I’m doing things in a weird order today: I just took a shower and in a bit, I’m headed to the gym!! We’re giving a tour of Great Harvest to a group of preschoolers today and I have to be there right when it starts. Since I haven’t lifted weights in a week, I hated to miss Pump, so I decided since I barely break a sweat in Pump I’d just shower first, exercise second! At least I’ll have clean sweat for the tour : )
Cereal for a quick breakfast!
This box fits the bill
I look for cereals with less than 150 calories a cup (although sometimes I do get the denser ones and use less), less than 5 grams of sugar (this one’s just on the cusp!) and 3+ grams of protein. Fiber is a nice plus, but cereals with more than a few grams scare my GI tract. I wouldn’t call this cereal the healthiest on the block, but for a honey bunches of oats craving, it works.
These took me right back to childhood!
Filled with blueberries, banana, chia seeds and milk. Plus a scoop of Sunbutter!
I think I have a touch of a cold. It’s all in my nose, but that might explain the lackluster yesterday. Hoping it’s on the mend.
Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot says
Those flakes remind me of Frosted Flakes! I miss those sometimes 🙂 Happy Friday, Kath!
K says
Kath, do you look at sodium content when you’re evaluating cereals?
KathEats says
Not at all. I don’t have any reason to restrict sodium
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
I think it is so awesome that you are giving tours to school children! They do that at some food store chains up here and it is a great way for kids to get some healthy information! 🙂 Have fun!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Have fun with the kiddies today! I loved fieldtrips as a kid, although we never got to go to a bakery. I think I would have been in my element though, because until the age of about 8, I wanted to be a baker “when I grew up”! Get some vitamin C in you and I hope you feel better soon! 🙂
mel says
That bowl looks delicious, but I need more protein to fill me up!! I love putting a scoop of vanilla protein powder into the cereal bowl!
KhushbOo says
What a fun field trip for the kids- I bet they’ll love the animal-shaped breads!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
those seem to be just like honey bunches of oats! yum! 🙂 i love the little oat clusters in them. your polka dotted bowl is so cute!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Ahhh you’re making me miss cereal! I’ve looked at some gluten free ones, but they’re all pretty high calorie. Other than plain rice Chex… but those are a bit boring.
Jana @ Newly Wife Healthy Life says
I have tried that cereal before and it is so good! I have never compared the nutritional stats to real honey bunches of oats though. Not sure if it’s healthier, or just seems that way since the word ‘organic’ is on the box.. 🙂
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
Have fun with the preschoolers and at the gym. Hope the cold passes quickly!
Of course breakfast is always more fun when you can have a pretty bouquet of flowers to look at.
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
honey bunches of oats has to be one of my top 3 all time favorite cereals. nice to know there is a health(ier) alternative! happy friday, kath!
Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach says
That looks like a delicious bowl of cereal! I’m not a huge cereal person, but I used to LOVE honey bunches of oats. Problem was I’d eat a half a box at a time! Clearly not a problem when you add all the berries, chia, banana, and sun butter! Looks soooo filling! Try some elderberry for the sniffles and feel better soon!
Allison K says
Your stuffy nose could also be pregnancy rhinitis
~Christy @ wonderofallthings says
Looks like a yummy breakfast. Sorry to hear you’re feeling a little crummy — might be airline crud (so easy to get a touch of something after a trip on a plane in my experience!). Hope you have a great day 🙂
Monique Gagnon says
I’m glad I’m not the only one who believes there is such a thing as “clean” sweat. Sometimes if I know I want to work out in the morning, but I don’t have enough time to shower, I’ll do a full shower and shave the night before and a quick “rinse” shower after my workout if I need one.
Jacqueline@digintobooks says
I have the same bowls as you! Love them!! The flowers and cereal look like a cheery way to start the day.
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
LOVE that polka dot bowl 🙂
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I love that bowl – similar to a Martha Stewart dessert set I got at my bridal shower.
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I’m amazing that the sugar is only 5g with “Honey” in the title! Sometimes it’s hard to find cereals with less than 5g that aren’t supposed to be honey-flavored!
Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot says
You just gave me a great big craving for cereal 😉 Have fun with the tour!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I love that bowl! It’s super cute! The tour with the preschoolers sounds like it’s going to be fun! Little kids are so cute 🙂
Cait's Plate says
It’s tough to beat a big old bowl of cereal with a spoonful of nut butter 🙂
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
Have fun with the preschoolers! While I couldn’t teach them all the time, I had so much fun when I used to sub for preschool in the summer. They said the craziest things!
Rachel says
The nose issue might be here to stay until delivery. I had a stuffy/runny nose for my first pregnancy and this one seems to be following suit.
I’m not sure if it’s better to wish yours was just a small cold or not. :/
Angel7 says
I hope you start to feel better soon, Kath! Maybe whatever you have in your nose is from the dry weather in San Diego or something.

Hilliary @Happily Ever Healthy says
Have fun on your bakery tour!
Jasper Naomi @ crunchylittlebites says
sometimes I shower before a run to the office..hehe…then I change once I am there and it’s almost like I took a shower after the run…btu not, really 😀
Sarah@The Flying ONION says
I have that same bowl! I love how bright and sunny and cheerful it is. 😀
I’ll have to check out this cereal next time! I love honey bunches of oats but haven’t had it in ages because it would never keep me full these days. This one would fit the bill. 😀
Lauren @ Lawfully Wedded Wife says
I used to love honey bunches of oats as a kid! I’m a little crazy about hating my cereal soggy though, and that kind gets soggy FAST, so I can remember pouring milk in the bowl and then RACING to finish the flakes before they got soft on me! Haha! Have fun with the tour!
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
I can still remember a field trip when I was in grade school to the local bakery. It is no longer there but I can still remember it’s name, International Bakery, the smell of the freshly baked goodies, the layout and that honey dipped doughnut we got at the end of the tour! I am sure you will be creating some great memories for those children today!
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Hope you’re not coming down with something and if you are, that you’re able to take things a little easier today.
Happy Friday 🙂
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Sometimes my mom showers before she works out and I always thought that was so funny. It works for her, but I get wayyy too sweaty to do that 🙂 Aw, I bet the tour with the preschoolers will be a lot of fun! I love that polka dot bowl, btw – so cute.
Lisa @bitesforbabies says
Is there almond butter in there?!!
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
Barely break a sweat in pump?! Man, I sure do! I usually do a little cardio warm-up before, which might activate it a bit.. but still! Did you ever or are you being more conscious not to get your HR up too high now, hence no sweat?
My elbows are always dripping by the end of the squat track!
KathEats says
I’m really not much of a sweater 🙂 It takes a 90* day or hot yoga to really get me sweating – or a really fast running race. My elbows sweat in squats in the summer, but in the winter I’m in long sleeves and pants and often still cold! And I’m one of the heaviest weight users in the class, so I think I’m challenging myself 🙂 (Well not as much after pregnancy though)
Tiffany says
yum…Im craving cereal now! lol
I remember having field trips like that when i was a kid! So much fun!!
Which cereal do you think is the healthiest that fits your requirements and is still quite tasty?
Have a great day! 🙂
KathEats says
Hmmm. I can’t think of a single one – maybe plain shredded wheat (which is one of the denser ones) or plain bran flakes or Cheerios
j3nn says
A crisp bowl of cereal with cold milk sounds SO GOOD!
Andrea says
Out of pure curiosity, how many calories do you try to consume at breakfast?
KathEats says
I don’t count them, but they average 400-600
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Have FUN at PUMP!! Wahoo. Lifting weights is the jam!
Pretty cereal pics with blubes today-love it.
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
I’ve never seen someone who can jazz up cereal like you, Kath!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
YUM!!! TJ’s has a cereal like that and I’m addicted!
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
I hope you have a great day and don’t overwork your body! 🙂 And I’m loving the mason jars!!!! I’m doing that as a centerpiece for my wedding reception, except with candles inside. 😀 And it’s awesome when foods take you back to childhood! Awesome feeling.
britt says
your cereal makes my morning cereal look so boring. i just do bran flakes and milk. but i love simple sometimes.
Cary says
Thanks for the tip about cereal nutrition and what to look for. I love learning things like that to help me become a more savvy, healthy shopper.
JessicaE says
I have had a stuffy dry nose for weeks now. There is even a name for it: rhinitis of pregnancy. hang in there.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
You’re so good with sticking to healthy cereals! I know Kashi isn’t the healthiest brand of cereal out there, but I just can’t bring myself to stop buying it – it’s just too good! 😛
Marion says
Hopefully it’s not a cold and just pregnancy congestion! It’s a pretty common occurrence in pregnant women due to increased blood Volume!
Kelly Michele says
I’m just curious at your comment about cereals with more than a few grams of fiber scaring your GI tract. Is this a personal thing or is there a RD reason behind it? I was wondering because I usually go for the higher fiber cereals. Thanks! 🙂
KathEats says
This is personal opinion. I don’t think foods should have added fiber to them. I remember eating some wraps a long time ago that had something like 14 grams of fiber each (mostly from added plant-based fibers so they were claimed to be “natural” but that just doesn’t seem natural to me) so I decided a long time ago that added fibers, natural or not, were not real food. They are not the way nature intended. I don’t think they’ll hurt you (although I wouldn’t be surprised if they did upset stomachs] but I just choose not to buy products with added fibers.
[That’s not to say that everything I eat is nature’s choice, but this was an easy tweak to make when purchasing things to be more natural]
Kelly Michele says
Thank you so much for your input 🙂
Susan says
please…i go to spin in the morning and don’t shower b/c i don’t have time and go straight to work. i always make it a point to shower the night before, though…usually. 🙂
Alyssa says
Thank you for the info on your own cereal-purchasing nutritional guidelines! I have been wondering about this as I’ve looked for healthier cereals lately.
