Up at 5 this AM. Even though I don’t have to get up at 3am, I still have been going up to bed around 8:30 or so when the husband does and reading/studying for a bit. It’s gotten me in bed earlier, which is nice because I wake up refreshed at 5! This morning I made myself late by listening to NPR (which is my newest addiction, partly politics related) so I didn’t have as much time at the gym as I’d liked. I did 30 minutes on the Stairs followed by 10 on the Stat bike and had to skip out on stretching and stuff to ensure I got to spend some quality time with my oatmeal!
This morning’s bowl ended up quite soupy – not sure why! Maybe because I only cooked one serving, or because the cottage cheese melted a bit, but it was still a GREAT tasting bowl!! I think the cottage cheese really sweetens it up even though it’s not that sweet to begin with.
1/3 cup oats, 2% milk, water
1/2 large banana
Vanilla bean paste, salt
3 tbsp wheatberries
1/4 cup cottage cheese
Pumpkin butter, swirled
Honey Cinnamon PB – yum!
Speak of the devil!! After yesterday’s Yerba Mate post, the husband brought home this box of opened demo tea. It’s a Dark Roast flavor, which I kind of liked, but it got a little bitter after a while. I think I need to take the tea bag out promptly, as tea tends to get bitter if you overbrew it.
Here’s me entering Caitlin’s Lamest Workout Outfit Contest. While my summer gear is not bad (mostly tanks and shorts from Target) my winter gear is FRUMPY, FRUMP, FRUMPALICOUS! I wear these horribly huge sweat pants (easy to get on and off to get to my shorts underneath) and the ugliest color old fleece. And can’t forget the cheap gloves! I could definitely use some sleek cold weather gear 😉
Off to Organic, then studying for Micro all day, plus GOTR.

The “lamest workout outfit contest” is hilariously brilliant! There are many days in winter in which it is impossible to wear anything that feels too fun. Although, last year, I was lucky enough to find some workout clothes (from mec.ca) with fuzzy fleece insides….there were entire weeks I wanted to live in them!!
I guess it makes spring all the more enjoyable! But there is always oatmeal to look forward to in the fall/winter…which is so nice 🙂
Meghann says
It’s actaully been FREEZING here and I have NO winter gear! I love seeing what other people wear so I can incorporate that into my work out clothes. Im loving the frumpy look. 🙂
cookienurse says
I hope you win the contest, Kath!
BTW, Today is National Oatmeal Day…hope it’s a good one for you!
gina (fitnessista) says
frumpalicious? haha. i love your contest submission!

caitlin says

Kath, you really makes me laugh!!!!!!!!!!~~~~~~~~
I guess in winter time I all look like you in those pants.

Melissa (the other one) says
MMMMM, that bowl of oats look SO creamy!
I hear ya on the winter gear – I end up wearing a turtleneck, shirt, sweatshirt, AND my bulky winter coat……gotta love Wisconsin 🙁
Madison (FollowMyWeigh) says
lol love your pose! =P
Moran says
HAHA the outfit is hilarious!
VeggieGirl says
The swirl in your “soupy” oats is mesmerizing!!
I’m totally dressed the same way this morning, haha!! 😀
Arianna says
i’m so happy to see you post about mate! i live in argentina, where we drink lots (and lots and lots) of it, both in teabags and loose (the traditional way). it’s a nice energizer that doesn’t cause the jitters, like caffeine.
Lisa says
I must find this pumpkin butter. I keep seeing it in your breakfasts and it makes my mouth water!
Charlie Hills says
That is a frumptastic outfit. I wouldn’t change a thing.
rhodeygirl says
mate! oh the memories! i went to argentina to visit my friend alex in 2005 and we drank mate every day!!!
Megan says
Love your contest entry!
Fancy swirl you have going on with that pumpkin butter!
Lisa says
I love mate I’ve been drinking it since I was a kid! So many health benefits. My mom is from Argentina so we grew up with it.
Random strangers give me a hard time if I’m bundled up already they always give the lame “oh are you ready for a blizzard” or something dumb like that. I live in DC and am from South Florida give me a break 🙂
Lee (seelivelee) says
hhahahaha-i love your posture in the picture, it adds all the more frumpiness!!! Your oats looks marvelous 🙂 have a good day!
WendyF says
Its finally getting cold over here(52 in the morning )and if I did not have to go to the office today i would be wearing something similar :-). The squash looks amazing. I love delicatas and use them to make ravolis with sage butter. Mate is a good find. I take the bags with me on trips so that I don ‘t break down and drink some nasty instant coffee. It has seen me through many a late night projects. happy weds
Heather says
Haha- I just dressed the same way to take the husband to work- except substitute sneakers for uggs 🙂 Hey, it’s all about the comfort!
Good luck with class/studying!
HangryPants says
haha – frumpalicious!
I wish I went to bed at 8:30, but I am a TV junkie. I would be sad to miss my shows. 🙂
Carolyn says
I never would have thought to put cottage cheese in with my oatmeal. Hmmm. Good idea. Looks yummy!
I’m a new reader, just stumbled on your site a few days ago. Your recipes are fantastic!
I’d agree with you on the workout pants….they’ve got to go!!! How do you exercise in them with all that extra material?! 🙂
magpie says
Hahaha – I love your lamest workout outfit!
I’ve been having soupy oats the last week or two and I really like them. I don’t know why. I’m into mushy foods.
That Mate Tea is great – they have a bunch of different flavors. I think there’s a chocolate one that I really like, but beware of the hibiscus – it’s kind of gross. They sell them at this cafe near Cornell and when I was in school I’d get them all the time.
Sara says
Ha ha! That’s a great “lamest workout outfit!” And I know someone mentioned it about…but “happy national oatmeal day!” 🙂

So, I just read somewhere that today is national Oatmeal day! As if we all needed another excuse to eat our oats, but I thought you might enjoy that tidbit! 🙂

Mel says
That picture is hilarious… You could definitely win that contest with that pic! 😀
Beadie says
Hahaha! that outfit is hillarious. What I call mine is not politically correct so I will keep quiet on that 🙂
Danielle says
Love maté! I’d love to bring you back an authentic hollow calabash gourd and bombilla to drink it in. It makes the experience more fun 🙂 and is great for sharing
Biz says
That outfit kills Kath. Those sweats are about 5 sizes too big!
Sadly, my picture will include workout clothes I’ve had since . . . 1986! Probably before many of your readers were even born! 😀
Christin S says
HAHA! GREAT OUTFIT!
I have a theory about why the cottage cheese made your oats sweeter…you know how in baking you add salt to bring out the sweetness more? Or salted nuts to bring out the sweetness in chocolate more? Maybe the cottage cheese had a similar affect on the honey-peanut butter in bringing out the sweetness? What do you think?
Careful with that YUMMY YERBA MATE! That stuff is addicting 🙂
Monique says
kath, you always make me hungry for peanut butter!
Did you know today is national Oatmeal day????
Do you have any oatmeal tips? I like my oatmeal creamy but dont like adding milk… hmmm. It always comes out too runny or too thick.
Kath says
Carolyn ,
Welcome!
Christin S,
Great theory! Also perhaps because dairy is naturally sweet?
Monique ,
Do you put your milk/oats in cold or boil the milk first? Check out my “All Things Oatmeal” tribute page for a video on how I make it.
Kath
Andrea (Off Her Cork) says
Ha! Love the outfit! I have to post mine too, my winter outfit is so horrendous and bulky!
Rachel says
Do you actually work out in all that? Or just wear it to the gym? That’s so much fabric, it’d be so hot and hard to move in. You should really invest in some Under Armour. They make amazing cold weather winter gear. They also make amazing stuff for heat, but its cold now, so lets focus on that! Also…peanut butter sounds amazing… omg.
If anyone is having trouble finding pumpkin butter, go to trader joe’s, and stock up! also, try whole foods or any health food store/fancy gourmet shop… in the jam/pb section, my whole foods sells a local pumpkin butter, McCutchins, I think its called…and they started selling a couple other things up from on top of the salad bar area… all stores vary though. TJ’s is your best bet. I stock up on theirs!!
Sara says
love the outfit!!
kath (or anyone else): i want to bake a salmon tonight, but im not sure how to go about it?
im looking for a yummy/healthy/simple recipe?? thanks!!
Kath says
Rachel ,
Heavens no I don’t workout in the pants!! I mentioned that I have shorts on underneath.
Sara,
I recommend searing it in some olive oil for ONLY 2 minutes per side. The worst thing you can do is overcook salmon! MyRecipes.com will have a bunch of good specific ones.
Kath

I have the frumpiest working out gear as well that I wear on top of my gym clothes. Whatever, keeps me warm!
