I used to be obsessed with showering. I don’t know if it was the fact that I have a super nose, or the fact that I used to leave my house more (
) or that my mom has a habit of showering before she goes to the gym. But unless I was about to do something REALLY dirty (like play in mud) or head straight to the gym, I always used to shower first thing in the morning (even before hiking or going out on the beach!)Clearly I have progressed
Today my day just kept going on and I didn’t want to shower because I had a late afternoon workout planned. And I strangely feel less dirty now than I used to.
[Although I will add that I rarely get dressed up without a shower. My general rule is I have to being going places where sweats are appropriate if I go without one]
Cue the afternoon bikeride music:
Matt and I went for an hour ride around town. We chose a route with lots of hills (oh who I am kidding – EVERY STREET here has a hill!) The hour went by so fast I couldn’t believe it!
I ate a date before I left. I wasn’t really hungry but felt I needed a bit of fuel since it had been 3 hours since lunch. Well just as we got out on our ride, hunger hit. The date was not enough and I didn’t have anything with me except water. I charged onward though, and soon enough we were at our final destination.
A free brown ale tasting with Faith + Tate!
I wasn’t planning on particpating (I’m trying to drink a leeeetle less alcohol these days!) but I was so hungry I had to get something in my stomach! Thankfully, beer makes an excellent snack!
Once home we quickly showered (!!) and prepared dinner at the same time. I was about to eat my arm off at this point.
On The Menu
Angel Hair with Roasted Zucchini, Eggplant + Herbed Tofu with Fire Roasted Tomatoes
[Yes, it was THAT zucchini!]
It tasted great because I was very hungry, but my stomach was not the happiest. Lesson learned. Feed it a snack!
Off to relax. Movie? Book? Blogs? The usual evening activities!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
My husband showers before EVERYTHING – he showers last thing at night and first thing when he wakes up – right before the gym! I don’t get it. I shower once a day, but not before I get all sweaty!
Lauren at KeepItSweet says
i am so the opposite – i actually dislike days where i have to shower twice lol
Sarah K. @ The Pajama Chef says
me too! i love being clean & all but i’d rather get my workout in early so i can only shower once unless i absolutely need it. 🙂
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
I usually shower once a day
But sometimes if I don`t do anything that really gets me gross or sweaty then I won`t shower at all.
Katie @ peacebeme says
This dish looks so good! I am obsessed with roasted eggplant: did you have any kind of sauce on it?
Kath says
Just garlic gold. Best sauce ever 🙂
stacey-healthylife says
Dinner looks awesome and I agree about the showering thing.
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I hate getting wet, so although I shower every day, I wait until I’m actually leaving my house. And I never shower pre-workout!!
Krystina says
That zucchini must have been enough to feed y’all for a week!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I’m a twice a day shower gal 🙂 Mainly cause I workout in the morning, and I always like to shower before bed 🙂
Heather says
I make fun of my sisters husband all the time for showering before we go out onto the beach. LOL!
Melissa says
Hi Kath,
I’ve been a faithful reader of your blog for a while, but this is my first time commenting. Your blog always seems to put a smile on my face. It makes me happy to see evidence of someone thoroughly loving life and living it to the fullest. Each time I read your blog, I feel as though I am going on an adventure, or almost living vicariously through you. Having been battling an eating disorder for much of my life, it is an inspiration to see that it is in fact possible for one to delight in life and truly enjoy themselves. Thank you for showing all of us readers out there how to be yourself, but more importantly, how to appreciate life.
<3 Melissa
Kath says
Thank you Melissa 🙂
Simply Life says
oh great dinner!
Mary (What's Cookin' with Mary) says
LOL Kath! You crack me up ;P I used to be way more obsessed with showering, although I have never showered before going to the beach, pool or gym. Now that I am home all the time, I only shower after I get sweaty… and if that’s not till 4pm, so be it. I actually got a reddish rash from (what the doctor said was) showering too much ?! Once in the morning… then after work (Starbucks coffee smells good, but not in my hair) and again after the gym in the evening after classes and a work out. Who knew you could get a rash from too much cleanliness?!
Namaste Gurl says
Yum, your dinner looks quite yummy if I do say so myself. You should def. post the recipe 🙂
I, too, love bike-riding however the opposite–as what happened for you–happens for me. If I’m hungry before I start exercising, it wares off due to the activity. I still eat breakfast, snack, dinner, etc., despite not being hungry. My bodys still hungry internally 🙂
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i shower at night b/c i can’t stand going to bed “dirty.” that’s how i was raised – my husband does it first thing (like you and most of america) and doesn’t get it.
modelbehavior says
I hate when I get so hungry that my stomach hurts ugh!
holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
There are too many days where I shower twice per day — once right away in the morning before work and then after my workout in the evening. On the weekends I put it off if I am working out later in the day. Jason showeres right away — even if we are going to the gym or going for a run.
I would have loved to see the zucchini being chopped up — did you have to use a chainsaw???
Kate says
so i’ve followed your blog for awhile and oddly enough, you just moved to my town. you would LOVE greenwoods general store. get on 64, get off the king family vineyard exit but turn left instead of right. you’ll see greenwoods – incredible sandwiches. all organic from local farms. my hubby and i love getting greenwoods sandwiches and eating them at the king family polo matches every sunday.

Cool! I’ll have to check it out sometime.
Kath says
Oh I think we passed that on the way to Blue Mountain Brewery!?
Kate says
oh also, trader joes in short pump just got cranberry pumpkin butter! and have you tried their sunflower seed butter?
Kath says
We already have two jars of it in the pantry!
melissa says
is there a recipe? amazing dish!
erica says
omg, my bf is a constantly takes showers! as soon as he wakes up…even if he’s going to the gym…before he goes anywhere…if our water bill wasn’t included in our building maintenance fees i think i’d have to put my foot down! haha
your pasta looks delicious!
Kate says
last post – you need to eat at continental divide. only locals know about it- there isn’t even a sign. awesome food – try the tuna. it’s right down from l’etoile on the bridge across from wild wings. go early – it gets crowded! a well known charlottesville favorite. blue ridge brewing company has some good beers. and try to get to the starr hill brewery.
Kath says
OH, we HAVE! It was great 🙂
Jamie @ Food in Real Life says
This looks awesome! I have a block of tofu in the fridge and I might need to make this!

I have to comment because I know there are blog lurkers out there like me who do NOT shower every day!! If I don’t work out I may not shower… there, I admitted it! My husband makes fun of me but I just tell him I’m secretly European (hey, my ancestors are from Europe).
Marieke says
uhmm what does European have to do with not showering?? What a strange assumption. I’m Dutch and I shower everyday. It’s a bit yucky not to!
D says
ahahaha i hate that european assumption. americans say it all the time…and it’s not really true.
Ella says
When I lived in Italy the Italians DEFINITELY did not shower every day, nor does my close friend from England!
Marieke says
To be honest, I think it just depends on the person. I know American people who don’t shower everyday, and I know Europeans who don’t shower everyday. I just thought it was a strange connection to Europe.
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
The biking for transportation definitely changes the shower outlook for me, as does any activity that involves being outside in the heat. Showering first seems pretty ridiculous when I know I’ll be getting sweaty anyway. Plus, showering less helps conserve water and the energy to heat it 🙂
Errign says
I spy Smuttynose Brown Ale – New Hampshire represent! 🙂

Mm that pasta looks so good!

Wow, your dinner looks awesome! Definitely a dish I’ll have to try!

I find that if my body gets used to showering every other day, or only washing my hair a few times a week, I get used to it. It amazes me sometimes how our society overshowers.
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I used to absolutely hate showering when I was younger..I know, gross. And then I got into showering every single day no matter what. Usually it’s after tha gym so it’s needed anyway 😛
My brother’s like your mom, he showers before going to the gym. It doesnt make sense to me..but whatever 🙂
Cara Craves... says
I often dread the process of showering…
I love a good shower, but I hate how it also has to include styling my hair, doing my make-up etc.
I wish I could just roll out of bed and be perfectly clean and pretty 🙂
I’m dreaming!
Hope says
Mmmm dinner looks so good! Yum!
I love showers! Before we bought our house, whenever we moved from one rental place to another, I would always check the shower (size, water pressure etc) before anything else!
Tiny living room? Who cares, the shower rocked!!
Mads says
My showering is exactly the same. I really don’t understand how people can put on a clean skirt and top and go out for the night without a good scrub-down!
Insanity. Pure insanity.
Heather says
I used to be the same way about taking a shower – now on days that I don’t even go anywhere, I oftentimes don’t even take one. Vacation for my skin!
I love a good pasta dish every once in a while – that looks great!
Camille says
I’m not a big pasta fan, but your dinner looks good!
Jazz says
I only shower every other day (after I run).. no shame.. saving water and it’s better for the hair! I’ve also converted my hubby who used to shower at least once a day!
Marge says
Wait a second–aren’t you going to say which of the brown ales you liked? As a brown ale lover, I am curious. I know I like Smuttynose and I think Dogfish Head beers are generally amazing.
Kath says
I liked the Smuttynose and Dogfish the best! Surprise surprise!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
If I worked from home, I would never shower. Honestly, when I have kids and stay at home, the stench might be coming from me, not their diapers.
I hate when I don’t eat snacks. I get all kinds of gassy and my stomach hurts after I eeat!
Hannah says
Was that twin oaks tofu? Gosh I miss that stuff! Love seeing it used and enjoyed by someone else though 🙂
Laura Ann says
OMG, that tofu looks insane! did it come like that or did you do that? wow.
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Food always tastes so amazing when you’re that hungry but I hate that I-wanna-eat-my-arm feeling!
Jean@RoastedRootsandPumpkinSpice says
You are probably totally grossed out to find out that I shower every other day. 😀 Your dinner looks wonderfully comforting.
Kasey says
That pasta looks delish!
Molly @ the F-spot says
Ha! I am writing this after two workouts today and I STILL haven’t showered! I kind of embrace the unshowered life for a good 24-36 hours (though I embrace baby wipes, deodorant, and mid-day face washes). Also, I can attest that beer is an excellent supplement and better than GU by my estimations because it’s easier on my stomach.
Cheers for “real food!”
amy says
i think the reason i dislike showering is because i HATE drying and styling my hair!
that pasta looks awesome!
Kath says
Ditto. If my hair would dry spontaneously, I wouldn’t mind it at all.
Diana @ frontyardfoodie says
I totally used to be a shower freak too. I would shower every morning no matter what. Later in life I Realized that was silly and showered more appropriately. Sometimes I shower two days in a row and sometimes I wait a few days.
I have a new philosophy on shampooing……..I just don’t do it.
Sharelle says
hey kath! im new to the healthy living blog world [kinda] & i love yours. just wanted to drop in and say hey!
i used to be obsessed with showering too! now i almost dread it. haha. sometimes ill go a whole day without one. [not if i work out though].
anyway, that dinner looks delish. 🙂

Kath says
It was my fav! Love their beers

I’ve become addicted to showering these days. Not so great with the drought & all! I try to be super quick though.
I really want your dinner, Kath! Angel hair is the best.

pasta looks yum
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
I know that “wish I had a snack” feeling. Not fun!!
But your meal looks fabulous. Look at all that fresh zucchini! 😀
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
The dinner looks amazing! On the subject of showering, I have just gotten to that point too where I don’t have to be showered to go everywhere. Sometimes it is a waste of time and water. I like to think I am finding my inner hippie!
Kate says
last comment – i put pumpkin cream cheese in my oatmeal this morning and it was delicious!
Kath says
RECIPE:
-Whole wheat angel hair, cooked accordingly
-Roasted eggplant (1), zucchini (1 GIANT!) rubbed in Garlic Gold and cooked at 400* for about 30 minutes
-Herbed tofu seared in a pan until golden brown
-1 small can of fire-roasted tomatoes, heated in a pan with a dash of sherry and some dried oregano
-Garlic Gold drizzled on top of noodles
-Parmesan to garnish
Jessica says
I don’t know if he still works at Market St., but my former chemistry lab teacher, Tom Walters, gives excellent wine recommendations. Um, and discounts.
Kath says
What does he look like?!
Jessica says
I suppose I don’t really need to shower in the mornings before work, since I only do so to wash my hair (it’s short and looks like I got electrocuted when I wake up). Hair-washing in the sink would do it too, I suppose.
I usually plan my weekends out so that I don’t shower until after I’ve done whatever exercise is planned. Why shower when you are just going to get smelly and have to shower again?
AND that dinner looks awesome. If only my husband at zucchini without complaining.
Amber K says
I only shower after work outs! Thankfully I work out at least once a day, even if it isn’t much.
Healthy food says
Hey!
Great blog and great recipe !
As for the showering..in the morning and before bed 🙂
Meri says
Ah, I love days that reading a blog makes me feel normal. I’m sort of a shower freak- I always shower before dressing up and I usually have to shower before bed (or be pretty clean) or I dont like to put on PJs or be in my bed.
silly sensory needs 🙂
I love your blog Kath! I read it all the time and just started my own a few weeks ago too!
Lisa says
When I was running I had to shower twice. It annoyed me too. But that’s because I have really thick, curly hair that takes FOREVER to dry. So by the time my lunch break run was there, my finally dried hair was wet again.
Cheryl says
I can’t help but think of showering in terms of environmental impact because I live in a drought-prone area. All the water, energy to heat the water, and chemicals washed into the waste water is something to consider.
I started sink-showering (I don’t know another word for it) between showers and feel clean enough!
Nelle @ Living Cliche says
I need to break my addiction to showering. How did you do it? I LOVE taking super hot, super long showers. I know it dries out my already dry skin, but I can’t help it. Even if I oversleep for work or have ZERO time, I still hop in for a minute to rinse off. I can’t seem to wake up without one. If I have to skip a shower, I feel awful for the rest of the day.
Maybe if I had long hair that could be pulled back in a ponytail, I could skip a morning shower… but I have really short hair that at least needs to be wet down or I have craaaaazy bed head. C’est la vie.
Kath says
Nelle,
I wouldn’t go to work without a shower either. I’m speaking mostly of around-the-house stuff!
