Hot oatmeal? Yes please!
This bowl felt like the fall it was so fluffy and comforting. We’re still blessed with mild temps and low humidity here, although I could use a bit more sunshine please. It’s crazy how you can just sense a lower temp and crave a hot breakfast without stepping outside.
I made some whipped banana oatmeal with cottage cheese, some crumbled Hungry Bar and sunflower butter in my Ramen bowl. Blackberries stirred in too!
Accompanied by a barrel full of iced coffee. 2/3 coffee concentrate and 1/3 water. I could definitely use it stronger, but this mix is working well for now and seems to be a great balance between strength and conservation. I’m also loving having the concentrate in the fridge in my french press so I only have to make it a few times a week! Pioneer Woman was on to something with her month supply in a beverage dispenser!
Have a happy hump day!
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
I was just thinking about fall this morning while coming across pumpkin recipes on Pinterest. It’s gonna be here before we know it!
KaraHadley says
Have you noticed if the concentrate is getting a funky flavor? It may just be my fridge, but I find that when I leave ice coffee for too long it gets stale and weird.
KathEats says
Tasted just the same on day 2
Lisa says
I noticed it too! I wondered about trying it with something other than tap next time.
Katie says
I’ve still been eating hot (or at least warm) oatmeal most of the summer. After I go outside for the day and the temps rise then it seems like all I want to eat is cold, refreshing foods. After 100+, 90 here in Nebraska is a relief, but it will be near 100 by next week again. I am looking forward to fall (cooler temps, school, football, volleyball, pumpkin, apples). Love your green dish, where is it from?
KathEats says
OpenSky – also you can buy it at Uncommon Goods
Katie says
Thanks Kath! I’ll off to check it out.
Katie says
I don’t know if I should love or hate you for sharing this site. What fun products, my daughter found lots of things she wants. I am definitely ordering something, now to decide. I guess I’ll say thanks again for sharing this site, LOL. Do you have other items from there?
Heather @ Fit Mama Real Food says
I just love that ramen bowl! Warm oats for me too this morning.
Amanda @flecksofgreen says
That is the cutest bowl/cup! Where did you get it?
KathEats says
OpenSky – also sold at Uncommon Goods

I love fall! I can’t wait for the days where I won’t be sweating the minute I walk outside 🙂
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
It’s web ridiculously hot here in Chicago and I’m still eating hot oats! I just love them and they seem more satisfying than a cold breakfast
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Happy Wednesday, Kath! 🙂 A bowl of hot oatmeal sounds delicious today!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Yum! I love that green bowl. Although I certainly don’t like thinking about fall yet, I do second Allie’s comment above about the pumpkin! I am still eating it even in the midst of summer!
Lindsey @ Pas de Deux says
I had hot oatmeal today too (with yogurt and berries stirred in)! Something about the gloominess screamed OATS, haha! That’s a fun green bowl!
Cathy says
My daughter and I are trying the iced coffee. We have decided it is too strong for us. 🙁
Andrea says
Yup, it was definately a hot oats morning 🙂 I had some with shredded zucchini stirred in… zucchini bread oatmeal! Have a wonderful day!
Lexi @ You, Me, & A World to See says
Mmm that sounds awesome! Gonna have to give that a try 🙂
stacey says
I was just thinking about adding shredded zucchini to oatmeal yesterday since I have a lot of home grown zucchini right now. Did you add anything else to them? I was thinking cinnamon and raisins with a little maple syrup and nut butter would be a very tasty combo!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I always prefer the straight concentrate too, so I started brewing it in a 1:3 ratio and at room temp, then pouring it over ice.
erika says
You have the cutest plates and silverware!! I need to get over my obsession to have things “match”. Life’s too short! :-p
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I finally bought cottage cheese to try in my overnight oats – I’m still a little weary, but I’m going to be brave and try it!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Looks like my breakfast this morning (with a slight twist) – oatmeal and iced coffee! 🙂
Megan @ Megan's Munchies says
Yum!! I need to start eating oatmeal again. I used to eat it all the time and then all of a sudden it didn’t sound good anymore. This post made me want to dive right back into oatmeal again. Happy Wednesday!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I went for the hot oats today too – something about a cloudy morning makes me crave them! Melted cherries on top of mine though.
A month supply of coffee sound like my dream world. 🙂
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I have definitely not given up my hot oats in the morning this summer…in fact I did another vanilla pumpkin oatmeal this morning. I think I’m channeling the cooler weather and my favorite season!
Rachel says
I have yet to try cottage cheese in my oats.. I usually put protein powder in lol
Emily @ www.main-eats.com says
Would LOVE to be sitting outside in the cool, beautiful weather! I tried to eat on my deck this morning and just about baked! I love making the coffee concentrate too-we use the Toddy and really love it. Kinda expensive, but definitely makes really smooth and delicious coffee. Love it strong!
Cait's Plate says
This weather has definitely got me in the fall spirit lately. It’s been rainy non-stop around here so I’ve been craving warm, comfort foods all week! 🙂
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
You just reminded me I need to look into stainless steel straws. 🙂
wesley @ the way home says
You have the most adorable bowls! Sometimes I wonder just how many you have. I’d love to see them all used at a dinner party, or better yet, an oatmeal party! Something to consider 😉
KathEats says
They have been before!
wesley @ the way home says
I bet it was adorable
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
I had hot oats this morning, too! I was going to have cereal but changed my mind at the last minute 😀
Theresa says
Why are you conserving the coffee? Health reasons or a special coffee you can replace? Just kind of curious……. Thanks again for a great, positive healthy based blog.
KathEats says
Because it’s expensive : )
Khushboo says
The gloomy rain here makes me crave fall foods!
Millie Snyder says
Another success with your oatmeal! It looks delicious!!
Sarah @ Fresh Living says
Your tablecloth is so cute! The breakfast looks amazing as well. Enjoy the weather…
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
great balance between strength and conservation = good to know it’s working for you.
My usual way to get lots of mileage out of cold coffee is to brew a ridiculously strong pot of espresso-coffee or a dark-roast and practically overflow my filter 🙂 Get it as strong as possible, let it cool, pour it into a container and chill it. Over the next day (or two or three) it gets even stronger in the fridge and that’s my ice coffee. I don’t add water, but between ice cubes and cream, it does dilute some. I need to compare it with your method!
Annette @FitnessPerks says
I love that cup/bowl! SO unique!
Emily Butler says
I’ve been still craving big hot bowls of oats even with this heat!
Kathy W. says
We were without power for 8 days(!), so I’m only now catching up w/blog reading. I just wanted to say that I’m so sorry about darling Lillian. But she was a lucky girl to have been adopted by your parents, who obviously adored her.
(shifting gears…I happened to see this post about making iced coffee in a french press like yours on a Cooks Illustrated site. Might be worth trying/comparing to PW!)

8 days – glad you’re back!
And thanks for the sweet words on Billis : )
Chelsea @ Chelsea's Lovelys says
That oatmeal creation looks wonderful! I love my oatmeal just a tad warm, especially since it’s not in the 90s anymore (at least where I’m at). I am looking forward to the more cool fall days. I don’t know if I will be able to give up iced coffee though.. that’s a habit that I don’t want to break!
And I love that bowl. It is perfect for oatmeal. 🙂
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
That bowl is so cheery…especially paired with the sunny cloth!
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Wish it was Fall…my favorite season. Looks yummy!
Leila @ Spinach and Skittles says
Do you follow Pioneer Woman’s method in your French press, or do you brew it like you normally would in the French press and then store it in the fridge? I followed her method (with your smaller ratio) and it was pretty weak…I wanted just it plus ice, haha. I’m trying to figure out how to make it stronger in taste.
KathEats says
Check the “Hard to Concentrate” post (I think I linked to it here?) I’m using a cold brew method much like PW’s. Although I am making it in a french press instead of tubs and cheesecloths.
