Did anyone know we were getting a BLIZZARD!?!?!? I had no idea until I started to snow this afternoon!!!
We’ve got 2 inches already and counting
[PS. That’s not my house!]
Matt and I enjoyed hot tea while we watched The Office this afternoon. I snacked on pumpkin heated up with cinnamon and topped with TJs train mix. The choco chips melted in and it was an awesome combo!
We almost canceled our dinner plans when we noticed that our road was covered in white, but Matt was so excited that he made us go anyways. The roads weren’t icy at all so it seemed OK to drive, but we just saw a bad accident on our way home 🙁
The destination was Cantina 1511!
With Kelsey + Eric and Amanda + Justin!
I wasn’t going to drink tonight, but in the moment I ordered a Dos Equis Amber on draft. Took me right to Mexico!!
[I drank about 75% and give the last bit to Matt.]
You should have SEEN the mountain of chips they presented our table! Talk about a super-sized portion since the last time I was in a Mexican restaurant
It was bigger than my head!
Chips in Mexican restaurants are the #1 reason they are so fun, so I refuse to limit myself from partaking. However, I do try to select the smallest chips to minimize the amount I eat in volume. My hand is going to go in there 100 times whether I eat huge chips or small breaks, so might as well take the small breaks!
I had a fair share of chips, but didn’t feel like I ate too many.
I liked the red best 🙂
For dinner I debated between…
Vegetable Picadillo Enchiladas: Grilled vegetables, mushrooms, goat cheese, salsa verde, and ranchero salsa. Served with Mexican vegetable rice and black beans – $11
and
Pescado Yucatan: Grilled fish of the day [Mahi Mahi] with spicy habanero pico de gallo, pickled red onions, and black bean and plantain mash. Served with steamed corn tortillas – $18
I ended up going with the veggie enchiladas because 1) they were less expensive and 2) I was intrigued by the goat cheese and 3) the fish required too many onion modifications. But I subbed in the Black Beans and Plantain Mash for the regular black beans.
However, I was actually really disappointed. I never order rolled up things in Mexican restaurants – I usually go with fajitas or a salad of sorts – and now I remember why! The tortillas – which I thought would be dry and flour – were really greasy and corn. And the goat cheese was more like a dry ricotta – ew. And the veggies were not well cooked so I could taste the onions way more than I wanted to! I ate about 1.5 of these and gave the rest to Matt.
The black bean + plantain mash was AWESOME. Like sweet, mashed black beans. Might have to try this at home! I ate about 75% of this delish bowl – with a few chips dipped in!
Matt shared a bite of his shrimps
And Amanda, her burrito!
I know that I ate a lot density-wise tonight, but I think this is the least full I have ever been leaving a Mexican restaurant (even though I am still full!)! I think that just means I uuuusually leave absolutely stuffed 😉
Going to enjoy this snowy surprise of an evening in my PJs with a book!
Paula says
Enjoy the peaceful snow! You had me with that mega bowl of chips! Green salsa 🙂 It all looks so good!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Gosh that burrito is HUGE!!! Sorry you had a disappointing dinner but the black beans/plantains sounds amazing. And those chips are addicting. Props to you for not going overboard.
We have 2 inches and counting right now too… its so pretty but honestly? Tired of it. I think this is the most snow we’ve gotten in the past few winters. At least it didn’t stop you from going out tonight!
Sandy says
Hah i LOVVEE mexican restaurants- i always get a cheesey burrito- its just waay too good to pass up! a once in a while indulgence…
how would u suggest controlling chip intake?i always end up eating way too many 🙁
Kath says
Unless you eat Mexican every night, I say eat the chips as you want. But use my tip to pick the smallest ones out of the basket
Danielle (Coffee Run) says

Is it even possible to eat mex without onion?
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
Girl I keep telling you to keep your snow up there! We are getting some in Wilmington right now! Big fluffy snowflakes 🙂
Darryn (briogusto) says
Wow – I cannot *believe* the size of those chips! You’re not kidding when you say they’re bigger than your head! And people wonder why they, too…are “supersized”….
Abby says
MMM I love nachos!! Snow…not so much. Too bad I live in PIttsburgh.
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
I’ve never heard of someone eating plain canned pumpkin – healthy snack for sure.
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
All that snow looks so pretty. I”m jealous that we haven’t gotten any and I live in Massachusetts.
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Enjoy that snow! 🙂
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
We’re getting snow here too!! I thought it would just be a wintry mix as predicted. I hope it doesn’t make everything shut down though!!
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
Mmmm I’ve been craving Mexican food lately and you’re making it even worse! Maybe tomorrow… I can’t hold off much longer. 😀
Jules @ eatdrinklivelearn says
Ooh, chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants is one of my biggest weaknesses! I always say ‘I’ll just have a few’ and I end up eating way too many. That plantain mash looks really interesting. If you end up trying it at home, please post the recipe!
GurlOnA"Diet" says
grr i hate it when that happens! 🙁 at least the chips were good! i love that about mexican restaurants too!
Ally (Exercise and Pies) says
Georgia got hit too!!
And Mexican places are SO hit or miss. Sometimes they are awesome and you have to roll me out the front door and at other times they are so blah that I just munch on chips
Andrea says
Aw, I hate it when I get a bad restaurant meal. It looks like you still had a great time with your friends!
Tiffany says
wow, you guys got snow?? what a surprise! sorry the enchiladas were greasy and not so good… but those are a LOT of chips!! i totally scout out the smaller broken pieces when i eat tortilla chips too! it makes me feel like i ate a lot less than i would have otherwise.
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
I specifically remember the news lady saying this storm would miss us…wrong!! 3rd Friday in a row with snow!!
Ameena says
Crazy weather! The chips look great…sorry the rest of the food didn’t pan out. Great idea with the chips though. I try to keep a count but lose it somewhere around 25!
Kristine says
wow! You have more snow than us in new england! That’s crazyness!!!
Ariffa says
I just realized that I have not been to ONE Mexican restaurant, it doesn’t seem like there are very many of them around where I’m from =( Bummer about the blah dinner, but your snack looked yummy!!
Diana says
So glad you guys still got to go to dinner! I ended up not doing my zumba event b/c I’m still feeling icky. Hot tea time for me. Have a great weekend! 🙂
Jil says
You’ve gotten more snow than we have in Massachusetts! Crazy!!
Whitney says
You looked like you had a wonderful night in the winter wonderland. The mexican restaurant seems fantastic and I would love to try that beer!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
mmmmmmmm i love good mexican food! hope you guys have a snuggly saturday with all that snow 🙂
Cole says
Chips are definitely the best part about going out to Mexican. Yum.
Fallon says
I do the same thing with chip baskets, go for the small pieces 😉
Cates says
I love going out for Mexican, and that burrito looks awesome! I usually just take out some chips onto my napkin; that way I can munch away while I chat without worrying about mindlessly overdoing it. I have to think twice before going back into the chip basket for more, and usually I don’t.
RhodeyGirl says
I am so happy for you Kath!!! Real snow!!!! Enjoy it while it lasts.. everyone deserves to get snowed in now and again!
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
I would have been disappointed with corn tortillas, too! 🙁 Flour ones are much better, IMO. Matt’s shrimp and that burrito looks awesome though! Am I the only one who isn’t crazy about chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants? I eat a few but they just don’t interest me. Probably because I’m so used to bread + buttah lol 🙂
Jenn
Karla says
I’m not a huge fan of mexican food! Honestly, I think the chips are the best part and sadly that’s not too healthy but okay for a treat every now and then 🙂
Katie says
I am the SAME way at Mexican restaurants! My boyfriend and I finally agreed to not request a second basket of chips….and the last time we went, they just brought us one without asking if we wanted a refill! Of course, we polished those off too 🙂
Jamie says
i really have a tough time at mexican restaurants too – its just SO much food (and delicious food too!) I’m sorry your entree was disappointing; takes away from some of the fun of eating out 🙁
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i think chips are the best part about eating out mexican food too – and they’re free!!!
OC2Seattle says
The chips at Mexican restaurants are always my downfall – so irresistable!
Freya @ foodfitnessandfreya.wordpress.com says
I’m sorry your meal was disapointing :(That burrito looks good though! I’ve never been to a Mexicsn resutaurant or eaten Mexican food, I would so love to! The flavours sound delish 🙂
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
So jealous of all your foods today!
Pumpkin is 5 euro a can here in Paris…so about 7.50 dollars for a tiny little can. Yahhhh, won’t be having any pumpkin til May!
And Mexican food! My very favorite!! Mexican food…we will reunite in May, also.
What a fun day!! (We DO have snow here in Paris, however! Stay warm!!)
Hannah says
Enjoy being snowed-in! That black beam and plantain mash sounds so good – I wish we could get things like that in Australia! I hope you make a version soon so I can follow suit 😛
Hannah says
Or bean, even…
Jen says
Wow…. I love Mexican food! We have the BEST Mexican restaurant here even though it’s this tiny town full of oilmen and farmers. It’s such good food, if you ever come to Canada you need to go to Las Palmeras!! Your food looked really good though!!
Wendy says
Found you on FoodBuzz – we are in Waxhaw – can’t belive the snow!!!!

I just found your website and am delighted that we have a very similar story. I too slowly gained weight in college and just recently lost the weight and feel amazing. I love real food and I love to cook! So happy I found your blog!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
I can’t get over how much snow you guys are getting!!
I love your advice on eating out…I think a lot of people deprive themselves in an effort to be “healthy”, only to feel incredibly unsatisfied. It’s all about balance, balance, balance. 😀
Retrokali says
We are in Winston, this snow is nuts!
I love the tip about taking smaller chips!
Sarah says
I thought I was the only person in the world who ate the smaller chips in the bowl as a way of reducing overload….also, when eating any form of tortilla/pita/Sun chips out of a bag, I go straight for the bottom crumbs. My friends and I call them “chiplets.” Yummy salty goodness…..
Katie@ Two Lives, One Lifestyle says
Wow that is a huge bowl!! I do the same small chip move. Sometimes people ask why I’m eat the crumbs… they aren’t THAT small!
Sophie says
Wow. The black beans + plantains look delish!
The Healthy Apple says
Yumm; I love Mexican restaurants…your eats look delish…gotta love the chips! Enjoy your weekend, Kath…
Lucy says
My hubs and I had Mexican last night too! I used to work at a Mexican place and I’m pretty sure enchiladas generally come with corn tortillas unless it says otherwise – I usually ask them to sub corn out for flour. Also, sauce on top helps! I am a little bit obsessed with Mexican food, can you tell!? Oh, and the mashed black bean mixture looks great!
Diana says
Suddenly I NEED to grab a bag of Tostitos!
Carolyn says
When it snowed here a couple of weeks ago, nothing was open. The restaurants had to extend Restaurant Week since they’re busy weekend was ruined. Unfortunately, the same thing happened the next weekend. 🙁 I’m still excited about all the snow we’ve been getting, though. SO unusual.
