We decided to do something different with our run today and drove to EarthFare to run in a new neighborhood. We’re getting a little tired of all the 4-5 mile routes that radiate from our house, so it was so fun to have a change of scenery. And best of all, we ended up at the grocery store so we got the shopping done too! We ran about 4.5 miles, and although I had had breakfast almost 2.5 hours prior, I was NOT fully digested and was a little sluggish. I think oatmeal is the only thing I can run after! Once I ran in an afternoon after a salad for lunch and blarg was that a bad run! But I was OK today – just not as swift as usual.
Grocery Shopping
We actually went to two grocery stores about 1 mile apart – EarthFare for the specialties (hemp milk, brie + strawberries) and Harris Teeter for the rest. Here’s what we came home with:
Produce
- Green Beans
- Carrots + Celery
- Baby spinach
- Bananas
- Garlic
- Mushrooms
- Apples
- A sweet potato + russet potato
- Avocado
- 2 bell peppers
- More bananas
- A pineapple
- and the first strawberries of the season!
I am trying to only buy USA products and these were from Florida so I thought we’d give them a try. I wanted the $1.99 blueberries but they were from Chile 🙁 But I figured since Jenna (hi!!) is having all this warm weather in Florida that strawberry season is starting early. Unfortunately they weren’t the greatest I’ve ever had…I think I’m about 3 months too early.
Dairy + Pantry
- Whole flax seeds
- Maple Syrup
- 2 Fages
- Dannon plain low-fat yogurt
- A small wedge of brie cheese (for tonight’s dinner!)
- A mocha Nectar bar I just HAD to try!
- 3 kinds of Stonyfield for the husband
- Tempeh. Coming up tomorrow night!
- A nice stock of vanilla hemp milk <3
- And some all-natural turkey bacon
Now you know all the dinners I have planned!! Darn!
Lunch
The centerpiece = a hot ciabatta roll fresh out of the oven. SO chewy and doughy!!
Plus a cup of leftover soup –
And a handful of strawberries –
From above with some homemade iced tea –
Lunch was about 480 kcal, 14 grams fiber and 15 grams protein.
My egg breakfast held me over almost 5.5 hours!! Now that’s including a run, a sample of honey in the grocery store and 1 strawberry when I got home, and I was pretty hungry when I finally sat down at 1:30, but still quite impressive. Guess I have a protein stomach after all 🙂 I’m loving having bigger breakfasts! I only wish I knew to do this the first 2 years of weight loss…
Off to run some errands and play around the house!

Hey Kath!
Quick question… why do you only buy US products??
Have a good weekend!

Help! I’m making some muffins for my sisters bday and it says “with a pastry blender or two knives, cut in butter until mixture resenbles large coarse crumbs” what does that mean? How do I do that?? I don’t have a pastry blender. Thx.
Kath- I always go to two grocery stores!

Nice haul of groceries you have there!! Oooh, I think you’ll like the tempeh – great source of protein, fiber, and other essential nutrients; and it has a wonderful taste when cooked properly! :0D and I’m loving your stash of hempmilk, of course, haha.
My goodness, look at that fresh ciabatta roll – what a beaut!
Enjoy the rest of your Saturday afternoon!

Hi Molly, About the pastry blender for the longest time I never knew I had one (I always thought it was a potato masher or somthing) but Im pretty sure all you need to do is take the two knives, and basicly cut the butter into the dry ingredients till it looks like a a crumble, with the butter somewhat coating the dry ingredients if that makes sense. Itll be almost like what you put on top of a crumble.
I hope this helps and doesnt sound too confusing, this is what mine always looks like when I use a pastry blender.

What brand and type maple syrup do you buy?

What’s your pace when you run? How do you know you ran 4.5 miles did you drive it first to check. Just wondering. I’m so jealous that you guys are having nice weather here in Texas it’s raining. I’m hoping it gets better Sunday i’ve got 8 miles ahead of me.

I have a quick one– I love kath and jennas blogs but i am also looking for one that is a bit more focused on exercise any suggestions?
Samantha says
Molly-
I don’t know if you have a food processor, but if you do, that is the BEST way to make pastry. I like to put the blade in the freezer before using it, then when it’s nice and cold, I use it to “pulse” the cold butter and flour until it is crumbly. Otherwise, you do have to use the cumbersome knife method, which is basically a steak-cutting motion only you are replacing the fork with another knife (does that make sense??) Good luck…

Kath I can’t believe they have cocoa nectar bars now. They don’t have them listed on the website yet, do you mind sharing the nutritionals and ingredients. I am allergic to almonds, that’s why I ask.
Also, have u tried their pomagrant cherry flavor-it uses cashews which sounds kinda weird. Thanks and have a fun day!

Hemp milk sounds so yummy, I can’t wait to try some next round at the grocery store!
Does the sound of strawberry season coming three months early scare anyone? Jeez. 🙁

i like harris teeter, but i often find it’s just as expensive as whole foods! trader joe’s actually seems to be the cheapest, but they don’t always have everything i want.
like you, i am trying to be better at using stuff up before it goes bad, but it really is hard to keep everything ‘in sync’. i’m not quite as creative and flexible with recipes yet, but maybe i’ll bet there.
your run sounds nice 🙂 do you two run together? are your paces similar naturally? if so, i am jealous!

Has anyone tried Almond Breeze almond milk? I bought the unsweetened vanilla kind today and I was curious if anyone has had it? what do you use it for?

Kath, I think it’s funny that you mentioned eating bigger breakfasts and weight loss. When I was a teen and trying to lose weight, I tended to focus cutting calories *with* breakfast. 1 cup of cheerios with 1 cup of milk was a typical breakfast…fast forward 1 hour, and I was STARVING (not to mention bored out of my mind with cheerios!)
SO, all this to say, I’m right there with you in loving big breakfasts!! 😀 Such a great start to the day, and I love that boost of energy it gives throughout the day. 🙂

Oh, I LOOOVE the Blue Diamond almond milk. I made the mistake of trying the Pacific unsweetened almond milk and it was like pouring drywall into my tea. Only more disgusting.
Anyway, yes, I heartily recommend the Blue Diamond kind…even if it has a little more in the way of additives than other brands.

Susan- I checked out the Clif site and found info on the cocoa bars (I LOVE nectar bars, so I had to check this out immediately! As a nectar bar devotee, I would definitely recommend the cherry pomegranate- YUM). The one Kath got does have almonds, but there are two other flavors, dark chocolate raspberry and dark chocolate walnut that are almond-free. Happy snacking!

I know this is kind of random, but I was wondering if you happen to go to the Harris Teeter that is near a salon called Euphoria Salon and Spa?? And a Boarder’s Books?? I live an hour and a half away and used to get my hair cut at Euphoria.

Tempeh is my favorite! I hope you like it too – I can’t wait to see how you prepare it for dinner. 🙂

*i asked everyone about exercise when sick and thought i’d share *
After a trip to the doctors, I have a sinus infection ( from one of my one-on-one students I teach)…AND The Flu (from my fiance who got it from his work)….. YUCK!!!
sorry i had to let out my misery here… but to make up for it … i wanted to post a site that i remembered using when i just saw kath’s post about running a different route this weekend.
www.mapmyrun.com
You can not only enter in your starting location to calculate mileage of wherever your run, but you can find trails and “count calories”… you can also find events in your area, and shop “deals” for running stuff.
Thought I would share because I am plotting the courses I will run when i am healthy again.. if ever…ick!

Patricia,
I don’t ONLY buy US products, but I’m making an effort to buy as local as possible. Not only is it better for the environment to not waste fuel flying blueberries from chile, the fruits and veggies also lose some of their nutrients on the ride over (which is why many say frozen is better than fresh if fresh comes from afar). We’re hoping to join a Community Sponsored Farm this summer (CSA) which will mean fresh organic produce from just down the road, but if North Carolina doesn’t grow it, I at least want to try to get it from within the U.S.
Rebecca,
Grade A, Harris Teeter store brand.
Sirenjess,
I am a SLOW runner! But my pace really depends on the day. On a good day I might do 8.5-9.0 minute miles, on a slow day, maybe 10 minute miles. It all depends on the weather, my physical state, emotional state, music, running buddies vs. alone, etc. I ran a 5K last spring in 24 minutes when I had PERFECT conditions, but most days I’m closer to 9.5 minute miles. I use Google Pedometer to track my mileage: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
Sarah,
I wouldn’t call Harris Teeter “cheap” but when products are on sale they’re very inexpensive and they have a wide variety of store-brand products. TJ’s is cheaper, but their produce is horrible!
The husband and I run together, but he does have to run much slower with me and gets frustrated at times. Sometimes he goes ahead and circles back to get me. But we enjoy running together, and I try to keep up with him as best I can!
KellyL,
I used to buy the unsweetened almond milk, but I decided skim was better tasting. I don’t think the plain almond milk holds a candle to vanilla hemp! I have not tried the sweetened almond though.
Kate,
We do go to that one on occasion! We have one right by our house, but that one, informally called the “Taj Ma-Teeter” because it’s HUGE is really nice and fancy. I have seen that salon but I can only afford Great Clips 🙁 Small world!
B_Hlthy,
Hope you’re feeling better!! I’ll have to see how MMR comes to Google Pedometer!
