Hello from the Hotel Del!! We’re thrilled to be staying in such an awesome historic landmark! Great Harvest knows how to book a convention : )
Our flight went well. I took 3 naps and read The Hunger Games. Almost done with book 3!
These birds of paradise are all over the resort – so hilarious!
Once we checked in, we set out for a late lunch EST and noontime lunch California style.
We found a fun outdoor place called The Fish Company that had fish tacos first on the menu. Sold!
It was, however, way too breezy-cold to be eating outside! I wished I had brought a coat with me! San Diego is tricky – it looks so hot but it’s really so cold!
We had a sushi roll to start – Shrimp Tempura – nicely cooked inside and out for me.
And then a fish taco feast! Grilled mahi-mahi for me with a fruity onion-free salsa they made from scratch for me!
So California fresh
We are departing for Temecula for a party at the GH owners’ house there in just a few!

Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
I love the first picture of the clock – there’s something about the lighting and colors that makes it look so old-timey California. The sunshine looks beautiful! Hope you’re having a great time so far!

I love San Diego, I was down there in January and you are right, it is so tricky. It looks all sunny but its actually chilly. Be sure to tour the historic district if you can.

I am very, very jealous of this trip! San Diego is up there on my places-to-go, and you just solidified why: great scenery, great weather, and great food!

Hey, love your blog. Please give that wild woman Karen a hug for me. Now I know why I never hear from her any more – she’s having too much fun with you guys! Congrats on the baby, restaurant, new home, and everything! (I’m an old college chum of Karen’s, met you &Matthew @Davidson once)

Karen and I say hi!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I’ve stayed there, it’s a gorgeous hotel! Granted, I barely remember it since I was probably 7… I do, however, remember the horrible sunburn I got. Have fun in sunny SD!
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Have fun in Temecula! I love it there…too bad you can’t fully partake in the wine-tasting experience, but it’s beautiful up there and you’ll love it!
The Hotel Del…always a class act. Not sure if you’re going to be there tomorrow morning, but their Sunday brunch is legendary.
I have eaten at the Fish Co. many times..and your sushi looks fab.
And yes, San Diego is tricky…looks warm ‘n toasty but it can be downright chilly. I tell people, picture New England football season weather in the winters here, crisp and cool..we just happen to have palm trees 🙂
Brandy says
I think one thing when I hear Temecula…. WINE TASTING!!! 😉 hope you have time to check out one of the wineries there! BEAUTIFUL!

Hotel Del is amazing. Unfortunately we did not stay there, but we did have dinner at 1500 Ocean. The food was fantastic. I highly recommend the seasonal sorbet trio. The raspberry sorbet was one of the best desserts I have every had. So simple, yet absolutely phenomenal.
Erin Motz says
Enjoy San Diego! You’re a trooper on that lengthy plane ride! I can’t sleep at all on flights, which makes me a joy to be around. ;-]
Heidi Bundles Of Hugs says
Ugh, that looks fresh and yummy! Love that hotel and the beach it’s on. I made the same mistake and didn’t take a sweater or jacket when we went to San Diego. Luckily there are lots of shops to pick something up. Have fun!
Kris says
I too found out the hard way how cool the weather can be in San Diego. My first visit to my sister was years ago when she lived in Coronado. I dressed for warm weather and had to borrow sweaters and sweatshirts from my sister to keep warm. It was especially cold at the beach! I love that my sis still lives in SD so I can get out there once in a while. Have a great time!
[New Balance] Nicole says
That place looks beautiful! Have fun!
Elisabeth says
Oh girl I’m so jealous of this trip! My family vacationed at Hotel Del (I learned to surf there!) a few years ago, and in January I went to a wedding in La Jolla that had the reception at Hotel Del. It has the coolest history behind it – so many old Hollywood stars used to stay there!
Enjoy it and take lots of pictures so we can vicariously enjoy the gorgeous Cali coast 🙂
Lee says
I had drinks at the Hotel Del before a few years ago when friends of mine got married on Coranado. It was nice.
What do you think of Mockingjay? I just finished the series and while I loved the first book, I was really disappointed in the third (the second was okay).
KathEats says
Loved first. Liked second. Third… meh
Maureen says
I LOVE Hotel Del!! One of my best friends got married there 2 years ago. BEST wedding location ever! 🙂

Simply Life says
oh that hotel looks fabulous! have a great trip!
Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach says
Ah I’m jealous, Kath! The Del is one of the most beautiful spots in San Diego. When I visited, it was the first place I’ve ever been that made me daydream about my wedding day because it would be such a prefect place to get hitched. Make sure you eat some authentic Mexican while you’re in SoCal (with lots of cheese of course!). Have fun!
Lily says
Yum yum yum! Looks like you’re having a great time.
Sonia the mexigarian says
Yayon being in SD! I loved living down there and hotel del is amazing. Temecula wine country is a fun place too. It is definitely warmer inland. Enjoy your time down there! Ooooh just started the first book of the hunger games. So far so gooooood.

Elisabeth says
What a beautiful hotel! I’m definitely wishing I were there right now, instead of cloudy, 20 degree Ohio 😉 Karen looks wonderful, by the way!
Mauimandy@The Grains of Paradise says
Omg…Such memories at the Del! I went to SDSU ( mid-90s yikes! ) and we use to camp sometimes at the beach in front of the resort. We would also try and “sneak into” the pool areas but always got caught and asked to leave….so embarrassing! I’m assuming our backpacks and non-Del beach towels gave us away. I once got busted/and escorted out for rollerblading on the hotel grounds too. Haha! Oh to be 18 again….Aloha 🙂
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
The Hotel Del Cornado is just incredible. I’ve been there and it is just wonderful, like stepping back in time!
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
There aren’t many (savory) foods that I love more than fish tacos- and San Diego would definitely be the place to get them! Lucky girl.:)
Megan Jones says
I can’t believe that you got to stay at the Hotel Del Coronado! It is so beautiful and so characteristic of the area. My brother has lived in San Diego for nearly 5 years now and I love getting to go visit him. I hope you have some time to check out downtown. Little Italy has some great mom and pop resturants that taste like you have just been on a transatlantic flight!
