I went to bed with a late alarm set so I could sleep in as much as I needed. But I woke up at 7 with the sun shining into my window whispering “Come out and play.”
So I went
A beautiful 5.6 mile run along the water that left me flushed in the face and shining back at the sun. I even managed a few sub-9 minute miles! I love these big city running paths so much. So scenic with the company of so many other exercisers.
I did have a bite of banana before I left
And a sip of this SoBe drink which I did not care for at all.
I came back in time to quickly shower, pack, and eat. And quick I was!
On the way back from my run I stopped into the hotel cafe and got…a skim milk! I planned to incorporate it into breakfast. Some people go out for coffee, I go out for milk 🙂
Once back, I did make a cup of coffee (which was free and easy). This was an African blend by Starbucks and I have to say it was very good! I normally despise Starbucks’ bitter burnt coffee, but this was exceptional and flavorful. I put about 4 oz of milk in the coffee and saved the other 8 or so for some cereal.
For my entree, I made a delicious cold cereal mixture of instant oatmeal, banana and one of MarathonVal’s chocolate coconut raw bites.
OH MY GOSH – this chocolately thing was absolutely divine!!! Like raw brownie batter rolled with coconut and nuts. I’m definitely going to have to make them at home. Since it was all healthy ingredients, I considered it appropriate for breakfast despite being pretty decadent.
I just poured the cold milk over the oats and ate it like I would a granola. It was so simple being no-cook and all and tasted pretty good too.
My suitcase is literally bursting at the seams. I’m so glad I brought it half empty. I clocked in at 47 pounds!! I lost a Snapple at security that I had forgotten about 🙁 The lady was really nice about it though and asked if I wanted to go chug it outside. I was full of coffee and water, so I passed.
Once at the airport, I wandered through the terminals for about an hour scouting out something to get for lunch. I wanted to see all of the options before I made a decision.
I found myself stuck in the middle of a British rugby team at one point and soaked up their cute accents.
And I put on a sample of Chanel Chance, which I used to wear until I used it up, and I am in smell heaven at the moment!
On my scouting trip I found $8-10 salads, apples, veggies, fruit cups, and bars. My goal was to minimize cost and maximize nutrition and satiety. I almost settled on a veggie container, an apple and a LaraBar I had packed from home, but then I remembered the Cibo Express at the very top of the terminal from when I left on Thursday. I was excited to find salads there for less than $6!!! And yogurts!!!
I got a greek salad with feta, olives and veggies for $5.95 (it’s also bigger than some of the $10 options)
Although the lettuce on the bottom is a little sketchy…
They had Stonyfield fruit on the bottom and Fage. I decided on a 2% Fage with Peach on the side since I’d never had this kind before and I prefer plain yogurts to flavored.
And I added a little chocolate for fun. I thought I was getting dark, but it turned out I grabbed a milk 🙁
So here’s the lunch I intend to eat mid-flight (although I am still stuffed from breakfast at the moment!) By adding the yogurt I still ended up at $10, but at least it will be a tasty and nutritious $10 🙂
I am leaving quite the opposite as I came. I arrived feeling strong and tall and am leaving feeling rather bloated and tired. I did not do the best job taking care of myself this weekend!! Per usual, it could have been a lot worse, but still, excitement got priority over my innards and left me blah. Better luck next time.
Thank you again to my wonderful sponsors – Boca and Stonyfield – for the opportunity to experience this wonderful blog of a weekend. I couldn’t have come without them!
I have barely talked to Matt or my family this whole weekend!! I feel so out of it and forgot what its like to be at home. All this traveling is wearing me out! I have 7 full days at home and then I head up to Baltimore to visit my grandparents. Then I turn around and fly to Boston for the Summit!! Better rest up so I’m 100% rejuvenated for that 🙂

I absolutely LOVE Fage 2% with side fruit! It’s like a dessert. If you ever have the side cherries, crumble graham crackers, then put the yogurt + cherries on top — it’s like cheesecake! And the side peaches with graham or granola is like peach cobbler, YUM!

Definitely seems like you’ve been doing a lot of travelling lately! Hopefully this week will give you a chance to refuel. 5.6 miles sounds glorious though! 🙂
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
thank goodness for instant oatmeal pax!
Emily says
While traveling recently, I kind of enjoyed the challenge of tracking down healthy, yet affordable options! You did great!! 🙂
MarathonVal says
I’m so glad you enjoyed the bites/bars/brownies (not sure what to call these?)
So you decided against the kalamata olive and bacon-flavored chocolate treats at Vosges Chocolate at O’Hare? I guess that will have to wait until your next trip 😉
Jess says
Looks like a great time this morning with lots of healthy options! 🙂
Christie @ Quit Your Diet says
I have never seen those Fage 2% with fruit on the side, I can only ever find the full fat ones. Out of the 0%, 2% and Total, I prefer the 2% and would love to have the convenience of the fruit being on the side like that.
Vince says
Have a safe trip and rest up once you get home. Back to back weekends of travel can really exhaust you.

I love the Fage with fruit – it’s so yummy The fruit on the side is nice because you can control how much you want in your yogurt.

AH those SOBE drinks are one of my bad habits. That and Vitamin Water 10. I’m trying to wean myself off of these things…
Anyway, it’s interesting to see your food choices while traveling. You manage to find healthy balance in lots of difficult places! Great motivation for the rest of us!

Looks like you had a great time at the convention. The salad looks much better than some I’ve seen at the airport. Hope you have a good flight.

Thanks for sharing the conference with us!! It looked really entertaining and educational. I’m new to blogging, but I think you’ve inspired me to try to attend next year.
Get some rest when you get home- traveling can take so much out of you!
Good job with lunch!!

Hi Kath – ive read your blog for over 6 months and this is the first time ive ever posted – on this blog or anyone elses! I just had to though because I was so moved by your experience at BLOGHER. Although yours was the first food blog i ever read after getting into it I also began to enjoy other food blogs – and then, pretty soon afterwards, STOPPED (enjoying other food blogs!). Why?? Because as soon as the whole Amazing Grass thing kicked off the other blogs just turned into 24/7 advertisements and everything I really dislike about what America seems to have become. It was ridiculous – and it also made me realise that these other blogs never seemed to give a negative review about anything – which essentially makes the term ‘review’ just totally redundant (im really sorry if this is starting to sound nasty – i dont mean to be so negative, it just really made me mad because it felt like these bloggers were totally compromising their readers – who essentially made thier blog! – for the sake of a few bucks or a good ‘reputation’ among manufacturors to get other free stuff!). HOWEVER the thing that really stuck out to me was that KERF wasnt (isnt!) like that! yes you review products, but you give negative reviews youre extremely honest and i feel like your exceptional intelligence (and integrity!) shines through in your product reviews, as well as every other area of your blog. SO, to cut a long story short, I am clearly someone who doesnt have endless patience with product reviews, has no time for fakers but really thinks your blog is brilliant and that no-one should -for one minute- doubt the good you do. There is not a mini-speck of cheapness on KERF!! have a safe journey back! kindest regards, emmy.

It sounds like a fabulous — albeit exhausting — weekend. Traveling can be tough; living out of a suitcase for a number of days, not being able to fully plan all meals, trying to fit in physical activity when you can… it can really wear on you! I manage a group of health coaches (having been a health coach previously) and frequent travel is one of our biggest challenges with clients.
Thanks for keeping us all updated, though. Hope you relax over the next week!
xoxo

I love your honesty about going into the trip feeling great and coming out feeling blah. Sometimes vacations just aren’t as refreshing as home. Enjoy being back with your hubby!

I really loved the trip report you did each day. I have known about BlogHer for awhile, even joined about two years ago but never did anything with it. This year it seems all the blog world is really into the convention so I thought it was great to read more about it.
Thanks for sharing!

I hope you get some rest so you don’t run yourself ragged! Sounds like an amazing trip though 🙂 Oh and I’m glad you were able to find a cheaper salad haha 🙂

you always do such a great job of eating well while traveling and not spending a ton while doing it either!

Oh yum…fage 2% is my favorite. I’ve yet to try it with the peach built in, but fage never fails to amaze my tastebuds. 😀
Can’t wait to hear all about the Healthy Living Summit…sounds like a blast! 😀

After all that fun and food, what is for dinner tonight?
Hangry Pants says
If you have the other SoBe waters, try to mix them with water. I did not like that flavor at all, but the others are not bad if you water them down.
Ashley [ota.bars] says
I loved following your adventures in blogland this weekend. Your breakfast in a cup this morning sounded yummy!! I think an ota.bar would have gone well in there 😉 See ya this week!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
Wow, I’m so jealous of the British rugby team. I would have asked to tag along as a cheerleader. 😉
Definitely a delicious airport lunch. I have to admit that I prefer the plain fage to the peach, but a little flavor is always nice.
Amy says
Ditto to Emmy’s comment about product reviews!
Your honesty (especially in the case of not-so-great products that you test/taste) definitely makes your reviews different from some others / much less advertising-esque.
Stephanie says
I enjoyed reading your recap of the conference!
I also found your comments and the discussion you started on product reviews on blogs interesting. Honestly, I have never thought about it that much. Maybe because we are SO inundated with that kind of thing all the time, that from a strictly reader perspective (I don’t have a blog), I just sort of ignore/take reviews with a grain of salt. It’s the same with product placement in movies– just because I see my favorite actress chewing a certain type of gum or using a particular brand of laundry detergent doesn’t make me run out and buy it. I guess I read most food blogs just to pick up on general healthy tips, interesting food ideas and receipes, and that kind of thing.
Hmn. That was sort of an impulsive and not well thought out comment, but just my initial thoughts. I’ll be interested to see how the discussion and debate continues!

I wanted to finally post-I love your blog!!
I hate Starbucks coffee from Starbucks too! But I always like it when restaurants make it, or in hotels!! lol I think they just burn the crap out of it.
Glad you had a good conference!

Hey Kath,
Thanks for all the information from the BlogHer conference. I have a quick question: what’s your favorite kind of granola?
Adi (oatonomy.com) says
The rugby team looks good — but your dinner looks better!! 🙂
Kath says
caloriesdonthavefangs ,
It’s a tie between my Maple Pecan (https://www.katheats.com/favorite-foods/maple-pecan-granola/) and Zoe’s Granola, which I tried just recently and absolutely loved.

I love Peach Fage but I try not to eat it too often because it’s too sugary! Glad you found a great lunch salad!
Katie Davis says
Kath,
I too was traveling through airports today. My husband and I were on our way home from a week long trip in Michigan with my in-laws. While we were away I must admit that I might have gone a bit haywire on the food intake, they eat out a lot!!! I love eating out, but after all of that and a stressful last couple of weeks I have noticed that a couple pairs of my pants have gotten tight!! I used to be a calorie counter like yourself and it is times like this when I often feel the draw to go back to that simply because I am feeling a bit out of control. My husband does not like me to complain about it, because he thinks it is silly to constantly talk about. Anywho, my question is how to you handle those feelings of discouragement or failure after you have been so successful? And is calorie counting something to return to or is it better to go back to normal eating, but be a bit more aware of what I am eating?

Very important question re: yogurt and planes.
I have noticed that you’ve taken a 5 oz. yogurt on almost every flight lately. How do you manage to get them through security without getting them confiscated? I thought they were subject to the 3 oz. rule. I would *love* to be able to bring yogurt on flights.
Kath says
Lisa,
Yogurt is not a liquid or a gel, so I haven’t had trouble with it. It probably depends on the airport.
Kath
Lisa says
Hm, I guess it must depend. The TSA rules would seem to restrict it (no creamy dips or spreads), so I’ve never even tried. Good for you getting it through!
