We have our first big snow day of the year today! We got maybe 5 inches overnight – just enough for some epic sledding.
I started the day early – watching the Bachelor in bed, which was glorious! This has been my favorite season yet. Hope it ends well!
Mazen woke up and we made eggs, fruit and toasted roll before donning our ski gear to head outside.
Mazen didn’t really love the snow. I mean, snow is kind of annoying! It’s hard to walk, cold, and not as fun as playing with trains. But we encouraged him to come try out the sledding, which he sort of liked. I think in another year we will spend the whole day outside!
We trekked to First Baptist Church, which my friend Lara has been telling me for years has the best sledding hill. She was right!! It was the perfect steep decline with plenty of white space below to slow you down.
I finally got enough courage to run and dive off, which meant I landed clear across the parking lot!
We took M down a few times, and he enjoyed it in the moment, but he just wasn’t that impressed. Especially with the climb back up.
Across the way there is this HUUUUGE hill that some of the bigger kids were going down. Matt and I both tried it out, and WOW – I ended up with an ear packed with ice!! It was as steep as a roller coaster and just as fast. I’m tempted to go back later during naptime and get in a few more runs : )
We ended up hanging out at our neighbor’s house for a while once we got back home and then came in for a late lunch. I had a salad topped with leftover crockpot chicken, Babybel cheese and pineapple.
And you guessed it – a beer. With Matt home and all the excitement in the air, it felt like a holiday. The Three Notch’d Hydraulion Red is my current favorite local beer!
Matt and I are back to work, and Mazen is attempting a nap.
What’s the best sledding experience you’ve ever had?
Jenn says
well it kind of is a holiday, happy mardi gras!!
KathEats says
Oh yeah!!! Happy Fat Tuesday!
Liz says
I love the attempting a nap! I feel like that is my life 🙂 what does mazen typically nap these days at 2.5 years old?
KathEats says
some days it’s still 3 hours other days he just plays in his room for a bit. We have quiet time every day regardless.
Tara | Treble in the Kitchen says
So cute! I haven’t been sledding in what seems like forever…looks like I’m going to have to find an excuse to get out on the hills! We just got a ton of snow here in Denver!
Sally says
Burley Middle School has the best hills for sledding!
KathEats says
Oh yeah – you’re right there are some good ones there! I’ll have to check those out next (only problem is snow = no driving!)
Elise says
We just had our first real snow of the winter yesterday here in Missouri, but I haven’t gotten to go sledding in it yet. I’m planning to go tomorrow!
How did you get lucky enough to have Matt home for the day? Looks like you had fun sledding!
KathEats says
Not many people were out buying bread this morning – the south shuts down! We did have one of our guys go in and bake though, so the bakery is open.

I’m with Mazen. I’m not impressed with this cold snowy weather. It can kick rocks! 🙂
CATHY says
I agree with Mazen too. Stay inside and play trains and drink hot chocolate by the fire.
KathEats says
That’s what we’re doing now!

Sleds mean strongman class! We push metal ones with weights on them, low push, up astro turf! We’ve never had enough snow here in Ireland in my time anyway to have sleds! Looks like so much fun! Love your headband!!!
Erin @ Her Heartland Soul says
I’m glad you enjoyed a fun snow day!
Livi @ Eat, Pray, Work It Out says
Looks like fun!!! I love a good sledding hill 🙂
Cheri @ Overactive Blogger says
We had a snow day too! I am watching the Bach too – I definitely cannot look away. And I don’t understand how these girls can wear so much makeup all the freaking time!
KathEats says
Haha. And sleep in it! And wear half a shirt!
Jeanie says
Oh Em Gee, you look like you’re going to fly off a cliff in that video. I don’t live in snow country and can only recall sledding once on a trip with friends when I was a teenager. Fun!
Linda @ The Fitty says
I’m truly loving the snow, but lately the roads and pavement have all been salted and the snow’s melted slightly from that. Other than that, it’s been extremely cold this past weekend that it didn’t even snow!
Hannah @ eat, drink and save money says
The picture of Mazen smiling before going down the hill is adorable! Glad you guys had fun. I’ve never been sledding. In fact, I’ve never seen soft snow, just frozen over snow. I hope Mazen continues to enjoy it!
Cassie says
Haha, if you’ve ever been to California you know we get no snow here! XD
Sam @ Grapefruit & Granola says
Your description of Mazen’s experience with sledding reminds me of when I was little. I would always go with my brother, who is 4 years older than I am, and generally just remember being cold and trying to walk through the snow. Hopefully he will start to love it in the next few years!
Ashley @ Saving Money in your Twenties says
hahah, love your excitement over snow and sledding… your excitement makes up for mazen’s lack of it 🙂

Kath, I am a long time reader and “28 years” and “beach bums” youtube videos are my favorites. I know your life has changed so much since then but i hope you would post more little videos soon. i know so much has changed but I really enjoy your blog so much. Thank you for sharing with us.
KathEats says
Haha those videos! I will attempt more 🙂
Emily @ Life on Food says
Little kids all bundled up are so cute. Looks like a great snow day – snow over night and then a sunny day to enjoy!
Eva says
in my old neighborhood, there was a valley by some of the houses which made for a SUPER steep slope down and all the neighborhood kids would always head out there after a big snow storm– what made it extra fun was that we would build a mini “hump” near the bottom of the slope so that your sled would “fly” over it. awesome times!!
KathEats says
I did about an inch of flying yesterday and that was good enough! Scary!
Amanda @ Life To Table says
So mad the one day we actually had snow I’m away and unable to enjoy it 🙁
Natalie says
Well, seeing as I’m in Massachusetts, sledding off roofs has been a new and enjoyable experience 😀 It has the bonus of removing snow from them, too! Better than paying someone to do it!
KathEats says
Haha wow!
Maryea {happy healthy mama} says
I come from the UP of Michigan, where there is always tons of snow. We had a giant hill that I loved sledding on growing up. There’s nothing like it here in OH.
Regina says
This years sledding! Were a few hours north of you in maryland and our oldest is a few weeks older than M (August 19, 2012). He absolutely loves the snow and freaks out at even the smallest hint of it. This latest storm was his favorite and during little brothers nap time we got to take him out solo with mommy and daddy. Seeing his excitement, hearing him yell “wheeee” and seeing the endless smile on his face was truly priceless. Watching him sled alone made me equally sad at how big he is already and proud of how much he can already do. It’s true, having kids makes the little things feel special.
Christine says
Massachusetts is a mess with snow. Its times like this when I wish we lived in the South! You guys have the perfect amount of snow!
This wasn’t the best sledding experience but it’s one I won’t forget. Back in college a few of us went sledding down this huge hill, we were flying down it….so fast in fact that my friend went right into a rock wall and hit her head! We had to bring her to the ER…thankfully she was okay!
Oh the bachelor, such a guilty pleasure! I tried getting my husband to watch it with me last night but he wasn’t having it so I’m going to watch it during my lunch break today!
Amanda - Small Home Big Start says
Growing up, we had a huge toboggan hill in our backyard that led our to our ice rink on the river. We could only go down it when the water was completely frozen, but otherwise it was great. Some years my dad would hose it down to make it extra slick as we got older. You better believe all the neighbourhood kids came over for a run after a big snowfall. Such great memories!
Randy says
This isn’t our favorite Bachelor, not exactly sure why but it is fun to watch just the same.
I love all of the snow pics, how fun!
Wish we had some snow but we don’t so we will just enjoy looking at yours.
joelle (on a pink typewriter) says
I am obsessed with the Bachelor! Some of those girls have been crazypants/drama queens, but for for the most part I like them this season!
