I’m doing well on my schedule today! Up at 5:30, caught up on blog and email, study, breakfast with the husband at 6:45, memorized 200+ medical terms (I’m a flashcard whiz :mr green: ), now I’m blogging, folding laundry and then off to the gym.
I had Bear Naked High Sierra Trail mix in my oatmeal today with half a small banana, flax and almond butter and made with half hemp milk, half water. I think the half hemp is just the same tasting as the 1/4 hemp, so I’ll stick to that combo from now on I think!
With tea with skim –
Breakfast today was about 495 kcal, 10 grams fiber, and 16 grams protein.

B_Hlthy shared with me a new breakfast version of my pumpkin cake.
She microwaved the egg whites and pumpkin with cinnamon and some sweetener for about 2.5 minutes. While it was cooking, she sliced banana, spread with peanut butter and mixed it all together with some Kashi H2H. Then warmed it all up for another 30 seconds! Yum!
Nutritional estimate is about 370 kcal. She also reports that tried the mixture with pre-cooked steel cut oats and it was also mighty delicious!
Thanks for sharing, B_Hlthy!

Oooh, that trail mix looks great. I tend to throw together my own trail mixes using items from the bulk section b/c I don’t like preservatives, but this one looks great. What a yummy breakfast. I’ll have to look for the Bear Naked mix next time I got to the store! 🙂

Alicia says
Breakfast ‘goo’
1 c Fage 0% Greek Yogurt
1/4 c canned pumpkin
1 tbsp organic nut butter of your choice
1/4c oat (raw)
Approx 320 kcals, without sweetener
Combine all ingredients. A la Kath, I generously sprinkle cinnamon, a little vanilla, and a drop of grade b organic maple syrup for sweetness. Enjoy!
Hint: If you prepare this ahead of time and let it hang out in the refrigerator, the oats soften a little. I like the texture of raw oats, though.

What are the nutritional benefits of soy milk vs. hempmilk? I haven’t tried hempmilk yet, but I always enjoy soy milk as a non-dairy option.

Hey Kath and everyone!
I found the website www.podfitness.com in Self this month, and I tried it out. Oh my gosh you guys, it’s the best thing ever!! It’s basically this program that mixes your workout playlist with a workout program designed by a trainer. So you’re listening to your ipod on the treadmill, and all of the sudden, the music turns down slightly, and a trainer gets on and tells you to up your pace or resistance, or whatever. I was totally skeptical, but then I tried it. It totally took my workouts to a whole new level! Some of the hardest workouts I’ve had in months! Kath, I definitely recommend you try it, and everyone else too! I’d love to hear what you guys think and hope you love it as much as I do!!
ps – sorry to sound like an infomercial! 😛

Natalie,
Flashcards are the ONLY way I can memorize things! I actually take my notes on 3 x 5 cards for all my classes. That way when it’s time to study I have each topic on its own card (or 2) and can easily sort what I know and don’t know. Saves me hours of transposing notes onto cards. Medical Term. is pretty self explanatory – I just made old fashioned flash cards to memorize the terms. I always make little tricks in my head to help me remember things – some of them are quite dirty too! Whatever works!
BP,
Hemp milk is made from the hemp seed whereas soy milk is made from soy. From the hemp milk package:
Living Harvest Hempmilk is a delicious and nutty tasting non-dairy beverage that provides essential and balanced nutrition for the whole family. A fantastic alternative to soymilk and dairy, our Hempmilk is made from the protein-rich hem seed nut and has a naturally occurring well-balanced ratio of Omega-3 and Omega-6 Essential Fatty Acids. These are the “good fats” that help maintain a healthy heart, a sharp mind, a strong immune system, and glowing skin.
Do a Google search for the benefits of soy – both are great dairy-alternatives.
Katers,
I saw that in SELF too. It looks cool, but I don’t think it’s worth $20 per month 🙁
Sam,
The new Mocha Nectar bar is fabulous. I like the dark chocolate walnut and vanilla cashew a lot too (haven’t tried the others). I love all the chocolately Larabars but I think the coconut and pecan pie are my favorites. I like the apple pie too, but there are lots of flavors I have yet to try. I didn’t care much for the cashew cookie, which was the first one I tried, but maybe I should re-try it! As for the Zbar, I thought the chocolate was OK, but didn’t really like the texture of the graham. KIND bars are also great – I have yet to try one I don’t like.

Kiala says
The only way I can memorize anything is mnemonically…you know, in a song.
Is that…does that make me crazy? It does, doesn’t it?
Christin says
Anytime you re-write something you are trying to learn it helps with memorization, so whether it’s flashcards, or even just all in 1 notebook, it will help you retain the information better than if you just read it or speak it out loud. But Kiala, you aren’t crazy…necessarily, lol…the reason commercials use those annoying songs is because making up songs to remember something DOES work as well!
I memorized the states and capitals in a series of songs in like, 4th grade, and i can still remeber them!!
Anne says
Ha, Kiala, you should go into business writing songs about stuff people need to memorize for various classes! You could make a fortune. I suck at memorizing things for class, but I can remember like all the lyrics to every song on the radio for the past 10 years, ha! So weird.
Christin says
“Sacramento California, Phoenix Arizona, Santa Fe New Mexico, Austin Texas hmmm hmmmh hmmmh”
Christin says
Anne may be onto something Kiala, you could especially do that for Presidents, the periodic table of the elements, 3rd world countries, ways to eat oatmeal in the morning…

Hey everyone,
I’m wondering how many minutes it takes to cook a boiled egg? Also, please specify when the timing begins and when you put the egg in the water.
I asked this in a previous post, but I have lost it now :\
Thanks!
rhodeygirl says
lots of people boil eggs in different ways but a couple of the best ways in my opinion are:
1. put eggs in a pot of cold water (make sure water covers the egg completely) and set stovetop on high. when it boils set the timer for 6-7 minutes and your egg will be firm but not overcooked
2. put eggs in a pot of cold water (make sure water covers the egg completely) and set stovetop to high. when water boils cover pot, shut off stovetop, and set timer for 15 minutes.
good luck!
Katers says
Kath, you should at least try the free 10 day trial. It’s so cool.
Eliza, like Kath said it’s about $20 a month.

Ihave been making your pumpkin yogurt lately with about 85 g of the libby’s pumpkin. I have been refrigerating the rest of the can in a plastic container- how long could you store that for? (or have you stored it for?) It’s been about 4 days for mine so far (I have been having the yogurt as a snack only once in a while) but I am not sure how much longer it could go?
Thanks!
ariana says
i downloaded a bunch of workouts from itrain.com. they have a ton of different types of workouts. it helped me mix up my cardio routines.
Christin says
Julia,
Depending on how hard or soft you want your boiled eggs will determine the amount of time you should leave them in the boiling water.
Start offf by putting your eggs in a saucepan, and cover with cold water. Bring to a boil. For soft boiled eggs leave them in for about 5-6 minutes. for medium, leave them 7-8 minutes. For a hard boiled egg (my fave) leave them in 9 to 10 minutes.
Once I am finished boiling my eggs, I immediately run warm water in with the boiling water over the sink, and then slowly bring the water colder and colder…I run the eggs under cold water for about a minute…this ensures that the eggs stop cooking. Once the eggs have cooled, I store them in the fridge. 🙂
Christin says
Oh! i should clarify…I start the cooking times listed for soft medium and hard once the water is already boiling. also, cooling the eggs with the warm to cold water helps when trying to peel the shell away soon after you boil them.

Hi Kath,
I’m trying to lose a couple of pounds (only like 3) but really just want to tone up. I think I’m doing a good job on my diet, but am just curious as to how much you think I should be working out each day. I have been running 2 miles each day and then walking on a high incline on the treadmill for about 5 minutes. Then I do crunches and lunges (3 sets of 20) with weights in hand. Is this too little? Anything else you would add?
NCCarter says
Hey everyone,
The podfitness comment made me want to ask: what are a few of your favorite songs to work out to? I’m bad about changing up my playlists on my ipod and I get tired of the same stuff. Sometimes I just hit “shuffle”, but then a random Wiggles song that I have on there for my daughter will come on….not exactly what I want to burn calories to. 🙂 I’m kind of a pop junkie when it comes to my workout mixes.

i am making brussel sprouts for the first time tonight. anyone have any suggestions on how to prepare them?
BethEllis says
I like running to “Suddenly I See” by KT Tunstall, Fergie and for some reason I really like “There’s Gotta Be More to Life” by Stacie Orrico (old!).
Betsy says
Brooke
I like to quarter them first, them saute them in a little olive oil, along with a salt and pepper. I think letting them brown for a few minutes so the outside is kind of charred is really nice. I don’t cook them for very long though, maybe 5 minutes, cause I like them still slightly crispy.
NCCarter says
Brooke – I always just toss brussels sprouts in a little olive oil, kosher salt, and pepper, and then roast at 400 for about 30 or 40 minutes. I pretty much stole that from Ina Garten, but I think it’s a very popular method. They are SO good that way!
Christin says
NCCarter,
I am a bit of a music junkie, in fact, my house looks like the friggin Wherehouse between me and my husband’s CD’s…here are some of my favorite workout jams, just off the top of my head:
Michael Jackson “The way you make me feel”
Timbaland/Justin Timberlake “Release”
Timbaland “The way I are”
Darude “Sandstorm”
Janet Jackson “Feedback”
Collective Soul “The world I Know”
Eric Johnson “Cliffs of Dover”
Chris Brown “Nice”
Pretty much any Paul Oakenfold mixes
Sara Bareilles “Love Song”
Alicia Keyes “No One”
Natasha Bedingfield “unwritten”
Red Hot Chilli Peppers “Give it away”
Vertical Horizon “Everything you want”
I could keep going but you get the idea….
Kiala says
I like to work out to Belle and Sebastian, Ben Kweller, Guided By Voices, The Jam, Rocky Votolato, and Ice Cube.
Because I am AWESOME.
Maran says
NCCarter- A few of my favorite running songs are … “Gotta get through this” by Daniel Beddingfield (for those days you just can’t get going), “Dance Floor Athem” by Good Charlotte and then any Killers, Fergie, Justin Timberlake or good old fashioned Nsync makes me move!

I have a wonderful schedule right now with class, work, workouts, and it is such that it allows for me to get 10, sometimes 11 hours of sleep! Which I love, and of course there are are those paper nights when sleep is drastically cut down to about 3 hours 🙂 Anyway, because sleeping for 10 hours then means I’m only awake for 14, does this lower how many calories I need in a day? I know that not getting ENOUGH sleep can stall weightloss, but what about if one is truly getting loads of sleep….it seems like I should be compensating with less calories? Thanks!

Taking Care of Business always gets me going for some reason. (weird, I know)
old Britney Spears (embarrassing again).

Amandamoo says
Rhodeygirl-
I do the same thing with my pumpkin and it seems to stay fresh for about a week and a half. After that, the juice separates from the meat of the squash and it starts to get a spoiled smell. I would say about 10 days.
Tips: if I’m having trouble getting through a can in that amount of time, I add a spoonful to my oatmeal or oatmeal pancake in the morning in addition to having it in yogurt as a snack. Also, Kath has a pumpkin pie cake recipe that’s great as a desert or snack. If I don’t finish my pumpkin in a week and a half, I feed it to the dog. Pumpkin is great for dogs and he doesn’t seem to mind that the juices are separated : )

rhodeygirl and Christin- thank you very much for your helpful instructions to hard boil eggs! I am going to try it out now!

Hi Kath-
I’ve been reading your blog for a few months now but haven’t posted yet. GREAT job though, keep up the good work! Along with the endless variety in your meals and informative explanations, I really admire your attitude toward healthy living in general, finding a balance between eating for nourishment and enjoyment, along with staying active as a student. Thanks for the inspiration!
I was wondering, however, if you could give me some advice. Have you ever met people who are simply “not that hungry” – but ALL the time it seems like?? I always get so frustrated when I am around someone like this…for example, my younger sister is about 5’3″ and 110 pounds, and I am 5’7″ 125 pounds. Our family has always been very health oriented and luckily both of us got great genes from our parents regarding weight. But whenever we spend time together, she is practically never hungry! She will snack here or there, but sometimes it’ll be 1 p.m. (and I’ve already had solid breakfast at 9ish, whereas she got up at 10:30 a.m.!) and I ask her about lunch, to which she replies “I’m not that hungry.”
For another example – I read somewhere that Jessica Alba pre-pregnancy only ate a large breakfast and then salad for dinner, nothing during the day because, she said, she is not usually an incredibly hungry person. I know that people have different requirements based on height and weight, and different eating preferences, but it always confuses me when some people claim they just aren’t that hungry…on a regular basis. I understand having days when you are less hungry than others…but is this confusing to you as well? Any thoughts on why this might be, or how to respond to such people?
I apologize for the long post!! This has been driving me nuts for a while now though, I would appreciate reading anyone’s responses, especially you Kath.
Thanks 🙂

Great job on the study tricks/catching up! I do the exact same thing. My workout mix is scaring me. 🙂 uh oh, cheesy alert, a little retro/old-school on the ipod menu, we’ve got Jamiroquoi (of Napoleon Dynamite dance sequence fame, makes me smile, Madonna Ray of Light, Janet Jackson, Justin Timberlake, Lenny Kravitz, Frou Frou, REM, Deee-Lite, Duran Duran, Groove Armada, The Roots (not in that order). I don’t run so it’s probably slower than the stuff other folks have listed. I learn my band tunes (I’m a weekend wedding/function singer!) while on treadmill as well.
Christin says
Definitely, Julia! 🙂 Yeah if you liked “The way i are” I would definitely recommend Paul Oakenfold to you…try “Greatest hits and remixes” it has songs like “Starry Eyed surprise” (you know, like from the roller skating coca cola commercials?)and remixes of artists like Justin Timberlake, Smashing Pumpkins, Dirty vegas, U2, etc…great variety and all workout-paced!

A question for anyone who has done this as well…ruined their day, or so they felt!
This morning I started off my day with my usual bfast of pb toast n banana and was hungry around 10 30 so i had 1/4 cup cereal…
Came home to make lunch and saw the container of ‘puppy chow’ (chex cereal, chocolate, peanut butter, and powered sugar creation) in my frig and tried some and ended up eating the rest of the container! Like 3 cups for 220 cals per 1/2 cup! I felt full and like I ruined my whole day downing those 1200 calories like that!
I don’t plan to exercise today because it’s my off day and have eaten the other meals normally even though I’m full and frustrated with myself but what do yall do when yall do something like that? or has anyone had this happen to them?
Christin says
right on Kim, Lol! I loved that dance sequence in Napoleon Dynamite! hehe I sing too, but in a rock band…how fun to sing at weddings!
Julia says
chocolatelover- I think that situation has probably happened to most of us. I find the only thing to do it wait it out…and pick yourself back up tomorrow and start fresh again. That is all you can do really! I try to just get right back into my normal routine and after a day things are back on track. Try not to get down about it!
Christin says
Chocolate lover,
I totally do that with Thin Mint Girlscout cookies!!! What I find works for me is I separate out appropriate portions in little baggies…then when I want cookies I take just one bag out and eat it in a different room from the kitchen…that way I really have the opportunity to stop and think before I go back for a second bag…it’s much easier to say no to extras, and to know when to stop when I set out the portions beforehand!
Christin says
Laura you just totally reminded me of a bunch of songs I need to put on my ipod, thanks! 🙂
Carrie H says
Chocolatelover,
I have to say yes, this kind of thing has happened to me, too. Usually with cereal or chips … So I try not to have this stuff around.
While I am embarrassed to admit it, I was struck by your honesty and willingness to post your experience, so I thought I’d say thanks.
I guess what I do on days like that is try to get over it and not let it totally derail my day. But, if I have an experience like that and it is, say, my normal lunch or dinner time, I will probably skip that meal and try to return to normal with a healthy snack *apple, yogurt* and a healthy, smaller dinner later.
I understand the feelings of guilt and, though it may sound dramatic, remorse.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It is nice to know I am not alone, though through overall healthy eating, I (hope I am!) well on my way to breaking that kind of cycle.

does that mean you like indie stuff AND backstreet boys? cause, i try to be all cool and into hip, new bands, but deep down, enjoy a little late-90s pop awesomeness of my high school days.
Kim says
Christin: that’s so great that you sing in a rock band. 🙂 Have you ever gone onto the online karoeke websites? That’s a howl? CHOCOLATE LOVER: Your experience hits home for me too. I’m trying to have more balance re: eating. I’ve binged/usually as a result of skipping an earlier meal/or just not listening to my real hunger signals, not eating mindfully. What’s helped me is to just let it go. Please don’t beat yourself up. I’m sure you’re a good, lovely person and tomorrow is always another chance for a fresh start. Life’s too short to feel bad. Let it go. Sometimes keeping a food journal to write down what you ate, how you felt etc. might help. you might see a pattern of when this happens. I am trying to lose weight. Have lost 10 so far. 25 more to go! Slowly but surely. I still have chocolate (or other treats in very moderate amounts) a couple days a week so I don’t feel deprived/set myself up for a binge.
Christin says
Nope kim, Never have…they sound fun tho! 🙂

jules: i read that article about jessica alba, too! you’re right about people having different metabolisms. also, people tend to eat the bulk of their calories at different times (i eat light during the day, saving most of mine for night, etc). another thing is, when someone trains their body to rely on so little, the body adjusts and naturally comes to expect that little amount (i did this when i went anorexic*shudder*). they REALLY aren’t hungry b/c of this and the body reverts to “storage mode” where most food consumed is turned into fat (why they suggest eating regularly). another thing i have found (b/c some of my friends eat like a banana for breakfast and nothing until dinner! and then they nibble on a salad!) is that people often lie about their eating habits. that want to appear in control and not a slave to their hunger (“oh i’m not very hungry”). you can’t follow someone else’s eating the entire day (unless they have a blog -_^) and they may stuff themselves at one point. this was true w/a friend of mine who was a closet binger…another possibility (sorry but the list is long!^_^) is that they are eating higher calorie foods. i eat pretty raw and healthy, usually have large meals spread throughout the day, but my little sister eats “like a bird” but has more fat than me. her typical day goes like this: bowl of sugary cereal and whole milk, sandwich with full-fat mayo and chips, hot chocolate (ovaltine and whole milk) when we get home from school, and usually just a bite of whatever we have for dinner. she does a good job not depriving herself (eats milkshakes and icees 24/7) but not as balanced as me so she can’t eat the VOLUME that i can. do you see what i’m saying? sorry about the long post-hope it helps!!

BethEllis-
I have been doing morning workouts for about a year and a half now. I can tell so much difference in my mood and energy level. It does take some adjusting though, you will have to have an earlier bed time. When the alarm goes off I like to lie there for about 5 minutes and start by wiggling my toes and fingers and then slowly moving other parts of my body…I know, it sounds crazy but it really seems to wake me up. At the end of the day I am so glad that I have already fit my workout in and dont have to squeeze it in to my schedule.
Alison says
Chocolatelover, I have so been there! I definitely have days where I have a healthy breakfast and lunch but then there are cookies in the office and I eat a couple and then think the whole day is shot so I eat a bigger than usual afternoon snack and dinner and dessert too! I am trying to not have these kind of feelings and sometimes I think I binge on foods because I’m eating too little the rest of the time so I’m trying to be more balanced. I think all the other commenters are right that it’s best to just get back on track as soon as possible and not feel guilty- easier said than done for me but I’m working on it!
BethEllis says
Thank you Sunsparklejl!! I just started working out in the morning a few weeks ago, so I think I’m definitely still adjusting. I do LOVE getting it out of the way though so I don’t have to back out of plans at night because I have to make the gym.
CHOCOLATELOVER: Don’t let your big snack this afternoon get you down but DO remember how it made you feel so that you think twice before bingeing again. It happens to everyone though, so don’t beat yourself up about it. When I know I’ve eaten a lot of junk it usually makes me feel better to just get on the treadmill and do a really light walk. I might not sweat or push myself like I do for a regular workout, but just being active in some way tends to help. If you want to stay out of the gym then do something else that’s nice for yourself like painting your nails or taking a long bath – just something to make yourself feel better. I have no doubt that you’ll wake up tomorrow with a fresh perspective!
Kath says
rhodeygirl,
I usually eat my pumpkin within a week, but I would just use the smell test on that one 🙂 Amandamoo gave a good response – about 10 days before it breaks down and gets gross.
BethEllis,
It’s really impossible for me to know what a good amount of workout is for you, but it sounds like you’re on the right track. The AHA recommends 30-60 minutes of exercise daily, 60-90 for those losing weight or who are maintaining weight loss, so as long as you’re meeting those, you’re doing great. What’s most important is that you’re eating as clean as possible while challenging your body but listening to it when you need a break.
Brooke,
We quarter brussels sprouts and roast them until they char. They’re great with just a bit of Parmesan. You could also brush them with honey for a sweet caramelized flavor!
Lily,
I’m not really sure about the sleep vs. RMR but did learn in physiology that your body needs the least amount of energy when sleeping (kind of a ‘duh’ I guess!). I think you could just put your stats into a calorie maintenance calculator and use sedentary as your option – unless when you are awake you’re bopping all over the place! But I don’t think the calorie difference between a sedentary person awake for more hours and a sleeping person would be that much. Just my opinion though.
BethEllis again,
Check the FAQ – I have some tips for getting up early in there!
Jules,
Thanks so much for your nice comments! I’ve met people who aren’t hungry much and I think the bottom line is just everyone is different! I do think that hunger is very much influenced by activity (are you bored or mentally engaged?) and habit (do you have a habit of snacking every 2 hours or eating 3 meals?). But I think “to each her own” applies here.
chocolatelover,
The others gave great advice, but please know that we’ve all been there! And when I first read your post, I thought to myself “Well if there was puppy chow in my fridge right now I would eat it too!” I am a HUGE believer of not having things like that in the house. I think willpower is greatly overrated and you must take steps to make it easy for you to be as healthy as possible. I realize that those with kids and families needs some of that stuff on hand, but within reason – the kids don’t need it that often either!
Emma ,
If I knew the solubility rules I might, but we haven’t gotten there yet!!
