We got in our beach walk! It was short and sweet, but fun to wave goodbye to the waves.
Evidence there was a wild animal on the beach last night!!
After loading up our luggage onto the ferry, we were off –
Until we meet again!
For lunch we ate up our leftovers from the weekend – more ham and cheese sandwiches.
More carrots
More apples
The Announcement: Sky’s The Limit
The newest KERF endeavor: an online shop!
A few months ago I began a conversation with Open Sky. The company’s concept is "expert-powered e-commerce, connecting consumers to experts and the products they love and use." They proposed a store where I could host my favorite products and share information why I like them in photo, text and video format. A space where blog readers can go to learn more about an item and purchase it on the same page, if they so choose. Open Sky has all the customer service you’d find at any other online store – everything is guaranteed. This store isn’t about making money, although I do get a commission on items sold, but to me, it’s more about sharing information on cool stuff and making them easy to access.
In the shop you’ll find wheatberries and chia seeds along with items that I often link to for more information, like my point-and-shoot Canon or my Circulon cookware.
As the project evolved, we decided to also include items on the KERF Wish List, such as a countertop compost and mandoline, and items we came across that are just cool in general, like this rainbow whisk.
I hope to be adding lots of other items as they become available, particularly more food items that are hard to get in all regions of the country. And we’re researching a KERF sample pack of goodies too 🙂
I hope the shop is entertaining at the least!

Glad to be out of that long car ride! It’s freezing cold and raining here 🙁 We’ve got grocery shopping to do and I have a lot more studying for my Metabolism test on Wednesday.
See you for dinner!

Hi Kath!
I am a long-time reader but I haven’t commented a whole lot. I decided to comment today and ask you what kind of makeup you use or what your skincare regimen is? Your skin always looks so beautiful! Thanks!

Yes your skin looks great,I agree!
Hope you make lotsa dough on the commissions,or at least enough to help start your own Great Harvest dough-hee hee!
Interesting to watch bloggers like yourself try and make the blogging world into a career and be able to make some income from it.I really will be curious to watch this area develop over the next few years.Be fascinating to know what your income is this year compared to in a few years(from blog related work that is)
Such a new field,it’s so interesting!
I think you may do quite well on this endeavour.
Keep us informed!
Hey,skin care products could be a real seller?
You really don’t care about any income from it and are only doing it for stuff to be available for your readers?Well then kudos to you,I must be a bad person cause I would definitely be trying to build a solid income from projects like this and wouldn’t begrudge you in the slightest!
Go entrepreneurs go!!

WOW – that is so cool – and SO convenient! I was actually just looking at your camera last night and the link took me to Amazon, but it had changed to a product that wasn’t exactly yours, etc. This will be so great just to be able to purchase right at the site. So cool!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
the store looks cool, kath!
Ali@ Food, Fitness, Fashion says

I love pictures like that of vacation. Stuff that isn’t just people but the beauty of nature.
You new venture sounds nice. I’ll be interested in the food items. I search really hard for that LaCroix soda until I found it. Didn’t like it but I would be glad to know I don’t have to search as hard any more.

That’s a great idea- Kath-endorsed products! I’ll definitely take a look!

What a neat idea. I checked out some of your reviews, and I’m so glad to see that you’re giving an honest opinion and including some of the things that you don’t like about the products. I appreciate blogger reviews, but some people give the “rah, rah, this is the greatest product EVER!!!!” to everything they sample. So glad you’re not on the suck-up train!
*Andrea* says
hehe love the sandles tan 😉 what a neat concept – i wil ldefinitely check out the site! i trust your recommendations 🙂

Kristen @ frostingandfroth.com says
Very cool! I often wonder where to purchase some of the items you and other bloggers mention as favorites. This is a convenient way to access some of your best-loved products. Hope it takes off!
Gorgeous photos! Makes me want to make the drive to Santa Cruz (nearest beach to my home in Northern California) ASAP!
Marisa (Trim The Fat) says
I love your pictures at the beach!!!
Congrats on your new store!
Wendy says
Beautiful photos at the beach – I esp. love ones of the seashells scattered on the sand. Gorgeous!
Good luck with your new venture – very cool idea!
Laine says
Kath,
i was so happy for you with your new endeavor until I got to the line “This store isn’t about making money,…” I hope you aren’t saying that because you don’t think you deserve to make money, or because you are afraid of those people who are jealous that you earn money from your blog. You should make money and want to make money! You can’t be KERF and serve the world if you are not earning your worth!
I hate to see people apologizing for doing something they love that also earns money. I hope you make all the money you want from this.
Erin says
Congrats on the KERF store! I’m definitely excited about the wish lists!
And thanks for the french press info. That is DEFINITELY on my Christmas list this year 🙂
Leanne says
Awesome pictures! It looks so amazing there 🙂
Samuel says
That’s what I meant too ,Laine but you expressed it much more clearly!
hear, hear!
There’s NOTHING wrong with trying to make as good a living as one can from your skills and talents.
Money is not the point of living, but I also don’t think we need to act as if we are altrusitic about it either.
I wish you GOOD INCOME from activities related to your very GOOD BLOG Kath.
it’s quite simple, you deserve to get pai andf paid well for your work.It doesn’t matter is many bloggers are unpaid, such is life.
Be proud to be a successful selfemployed businesswoman-hey,it ain’t easy !
Samuel says
PS sorry about typos,ie altruistic etc…..
Kath says
Virginia,
Thank you! I don’t really have any secrets: a good diet, I don’t wash my face as night (I think it over-dries), I love Noxzema for a cleanser, I always moisturize after I get out of the shower, and I love, love, love Bare Minerals makeup!
Samuel + Laine,
Thanks for your honesty! I do think I deserve to make money, but I just wanted to clarify that I’m not expecting all of my readers to go buy all of the items right away. I really do see it foremost as an information barrier. But yes, income would be a very, very nice side dish.

It’s freezing cold and raining here, too. What happened to the lovely fall weather???
Susan says
That shop is such a neat idea! Also great for people who see products you always use, they can just go get them themself! 🙂
Whit says
ohhhh, the shop is AWESOME! I don’t have any money right now or I would SO buy something! And the beach pictures are gorgeous. Just gorgeous.
Jess says
Congrats on the Open Sky shop! Do you have 26 products on purpose?! I was just wondering if you have idea idea if the prices are comparable to say Amazon or other stores?
maria says
Your beach trip looks like heaven on earth, seriously! And a wild night! Hoorah!!!
BroccoliHut says
I bet this is the perfect time of year to be at the beach–the sweltering heat is gone, and the crowds have left. Enjoy your vacay to the fullest!!
KatieTX says
I noticed you don’t peel your carrots…I buy organic carrots, but feel the need to peel them. I have always done this. Does the peel not make the carrot seem dirty to you? Just curious about the peeling/non-peeling decision…
Kath says
Jess,
Just a wonderful coincidence 🙂
KatieTX,
I always wash them, but I don’t peel them. I am too lazy.
Kath
Sarah says
Love the pictures of the beach, wish I was there right now! It’s cold and rainy here too 🙁
Good luck with the test tomorrow and congrats on the new shop, looks great!
Seth @ Boy Meets Food says
Great idea with the new shop. BTW, the compost link is currently returning a 404 Page Not Found error.
Robin says
FYI that OXO mandoline is a piece of junk. I got one as a wedding present and I never use it. The blades are very tricky to take in and out, and the food holder doesn’t work at all! You should definitely invest in a more expensive model.
tracy says
I just bought a new kitchen scale (EatSmart) from your shopping site! 🙂
