My mom and sister found this little hedgehog Xmas ornament while they were in Maine and it reminded them of the Mrs. Tiggy Winkle ornament I’ve had since I was little.
Matt and I don’t have a name for him, but this little friend has been sneaking around our house for a few weeks now. We’ve been taking turns hiding him in drawers, putting him on towels, in cups, etc. to out-surprise the other.
So this morning I nearly jumped out of my skin to find him ready for a cup of coffee! LOL!
I had mentally prepared myself for a first-thing-in-the-AM run and woke up to THUNDER!
The hourly forecast said it will be gone by 10AM so I changed my plans back. So much for being mentally prepared!
To prepare myself for breakfast I did 20 minutes of Heart Opening Flow #1 yoga. My upper body is a bit sore from all those kickboxing punches yesterday and the chest openers felt gooood.
Being stormy, it was an oatmeal kinda day.
- 1/3 cup oats, water, soymilk, pinch salt
- 1 tbsp chia
- 2 dates
- 1/2 cup mango, stirred in near end
- 1/3 cup Daisy cottage cheese, stirred in at end
- Sliced almonds + salty peanuts
- Barney Butter sludge
I have to say, I am really not the biggest fan of fruits other than banana in my oatmeal! I’m not sure if it’s a texture thing or what, but it kind of interrupts the flow. Maybe I’m cutting the pieces too big. Fruit still tastes good, but it’s not my very favorite style.
I had that delicious cup of coffee
He almost jumped in!!
I’m off to do a little research for a project on caffeine this semester!
Then go running.
Then eat lunch.
Then 3 classes.
Later!

I love your new friend! He’s adorable! He reminds me of a friend of mine, Myrtle, who stops by on my blog once in a while 🙂
Bonniejean says
That little guy is so cute! I love him in the French press. He would be the perfect character in a children’s picture book!
Daria (Summer of the CSAs) says
What an adorable little guy!
Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
OMG – cutest thing ever!!!
I’m not a big fan of fresh fruit in my oatmeal, other than bananas, either. I like dried figs and apricots – but can’t really get into the fresh berries, mangoes, etc. I think they’re just to tangy for my sweet, creamy bowl of oats…know what I mean?
kay (eating machine) says
that little creature is way too cute!
Jane says
try adding mango puree! or mango nectar. OR, if you are ever feeling like investing some time, juice a mango and add the pulp! not sure if you have a juicer, but you can achieve the same effect by straining mango puree through cheesecloth. it’s not as much hard work as it sounds like and i suspect it would be totally worth it (and make for a great photo op!) 🙂
Morgan (lifeafterbagels) says
That is either very funny or very cruel . . . especially in the morning 😀
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
LOL that hedgehog is so cute!! Looks real!
I think the problem with some fruits in oatmeal (I almost typed email), is that some fruits just don’t taste good warm, especially tropical ones. I dunno, I’m a ‘nana person 😛

Kath- (or anyone who knows)
are chia seeds similar to flax in that i am better off buyng them ground as the nutrients will be more available? thanks!
Lindsey (Mrs. LC) says
That little hedgehog ornament is so cute!!
I’m not too big on tropical fruits or berries in my oatmeal. They’re ok, but I prefer pear, apple, peach and sometimes banana. 🙂
Eve says
I’m with you – I really only like banana in my oatmeal. Berries would be next on my list, but for some reason the flavor combination doesn’t work as well for me.
Jo says
hey – I’m the same with fruit and oats – but what is good is either grated apple or chunks of cooking apple which you cook in the oats and it goes yummy and mushy – fab with lots of cinnamon and raisins.
Christie @ Quit Your Diet says
Aw, he is the cutest!!
I also do not like any other fruit in oatmeal other than banana. It is for sure a texture thing!
Sarah says
I’ll be interested to hear about your caffeine research results! Hopefully my addiction isn’t too bad for me 😉
Anne P says
It’s rainy here, too 🙁
Lizzy says
tehehe that ornament was sooo cute! i love that he’s popping up everywhere!
have a good busy day! 🙂
Nicole says
For some reason, when I add pb to my oatmeal, then raspberries or strawberries, it tastes good to me. Without the pb, it is too tangy. That little guy is sooooo cute!!
Rose says
Bill and I have this huge thing for hedge hogs, so needless to say this post sorta made my morning 🙂
Fallon says
haha my family also likes to hide little “things” and when you least expect it, it shows up. Always bring on a good little laugh 😉

omgomg he is SOOO CUTE eek. lol
bananas are hands down my fave for oatmeal fruitiness 🙂
have a good day, Kath!
Heather says
I hate when your morning exercise plans are spoiled by rain – I feel like getting ready mentally is 95% of the battle (at least for me).
I only like blueberries, raspberries and bananas in my oatmeal – I agree about the texture thing – maybe cutting them smaller would help.
leslie says
fruity oats are my favorite – but to each her own! 🙂 one of my favorites if i switch it up from banana is to add mango in the beginning. it takes a bit longer to cook down, but you end up with melty tropical oats – delicious with dried cranberries and coconut!
Madeline @ Greens and Jeans says
bananas and strawberries are the only things I can do in oatmeal. I can throw pretty much anything in my yogurt, but something about the oatmeal being hot makes me very picky about my fruit!
AnnQ says
Okay, that little hedgehog is a-dor-a-ble!!! 😀
shawna says
That little guy is so cute! DH and I used to hide this really awkward photo of me from middle school all around the house. We giggled a lot when we’d find it!
I’m not a fan of fresh fruit in my oats either. I just contemplated putting fresh raspberries in, but I thought they’d be better if I ate them on the side.
Trish says
LOVE the hedgehog! What a cutie…Name him “oats” !
Where abouts in MAine? I love in Maine on the coast and LOVE it here.
brandi says
that little ornament is so cute! i hope you get your run in! our weather is kind of sketchy today, too.
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
Your little friend is adorable! I would have laughed and rolled on the floor after I got back into my skin from fright 🙂 How fun!
I don’t really like Mango in oatmeal. I like some other fruits but still have yet to try banana. I just keep forgetting to buy them at the grocery everytime I go. Must add them to the grocery list for after our trip.
Evan Thomas says
Your little friend is hilarious
BethT says
OK, that thing is adorable but if I saw it in my coffeepot I would think it was a mouse…
Haleigh says
I can only add bananas or pumpkin to my oats, anything else makes the texture a bit whack. Hope you enjoy your day!
rhodeygirl says
I feel like the banana just makes it so creamy and sweet, so even if I want to add another fruit I must always at least have banana.
Kaye says
omg. What a cute little ornament! He looks so real and like he BELONGS. Nice that he is involved in all of the daily activities 🙂 I love collecting unique Christmas ornaments. Have a great day.
Sarah R says
Oh my gosh! That little guys is just too cute! I’ve realized that I don’t really like fresh fruit, besides banana, in my oats either. I can’t really figure out why though!
Pam says
Hello little friend, you are SO cute!
Pam (Highway to Health) says

I only like banana in oatmeal too…oh, and raisins and pumpkin 😀
Have a great Wednesday!
Becci says
I love fruit in oatmeal! I usually cook mine right in so that it is soft like the oats. I think it adds a sweetness, then I’m not tempted to add a bunch of brown sugar!
janetha says
hahahaha that dude is adorable and it cracked me up that he was ready for some coffee!
skinnyrunner says
haha! that made me laugh. we do the same thing with a christmas elf, the elf on the shelf book, and its so funny where it ends up sometimes.

My mom has a lifesize, realistic posture hedgehog of the same styling, it scares the bejesus out of me when the move him around to new locations! I’m with you on the oatmeal, I don’t want to concentrate on chewing my oatmeal!
Erika says
I have to agree with the fruit in oatmeal – I prefer bananas!
Also, I wanted to thank you for your post the other day Re: weighing yourself, and not letting it upset/ youhinder your eating.
As someone in recovery from anorexia, this is something that has been a challenge for me. It is so refreshing to hear a woman say ‘a number is not who I am’.
Thanks Kath!!

Sheri says
Your new friend is very cute! I laughed when I saw the picture of him in your coffee pot!
That really sucks about the rain pushing back your run!
Have a great day!
Ali says
Booooo for rainy days! But there is nothing better on a rainy morning than oatmeal! I am not a huge fan of other fruits besides bananas in my oatmeal either. I have to be in the mood for it, and if I am it is usually only berries that I can really stand. Looks like you have a busy day! I hope it is a good one!
Julie says
I made my first bowl of oats this morning since…wow, June maybe? I fell in love all over again at first wiff of bananas cooking. It was soo good. I actually tried the fresh fruit in them this morning, I put 1/4 of blueberries in the mix and they burst and made it a little watery, but the strawberries on top were quite nice!
Valerie (College Girl Eats) says

Oh my gosh! Love this little guy!
Also, I agree with you about the fruit with oatmeal. Sometimes I’ll put frozen blueberries in and that consistency is usually agreeable for me…
angieinatlanta says
You + Matt = cutest couple ever!
I love all the oats I’m seeing lately! Fall is here!
Stephanie says
I agree with you – I don’t usually like anything other than bananas in my oatmeal. For some odd reason, though, grapes can taste really good!

aww what a cute little guy!

how cute! i love x-mas ornaments, having been born on x-mas eve.
Susan says
I don’t like any fruit other than bananas in my oats either. I dunno, I just don’t dig the tartness with the taste of the oats. Banana is one of the few fruits that doesn’t have a hint of tartness.
Marisa (Trim The Fat) says
OMG, he is the cutest thing!
Mom says
But doesn’t the hedgehog have a name? And is the coffee pot a safe place? Not trying to intrude or nag, but….
Deb (SmoothieGirlEatsToo) says
Love the Bodum jail!!
Marcia says
Thunder! Haven’t heard that in a LONG time.
My niece lives near you, I think, just south of Charlotte in SC.
Erin says
kath i think your rain has made it’s way down to us in greenville SC. my tennis practice was canceled 🙁
one of my favorite fruits in oatmeal are peaches! dice a ripe peach in to small pieces and cook them with the oats from the beginning. the peach gets super tender and the flesh just melts in with the oats. yumm!!
love your blog!
Caroline says
So cute! I agree with you on the mixing other types of fruit in oatmeal. I think I can only handle bananas and apple. One time I tried berries and it weirded me out.
Tay says
LOL my sisters have been saying that line a lot lately. Can’t forget the accent! I don’t like fruit in my oatmeal either. At all. I’ve tried it, and negatory. I prefer more peanut buttery and desserty type oats!
Cara says
That little hedgehog (is that what it is?) cracks me up!
