Raise your hand if you have listened to Serial!!
{Those of you who have can skip this next paragraph. Discussion spoilers at the very end of this post!}
If you aren’t familiar with Serial …or maybe you have heard it mentioned 10 times but have yet to listen, it’s a podcast put on by This American Life that tells a nonfiction story week by week. This very first season was about the murder of a teenage girl in Baltimore fifteen years ago. During the podcast, the host, Sarah Koenig, interviewed Adnan, who was charged with the teen’s murder and has been in prison for almost half of his life. Koenig also interviewed his friends and family, his classmates and experts who weigh in about the case and trial. It’s all soooooo interesting. The final episode aired last Thursday, so you can listen to all 12 in a row – interruption free.
Serial had me going on long walks during Thanksgiving when my parents were here to babysit and finding reasons to listen in the shower or while folding laundry. There is even a podcast about the podcast when you are hungry for more discussion. I promise at the very least Serial will make you think.
Somewhere in the middle of an episode, Adnan mentions that he is a cook at the prison and has a breakfast club where he makes delicious apple + cheddar omelets. And thus, swirl of a craving began. Here’s my take on apple + cheddar omelets. Mine turned out great, but something tells me that Adnan’s are even better
Start with one chopped apple – skin and all. I never peel anything!
Cube up about half a cup of sharp cheddar cheese. You could also use grated cheese too. I love the tangy bite of sharp white cheddar.
Add your apples to a skillet set to medium heat along with a few tablespoons of water to help them steam.
After about 8 minutes, remove the apples from the pan. They should be tender throughout.
Beat 4 eggs in a jar and add 2 pinches of salt and a tablespoon of water. (FYI this recipe serves 2!)
Melt butter in your pan – don’t skimp! I have horrible luck cooking eggs in stainless steel pans, so if you only have one of those, use a TON of butter!
Pour in half of your eggs (saving the other half for omelet #2)
Scrape around the edges with a spatula and lightly scramble in the middle
Once the omelet is set – about 2-3 minutes later, add half of the cooked apple and cheddar
Get ready to fold over one side..
Then slide omelet to the side of the skillet and onto your plate, folding over the second side in the process.
Enjoy the sweet savory combo!
Apple Cheddar Omelets
Ingredients
- 1 chopped apple
- 4 eggs beat
- 1/2 cup cheddar cheese cubed
- 2 pinches salt
- 2 tbsp butter
- Water
Instructions

- Add apple along with a few tablespoons of water and cook for 5-8 minutes, until apple is tender.
- Add salt to eggs along with a tablespoon of water. Stir.
- Add enough butter to coat the bottom of your pan (even if it's nonstick!) and pour half of eggs in.
- Pull edges of eggs toward the center for form a rim and allow to set for about 2-3 minutes.
- When eggs are close to setting, add half of apples and cheese.
- Fold over one third of omelet and then slide onto plate, folding other other side with the edge of the skillet.
- Repeat for omelet #2.

Soooo….those of you who have listened to Serial. Let’s discuss!!
I think Adnan is innocent in about 80% of my brain, but most importantly I think there is reasonable doubt that he didn’t do it, so I think he is wrongly in jail. I do think there is a chance that Adnan killed Hae out of passion, but I think it’s unlikely based on the friend who said she spoke to Hae after school at the gym…and because of Asia’s alibi letter. And WHY didn’t they interview the entire track team to figure out if he was at practice that day!? Maybe because he/they knew he wasn’t and it wouldn’t help the case?
What IS the deal with Jay!? I think he is definitely hiding something, and it wouldn’t surprise me if he covered for an accomplice by framing Adnan. His story is just so fishy.
I thought the ending was as satisfying as it could be, and I’m eager to follow the story as it continues to be in the news in real time. I saw that Rabia has a blog and will be posting anything new, so that’s one to follow for the latest updates. And THIS timeline – while really long – is really a game changer for me. Why didn’t Serial go into this kind of detail?!
I am super curious to know what comes out of the UVA professor’s research…
What did you think!?
Kaila @healthyhelperblog! says
I am SERIAL obsessed! I can’t wait for next season….and to see if anything happens with Adnan’s case! This omelette looks great. I love apples and cheese together for a sweet a salty flavor explosion.
Linda @ TheFitty says
Apple with cheese and eggs? Wait, what? I have never, ever, ever heard of that combo before. Dare I try it? well, if it’s coming from you, I trust it 🙂
Shel@PeachyPalate says
Butter and eggs…it’s just a must! I can’t tolerate the milk solids so I make my own clarified butter…love it!
Rachel says
Great idea for a post! I love Serial and am missing it already. This omelet looks delicious!

Listening to it, I felt like Adnan was innocent, but like they say in the last episode, that’s just a lot of crappy luck on his behalf if he was. I do think that there was lot more drug stuff going on than they are letting on and that’s a big reason both Jay and Adnan are sketchy about their whereabouts that day. I do not think it was a serial killer because how would Jay know where her car was?
Dawn Thomas says
Hey Kath… once the post gets to the ingredients section, it is wrong. The ingredients in the post above are for a Brussels side dish but you made an omelet.
Wishing your family a Merry Christmas!
Dawn Thomas says
Looks like it is fixed now… sorry to bother.
KathEats says
Oh good…I bet it was a refresh issue
Winding Spiral Case says
Serial sounds fascinating! I need to start listening to more (…or any) podcasts. This recipe will be the solution the next time I can’t decide between a sweet or savoury breakfast (first world problem, I know). I’d be curious to hear more of Adam’s recipes!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
I definitely kept up with Serial, it was really fun to listen to! Although the end was exactly what I expected!
Andrea says
Obsessed with serial. I can’t get enough! I’m so sad it’s over…now I’m listening to the podcast about the podcast just to get my fix!
Kerry says
I loved Serial too! I agree there is reasonable doubt. But there is definitely some fishy stuff with some their stories. We will probably never know (which is not as satisfying as an episode of Law & Order but more realistic 😉 ) I hope the story they do next season is as good.
Liz @ I Heart Vegetables says
Definitely obsessed with Serial! I can’t wait for the next season, although I’m sure it’ll be tough to live up to that last one!
Allison says
If you try to read the post in bloglovin you get the Brussels sprouts recipe and no serial talk at the end. Once I started listening, I couldn’t stop. I think he probably did it, maybe. There is certainly lots of reasonable doubt. How did Jay know where the car was??
courtney says
If you add a bit of milk, your omelette will come out a lot more fluffy! Yours almost look like crepes..maybe that was what you were going for?
Jane says
I was so addicted to Serial and am still eager for updates. I actually just started listening to the podcast from the beginning for a second time and it has changed my mind about things yet again! I think it’s worth a second listen because it reminds you of small details that you may have forgotten over the course of the entire season.
KathEats says
Really?! Maybe I will!
clare @ fitting it all in says
I’m with you on Serial!! I just think the deal with Jay is SO fishy, and regardless of whether or not he’s guilty, Adnan should not be in jail. I hope his story continues even without the podcast!!
Anne Weber-Falk says
I listen to NPR almost exclusively but had never heard of Serial. My curiosity was peaked after seeing SNL’s parody. I have something new to hear now. Thanks. Oh, and that omlet looks good.
Alice says
Please tell me about that egg holder. It looks like glass. I hope it’s not part of your refrig. I’d like to get one. Thanks.
KathEats says
It’s plastic from amazon! Want a link?
Jessica says
Yes, I’d love a link Kath.
Serial obsessed too. I think Adan shouldn’t be in prison due to lack of evidence. I’d love to be able to completely feel he’s inoccent but like u can’t. I think Jay and Jenn have a lot to do with Her murder.
KathEats says
Here it is! I don’t use the lid.
Christine @ BookishlyB says
I agree- there’s something up with Jay. The fact that Adnan’s in jail scares me- I know they didn’t have the advancements that we have, but the conviction should have never happened.
I remember the breakfast club; my first thought? “I want to join!” My second thought? “Nevermind, it’s in a prison.”
Annie says
Adnan totally did it, and Jay helped! My two cents 🙂
Love the sound of this omelet, though! How funny … I also thought his prison breakfasts sounded pretty good. See, when you’re not in prison and have to go to work early, there’s less time for weekday cooking …
Dana says
Did you hear Jay is going to do ONE interview to (in his words) “out the reporter for who she really is”?? DYING!!!
KathEats says
What!? When and where?
Dana says
Not sure yet – he supposedly posted it on his FB this morning and then deleted… send me an email and I can add you to my fan group – one of the girls posts a screenshot 🙂
KathEats says
Hmmmm!
Jen_A says
Absolutely loved Serial. But I just…cannot make up my mind. I think EVERYBODY’S story is fishy. None of it makes sense, and I think there’s still a lot being hidden on all sides. That said, I completely agree that Adnan should not have been convicted based on the available evidence at the time. There was just nothing concrete – it was all one guy said this happened with little to no corroborating evidence. I’m hoping that the UVA law clinic makes some headway and we in Cville get to see some local news stories about it.
NK says
“Serial” frustrated me. At an absolutely exciting time in social justice, I feel that Sarah Koenig did not bring enough depth to the story. Race was only discussed for a mere 15 minutes on one episode. We are talking about Baltimore, Maryland. The detectives were white men. Most people involved in the crime were people of color. Why didn’t she look into the systemic issues that caused these policemen to be so careless with the investigation?
Julie says
What an amazing recipe! I love Serial and totally remember that he said that.
jen says
Obsessed. Got me through being sick! Pan-wise—have you used cast iron? Grab one at Target or World Market—-amazing and you will never use that awful non-stick chemical coated stuff again.
Sheilagh says
Loving the resurgence of radio. Serial has been getting me through the evening chores and has made the dreaded ones go so much quicker. Because I listen on my phone I can take it with me as I sweep, fold laundry etc. any suggestions for other great podcasts? Especially from Brit, Aussie, and kiwi readers?
Kelly says
After this post, I listened to Serial, and just finished. Adnand totally did it and Jay helped, as one of the blog readers posted above. 🙂
KathEats says
Haha. I am still not convinced!
