Some of us share blood
Others share a home
Some share a name
But tonight, we all shared everything!
We decided to bar hop rather than put all of our eggs in one basket so we could try as many restaurants as possible. And then within each location, we couldn’t decide on a dish to call our own – so we just shared everything. It worked brilliantly.
We met KERF reader Natalia for a drink at The Moorings, which lured us to its bar with the promise of a bag of seafood donuts!
Natalia goes to school here in Newport – it is always fun to meet new friends!
The boys got beers, the girls got waters
And the bag of seafood donuts – little pillows of sweet dough with embedded flecks of scallop, lobster and shrimp – were better than they sounded
After some conversation and slurping down the last of course I, we headed to Diego’s, modern Mexican cuisine.
The restaurant was super small and cozy and we had impeccable service! Very attentive onion-awareness staff ; )
Matt A. spotted something for me when he glanced at the menu this afternoon:
The Three B’s Manhattan
Bourbon, Butter and Bacon make this Manhattan a cocktail, meal, dessert or all three? Jim Beam Bourbon is infused with butter and shaken with pechaud Bitters, sweet vermouth and a dash of maple syrup. Served chilled and straight up with a chocolate covered bacon garnish
Will any drink EVER live up to this one again!!? That chocolate bacon strip was the best thing I ate all weekend.
Larbs + Matt oogling over it!
We were so enamored by the menu, we decided to share 3 entrees that were at the top of each of our lists:
Hermosa Pizza
Made with shredded pork, pineapple salsa, black beans, red pepper & spicy Baja aioli.
WOW. Was this ever incredible!! Two slices for each.
Next up we shared the Catch Of The Day Salad with peppers, jicama and a blackened fish. The fish was a little rare for my liking, but I loved the greens. Obviously!
Lastly, we shared the fish tacos – loaded- 3 ways. That means two tacos, split. Worked perfectly! These were great as well.
Our first two courses were amazing, but of course we didn’t want the night to end. I was happy with my bacon chocolate for dessert, but Larbs was itching for something more, so we ended the night at Fluke Wine Bar.
The four of us shared sips from this Tawny Port (just one sip will do!)
It took us FOREVER to decide on a dessert, but we finally settled on…
S’Mores for Matt A. and me
And Sweet Potato Pie with a whipped cream log for Larbs and my Matt
But of course, we all shared!
And now we’re all sharing a hotel room!

Kath, I’ve been reading your blog for about a year and wanted to let you know how inspiring it is to me. I tell all my girlfriends (as you know most women have issues with food and weight) to check out your site for recipes, ideas, but most of all for sound advice and a voice that rings so true as to what healthy living is all about. I loved your post of the Tofu Tour. I live on the West Coast but am now inspired to start looking for a better tofu as the one I currently use is just o.k. And if I’ve learned anything from your blog, it’s that we should never settle for just o.k. food.
Kath says
I’m so glad that’s my message!! 🙂
Tracy says
I’ve been following you for a bit now but I’m a comment virgin. I channeled some KERF tonight and bought my first few mis-matching bowls and plates. I love seeing your different styles of place settings and dinnerware….so much fun! I had gotten so bored looking in my cupboards and seeing all of my matchy-matchy stuff. I found some fun stuff at Pier 1 Imports and Cost Plus World Market. I look forward to picking up more and enjoying my eclectic new cupboard!
Thanks!
Tracy
Kath says
<3 Bowls!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
Sharing rocks! It’s like getting to order 4 things on a menu. Photog question (for learning’s sake): Did you use flash for some of your photos i.e. the pizza and salad? Just wondering. I think it looks pretty good.
Kath says
Yup! I’m finding that when it’s SO dark that the photo would be a lost cause, a flash plus “warmer” on the editing looks OK
Katie says
You went to Fluke! I’ve been dying to try this place – thanks for the preview of the smores dessert!
Natalia - a side of simple says
Yay! I’m so glad Diego’s was a hit! I loved the food when I went there. Bacon/Chocolate/Alcohol sounds like a wonderful combination, not going to lie.
I can’t even tell you how great it was meeting you, Matt, your sister, and Matt. I loved talking with you and each of them. Thank you! Enjoy your sleepover and I look forward to reading more of your Newport adventures 🙂
Kath says

That sounds like such a fun night!! I wish my sister and i both had bfs/husbands to go travel around with! On a completely unrelated note…I ran the thunder road half marathon yesterday in Charlotte and was finally able to try some Great Harvest. OMG Dakota bread might be one of the most delicious things I have ever tasted! Now I totally understand why you love it so much!
Faith @ lovelyascharged says
I love family style dining, although I always assume whoever I’m eating with is okay with sharing. I think that kind of came about in college – our big group of friends always had dinner together and we were so casual that we had a “just because it’s on your plate doesn’t make it yours” mentality 😉 I remember the first time I went to dinner with one of my (now very close) friends, he offered to make my ice cream half calorie; never having heard the joke before I handed it over to him and he proceeded to take a huge chomp out of it! Ha.
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
I have yet to try chocolate bacon but dang it looks delicious. Fun night! I love wine bars, so much. They have the most unique foods and lots of good beer in addition to wine. Love them!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
this sounds like a seriously amazing progressive dinner! we’ve tried to do that so many times but it always fails when we find a place with great food and atmosphere…we just end up hanging out the whole time!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
