Days when I have to wake up to an alarm clock are never as fun. I am so spoiled to have a flexible sleep schedule most days. But today we have a super fun event to attend and had to get up and going.
Alarm clock blared.
THEN, my car alarm randomly went off!?
It was like the car knew I was awake. I accidentally put my car keys (and remote) in the dryer yesterday and I think that messed with one of the sensors. Hopefully it won’t happen again, or we’ll get kicked out of the neighborhood!
I did not want to run this morning. But who does when they’re lying in bed!? I used my visualization technique to think about how I’d feel if I went or if I didn’t. If I’d want to run in the afternoon (which is never as successful) or just take a day off. Ultimately visualization won and I started getting dressed. Once I was in my workout clothes, I was pumped to go! Always works.
Had half a trail mix bar before we left. I didn’t care for this one.
During our 4.8 miles, Matt and I discussed what to have for breakfast and the fact that we were running (ha!) 45 minutes behind schedule. It was decided that cereal would be most appropriate. I really do enjoy bowls of cold cereal, but they are never as satisfying on lazy mornings, so sometimes I look forward to busy mornings as an excuse to have a bowl.
Today’s bowl, however, featured steamed milk made by Matt while I showered! He heated 2 cups of milk for us on the stove-top to 150* (and turned off the heat then so it wouldn’t burn).
It was definitely fun not to have COLD cold cereal!
My bowl was an awesome mix. I find with cereal the more textures I can get the more I enjoy the eating process and don’t just wolf it down
Here’s what my buckwheat looks like. I’m positive it’s toasted, and it’s got a nice roasty crunch to it! Perfect for the cereal bowl.
Into the bowl:
- ~1/4 cup Ancient Grains granola
- ~1/4 cup wheatberries (cooked)
- ~1/4 cup Cheerios sample
- ~1/4 cup POM seeds
- ~2 tbsp buckwheat
- ~1 tbsp oats
- ~1 tbsp flax
- ~1 tbsp coconut
- ~1 cup milk
Café!
We are going to a vineyard for a blind wine tasting!!! It’s a press event and I am thrilled to be invited. More details to come! [PS. Spitting WILL be involved today!]
Meg says
Car alarms and running late are the perfet excuse for a bowl of cereal, and what a concept to heat the milk! So seasonal 😉 Enjoy your day – can’t wait to hear about the wine tasting, and spitting haha!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Great idea on the steamed milk. I will have to try that when cereal is the only option! Have fun today! When wine tasting is involved, I am guessing that is a given!
Michele @ Healthy Cultivations says
I agree the steamed milk is a very good idea.
It always intrigues me how people can run after just having a small snack before going. I always feel like I have NO FUEL or energy if I don’t eat something more substantial… or is it just in my head? I have a fear of passing out or something if I don’t have enough fuel… especially if I’m miles from home.
Kristy @ KristyRuns says
Non-cold cereal is genius.
I’m about to head out on my [late] morning run. You’re so right: putting on the gear and dressing the part always helps me get out the door! 🙂
Have fun!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Visualization always helps me too. I hate working out in the afternoon!
Georgie says
I have never thought to mix lots of different kinds of cereals for breakfast – or put pom seeds in my cereal. I am definitely going to have to try that soon!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
Why the spitting today?
<3 the cereal bowl – looks delicious!
Kath says
Because there are 60 wines to taste!
CaSaundra says
I don’t know if I ever remember not seeing oatmeal for your breakfast haha!! It’s always nice to switch it up once and awhile–have a wonderful day Kath!
Cathy B. @ Bright Bakes says
Love the idea of warming milk for cereal…I don’t have cold cereal often, but when I do(if it’s in winter) the worst part of it is that when breakfast is done I feel…..cold! Great idea…
Have fun at the vineyard!
love,
cathy b. @ brightbakes
Lauren at KeepItSweet says
the wine event sounds awesome! never thought to heat milk for “cold” cereal
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
Fun day! I’m heading to Mount Vernon in a bit and hoping it’s decorated for Christmas already. 🙂
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
I like the idea of having warm milk over cold cereal. I love cold cereal but its not as satisfying in chillier weather because it lacks the warmth. Great idea!
holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
Have fun at the wine tasting!
I like how the pic of your coffee looks like a moon shadow. So cute!
Katie says
In my old apartment, someone right outside had a car alarm that would go off without fail at 3am EVERY morning. I have no idea why or who’s it was but it sucked!
Stephanie says
Love wine tasting! Is it for a new winery around there?
Kiran says
Enjoy your vino tasting adventures. Sigh. No vineyards in Florida – thanks weather 😛
Shannon (A Better Me) says
LOL! I’m terrible about hitting the panic button when I put my keys in my pocket. It sucks being startled by your car alarm. Worse when you’re the one that set it off. Have a great day!
Jillian@ Reshape Your Life says
A blind wine tasting sounds like alot of fun! Can’t wait to read about it!
I’ve never thought of putting warm milk into my cereal… I’ve heated up my cereal with milk in it but then it’s kind of like oatmeal so that’s a different concept. lol
stacey-healthylife says
I love cereal when it’s got a variety of kinds. Have fun at the event sounds like a good time.
Lisa Fine - lisasfoods says
Looking forward to hearing about the blind wine tasting. I’ve only been to one wine tasting and one mead tasting, but your California trip and other vineyard visits makes me want to try them more. The only thing I don’t like is when you’re the only ones there, so you feel like you’re being judged and watched.
christina cadden says
Sounds like you are going to have a fun day!
Camille says
Would you really get kicked out of your neighborhood!? I hope you’re kidding!
mariaeatsbeets says
Your coffee has a luna in it.
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I’ve always been tempted to warm up milk for cereal, but tend to worry that it would mess up the texture…glad it gets an A+, I’ll have to try that tomorrow!!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
a blind wine tasting? that sounds so fun! i really need to find some great local wineries 🙂
Darlene says
Hey Kath1
I just wanted you to tell your hubby that tommorrow on the discovery channel at 10pm
they are having a new show called Brewmasters!
I am in NY so not sure if the time is the same as yours
Simply Life says
Great technique- I always remind myself that I’ll be in such a better mood even after a short workout!
Felicia (a taste of health with balance) says
what a fun cereal idea! not your typical straight out of the box… i only save cereal for rush rush mornings, and its never holds me over anyway, so usually i have it as a snack instead 🙂
Natalia - a side of simple says
Oh I’m so happy to see I’m not the only one who needs different textures in my cold cereal! If I don’t have a mix I get too bored and then don’t feel satisfied at all. I need some crunch, some surprises, a nice mix 🙂 I’ve never tried steam milk, though. I think that should be my next endeavor.
Amy at TheSceneFromMe says
I myself just had some cereal with warm milk! I liked holding on to the warm bowl to warm my hands just as much as I enjoyed the warm goodness going in to my stomach!
What a thought to put granola on bread. A good crunchy addition to a soft slice!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i’m lucky i don’t have an alarm clock wake me up 90% of the time as well. though when i do set it, i’m always up hours before in anticipation!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
i love the hot milk idea! have you seen the shredded wheat (or is it frosted flakes?) commercial advising mom’s to heat the cereal? great idea for a winter cereal ad.
Katie (The Boston Marathoner) says
I’ve never tried buckwheat! What else do you use it for?
Dana @ my little celebration says
Steamed milk in cereal? How do you and Matt think of these things? Genius, I tell you. Genius.
Happy weekending,
Dana
Caitlyn (A Spoonful of Life) says
Steamed milk is a good idea! Definitely nice on a cold winter morning!
Josie @ Skinny Way Of Life says
I Love wine events! have fun! great idea for steaming the milk first! That will come in handy on cold mornings when I don’t have time to make something hot but can’t handle the coldness of cereal on a 23 degree morning! Have a great weekend!
kate says
Sometimes theres nothing more satisfying than a bowl of cereal!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Isn’t it amazing how waking up to an alarm makes SUCH a difference in your day? I always feel better waking up before hand.
Virginia @ YtotheUmmy says
my brothers and i used to “steam” our milk before we went to bed–but really it was just popping it in the microwave 😀
Felicity says
I never thought to add warm milk to cold cereal- brilliant! I’m gonna try that tomorrow. : )
Sana says
Does warm cereal make the cereal more soggy?
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
I really love plain cereal with milk, but it never keeps me full enough for breakfast, so I like to have a small bowl as a bed time snack! I like Matt’s idea to warm up the milk first. That would put me right to sleep! 😀
Christin@purplebirdblog says
Buckwheat is so freakin’ delicious!
Amy says
For some reason, the consistency of coconuts only works with chocolate for me. I do love coconut water and ice cream.
Hannah says
I almost always microwave my cereal bowls to warm them up a little. Somehow I think it makes the flavours all blend together better 🙂
Heidi - apples under my bed says
What a varied, delicious bowl of cereal! Great tip with the visualisation!
