Afternoon errands included picking up some house items. My sister got me an Anthro gift card for Christmas and I’ve been saving it for the perfect occasion!
Like when I bought a house that required some fancy hooks!
Bathroom décor –
Michael’s was also have a 50% off basket sale, so I went there for a few baskets for our new medicine cabinet closet
Project #3 was to refurbish my grandfather’s possessions box with a paper liner to turn into Matt’s cologne box
Matt came home bearing gifts of bread – and our new neighbors brought us this gift of SALT! Apparently it’s a traditional gift to give neighbors? Lucky me that salt is the flavor of the year!
Annddddddddddddd then we drank PUMKING!! LOOOOVE this beer! It’s my favorite pumpkin drink, although, it’s not so much a pumpkin beer. It’s more of a pumpkin beer-like drink. Shalafly is my favorite pumpkin beer. Tied with Matt’s Imperial Pumpkin homebrew. This is a very very close second though.
2010 vintage. Ever so good. Ever so butterberr-y!! If you have a specialty beer shop, go buy this beer now.
I made a simple dinner to go with –
Herby Chicken with Roasted Parsnips, Salad and Virginia Rolls
My mom makes a KILLER herb chicken, but the Organic Butcher makes one too – pre-marinated and reasonably priced and served in a vacuum pack. SO convenient and amazingly flavorful!!
I seared them in our Le Creuset pot and then baked them in the oven at 400* for about 20 minutes until the inner temp read 165* [note the FDA recommends 180* for food safety!]
The parsnips were from Tracy’s garden (Karen’s friend!) and they were fabulous roasted in EVOO and salt and peppa for about 30 minutes
Matt made the Virginia rolls – literally!
Pet peeve = my dinner roll getting mixed with salad dressing. Soggy bottom blues.
After dinner, I was totally peer pressured to walk to Beer Run for a night cap. It was only 7:45 and somebody wanted more beer-citement on a Saturday night. So of course it took very little convincing to get me to go : )
He got a barleywine and I sipped off of it but mostly drank some water. The Pumking was plenty strong for me and I had more than my share!
Sundays are SO EXCITING in this household! Can’t wait to sleep in!

Those are some great finds at Anthropologie and Michael’s! Can’t beat 50% off! 🙂 Looks like a great dinner!
Molly @ RDexposed says
Literally sent the boy a message asking if there was any pumking left from the beer fest after one look at the opening picture!! If I get a “no,” then I may be making a beer run, too!
Cait's Plate says
Knowing you can sleep in is seriously the best feeling ever.
Also the best thing ever? Your dinner. And pumpkin beer!! Even despite the soggy bottom blues, your dinner roll looks excellent.
Enjoy your “Friday” Kath, you definitely deserve it! 🙂

I adore your grandfather’s box. It’s gorgeous.

I thought bread and salt were traditional colonial housewarming gifts, however, it is actually said to be a Jewish tradition. A gift of a pineapple was a colonial housewarming gift. Maybe your pineapple is still coming? 🙂
Stef @ Living HI says
I am envying the fall weather (from Hawaii), but most of all the pumpkin beer! I WILL find pumpkin beer tonight somewhere on this island. Sadly, I doubt I will come across the Pumpking 🙁 I am enjoying fall weather vicariously through you and other mainland bloggers.
Casey @ oatsandnanners says
I totally raided Anthropologie’s sale section for some cute mix & match plates — you should check them out (I’m sure they’d photograph beautifully for you). I love that you’ve completely converted to pumpkin mode. I saw pumpkin spice bagels and pumpkin donut holes at my grocery store today…. FALL IS HERE, BABY! Hope you’re enjoying the weather!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
i’d like to use some pumking to make pumpkin bread!

I sleep in on Saturdays and that alone is probably why I love Saturdays so much. Sleeping in = priceless!*
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Kinda jealous of everyone sleeping in tomorrow and kicking myself for signing up for a 5K that starts at the crack of dawn. The wake up call is the worst part about races!

That is a cool idea for a cologne box!

Le Creuset pots are the best for roasting…they just make the food that much better!
And locally (home!) grown parsnips from a friends garden…oh, you lucky girl.
And I am not a beer fan but that pumpkin beer sounds so interesting.
And Michael’s…could get lost in that place for days!
Kate says
Mmm. I had my first Pumking of the year tonight too!! Even better than I remembered it.
When I bought it, the woman at the counter described it as “pumpkin pie, with crust, plus whipped cream!” We also got a 6-pack of O’Fallon Pumpkin Ale, which she described as “pumpkin pie, with crust, but WITHOUT whipped cream.”
I’d say they were pretty accurate descriptions! Tasted both tonight. Probably foolish to ever taste another pumpkin beer on the same night as Pumking. Nothing can compare to that deliciousness!
KathEats says
I don’t know if I’ve had the O’Fallon!?
Sana says
Mumm, those rolls look goood 🙂

I sure do miss Pumking beer!! Its my FAVORITE pumpkin beer! Guess I’m just gonna have to wait until next fall after butter bean arrives! 😀
Lauri (Redheadrecipes.com) says
Well… Butter bean will be here in April, but the beer won’t be out again until fall…
KathEats says
Buy one now and drink it in April!

You weren’t worried about poisoning from only getting to 165 then? I’ve never cooked it that way anyways – and wouldn’t know the difference unless the color and taste was off!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
I don’t like soggy bottom rolls either! Blech. But yay for pumpkin beer season! It’s about as close as I can get to fall out here in SoCal and I’ll take what I can get! Mmm!
Caitlin @ Cake with Love says
My chicken never looks that good! 🙁

Sundays are my day of ‘sleeping in’ and how I look forward to it each week! It’s already Sunday in Mumbai and it’s such a great feeling to just chill out in my pjs all morning and eat breakfast leisurely rather than go, go, go!
Emily @ the doodlebug says
I was JUST thinking to myself the same thing about Sundays!!! I won’t even set my alarm! Pancakes, coffee, maybe work out and some college football!
Jaclyn says
I really am not a big beer fan *shocker, I know!* but I bought a couple o pumpkin beers and I’m looking forward to trying them – pumpkin does no wrong 😛 !!
Hannah @ Good Now Day says
I’m a wine girl, but your enthusiasm for beer really makes me want to try some of our local specialities! Have a great Sunday!
Kim says
Pumpkin beer sounds good. Must try. How is Karen? She hasn’t been on the blog much lately. Does she like cville as much as you + Matt?
KathEats says
She is good! She’s visiting her family right now. Our new house is much father away than hers, so we haven’t seen her as much! She’s at the bakery all the time though 🙂 And her hair is back full force!
Jillian H says
I love Anthropologie!! Australia needs one!

Oh my, this post reminds me how much I love roasted parsnips! I have been neglecting them far too long…such an under appreciated root veggie!
Hope you have a lovely Sunday, Kath!

I love Pumking! I am obsessed with trying all of the fall beers and this one was my favorite so far. I really want to try the Southern Tier Creme Brulee next(even if it isn’t technically a fall beer)-have you tried it? Southern Tier rocks!
KathEats says
I have NOT and that is one beer I am dying to try too!
Nicole G says
I will let you know if I try it and be sure to post if you do =)
Laura says
I am OBSESSED with Pumking – it is by far the best of the pumpkin beers out there. Every year, I stock up so I have enough to get me through till the next fall when it comes back – this year, it came back and I had one bottle left from the year before. Success! My friends and I love Pumking so much that whenever someone says the word pumking, the automatic response (similar to when someone sneezes and you say “god bless you”) is: “Praise Puca.” (The pumpkin god featured on the bottle). Seriously, AMAZING.
Southern Tier’s Creme Brulee Stout is pretty awesome, and their Mokah Stout is great too. For a REALLY decadent dessert treat – pour equal parts Creme Brulee Stout and Mokah Stout into a glass. It’s seriously like an ice cream soda – SO GOOD! A bartender introduced me to that combo once when I couldn’t decide between the two.
KathEats says
Love it!
Mel says
I’ve said this before, but I LOVE all your antiques and design prowess! I’m looking forward to seeing more pictures of your new home! PS- I remember reading in one your sections that you don’t fold your clothes in your drawers. I stopped too and it’s been such a relief. They never stay folded anyhow!
KathEats says
Thanks!! I have lots of photos to share soon 🙂
Katie @ Plates and Paste says
Love the hooks! And your DIY cologne box project. Seems like a great gift idea too. I have some cigar boxe I need to fix up into something…
Sam says
My fiance and I just moved into our first home and my mom gave us the gift of salt, bread, and wine with a card that read “Bread- that this house may never know hunger; Salt- that life may always have flavor; Wine- that joy and prosperity may reign forever” It’s a tradition with many European cultures to give these things as housewarming gifts, but that quote is from “It’s a Wonderful Life” (one of my family’s favorite movies!). I think it is such a meaningful gift!
KathEats says
Oh fun! Thanks for the background
Kristina says
I used to live about a 20 minute walk away from Southern Tier brewing (unfortunately wasn’t old enough to partake at the time…)! Their Pumking is awesome and I’m glad to see their beer is so widely available — I thought it was just a western New York thing! :]
Brittany @ Eating Bird Food says
Ohh Pumking how I love thee! I haven’t had one yet this season but we have a few that we saved from last year as well. Better start drinking them soon. 🙂
Lara @TresLaLa says
We’re getting some new neighbors shortly (which is rather sad, because we love the family who is currently in the house… I’m definitely stealing the salt idea (potentially the bread & wine from above, too)!
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
I love, love, love that beer!!
I have a few more bottles of Pumkin Ale by Dogfish Head which I also recommend to anyone!
Cara says
Those parsnips look lovely. I am not sure I have ever eaten any. Looks tasty though.
