A simple morning because I did all of my packing yesterday.
Some writing. Some gymming. I did a real simple workout with Real Simple the magazine: just some ellipticalling plus biking to-and-fro. I was quite hungry when I returned!!
Sardine salad over garden greens with pumpkin seeds, High Fiver Fiber and Matt Cracks.
The sardine salad was made just like the video
And the bread drizzled with some local honey!
Real simple.
And with that, I am packing up my backpack (I chose comfort over style) and am headed to the Amtrak station! My first time on an Amtrak in the USA. I’m a little nervous!
Can’t wait to see EMILY and then all of YOU at Foodbuzz this weekend!! I have a weird mentality about trips. When I first sign up/book them I am super excited. But then as they loom, I start to dread the travel. I hate packing and getting dirty traveling. But then the moment arrives when it’s time to leave and suddenly I realize that I am going somewhere FUN and I get really excited.
That moment just hit!!!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
Ahh I’m so jealous you’re going to Foodbuzz! I so wanted to go but it was just going to be sooooo expensive. Have fun!!
Little Bookworm says
Hope you have fun at Foodbuzz!
Samantha @ Bikini Birthday says
Why do you get dirty when you travel?
Kath says
Germs, public bathrooms, etc.
Mom says
I was wondering about that too. It’s not like the old covered wagon or coal train days. Back then, I’ve read people really got dirty.
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
Have fun on the train 🙂
I dread trips right until the day I leave — the packing, the stress, the taking off of work, etc, feels like too much!
Amanda says
I look forward to trips in advance too. Once they actually approach I get worried. Then I enjoy the trip and can’t wait to get home. I’m totally a home-body!
Christine says
I feel the same way about traveling. It doesn’t help that I am the worlds worst packer (of the over-packing variety)
Melissa @ HerGreenLife says
I going to try making some Matt Cracks (even though that name just seems so wrong, somehow) this weekend, because I’ve really been craving a salty, crunchy snack in the afternoon. So far, I’ve avoided the temptation and packaging of buying store-bought, but I need to do something!
I have a similar love-hate relationship with travel. I like the idea but get pretty stressed leading up to the actual trip — and the expense can be stressful.
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
I love traveling, but I do understand your struggles. Love the salad!
Krystina says
Love the simple things. Safe travels. 🙂
Dee says
Enjoy! Have fun in SF! 🙂
Joanne says
Ha! So funny. I’m EXACTLY the same way. As the trip gets closer, I think about how much I don’t want to leave my dog and my daily routine.
As for getting dirty travelling, my biggest thing is putting my head on headrests that I just KNOW don’t get washed. It makes me really nervous. And now there’s all the stuff about
beg bugs?!!! Eeewwww!
Christin L. says
Have a great trip! I am excited about living vicariously through everyone’s posts! 🙂
Alina @ Duty Free Foodie says
My emotions go up and down before a trip as well. I think it doesn’t help that I procrastinate with packing etc. But I always enjoy the trip while I am on it!
rebecca lustig says
have a great and SAFE trip! cant wait to read about it 🙂
p.s. good call on the back pack. you wont regret it
suki @ [Super Duper Fantastic] says
hopefully i will run into you at foodbuzz this weekend! 🙂
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I’m so jealous that you’re going to Foodbuzz! I am definitely going to make it a priority next year. I’m the same way about you about dreading the packing as a trip draws closer, but I don’t think I’d feel that way about Foodbuzz. Have a safe trip and I can’t wait to read your conference posts!
Amanda (Eating Up) says
I have the same trip feelings as you! Although, preparing for them is a little bit exciting to me.
Sana says
You are going to love the backpack!!!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
Have a great trip!
Marisa @ Loser for Life says
have fun, Kath! Can’t wait to see your yummy pictures!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I love reading Real Simple while I workout…except that a lot of times, the recipes make me HUNGRY!!! 🙂
Heather says
I hate all the stress that comes with traveling. Can’t wait to hear of your adventures in San Francisco.
Safe travels!
Jessica says
I am the same way when it comes to traveling. I do not care to stay in hotels. The idea of trips are so much fun but then I think about where we will stay, eat, etc. I get creeped out. I know…I am weird.
Lily's Health Pad says
Ahhh. I HATE traveling too. I always get stressed about leaving my “home space.”
debi says
will you be having any reader meet ups with reading while in SF? i just happen to be visiting my sis in SF this weekend, random!
Hannah H. says
Hey Kath! I’d love to meet you and your blogging buddies, too. Can readers attend any FoodBuzz events?
Kath says
Sorry guys, the weekend is so busy I’m not putting energy into a separate meet up. However, we’re hanging out tomorrow afternoon and Friday morning, so if you’re free during the day, perhaps we could Tweet up?
Hannah H. says
That would be fun, keep us posted. Welcome to SF!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I am so the same way about traveling. When my kids were smaller, the stress was always about dealing with forgetting their things. I don’t know why I stressed so much about it since we could always just go to the store to get what they needed…I just hate having to go through trouble.
Lolly says
Are you taking Amtrak the WHOLE way??? or just to an airport???
Meghan Telpner says
There’s something amazing about freshly roasted pumpkin seeds early in November…
Camille says
Oh my gosh, are you taking Amtrak all the way to SF? I hope it’s just to an airport!
Tyla says
I think Real Simple is my favorite magazine!
Grocery Goddess Jen says
I used to take Amtrak all the time in college- Philly to Connecticut, Philly to Baltimore – you’ll be fine, it’s fun! Have a great time in San Fran.
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
Have fun at Foodbuzz!!! Say hello for me 😀
Your sardine salad looks yummy. I have a couple cans that I’ve been meaning to make ahead of time so it chills.

My statement du jour: Traveling is the best. Have a safe and fun trip!
Amanda says
I never travel without a package of baby wipes – perfect for wiping down all gross surfaces, seats, door knobs, etc., cleaning my hands, and using as toilet paper in a pinch.
Lindsay Perrone says
I don’t know how people eat those sardines.. blech!!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Woohoo!! I wish I was lucky enough to go to the Festival!! You’re going to have so much fun!!
Maren says
I feel the same way about trips. I always feel like I don’t really want to go right before it’s time to actually go.
Trish says
I’m glad I’m not the only RD going to Foodbuzz instead of FNCE :0 I hope to meet you this weekend!! Love your blog!
Kath says
🙂
Lynda says
I totally relate to that feeling you expressed about traveling or really anything I have planned. A friend called it “Antipcation Stress” and that kind of summed it up for and made me feel better knowing that other people experience it also. When the day actually arrives, like you said, it’s all good! Enjoy 🙂 Don’t get too dirty..LOL
Cathy B. @ Bright Bakes says
I totally get your “getting dirty while traveling thing”…I am not a germ-a-phobe by any means(I’m a country girl!!), but something about all the stale air, and people packed into tiny places, and yes, those restrooms, can really do me in! But in the end, it’s worth it! Traveling is pretty cool in general…have a lovely time…wish i could be there too!
love,
cathy b. @ brightbakes
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
Have fun on your travels! Cant wait to hear all about it!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says

Yummy salad!
I was curious as to what the ‘peaceful holidays’ channel on Pandora sounded like, so I checked it out. I’m loving it! It’s great to “ease into’ the Christmas season since it doesn’t have vocals.

Toast with honey is one of my favorite “non-dessert” desserts. It’s so satisfying and sweet, and perfect with any meal. Lovely choice : )
Hannah says
Yum! I was wondering, I know you love sardines and herrings, but have you tried canned mackeral? I just bought some myself and was wondering what you think 😀
Kath says
I have NOT yet tried mackeral, but if they’re similar I’m sure they’re good!
