Kelsey and I are meeting at Yoga One again today for a 90 minute flow class. I’m so excited about being all hot again because I’ve been freezing since I got up this morning. No idea why I choose a frozen smoothie to start my day!
Last week I had oat bran before yoga, and felt a little too full upon the start of class, so I thought today would be a good smoothie day. I love smoothies, but they don’t fill me up as much as a solid breakfast (and liquids leave the stomach faster than solids, so it’s no wonder they don’t hold me over as long either).
I also thought today would be a fun day to try one of the Vega Smoothie packets I got to sample. You guys know I don’t believe in powders, but I figured you can’t knock it until you try it, right?
This is about as good as you can get in terms of being plant-based and all natural – yellow pea protein, hemp and brown rice protein lead the way of a handful of “green foods". For 120 calories, 14 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber, this powder packed a lot in.
My smoothie included:
- 1 ripe banana
- 1/3 cup raw oats
- ~1/2 cup frozen berries
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup water (as recommended by the smoothie packet)
- a handful of ice
- 1/2 tbsp flax
Other than making me freezing, it tasted great. I LOOOOVE oats in smoothies! I can’t wait to make another Tofu-Oat smoothie like I had on Saturday – I keep thinking about how good that one was. The Vega powder didn’t make it taste weird or anything. Maybe just a bit chalky, but I like that, so it wasn’t a big deal. We’ll see how long it holds me over! I wanted to have a piece of toast too, but I told myself I should drink the smoothie first and go back for toast if I was still hungry, and this guy filled me up pretty well.
Kelsey and I have a picnic planned for after class! We’re going to shower first though 🙂
The Novice Berker says
Mm! I adore smoothie breakfasts too, but they definitely don’t keep me full for long, so I typically supplement them with toast & nut butter or something.
They used to make me really chilly too, until I stopped adding ice to them. I’ve found that I like it that way a lot better, because when the ice melts, it tends to water my smoothie down! Sans ice, no dilution and no chills! 🙂
Melissa says
I’ve tried a few different kinds of protein powders but I think they always taste funny. I just don’t like them. I’d rather get my protein from food sources!!
Yoga and a picinic sound like lots of fun!!
Victoria says
Smoothies are my go to breakfast. I agree with the novice berker — I don’t add ice to mine. Enjoy your class and picnic!
Joanie @ The Bright Side says
What a cute tablecloth! Good luck in the yoga session. I’ve never tried oats in a smoothie before, I think I’ll try that today.
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
I have a Vega product at home to try too! Thanks for the review. Shake mix looks good!
Enjoy yoga! Sweating is amazing!
Have fun at your picnic is as well!
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
I tried oats in a smoothie for the first time the other day, and it was fantastic!!!
brandi says
have fun at yoga!
I love and hate smoothies for the same reason 🙂 I hate that they make me so cold!
Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food) says
I love smoothies! Never tried oats in them, though!
meg says
I have wanted to try the vega products! Have a good class.
Red Head, Yellow Dog says
enjoy yoga! I’m trying a new class tonight and can’t wait!
I’ve never tried oats in my smoothie..I may just have to!
Katie says
I’m a long time reader and have always had a question about your and matt’s lifestyle. What do you do in terms of health insurance? If you don’t have employer provided, it is so expensive. Just wondering.
SarahP says
What kind of oats do you use in your smoothies? I’ve thought about throwing some steel-cut oats into my smoothies, but I’m always afraid I’m going to ruin the smoothie.
megan says
i had a smoothie this morning too! But i only ate it an hour ago, and i’m already hungry – that’s the worst thing about smoothies. Thankfully I was prepared and brought some granola to work to fill me up 🙂
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
Enjoy class! Can’t wait to hear about it.
I typically have just some AB stuffed medjool dates before a morning yoga practice. I used to think I couldn’t make it through without having a huge breakfast before but I like my belly to be empty for yoga. Something light and small always does the trick!
Hope the smoothie worked wonders for you!
weight and meditate says
I love oats in smoothies too, I think that’s on my lunch agenda for today! I hope class warms you up.
Shannon (The Daily Balance) says
I LOVE oats in smoothies 😉 Jambe Juice has a great one 😉
Nicole says
Have fun at class and your picnic!
Angie says
Can’t wait to hear about class. I’m going to have to check to see if we have a local studio that offers hot yoga- I am intrigued!
Christina says
ooh I love picnics. Have fun!!
Kudret says
It seems like everyone’s having a smoothie this morning. I started off my day with a Green smoothie that consisted of all natural chocolate protein powder, spinach, banana and milk. YUM!! and went down easy too. It’s smoothie-sipping wednesday around the blogosphere, I guess!
Sharon says
Have a great time!!!
Moran (The Running Addict) says
Oh sounds like a fun yoga session!
Lydia says
I like your tablecloth. Where did you get it?
Graze With Me says
Smoothies make me incredibly cold too, that one sounds really good. Have fun at yoga!

I just caught up on your stuff, and you totally need to be on OPRAH! Yes!!! Do you want me to call O for you? hehe
Have a super day and yay for yoga, girl!! XOXO
Megan (The Runner's Kitchen) says
Hooray for hot yoga and smoothies! I whipped up a green monster after yoga class last week and it was so refreshing. I usually drink smoothies post-exercise, otherwise I’m shivering and need to pile on the blankets 🙂
Allison K says
I had a smoothie this morning too! although I don’t like protein powders at all, although yours looks like it’s a bit better then some out there!
Anne says
Vega is really not your typical protein powder, and the smoothie infusion is not even a protein powder, it’s more of a mix of dried whole foods, packed for convenience, and ready to mix into a smootie.
Glad you liked it! It’s also really good if you add acai to it along with the banana.
Mel says
I have the same feeling about smoothies too! I love them but they just don’t keep me full!
Bobbi says
Kath where did you get that table cloth I LOVE IT?!!
Lauren says
i’m impressed that it was so good! It kind of looks chocolate in the picture, but i’m guessing based on the ingredients that it’s berry flavored. I’ll have to remember to try oats in my next smoothie. thanks for the idea!
Oh She Glows says
Ive always wondered about those smoothies. It will be interesting to see how long they hold you over!
Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
Well how do you like that – I had an oatmeal smoothie for breakfast today too! LOVE the oat addition!!
Katharina says
Hmm.. how long before the yoga class do you eat? I know that they recommend to eat 2-3 hours prior to the class because it can inhibit digestion.
Stacy says
Thanks for your reviews! I got a whole list of new stuff I need to find and try now! 🙂
Michelle Hisae says
Tofu-oat smoothie? Yum – new one for me to try! Enjoy your yoyoyoga!
Kailey (SnackFace) says
Vega sounds like the super protein powder and so much more! I always see their ads in VegNews and have been so curious about their products! Lovely to see you enjoyed it. Have fun at yoga!
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
I can’t wait to see what y’all pack for your picnic. Don’t forget the silverware!
Leah @ Simply Fabulous Now says
I absolutely LOVE oats in smoothies!
The only thing you needed in that smoothie was spinach to make it GREEN! 🙂
FitFoodie says
Smoothie looks delish 🙂 Can’t wait to hear about the picnic!
alwaysroom4dessert says
Brendan Brazier, the founder of Vega came to my nutrition school and gave us a talk, he was great and gave us a ton of free samples including that smoothie infusion, I will have to try throwing some oats into it!
Marissa says
Hope you have fun at yoga!

All your foods always looks very delicious. Oats and tofu in a smoothie is combination that doesn’t sound too appealing to me, but I might have to try this out myself.
Help Meghan Run says
Similar to what someone else said, I never put ice in my smoothies. 🙂 But I have never tried oats! I sure will, though.
Heather says
Have a great time at Yoga One! I wish I had a studio like that near me. Can’t wait to hear about the picnic!
I agree that smoothies don’t tend to hold me over as long as a solid meal. However, they’re great for a quick meal, especially in the summer! Oats are AWESOME in smoothies. I also LOVE almond butter. I still have to try tofu in mine, but I’m definitely going to soon!
jen says
I knew you’d love hot yoga…welcome to the “addicted” club!!!!
Can’t get enough of the super sweaty yoga practice!!
Michelle says
smoothies make my tummy super cold too!!! That’s why oats are my default, especially if its cold or rainy outside! Like today. 🙁
Kath says
Re. Smoothie Ice
I used to be against it because I thought it was watery, but I read somewhere that it thickens smoothies and now I started adding a handful and like it! I don’t think it melts much, but I don’t use a ton of ice either.
Katie ,
We buy our own health insurance through a NC company. It’s really not that expensive at all considering how important health ins. is – about $120 per person per month. We have a pretty high deductible for accidents and hospitalizations, but hopefully those won’t ever happen. It protects us if they do though.
SarahP ,
I use good ole rolled oats.
Lydia + Bobbi ,
Thanks! It’s from my grandmother, so it could be 100 years old – I have no idea!
polly ,
Yes, please give her a buzz for me!
Katharina
I finished my smoothie at 8 and class was at 9:30. I usually need an hour to digest for most things, but more like 2-3 hours for running. it also depends on what I have.
Foodie (Fab and Delicious Food),
Oh cool!! Thanks for the link!
