This was my first Sunday in a loooong time where I had nowhere to be now that soccer is over. We had just us and a whole day of warm sunshine ahead, so we made plans for the pool and a cookout!
But first, pancakes. With peaches and cherries. Love summer’s stone fruits!
I did some chores around the house to get things organized for the week. I don’t mind changing the sheets every week, but I really do not like putting comforters into duvet covers. Is there a secret trick to this that I am missing? I generally get the corners in my hands and then stand on the bed to shake it down. I’ve also tried doing it inside-out on the bed, but that way seems harder.
Mazen drove to the grocery store for some items while I cleaned up ; )
We went to ACAC for a quick workout for me and 45 minutes of play time for M and then packed up a picnic and headed to the ACAC Waterpark that’s included in our membership.
We had our picnic first before spending a few hours splashing around.
We shared a PB&J, mini salad, Babybel cheese and fruit. Mazen taught me how to efficiently eat salad on the go: just pick up leaves, dip in dressing (on the bottom), and eat. No fork or mixing required!
We also shared a yogurt and a soft pretzel later that afternoon.
Back at the casa, the yard was primed for a little outdoor playing.
We had Thomas’ family over for dinner to celebrate our news.
We had burgers, grilled corn, and chips and salsa
And Eileen’s famous trifle for dessert!
I was horrified on Sunday morning to read about the events that happened in London. My heart goes out to my English readers. I hope everyone has a safe and happy week.

I totally feel you on the duvet. It’s so hard to put the comforter in there. Sounds like we do it the same way. haha
LisaL says
I trick I do for duvets is put in the top corner, then use a big hair clip to hold it on the outside, then repeat for the other top corner. I should buy a 3rd for the top middle, but I never remember to. It’s a little bit helpful. 🙂
KathEats says
Clips are a good idea!

Look at that gorgeous trifle! I had to scroll back up to look at it again!

My tip is that I don’t use a duvet cover at all! A crisp good quality white sheet is all you need. Put it over your comforter, tuck the corners. At the top, fold the sheet over the comforter and fold your bed sheet over the top of that. It’s what they do in hotels, and once I started doing this, I never used a duvet cover again!!!
KathEats says
You are right that is what they do in hotels! I’m going to see if I can try this with a sheet next week. Do you think a regular king sheet is big enough for a king comforter?
Jeanne Tebbetts says
If you try this, please share pictures, because I can’t quite visualize her description! I just struggled with my duvet and cover yesterday, and this idea sounds great!
Leah says
Yep! I have a cal king and use a cal king sheet. Just make sure the sheet is high quality. It makes a huge difference! Also, if you really want something that feels luxurious, try ironing the sheet first. My mom runs a bed and breakfast and her trick for super luxurious beds is ironed sheets!
KathEats says
Thanks!
Jess says
Guys. Not that hard. Turn duvet cover inside out. Lay down comforter over. clip all four ends (most covers actually have tiny ties you can tie the corners to the duvet.) then flip right-side in.
Carrie this fit chick says
Ah, that grill!!! funny because I had to put a cover on a comforter yesterday and my boyfriend helped/did it himself. It’s not an easy task!
Jessica says
My trick after buying a duvet cover once is…. never use duvet covers again. 😛 Too fancy for me I guess. 😀
KathEats says
Haha!!
Linda @ the Fitty says
Is a trifle basically a parfait made with cake layers nineteen?
Laura says
Wow! That is an awesome deal that the waterpark is included in your membership.. that looks like an awesome pool!
Glad you had a relaxing weekend! Does Thomas work on the weekends, or did he just not join y’all?
Love that you are still celebrating your news! ….and that dessert looks incredible! Yum!
KathEats says
He was golfing 🙂
Laura says
Ahh! Nice!!

Congratulations on your engagement!!! That’s so great!
I had a duvet cover once and probably never will again due to the hassle of putting them on (although it’s super convenient when you need to wash the comforter!) I would actually turn the duvet cover inside out, tie the bottom two corners of the comforter to the duvet using a small hair ties or rubber bands- close enough to the corner so it wouldn’t show when it was on- and pull the comforter through. That way it wouldn’t ball up while it was in the cover, either.

i learned to find the strings on inside duvet corners of the cover and tie them to the loops on duvet! It helps but my son still messes his all up.
Marina says
Hi Kath, could you share Eileen’s trifle recipe? It looks like the perfect dessert to make for the 4th of July!
KathEats says
I will see if she does it from memory or follows a particular one!
Laura says
Yes, please!

Here’s a duvet cover hack I use all the time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH4VhFGCH7A

It’s amazing!
Tracey says
Amanda S, thank you!! I cannot wait to try this.

Looks like a fun weekend. Here is the ultimate trick for a duvet cover..the California roll method. . I found this video last year. Now I love to change the duvets! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1IzS2oBBN0
KathEats says
WOW. That looks easy but it bet it takes practice 🙂 Going to try it soon!
Gretchen Caldwell says
It actually doesn’t. I am all thumbs, but as long as I follow the video (pausing at each step). It works every time! My son thinks it is magic 🙂
KathEats says
it looks magic!!
Tamara says
Hi, please share that trifle recipe if it’s not a secret- looks incredible!

Leatitia says
I was so over trying to fit my duvet into my cover that I just put it on top of the duvet! Now it’s been that way for over a year and I don’t mind it. lol. Lazy.
Lauren says
Duvet covers are the bane of my existence! Last year at 9 months pregnant I was literally INSIDE the cover trying to get it together…lol!
KathEats says
Hahaha!!!
Chelsea says
No one likes duvet covers. I use the roll method now which takes less time but I swear it should be an Olympic sport!
Molly says
I love that plate from your picnic. Does it come with a cover so it’s easy on the go? Looking for a good on the go lunch container for picnic lunches in the park with my kiddos this summer.
KathEats says
It’s this one from Amazon and we love it for all the things!
Kim says
We use the sushi/burrito method referenced above and it’s great! I forget how to do it in between washings sometimes and have to re-watch a video, but it certainly takes less time and is easier to watch the video and do it than trying to stuff it the “regular” way. Good luck!
Kelli @ Hungry Hobby says
OMG he just gets cuter and cuter doesn’t he?!?! Looks like you had a super fun weekend!
Ashley R says
You seem to have the best gym! I wish I lived there! Do you watch Friends? Rachel makes an awful trifle because she gets pages in the recipe book stick together and puts ground beef in the dessert. Everyone had to pretend to like it. It’s such a funny episode!
KathEats says
Haha!!
Christy says
My cleaning lady (every 2 weeks) washes and puts the duvet back on once a month. She does sheets on regular visits. It’s a luxury but as a working mom I would rather spend my home time with my kids. I love her and I’m in Cville if you need her #. 🙂
KathEats says
That is quite the hook up! I’d love the referral to keep on hand if you want to email it to me (Katheats at gmail)
