyze my numbers guys! I only posted it so you all would know that I gain weight too and it’s not a big deal for me. I just don’t want it to go any higher 😉
Heather McD (heather eats almond butter) says
Hey Kath,
With all of your bike riding and weight lifting, I’m thinking you’ve probably put on a good bit of muscle. It takes some strong quads to move that bike!
Thanks again for your blog. It inspired me to finally start my own : )

Don’t worry Kath- 1.4 could be from anything. It is normal (for me at least) to gain a couple pounds over the cold winter months…then in the spring/summer they always come off. 🙂

Faaaabulous night’s sleep & breakfast!! And a cute tray as well 🙂
No worries, Kath – you always stay on track, so don’t feel discouraged!!
Good luck studying!!

Very delicious looking breakfast! I love the tray.
Don’t even worry about the tiny weight gain! You are right on track and I think your body is just preparing for the winter months ahead. You need some extra padding to keep warm =)

Hey Kath,
I have been a lurker for a while… I LOVE your blog, your daily bowls of oatmeal, and your recipes (I have tried a few!). You even inspired me to get a food blog of my own 🙂
Lovely cup of oatmeal this morning. It surely makes waking up on a rainy day a lot more fun.

Congrats on maintaining your weight…even throughout this past holiday weekend! The 1.4 could just be water weight…we all know our body weight can fluctuate a couple pounds a day! You do a great job with exercise and eating healthy, so I don’t think you have anything to worry about!
Have fun with all that homework 😉 Just think, only about another month til the end of the semester!

your oats look great! Be happy with the rain, we are supposed to get up to 6 inches of snow by tomorrow!

Arrested Development = LOVE! They’re supposedly making it into a movie now and I am excited 🙂
Good luck studying, that’s my plan as well!

hi everybody!
i was wondering if anybody wanted to come give me some much needed “mental” help (in a general eating disorder sense) on my blog. im pretty sure i have an average of zero readers, and would love some help!
much appreciated <3

Kath I lost alot of weight a couple of years ago and I have steadily putting it back on. What do you plan to do exactly to get back down?
Kath says
Marga ,
Thanks for your comment!
AshleyH,
Just what I said in the post: eat healthy. And keep up my exercise. If you’ve read the FAQ you’ll know that my approach to maintenance is to lose some, gain some. I’ve been a little heavy on the gain some so I just plan to tip the scale (pun intended!) in the other direction. That said, we’ve got a big weekend coming up with the husband’s grandmother coming so I will still be enjoying some wine and dessert.

I am new to your blog so I have some catching up to do….. I was wondering how tall you are? I’m a bit under 5’3 and 126lbs…..I could use to lose about 5lbs (actually love about 10!)…after i hit 40 the lbs. started to creep up on me! Anyhow, your blog is terrific…keep up the good work! 🙂

Have a great day Kath! Breakfast looks delicious – as always!!

I’m glad I never tried Fage Total, cream cheese and I aren’t friends. I love the breakfast on a tray, very b&b-like.
Don’t worry at all about the ‘weight gain’, 1.4 pounds could even just be water weight. Just keep doing what you’re doing and I’m sure it will even out!
Cassidy says
I did the same thing this morning. I have been at my parents for a week. My plan was enjoy Thanksgiving in moderation, enjoy dessert on special nights (out to eat & thanksgiving), and keep my exercizing up. Well I had a plesant surprise. I lost .5 lb. (But not really since it went from 115.5 -115.) and was still in my range of 115-117.
Your weight gain is probably muscle. I weigh more than I did in highschool by a few lbs but wear a smaller size. Maybe shift your exercize from weights to cardio a little during the holidays?
Andrea says
wow 121.4 is awesome! the body naturally fluctuates a few pounds. i would definitely check again in 2 weeks or so to get a better idea. great job over the holidays kath! you are an amazing example of healthy eating/exercising and you seem to enjoy life to the fullest 🙂

As you have previously been appreciative of random science discussion, I thought I’d tell you that coffee consumption has been heavily studied and has quite a few anticancer properties as well. It has to do with the small molecules that are extracted from the coffee during brewing – these molecules are also exploited by scientists to provide us with new antibiotics, anticancer, and anti-inflammatory drugs – and they are quite good for you. I completely think that coffee consumption in moderation is probably better than none. Also, I’m e-mailing you a nice overview article about coffee and it’s health benefits.

Hey, I was up 3.2 at my weigh in at weight watchers yesterday… it happens!
Full fat fage is one of the things my mom used to keep in the house when I was growing up. SO DELISH!

OMG – I love Arrested Development! A few months ago, I got obsessed and watched all three seasons on hulu.com within a couple weeks. Have you been on hulu.com btw? There are tons of movies and TV shows that you can watch for free. It’s awesome!

The cranberry sauce is a great idea for oatmeal. I know what I will be having tomorrow morning.
I gain about 1.5lbs around the holidays, I’ve just accepted it and try to work it off in the gym. A big mushroom forage today should help (the porchinis are out 🙂 !!) Have a great Sunday!

I love hulu.com too! That’s where I watched all the Arrested Developments. Next up is It’s Always Sunny in Philidelphia which is also on there.

I wonder if you could spread Fage Total on a bagel like CC – it’s probably better… If I ever have both in the house at the same time I will have to try it.
Love the fage/cranberry combo. Cranberry sauce is so good – I think I’ll try your unsweetened recipe.

I’m also curious as to how tall you are…

If you look at her about me page it says she is 5’2! That is crazy how different everyone is. I am 5’7 and weighed 120 this morning. Still healthy just differently distributed!

Camera question everyone! My Canon SD750 unfortunately broke this weekend when I dropped it :(. Canon was not very helpful either. They said that because there was a small scratch on the front of the camera they would not repair it under warranty which is a big bummer. For that reason, I wouldn’t recommend buying Canon. But what kinds of digital cameras do you all recommend? Especially those of you who are food bloggers and take pictures every day! I’m looking for one preferably under $200 that is reliable and just a regular handheld size (not like a digital SLR, professional type). Thanks for your advice!
musicfan says
I’ve gained 5 stinking lbs in the last two weeks. I’m 5’2 1/2″ and now weigh 137. Argh! BUT, I’ve done no exercise and have been eating like a piglet, so have only myself to thank. Time to get back on track! It’s the work stress that was the catalyst of the gain.
Julia says
When you say Fage Icing, do you mean you made a icing, like frosting, out of yogurt? How do you make it? That sounds delicious, and waaay healthier!
And don’t worry about the weight thing – it’s most likely the salt and stuff from this weekend, and will come right off!
Kath says
Frannie ,
I just read recently that coffee drinkers have a reduced risk for lots of diseases. Guess that’s a plus! My only hesitation to drink it so much is that I really don’t feel my best when I drink it regularly. But it’s not a huge impact, just slightly more tense in the shoulders and stuff.
Katie K,
I love my Sony CyberShot.
Julia ,
I just mix a tbsp or so of Fage with maple syrup = insta icing.

Lexi says
Kath,
I love your blog and have been reading for quite some time. However, I find it odd that you posted your weight and say you did so in order for your readers to see that you “gain weight too!”. I’m a little confused – as someone on her way to becoming a registered dietitian, you should know that a 1.4 pound gain over the span of months and months is really nothing; you chose to weigh yourself the weekend after Thanksgiving – it’s most likely just water. I would bet it’s not even real weight…and while you did say it may not be real weight, your responses to some of the girls above are disturbing because you talk of how you want to tip the scale the other way and plan to be really careful with eating and exercising. Being careful is a good thing….but it appears you’re kind of freaking out over a number that may not even be “real”. Weigh yourself a week from now after you haven’t just had a big meal…maybe that would give you a better perception. And finally, as I said earlier…as someone whom is studying to be an RD, you should be the first to understand that a 1.4 pound weight gain could literally mean a milion different things and is nothing to be panicked over and nothing to make a concious effort to lose. Maybe if it was a CONSISTENT 1.4 gain, but you stepped on the scale one day. I generally really agree with your philosophies, but this time, sorry, I am just a little disappointed you chose to post the number and declared to be extra careful. Figure out if the number is consistent, and if it is, sure, change it. But in the mean time, your focus on a number is a little strange to me — even if you are 1.4 pounds above the weight you once were, it’s only 1.4 pounds! You eat healthy and exercise religiously and seem to really be living a healthy life style. I just think the message ou are sending is very mixed and very confusing.
Kath says
Lexi ,
I think you totally mis-read my tone. I stated in the post that the “gain” could be a combination of many factors, water weight being top of the list. I also mentioned that it was totally not a big deal. But if you’ve been reading lately, I’ve also mentioned I’ve been snacking more and could tell my clothes were a big snug, hence the reason I got on the scale. And like I said in the post, the number doesn’t change anything – I already had plans to move on with life as normal with a focus on eating healthy. Professionals say those who are most successful at maintaining weight loss hop on the scale regularly and catch gains while they are small, so I don’t see why checking in and responding accordingly is any big deal.
Kath

Kath,
I think I mis-read your tone, I’m sorry! Thanks for the explanation though. You are at a great weight and look wonderful.
