How keen is your sense of smell?
One thing I LOVE about morning runs is passing by a person on their way to work giving off the lovely scents of a clean shower, a spritz of perfume or a splash of aftershave. Nothin’ like a clean-smelling human!
Other smells I noticed on my run today:
Sizzling bacon
Laundry detergent x3
Marijuana (not kidding!)
Sulfury eggs
Honeysuckle
Smelly trash cans x10!
Back at home, I dove into a bowlful of berries!!
Plain yogurt topped with chia seeds, banana, rasp + blue berries and big clusters of raw Tropical granola coming to an OpenSky email near you this week! It’s like granola meets Larabar – very delicious.
Yesterday’s coffee!! I totally need to make more big pots at once and save them for iced coffee.
Headed to work!
Monica says
Haha, I only thought it was in Santa Monica/Venice, California that a run is always accompanied by the smell of marijuana. The sad thing is that I have grown use to that pungent smell when out on my run or bike ride.
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
I noticed that too everytime I bike around Venice. Marijuana + ocean smell is very noticeable.
Stephanie C says
I moved from the westside to Silver Lake and it’s hard to tell the difference between the weed and the skunks 😉
Sarah says
I love smelling food when I run, especially when I get out in the evening and I smell everyone grilling dinner 🙂 For some reason though, whenever I smell freshly laid beauty bark it makes me want to vomit. Is that just me?
Lisa Fine says
What an interesting assortment of smells to run past! I think some of them would make me a bit queasy. 🙁
I think I have a pretty good sense of smell, and taste. The last baby shower I went to we played the game when you have to guess the flavors of baby foods…and I won by getting most of them right.
Baking 'n' Books says
The granola looks perfect.
Cute emoticons for the scents.
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
ohhh I have a love-hate relationship with yummy food smells while I’m running! Love them generally but it makes my mouth water when I’m running which isn’t helpful! 😛
Hope you have a wonderful day! 🙂
Ashley O. @ The Vegetable Life says
I love walking and running outdoors and smelling summer and cookouts a night! In the morning I love the smell of morning dew (is that wierd that mornings have such a distinctive smell to me?!)
and your berries look so colorful today…. delicious!
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
Haha! Someone is going to have an unproductive day-smoking pot in the AM.
Cait's Plate says
Haha – I’ve definitely had the Marijuana smell before when running past certain houses. I also love running past coffee shops and smelling the muffins and coffee. It’s all the more motivation to finish and eat breakfast!
I just got a super similar soup bowl to yours and I LOVE it!
Sarah says
marijuana? Seriously? Grosss. Would not want to smell that on a morning run.. or any run.. or any time for that matter.
I would however love to smell bacon and laundry detergent 🙂 Good morning!
Amy says
I ran through what must have been an entire neighborhood cooking bacon for breakfast one Saturday morning. Bacon is my favorite food, but smelling it in the middle of a long run? Not my favorite. I wanted to puke!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I smell pot when I’m running through the park in the morning at times… it befuddles me that people are getting high before I’m fully awake. Guess that’s why they call it “wake and bake.” LOL!
Colleen (What's Baking in the Barbershop) says
Love that pretty linen under your breakfast this morning! Oh, and this morning I made your “strawberry cheesecake” dough boy smoothie from yesterday – loved it! Thanks 🙂
Margo @ peanut butter trees says
I love smelling all sorts of scents on runs too! I think my favorite is getting whiffs of lilacs during springtime runs. All the smells make you feel so alive!
Katie @ cooklaughmove says
I regularly smell pot when I’m running too. At the start of a run bacon smells good, but towards the end it makes me gag!!
I just told my husband last night I should be an undercover cop/informant disguised as a runner. I see/smell/hear a lot of stuff out running!!!
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Love the little emoticons!
For scents…as I mentioned yesterday, there are definite smells going on around the Downtown Mall on Sunday mornings! And STALE BEER smell on the Corner! Ugh!!
Jennifer says
I cracked up when I got to marijuana on your list. Wasn’t expecting that. (haha)
Kelsey says
I love the smell of laundry! Definitely beats those trash cans on garbage day :/.
Khushboo says
All your breakfasts recently are making me ‘berry’ jealous! I can’t wait till Strawbs are back in season!
skinnyrunner says
wow that is a crazy assortment of smells. what if you combined them to make a cologne of soapy weed bacon?
Marissa says
Hah, I’m the same way, too; there’s no better smell in the world than my grandpa after he’s taken a shower and put on a little of his aftershave. I don’t say that too him, though; he’d think I was crazy. I remember their old house in Michigan (where they lived for 50+ years) smelled like that aftershave. I loved it. 🙂
Yucky garbage cans are gross. I hated to pass them on runs, because I would always have to hold my breath!
Sarah says
I saw you in an Opensky ad on my myfitnesspal page today- made me smile!
WIERDGREENMAN says
I love clean-smelling people too! I don’t like too much perfume on someone, though, because it gets cloying.
Faith @ lovelyascharged says
I usually say that I have a broken nose in the sense that I can’t smell things unless they’re practically right under my nose!
Aine @ Something to Chew Over says
I smelt marijuana in the park today!
I could totally go for some granola right now
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I have an uncanny ability to smell marijuana anywhere! I can’t stand the smell of it, it literally makes me gag and I swear I can smell it from miles away. I think when I say something people think I was some kind of pot head in a previous life (not true), b/c usually they don’t smell anything. So now I just keep my mouth shut 🙂
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I miss the smells of a morning run. Can’t wait till I can run again 🙂
Have a great day!
Hillary says
I have a VERY keen sense of smell, which is unfortunate when my eighth grade students come in from recess on a hot, humid day. Sweaty adolescents smell RIPE!
hippierunner says
I have an amazing sense of smell, I can smell things from sooo far away. This kinda sucks though because some smells make me sick- like meat, tobacco smoke. yuck! But it is nice to run when everyone’s doing laundry on Sundays!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Ewww marajuana in the morning!? I have a pretty keen smell for that (and I have no idea why – it’s totally random) and am totally disgusted by it. Hopefully there are lots of fresh laundry detergent and honeysuckle people around today!
Karen says
I can vouch for your keen sense of smell, Kath…your description of those Method Dryer sheets as marshmellow-y was spot-on! (I love them!)
In the warmer weather especially, I’m very sensitive to someone wearing heavy perfume…freshly scrubbed is much nicer. The smell of marijuana = unpleasant.
KathEats says
Looooove those! Have you put them inside your pillowcase yet!? You get whiffs all night!
Karen says
I sure did! And, b/c they are moist, you can actually use them to wipe down a surface, leaving behind a yummy scent…great recommendation!
Rebecca says
Interesting assortment of smells. I usually just sell farm-smells on my runs and diesel/gas of passing cars. That berry bowl looks amazing!
char @ char on a mission says
Gotta love smelling weed while you run…almost as bad as me walking by some guys yesterday morning smoking it before work….I started work at 5:30am. Tell me you need it that bad at that time in the morning. Apparently so!
Sara says
LOL! Your smell-tour of Cville sounds soooo much better than the smell-tour of Houston by bicycle. My husband and I always joke about the wonderful smells of Houston: the wastewater treatment plant, the sewer smells, the restaurant dumpsters… all bad in-and-of themselves, but let those smells fester in the humidity of Houston and you’ve got some real nose-hair burners. >.< Blech. 🙂
Ally at A Girl in her Kitchen says
I love that table cloth! So cute!!
Erin at Hungry Heart says
Ugh, I learned the hard way not to go for a run in my neighborhood on garbage day! But I looove running in the morning when lilacs are in bloom 🙂
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
HAHA I just LOL’d. I hate smelling weed on my runs, it puts everything off! Slash where did you find those adorable icons?!
KathEats says
Gmail!
Susan (Oliepants) says
When I walk around my neighborhood it’s always right after dinner. I can be for certain that I will always smell someone grilling. It’s the Texan thing to do. 🙂
Lindsey says
You know what is also tantalizing? Oogling blog photos of food when you are hungry! But what really got me was the coffee.
lynn @ the actor's diet says
i smelled a lot of pot when i was in san fran and in nyc. at least then it’s coming from buildings – when i’m in la i can smell it coming from cars – eeeeek!
E says
I love smelling the scent of someone who showered in Irish Spring or if I’m walking in the evening, a good wiff of someone cooking on a charcoal grill 🙂
Bringing Pretty Back says
Yesterday Iwas in my office and the window was open , it started to rain … and it was so amazing to smell… SUMMER.
my husband had a head injury three years ago – and TOTALLY lost his sense of small.
I can’t even imagine!
Great post~
have a PRETTY day!

Kristin @ eat healthy. be happy. live well. says
I love the smells on my runs too! Honeysuckle was VERY prevalent a few weeks ago and it was my favorite part of the run! Being way out in the country, there are so many flowers and wonderful smelling bushes that I constantly am smelling new things on my runs.
Morgan @ moments of mmm says
I tried the Strawberry Cheesecake Doughboy Smoothie this morning. It was delish! Thanks!
Mary Legare Whaley says
I always make huge pots of coffee in the summer (like 8 cups worth), and keep it in the fridge for iced coffee every morning. It lasts for about 3 days, and the flavor lasts. It’s SO good (and so easy!).
Nikita says
There is a house that I go by in the mornings that often smells like freshly baked tortillas. It reminds me of my grandmas house and makes me a little emotional, but I try to use it as fuel for my run!
Lee @ in the pink of condition says
I live in NYC, so my runs are typically in Central Park. Therefore, I always get the smelly trash can smells, but I also get horse poop smells too due to the horse and buggies that transport people in the park! Yucky.
Laura @ CookKnitRun says
I love the smell of fresh laundry as I run along! The gardenias in the spring and fall, and the jasmine in the summer!
Janelle says
Love the idea of making big pots of coffee and saving some for iced coffee the next day. I need to do that!
Laura @ Backstage Pass says
Love all of the different smells! Were the marijuana and the bacon smells coming from the same building? 🙂
I also have a very sensitive nose / heightened sense of smell and truly appreciate the scent of clean humans as well. It’s like they radiate all of those lovely soap / shampoo smells!
Andrea @ The Skinny Chronicles says
We’re having a bit of summer rain here today. I love the smell of fresh rain…one of my favorites.
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Smells always seem amplified in the summer for some reason– or maybe it’s just that we’re out in our neighborhood more. Even as a vegetarian, nothing smells better to me than bacon in the morning, haha.
Monika @ Powered by paprika says
Haha, love the smells you encounter on a run!
There’s a certain spot on my runs that I pass a smelly dumpster and have learned to hold my breath at a certain spot before and after to avoid it!
Emily says
I get so distracted by some smells on my runs…especially fried food! I don’t ever eat it but whenever I smell it I think of how intoxicating it is and how I can tell why people love it.
ilovefetacheese says
lol is the laundry emoticon supposed to be a hurricane? haha
KathEats says
Yeah!! Like a washing machine 🙂
Meg says
Mmmm sizzling bacon 😉 one of the best scents in the morning! 😀
Enjoy your day, Kath!!
Stephanie @ Fear Of Bananas says
I ran by a bakery this morning and the smell of hot sweet cinnamon was wafting toward me. I was all I could to not stop dead in my tracks and go get whatever that delicious smell was!
Lisa says
Frist off, I have to say I really enjoy reading your blog. It’s been really enjoyable seeing all the aventures you’ve been up to and the success and creativity flowing through your bakery!
I’ve recently tried two recipes/ideas I found on your site that have now become absolutely favorites of mine. Honey (in my case – agave nectar) and olive oil used as salad dressing: delish! And I recently had a tempeh and pumpkin butter sandwich and it was amazing. Will be going back to that one many times.
Thanks for all the great ideas and inspiration! 🙂
KathEats says
So glad!
kaila @ healthy helper! says
I love the smell of bacon outside when I’m running! Such a comfort!
Larabar meets granola…..give me summa that!!!!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I picked fresh blackberries this morning at 5AM and then immediately had them on my oats. Perfect start to the day. Berries must be the theme of the day!
Cat @Breakfast to Bed says
last night was a really unpleasant blend of garbage and garlic. blech.
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
My mom has a really keen sense of smell… she can point out any scent!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I love running past apartments where they’re doing laundry inside. Somehow the smells’ SO strong it wonders outside. It’s refreshing.
Hannah says
As an alternative to chilled day-old coffee, I HIGHLY recommend cold brewed coffee. I first saw it on smittenkitchen, but the recipe originated in the New York Times. I mix 2/3 C coarse ground coffee with 3 C cold water in my french press, then pop it in the refrigerator to cold brew overnight (or at least 12 hours). If you cold brew in a jar or other container (covered), strain twice through a regular coffee filter. When it’s ready, mix equal parts coffee concentrate and water, then add milk! Here’s another gem: http://www.theatlantic.com/life/archive/2011/06/iced-coffee-for-purists/240074/
Alex says
I do the same thing! It really tastes different than cooled down regular brewed coffee, much less bitter and more aroma.
KathEats says
If I still had a french press, I would totally do this. I need to buy another one but since we have our coffeemaker I don’t feel I need to have both
Hannah says
Definitely try it in a jar, strained through a coffee filter. The difference is amazing! PS, I no longer live in Charlottesville, but I’m definitely coming to get some bread next time I’m in town!
KathEats says
I didn’t think about a jar + filter! Great idea!
KathEats says
I didn’t think about a jar + filter! Great idea!
Sorry – should have read your comment more carefully!
Alex says
I have a major pet peeve with certain smells during running and the worst is the heavy odor of fried food when running past a fast food place or restaurant – yuck…
Sonia (the Mexigarian) says
the other day I was out for a run and I swear someone was cooking up an Italian feast. Garlic and spices for sauce I could smell. I tried to guess which house it was on my loops, which helped pass the time of the run.
Christine (The Raw Project) says
My sense of small can be too keen, I can pick up bad breath from across the room which can be a curse! Gorgeous bowl of berries, yum!
Kayla says
It was trash day here, too! On my 14.5 mile bike ride this morning the trash cans a long the street were so smelly, it was quite disgusting! One point in my ride it smelled like Arby’s curly fries, and there isn’t an Arby’s even close by! Haha!
Cait @ UrbanFencepost says
I can often smell chocolate from the Blommer Chocolate factory on my way into the office!
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Hahaha marijuana at that hour?! Crazy people…
I love it when I go on morning runs and smell breakfast wafting from houses. It always makes me excited to get home and make my own brekkie!
Kara says
I love passing by the laundromat near my house while doing errands because I LOVELOVElove the smell of dryer exhaust. It’s like the freshness of laundry detergent but with a warm musty smell mixed in. Is that weird?
Jennifer says
Do you ever cold brew coffee for iced coffee? Or room-temp brew I guess is more accurate. I’ve been working on drinking a 1/2 gallon for the past several days. I much prefer the taste of the cold brew than cold regular coffee. And no special equipment needed. I made mine in 2 mason jars.
Ali says
Kath! My friends and I are having a girls’ weekend in Charlottesville next weekend (July 8-10th). We will definitely be stopping by the bakery. Can’t wait 🙂
KathEats says
Awesome!! I’ll be here Friday after lunch and Saturday from about 10:30-3ish – then we’re going to a wedding!
erica says
omg. your post title made me get the friends smelly cat song stuck in my head!!!
Rachel says
I love all the smells you experience while running. I especially think the morning has a distinct smell on its own. I also love the smell of honeysuckle, and unfortunately have also experience the random whiff of marijuana while running (it was coming from a car as it drove by!). What I really hate is someone wearing strong perfume/cologne. It makes my nose itch!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
My sense of smell is very sharp! It bothers me sometimes, because there are things I’d rather NOT smell!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
hahahaha! You’re too funny. I love runs like that when you’re fully aware of your surroundings and are just soaking up the world around you.
Maria @ Beautiful Busy Bee says
Ewww sulfury eggs are nasty!!! And garbage cans!!! I dont really notice smells while I’m running cause I breathe through my mouth.
Angel7 says

I used to get so hungry when heading out for a run before dinner! I coudl smell the wonderful aromas of my neighbour’s dinners cooking on the stove!
Mary says
I ran a 5k race last week and ran past a house that smelled like marijuana too. Thought it was odd at the time but I see from your post apparently not uncommon!
Jackie @ That Deep Breath says
That would be torture to smell bacon while on a run! I think I would switch up my running plans and head towards the house with bacon!
Jil @ Big City, Lil' Kitchen says
Whenever I walk around my neighborhood, marijuana is a smell that I can almost guarantee. haha And I love the smell of laundry on walks or runs…such a clean smell.
