Guf, I am having trouble with my Ei-Fi again. I just let it sit there and upload while i do chores, and after 30 minutes nothing happened so I finally just did it manually. It went “bad” again during an upload, so not sure what’s going on.
I worked from bed again this morning and got 2 small things turned in – discussion boards for my online Psych class. I’ve just got 1 major and 2 minor things to do today, but otherwise it’s a clear day – both in my mind and in the skies!
USMills sent me some cereal samples (hence the cereal overload!) and included in the box was Farina. Some of you have asked me about this before, and I’d never tried it. It seemed to be a lot like grits, and unfortunately isn’t a whole grain. It was fun to try though, and like the ugali for the Kenyans, hopefully this will give me lots of energy for my mid-morning run! I can already feel the energy rising up 🙂
All the info: Farina.
I used 3 tbsp (1 serving) with a cup of water. I didn’t want to experiment with milk yet, but I did add banana and used the slow-cook method of putting everything in cold rather than boiling the water first. I also added a tbsp of oats – but they kind of disappeared.
Since the farina is not a whole grain, I added back fiber and vitamins in the form of cereal topping. This was about a quarter cup of AgavePlus granola and 1/3 cup Kashi GoLean. Along with a drizzle of maple syrup and a spoonful of Naturally More.
Just like grits! It was quite filling. We’ll see how long it holds me over, but I suspect the cereal addition was a good choice in that factor.
I am off to prep for my oatmeal experiment I am doing in Food Lab tomorrow. And then I might clean the kitchen floor on my hands and knees because my mom says that’s the best way to get it clean. Our floor is ALWAYS dirty!!!
Then it’s running time!
Happy Birthday To Nate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have a wonderful, sunny Thursday
Nate says
Yay! Happy Birthday to me. If you want to regift that Garmin, I won’t judge.
Angie says
Have a great run – enjoy the sunshine! Can’t wait to hear what you think about the garmin!
Graze With Me says
Farina, that’s a new one! It looks good, but how are the nutritional stats on it (fiber & protein especially)? Gotta have that nut butter to make it complete. 🙂
Hadley says
You should also try brown rice cream — it’s like Farina, only made from brown rice!
FoodsThatFit says
Kath-
You are going to love the Garmin Forerunner!!! I have the same one and love it. Honestly, I don’t know how I ever ran without one now.
Farina! Totally reminds me of the Cream of Wheat I ate as a kid. 🙂
JENNA says
Farina sounds interesting. I’ve never much cared for cream of wheat but I haven’t had it since I was a kid so maybe my taste buds have changed. have a great run!
Kori (All Things B.) says
Kath- I’m loving the placemats from your Mom! Any idea where she bought them?
Courtney (The Hungry Yogini) says
Breakfast looks yummy! Sorry about the computer problems. I hate when that happens!!! Have a great day!
VeggieGirl says
Never had farina before.
Happy birthday to Nate, indeed!!
Meghan (Making Love In The Kitchen) says
I have a little aversion to foods that say ‘enriched’ on them- only because I do my best to get the goodness from food in its original form. But I take supplements so I suppose that’s a bit of a double standard. Either way- I would buy that cereal simply for the awesome retro box!
Organic Girl aka Ashley H says
I like the brown rice farina that bobs red mill makes. Very creamy.
I know what you mean about the floors. I always feel like my kitchen floors are a mess even if I just cleaned then!!
brandi says
enjoy your run!
Moran (The Running Addict) says
Oh the box is cute!! Haha!
Bec says
An oatmeal experiment?? I can’t wait to read about it!
Danielle says
I’ve never tried farina or grits in any form I wonder if maybe I’d like them?
Have a great day!
Rose-Anne says
Kath, I think your breakfast posts are *slightly* addictive. I’m finding myself stopping by your blog just to see what the morning meal was.
Somehow I only seem to notice my dirty floors on Saturday mornings…maybe I should invent some goggles that disguise dirty floors so you can ignore them when need be? 😉
Vanessa says
Have a great run! I’m jealous of the Garmin 🙂
Hallie says
Our floors are always dirty too but I never seem to notice..that or any other mess. Luckily I live with “Mr. Clean” who keeps our condo tidy.
Farina looks interesting! I wonder if you can bake with it…
Christina says
When I went home for break last time my Dad had bought Wheatina and it was really good & the nutritional stats were better than oatmeal! I never heard of it before then but it kinda of reminded me of a wheaty farina. You should check it out after your cereal overload situation has calmed down a bit!
Can’t wait to see your oatmeal experiment tomorrow! Sounds like the most interesting food lab ever!
zestycook says
Have a great run! You are going to be hungry 🙂
Jennifer says
I’m glad you’re not going to do 26.2. I don’t see the point of destroying your knees (especially running on pavement or concrete) and putting your body under so much stress!
Have a great (shorter) run!
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
I grew up eating Farina… I love the stuff!
Kara says
Ew technical problems are the worst! Hope you get them worked out!
megan says
does anyone have any opinions on a garmin vs. polar heart rate monitor? it seems like the garmin has more going for it, but if i want calorie/heart rate stats for indoor things like areobics, spinning, zumba, etc, can the garmin do that? is polar less expensive? thanks! any info would be helpful. 🙂
Run Sarah says
Have a great run! Oatmeal experiment sounds fun too 🙂
Jessica says
Enjoy your outdoor run! And a dog does wonders of picking up all those food crumbs and spills that hit the floor…
Sarah (Tales of Expansion) says
i love these cereal adventures, kath — i’m learning so much 🙂
also, i know this is super last minute, but i’m going to be in charlotte this weekend for a wedding and just realized i will have 5 hours to kill tomorrow between when my plane lands at noonish and when my friend arrives. i was thinking i’d get a cab to “uptown” and explore a bit, but i know nothing about the area. do you have any suggestions?? (i think you have lab? otherwise, i’d love to meet you for lunch or something if you’re around!)
happy scrubbing!
Beadie @ What I Ate Yesterday says
Hope the Farina holds you over. I have never had it before but grits don’t hold me over very well.
Marissa says
Happy Bday Nate!
katecooks says
i love farina! i used to eat it for dinner all the time in college when i was having home nostalgic moments. it’s awesome when topped with some milk (cold/hot combo), brown sugar & golden raisins!!!
Felish says
Mmmm I love farina! I have it for breakfast at least 3 times a week, and I find that it usually does a great job of tiding me over until lunch. I like to stir in a little brown sugar, sliced almonds, and a few flakes of unsweetened coconut. A cup of water, a minute in the microwave and it’s delicious!
Sarah (lovINmytummy) says
That box looks like its from 1953.
Happy Birthday Nate!
Kailey (SnackFace) says
Mmm the farina sounds good. Maybe not as filling as oats, but with the additions you made you should be good.
I’m so jealous of the Garmin! Can’t wait to see how you like it!
Sharon says
Oh wow, I have never tried that before, but it does sound delicious, and looks delicious too! Thanks for sharing!
And Happy Birthday to Nate!!
Michelle Hisae says
Is it kind of like Cream of Wheat? My parents used to let me eat that as a special treat on the weekends as a kid. Not the health nut sub-10 years old, I was generous with the milk and stirred in sugar to pump up the sweetness factor. Oh the memories of childhood!
Erika says
Kath, your bfast never ceases to amaze me!!! (and make me drooooll!! LOL)
Have a wonderful day – give yourself some much needed time to relax and take in the sun 🙂
Peace~Erika

Can’t wait to hear how the Garmin works for you. My goodness, I haven’t seen/heard of/thought of Farina in AGES! Curious to see how it holds up to your usual oats.
K says
I’ve never had Farnia! Thanks for the info. I’m also curious as to how the switch up will work for you!
Heather says
Oatmeal in food lab!? YAY!! That sounds totally fun… can’t wait to hear the recap!
Interesting cereal. Sounds like you could be pretty creative with it! I don’t think it could ever replace oatmeal though 😉
Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
Ew, my floor is always dirty too, although I never get on my hands and knees to clean it, I think I’m too squeamish to do that!! good for you though!
Jaime says
Ugh, the kitchen floor. I try not to think about it. Ewwwwww. I scrubbed my whole kitchen the other day and the floor is still left to do. At least it is a workout, right?
Rebekah says
I love Farina! Just got a box recently after not having it for a long time. It’s tons better than Cream of Wheat, less wheaty pieces to get stuck in your teeth and just a lighter, yummier taste.
I like it with raisins, milk, and just a little itty bit of butter.
Keri R. says
Seriously everytime I read your blog it makes me crave nut butter!
Life.Art.MidnightSnacks. says
Hi Kath! I have never posted before but I have been following your blog since the beginning- so much that you inspired me to start my own! Anyways I just wanted to say that your healthy recipes are so helpful when my husband and I want to eat healthy but can’t think of anything- thanks for the great blog!!!

I’ve never had farina. It seems like a Minnesota breakfast. Or a Southern one. I bet it’s good and creamy.
