This weather is SO DEPRESSING!!! Cold and cloudy. You would be shocked by the difference in my mood when the sun is out (although maybe no since I talk about the weather so much!) I just feel so blah right now and don’t want to do anything – school work, house work, go to the mall, cook, read. Nothing is appealing 🙁
OH MY GOSH – as I was typing that our sun came out for 30 seconds for the first time all day!!!!!!!!!!!
Such a coincidence!
This morning the husband and I went running, which was fun. We did about 5.5 miles. I was actually surprised by how well it went considering the mini food hangover I had. Once home we decided to head to the grocery store before lunch since we weren’t very hungry yet. We showered, dressed and headed back outside to bike to Harris Teeter. 30 minutes later we were back with our groceries. Since the Thanksgiving Challenge we have continued to keep our grocery bills down, although not quite as low as it was that month. Last week was $40 and this week was $44. What we haven’t been doing a good job of is our restaurant spending. We’ve been out 4-5 times this month and it shows. Next month will be cut-back time again.
For lunch I had more kale – and more of that yummy Butternut + Lentil soup.
Plus some crunch + 2 tsp of PB
And tea for warmth!

Polly did her first blog video with some kitchen yoga. She’s so cute!
Hopefully the sun has inspired me to be productive….

Heather McD (heather eats almond butter) says
I did sweet Polly’s video this morning before lunch. Love her.
I’m the same way with the weather Kath. If it’s gloomy outside, I feel the same way. I need sunshine!
Stay warm this afternoon!
Biz319 says
I know what you mean about the weather – while we have sun, the air temp is only 8 degrees today. The snow is dirty and ice is everywhere.
I need spring stat!
I wish I liked kale – it always looks so good!
Hope you have time to relax today!
Cyclist Kate says
I can’t understand how you keep your grocery bill so low for the two of you! I’m pretty careful and I easily spend twice that for just myself (and a few things for the boyfriend). Any tips?
Rachel says
That soup looks great! And good luck with the sunshine – I’m exactly the same way. I just bought a sun lamp, in fact. A little late, but hopefully it’ll get me through Feb. and March!
Whitney says
Sounds like you have already been pretty productive today…a run and grocery shopping!
I am lucky that it is super sunny here today but it is COLD (like 7 degrees) so I am spending the day working out in my gym in my building and baking bread!
Oh She Glows says
Aww Polly is so cute! She her journey to health story was featured on my blog. She rocks!! Love the video. 😀
The soup looks fab Kath- did you cook the kale?

I know how you feel. I hate gray days too. My friend recently moved to London, and it is so gray that she bought all these special lights for her house to combat SAD.
Kiersten says
your soup looks so good

I am the same way with weather. Thank goodness I live somewhere sunny, but I was bored and unproductive feeling all day yesterday when it was cloudy.
Victoria says
I cannot stand the winter weather, so of course I live in the middle of the country where we haven’t seen much sun for a month. At least it always makes me appreciate spring even more. 🙂
Mel says
Sounds like an awesome run!
I feel the same when the sun goes away. I miss it and the warmth too!
Sandy says
I seriously struggle with SAD and have a light box which I use every day the sun does not shine. The last two years have been worse since one of my sons now goes to school in Texas and the sun shines there a lot more! I find that weather is always one of my topics of conversation when I talk to someone who lives in another part of the country. I deal okay with cold as long as the sun is shining. I would expect you to have lots more sun and warm weather in Charlotte so just goes to show you, the grass is always greener somewhere else.
K says
Oh, winter – why do you have to be so gray?! I love when I can actually pull out my sunglasses – it really does make me happier!
Love the soup!
Shelby says
I didn’t want to do anything today either, I had to force myself to go workout! At least the gym is indoors.
Mmm, that soup looks so unbelievably delicious!!!
Nicole says
the soup looks delish! i agree with you about the weather. its so depressing when its cold and rainy D:
zestycook says
The weather is the same here Kath…. very Blah! Your soup on the other hand looks great
Lee says
It’s blah here too. And what’s funny is that I got Chinese food for lunch and my fortune said, “It’s a sunny day.” I guess it must have meant metaphorically!
theoddbod says
soak up that vitamin D! haha don’t worry atleast you can go outside! It’s sunny everyday where I am but you can’t hang out outside because it’s minus 40!(celsius)
Katelyn says
I like your phrase “food-hangover”! I love the placemat you used! Maybe you’ve used it before, but I just really noticed it today.
Having no sun is not fun =/ S.A.D. is a real thing that can happen so easily to so many people! I used to live in dreary Michigan, and bought a light that has the same spectrum as the sun; it was a wonderful thing.
Meredith says
I know exactly what you mean about the weather influencing your mood! Similarly, when I was in Boston, the sun would set at 3:30 in December! It was so depressing, especially combined with the cold!
Your soup looks really good! I’m going to have to try adding kale to mine sometime 🙂
Kath says
Cyclist Kate,
I’ve been keeping it low by only buying produce and kitchen staples, such as diced tomatoes, canned beans, and yogurt. We have a year’s worth of grains in our pantry, and of course we have bread, so I have a grain-buying freeze. I try to plan one meat per week, although this week it’s just tofu, which I guess isn’t a meat!
Oh She Glows,
I just reheated the soup on top of the kale.
Kath

Hope the sun stayed out. Yeah Polly!

such a cute video!
and that soup looks good, again! I love butternut anything.
Jeremy says
Hey Kath,
Never commented before but as a diagnosed sufferer of S.A.D. I can tell you that if you’re really feeling the effects of low sunlight, you may get some real and fast benefit from a vitamin D suplement. I live up in Boston where the sun’s rays don’t even hit us at the right angle during the winter months ( see the research from Tufts University http://tufts.edu/home/feature/?p=vitamin_d) and I find that taking 1000 IU of vitamin D is the difference between a functional winter and a dysfunctional one.
Kath says
Jeremy ,
Thanks for the info! Perhaps I should up the frequency of my vitamin intake.
