It was a big day for my car Marge – she turned 100,000 in car years on the way here!
Wheeeeee!
After breakfast we drove out to Wilmington Island outside of Savannah and basically determined it was too far out for 1) A bakery to be visited by lots of people and 2) Us to live without feeling isolated.
It was very pretty though –
Then we found Washington Ave where there are supposed to be gorgeous houses. And there were!
They were lovely, but probably too expensive for us
Then we drove through commercial strip malls and stuff (which I don’t mind because we need them to live) and ended up in the boonies again. We don’t want to live here either:
I think Savannah is a beautiful city and we love the downtown historic district, but I think the conclusion is it didn’t seem very family friendly (or affordable) for a young couple looking for a hip town to raise kids (not anytime soon, guys, but we gotta consider these things!) We’re hoping to visit Charlottesville this summer, which seems to be a little more of what we’re looking for (minus the beach and palm trees ;( )
Before we headed back on I-95, we stopped at Food Lion to go to the bathroom. Grocery stores are good stops because they are usually clean and have lots of snack options
I got a 6-pack for the weekend 🙂
I got really hungry around 12:30 with an hour to go, so I broke into my mixed nuts again
We finally made it into Jax and then over to the beach where we’re staying. We were planning to go to a grocery store and pick up fruit and yogurt to take to the beach, but we heard our friends were going back to the hotel and so we decided on a small-restaurant kinda lunch using AroundMe:
We were totally surprised with how healthy this place was! And the decor was cool and modern
There was children’s artwork all over the walls –
I ordered a Greek Salad with Grilled Chicken, which came with pita and fruit
The salad was awesome and I inhaled it (both out of massive hunger and Matt’s necessity to get to the hotel to see the frat bros ASAP ). The chicken was awesome too!
He got egg salad and fruit. The sandwich was so fresh and delicious.
Lunch was filling, and eating fast made me feel too full, too fast 🙁 But hopefully it’ll keep me satisfied through the wedding until the reception tonight.
Gotta go – frat bros are telling stories over beer 🙂

Hi Kath! I found your blog via Graduate Meghann’s blog and just wanted to tell you that I love it! I made the banana pancake recipe you have an loved it–I have a slight gluten allergy and can’t have “normal” pancakes and have been craving them for weeks now–the banana pancakes totally hit the spot!!
There’s a Zoe’s Kitchen by my office–yummy, huh?
Have a great day!!

That looks like a great salad for sure! I love when the chicken on salads is actual chicken.

happy 100K, marge!
i love charlottesville — it is VERY UVA-centric (academia/student/college life-heavy) in my experience, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. they have lots of great restaurants and a very active running community!
Jess says
That place looks delicious! Love what you both ordered!

Wow those houses look beautiful but I know what you mean about trying to find somewhere you could go on to raise a family – there are a lot of different elements to get right for a move!

our car just hit over 100,000 at Christmas – so many miles!
Glad you guys are having a good time – that restaurant looks neat!
Charlottesville is about 3.5 hours from me – too far for me to visit frequently, but it would be awesome!

My Honda recently reached the 100,000 mark too. 🙂
I hope you make it up to Charlottesville soon. You’ll love it!

That neighborhood looks gorgeous, but I can see where it wouldn’t be the right fit for you and Matt. But dreaming up the future is always fun, rigth? 🙂

We had an old family car we lovingly named Marge, and we, too, threw her a celebration when she turned the big 100,000! Too funny. And Charlottesville is a such a fun town; my brother just graduated from UVA, so I’ve spent a lot of time there!

I believe Wilmington is where Dawson’s Creek was filmed?
Pamela says
Wilmington, NC is where Dawson’s Creek was filmed… and is also where I live and a wonderful, fun, active town on the coast. Have you thought about here? Actually, there is already a Great Harvest here… so don’t know if that would work for you.
I love your blog. I happened upon it looking for some easy, interesting resources to help get my patients (I’m a midwife) to eat REAL FOOD. And now I find myself needing to check what you are eating all the time. Great writing and great photos.
good luck to you!
Kath says
Yes, Dawsons was Wilmington, NC!! Pamela, there’s already one there :(. Glad you like KERF.

That restaurant looks so cute! Love me some fruit!

Too bad Savannah doesn’t look like it will work as a destination. I am glad, however, that you discovered Zoe’s! It’s a Birmingham-based business, so I gotta give them a shout-out. They’re famous for their chicken salad!
Courtney B. says
I LOVE Zoe’s.
I actually had that very same salad for lunch on Friday. My favorite is the chicken salad sandwich.
Mrs. Myers says
I absolutely love that your car has a name, and a cool name at that!
You have a great blog, Kath, by the way.
Susan says
Any restaurant that serves fresh fruit with its meals is a winner in my book! (the cute kid’s art doesn’t hurt either 😛 ) Hope you had a fun time with the frat boys 😛
Meg says
Yeah Marge! Wow! Zoe’s looks like a yummy place to eat!
Carole says
Kath-email me when you visit Cville…..I still think you could consider your internship here at good ol UVA!!! I have been here for 15 yrs and it is perfect weather…we were in Wilmington, NC before for 5 and that is a fave, too….
Lots of cool opportunities for your (and Matt’s) creative energy!!! Been an RD for awhile and there are lots of peope here who could give you ideas 🙂
Jessica says
My guess is that you will fall in love with C-Ville – vineyards, apple orchards, strawberry fields….all in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. It’s pricey living, but there are many reasons it was voted the best city to live in in the US. It even has a Whole Foods! (but no TJs). The students are friendly, the townsfolk are superb, and the scenery is beautiful. Besides, they could use a good bakery down there;). Good luck! (and how I miss my alma mater!)
Jessica says
Kath!!! I’m Jess…we actually got to have lunch back in the fall at Earth Fare with my roomate Olivia and I live in Charlotte. a Zoes JUST opened about three weeks ago in the Blakney shopping center and I work there! You should so stop by some time to grab some good fresh food!
Justy2003 says
Awe, happy 100,000 to Marge! Hopefully she will bring you many more miles 🙂
There’s a Zoe’s in Houston here too and I love the food + decor! Nice to find a healthy little cafe 🙂
