I had another round of insomnia last night 🙁 I feel like I did everything right: warm bath with lavender bubbles, dim lights, reading in bed for 45 minutes. I wasn’t sleepy at all. Maybe it’s hormonal? Or just an off body clock from New Year’s. So this time I came back downstairs and caught up on my blog reading 🙂 Around 11:30 I did get sleepy and then all was OK.
Upon waking around 8 this morning I did a 25-minute session of Power Yoga #3. This one was for beginners and it was VERY basic. Almost too slow for me, but very helpful with pose positioning. I do like the sun salutation flows 🙂
I am still believing in magic. My oatmeal photos were waiting for me on my desktop when I finished breakfast! This also means one less program to open (I used to use Windows Live Photo Gallery to import). Loving my new Eye-Fi!! Did you know they also make a card that sends photos straight to your internet photo site like Flicr or Facebook!?
I think my insomnia could be coffee related. Just like last spring, coffee is suddenly unappealing, and maybe that’s a sign? So today I had Coconut Chai Tea that my mom found for me at World Market.
Pumpkin Butterscotch Flax Oats
- 1/3 cup oats, milk, water, pinch salt, (left out the banana today to make them stretch the rest of the week. The oats were noticeably less sweet, but still good with the pumpkin butter.
- 1 tbsp raisins
- 2 tbsp wheatberries
- 1/3 cup pumpkin
- 1 tbsp pumpkin butter
- 1/2 Honey Graham Z-bar
- Coconut butter flakes
- About 10 butterscotch chips
- Spoonful Smucker’s Natural
- 1/2 tbsp ground flax on top
Loving my new wide angle lens too!! This shot was so easy 🙂
I’m having a second cup of tea while I blog. I wouldn’t have taken this extra photo except it was so easy!!!
A little bird told me that ZestyCook is holding a giveaway today!! A book on photography technique. I’d love to win and learn how to make this new camera shine!
Fundamentals of Photography Book Review and GIVEAWAY!
I actually have loads to do today. One of the reasons I can’t sleep might be anxiety of these last few days of vacation before I am slammed with Biochemistry, Food Science, Clinical Nutrition, Foodservice Equipment, and Developmental Psychology…. yikes!!!!!!!
Off to work on this to-do list…
zestycook says
Kath, thanks so much for the shout out to zesty land… a fun giveaway for everyone! You photos look crisper – it is crazy! I hope you have a great morning.

Going to enter that contest now! Thanks 🙂

maybe you can’t sleep so early because you’ve been getting up later? 11:30 is normal if you’re getting up at 8!
Ashley says
I agree, that is quite a load! I took food science a few semesters ago and it is still my favorite class I have taken in college! It’s just so interesting and informative (to me at least). I hope it goes well!
fitforfree says
Interesting – why is developmental psychology part of an RD program? Do you learn about nutrition + brain development?
Tina says
Ok, I am buying Eye-Fi this weekend! Sounds AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
VeggieGirl says
Ahh, praying that you sleep well tonight!!
Good luck with your to-do list!!
Allison K says
I have that same Dell comp screen too..well my employer actually owns it I suppose.
Missy (Missy Maintains) says
The Eye-Fi sounds amazing! I need to check that out! I love your oats today!

Your new camera takes some impressive shots. Was it an affordable camera, in your opinion?
I have to do more research on this Eye-Fi. Sounds like a definite time saver, which I’m all about these days.
WendyF says
I hate losing sleep. It makes every thing out of wack. Have you tried Melaton? I get my sleep patterns all messed up from travel and have found that it works pretty well for the unsleepies as well as jet lag.
If you get the chance, try the Chocolate Chai Zhena’s Gypsy Tea, its also very yummy.
MaryB says
Those pictures are amazing! I swear I could smell that tea! But I was LOL at the ‘exquisite warming spices’! What are those? Cayenne pepper?
A serious question though…may I ask why you always have a spoonful of peanut (or some kind of nut) butter? Is it for the protein? Or just for the taste? And do you stir it in or just lick the spoon? Ok I guess that’s two questions!
seelee live (for the love of peanut butter) says
I think Kath’s nut butter spoon technique is marvelous 🙂
Oats just arent the same without them!
rhodeygirl says
congrats on your fun new things! that card sounds right up my alley. I would have MUCH better pictures if I didn’t have to plug in my camera (which is why I always use my stupid iPhone!)
Stephanie says
Kath — Your new photos look spectacular!! And I loooove seeing your workstation, that’s so cool! Your house is so lovely, and organized, I’m jealous! I probably have some fancy Pier 1 stuff I could give you .. maybe we could do a bowl trade! Haha.
Anyway, I’m so glad the new camera is working for you. Don’t WORRY about the new semester, okay? Thinking about all of it at once is going to stress you out. Just remember, you have control of each and every day, none of them will pass you by!
smilesara says
you’re right…your new camera pictures are much clearer than the old ones. it’s great!
Betsy in Pgh says
So how was the tea??
Katie says
So sorry about the sleep problems! Hope it gets better asap! YUM! That tea sounds great. I’m a huge tea fan and I love the fun flavors you can find at World Market some times.
Meghann says
You have me intriqued with this wireless SD card! Good thing my birthday is just around the corner 😉
Lisa says
Wait, what? The tea came from World Market??? We have those in Ohio (though sadly no EarthFares)!

I got a new Canon Elph for Christmas, too, and yes, they are fairly reasonably priced in my opinion…less than $250, I think. I love it! My husband has a big SLR but we wanted a pont-and-shoot for the convenience of carrying it everywhere. Love it!!
Heather McD (Heather Eats Almond Butter) says
Sorry you couldn’t sleep again last night Kath. I know you’ve enjoyed your vacation so much…away from the stress of school. Hopefully, you’ll sleep better tonight. I go through non-caffeine phases and always sleep so much better when I give up coffee.
Your oats looked so toasty and warm this morning. I’m intrigued by your new Eye-Fi. I might have to look into one of those.
Nate says
You’re going to be slammed with foodservice equipment? That sounds painful.
Moran says
Sorry this is happening for the second night in a row!!!
Stacey says
Ugh! I know how you feel! My neighbor finds it necessary to blast his music at 3:45 AM! I hope you get a good nights rest tonight, and have a great day!
PS. Totally feelin ya on the school stress, its back to school next week for me too!…blegh
Meg says
That is one of my favorite teas. Love all the pics with your new camera.
Jessica says
I’d like your opinion Kath, or anyone elses because I’m not sure exactly what to do. I’m a junior in college and about to start school again monday. I have classes from 8am-2pm every day and then I go to work right after school until around 6pm. Right now, with no school, I usually jog/walk on the treadmill 3-5 days a week for 35 mins and do strength exercises, exercises with hand weights, pilates, etc. most days for atleast 35 mins. Once school starts, I won’t have all this time to exercise. What is the best way to get the most out of the limited time I have to exercise? I was thinking I am going to get up 30 mins earlier than usual to fit exercise time in the mornings. I was planning on doing 30 mins on the treadmill in the mornings and then maybe 2 or 3 days out of the week i’ll do strength exercises for 30 minutes at night. Is this the best plan or what would anyone recommend? By the way, I don’t have a membership to a gym and i’m trying to maintain my weight, not lose. Thanks!
Marianne says
Ooooh, coconut tea! Too bad it’s chai, otherwise I’d be all over it!
And that Eye-Fi really does sound cool, especially if it will upload directly to Flickr!
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
Have you tried warm milk for sleep? That always helps me, and if you just brewed that yummy tea in it, it would make a nice nightcap!
Have a great day!
Erin says
Your new cam cam takes pretty pictures. 🙂 I like it!
Have you tried melatonin for sleep? Natural and good.
Victoria says
I am in love with that coconut chai tea. I really like Zhena’s gypsy teas in general. The pumpkin spice is also really great.
Courtney says
Kath,
You’d think that 5 AM would be a great time, except the gym doesn’t open until 6 AM and even then it’s really full! I don’t really have another time I could go consistently except for the wee hours of the morning. I’m not much of a runner, which is why I typically avoid outdoor running.
Ally says
ah, technology is awesome isn’t it?
That is so cool. I want one. I don’t upload pictures often though, no blog. hehe.
So, you have to have coffee one more day Kath! I want to see what the chandelier coffee looks like with your new camera? I noticed when you took the pictures of the plate you couldn’t see light reflections in the one with the new cam and you could with the old so I want to see if you still get the chandelier in the coffee.
Monique says
kath! I love love love your blog! thank you for your diligence!

Love the butterscotch 🙂

Oh Kath! Developmental Psych was one of my very favorite classes! You will love it.
Victoria says
The new memory card gadget sounds great! I have a question: Do you have milk in your chai? I can’t tell from the picture. I love chai but I have to put milk in unless it is sweet and I don’t want to add sugar… Hope you have better luck getting to sleep tonight.
Sarah says
the eye fi sounds AWESOME!!!! if only my camera utilized SD cards. both my SLR and my point n shoot require Compact Flash memory cards 🙁
soon maybe soon eye fi will come out with CF cards!!! one can dream right?
Camtim42 says
Wow! I just started blogging and already I’m wanting a new camera. Eye-fi sounds so cool! Mmmm your breakfast looks so fantastic. I’ve always love oats, but I didn’t start experimenting until I found your blog! Thanks so much!!
Camtim42 says
Oh! And I hear you on the sleep problems 🙁 I’m trying to cherish every last second before school starts again, but the closer it gets the greater my feeling of doom! Okay, I’m being a little dramatic, but you know what I mean! 😉
Tamara says
Hi Kath,
This is my first time posting on your blog. I’m an RD, and I actually recommend your blog to some of the employees that I work with (I work in corporate wellness/wt mgt) — for great ideas on meals. It helps for them to see ideas in “living color” that there are so many different combos out there in the land of healthy eating. Thanks for the great site. I had a great friend who was almost placed at your college for her internship! I’m glad to see you are taking a psych course– very much needed in this field. Later!

fitforfree ,
I think it’s more for behavioral changes.
Rose ,
It’s $246 at Amazon, which I found to be very affordable compared to the SLR’s.
MaryB ,
PB is for the taste! Although I’m sure the extra healthy fat is helpful in satiety.
Stephanie ,
Thanks for the pep talk 🙂
Betsy in Pgh,
oh, I’ve had it before so I didn’t think to include a review, but it’s amazing!! Almost chewable.
Jessica ,
I think your plan for cardio + weights sounds great. You know what I recommend: first thing in the AM! Get up at 5 if you have it. Exercise is a priority.
Ally ,
Hahah – I’ll try to remember to do a chandelier soon!
Monique ,
Thanks!
Victoria ,
Yes, there was milk in the first one but not the other two. They get too weak to use milk so I just treat it more like water on the second and third cups.
Tamara ,
Thanks so much!
Kath

I love this bowl of oats today.
I’ve had a lot of problems sleeping in my day, usually caused by worrying and stress. I’ve learned that I need to just give into it. I mean I can’t obsess or think about it too much. If I sit/lay there and say, “I’m never going to sleep. I’m going to be so tired,” etc. it just makes it worse. Maybe you’re trying too hard?
runjess says
I haven’t slept well all week! It’s weird, because I’m tired all day long and then can’t sleep when I finally get into bed.
I would buy that tea for the canister alone, even though I hate coconut.
