I picked up some organic strawberries yesterday and at first bite they tasted better than any strawberries ever have! Like strawberry flavor magnified.
The flavor of fruit + berries seems to be more potent than ever, in a really, really good way. Berries are something that I’d normally buy only on occasion this time of year due to the higher price, but they’re so good for me and for my mouth, that they’re worth the cost.
I took a few swigs of this guy before breakfast too. It was so good! Kind of like melted sorbet. High in [natural] sugar, so I wouldn’t down a whole bottle in one sitting (unless it was the base of the meal and combined with fat + protein) but great to have shots of when I wake up parched. There are beets + tomatoes involved too – veg plus!
Breakfast was deliciously doughy overnight oats
- 1/3 cup oats
- 1/3 cup greek yogurt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- Blueberries, strawberries, banana
- Pinch salt, pinch cinnamon
- Almond butter
Plus tea! Still loving the Adagio Peach Oolong.
I’m headed to the bakery for a meeting, and then I might head down to Hillsborough early – we’re expecting snow tomorrow and of course it’s the one day I’m traveling!!

I can’t wait for berry season! I have been buying frozen strawbs all winter…but they’re just not the same as fresh!!!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
You are so right about how good berries are early in the season. I was shocked at the deliciousness of my strawberries this week. Must be thanks to the unseasonably warm weather?
Have a great weekend!
Kori says
Mmmmmmm berries. =D I cannot wait until they’re in season! I hope you have a fabulous day, Kath!

Safe travelling! Have fun!
Jocelyn says
Love fresh strawberries and blueberries 🙂
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I tend to only buy berries in the summer for price reasons, as well. I don’t usually buy organic berries either because we are on a budget. Winter oats usually get frozen berries. My favorite is the very cherry blend from Trader Joe’s… cherries are the best!

Your breakfast today looks so good that I want to jump through my screen and eat it! I was going to have something similar, but after making Kevin eggs, I decided on a veggie omelet. It was good, but didn’t satisfy my craving for a thirst quenching breakfast. Oh well, lesson learned to listen to my gut next time! Have a WONDERFUL Saturday. 🙂
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I love fresh berries. I was so excited when there were blackberries 2/$3 the other day. I HAD to get them. And they taste pretty darn good too! 🙂
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
Can you imagine if BERF disliked oatmeal and made you nauseous? The horror! Good thing that’s not the case. I’m getting impatient waiting for summer berries.
Mary says
I loved strawberries when I was pregnant too. One day at work there was a fruit tray sitting on a table and I sat there and ate every single strawberry off of it – I just couldn’t stop :)!

Lately I’ve been enjoying my berry stash too!

I do love Odwalla juices. Naked juices are good, too, if you’ve never tried them!
Katie says
Yum! I can’t pretend like the berries we get here in England are any good now, but hopefully once summer rolls around 🙂
I had a quick nutrition question for you. Because of diabetes in my family, my doctor advised me to check out the Insulin-Resistance Diet in order to ward off possible future problems. It mainly involves limiting carbs to 30grams within a two hour period and always pairing that with at least 15grams of protein. I was wondering what your opinion as a nutriotionist was on it? Cheers!
KathEats says
Hi Katie,
This sounds wise to me. 30 grams is 2 “servings” of carbs, and I think you’d find it to be pretty do-able. And I almost always try to eat protein and fat with carbs at meals, so that’s also probably more natural than you think. Focus on real food and watch the sweet just a bit – that’s the hardest part.
Katie says
Thanks for your reply! Day One and so-far-so-good!
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Fresh berries are beautiful natural sweetners that pair so well with morning oatmeal! Looks yummy as always! Have a great day! Up in Ottawa for Winterlude and it is beautiful and sunny! Can’t wait to hit the slopes tomorrow!

I always justify expensive produce with all that it is adding to my health :-)!

if you moved to LA, you could have sweet strawberries all year round for $2/pint! and free babysitting too.

Good luck on your travels and hopefully there’s no snow for you to deal with on the roads when you’re driving.
Tastes like melted sorbet but in a juice? I can handle that 🙂
Cait's Plate says
This post just decided my breakfast for me I think! (Except I stupidly didn’t have the foresight to make overnight oats last night!). Regular oats or yogurt it is! 🙂
Emily@ thedoodlebug says
That’s so funny about the strawberries, I’m glad I’m not the only one! I’m pregnant too, and for a few weeks in a row I ate a TON of strawberries. At least it’s a good thing to crave! Have a good day, Kath!
Jenny@vegetarianhatesvegetables says
It’s amazing how some tastes are magnified during pregnancy. Just your body telling you you’re doing the right thing!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Despite their cost, fresh berries are something I just cannot give up in the winters! I always have at least one kind in my fridge. 😛

It’s sooo nice out right now (50s and super sunny)- perfect weather for a long walk with the dog! I wish it would stay- I’m at the point now that I just don’t want the snow to come at all. Maybe it won’t… Either way, safe travels! 🙂
allison @ thesundayflog says
whole foods’ strawberries? we just got the organics in, and they’re on sale for $3.99. from mexico, but no doubt the most delicious strawberries I’ve ever had!! i’m assuming that’s where you snagged yours 🙂
Lexi @ Cura Personalis Foodie says
I can’t wait for summer, if not just for the berries alone 😀
Kalee says
This looks yummy! I am going to try it tomorrow because I couldn’t get used to overnight oats. This looks less thick so I think it may be perfect! 🙂
