This morning was rough. For some reason drinking water (or tea) when I have a hangover makes it worse. It’s like the water sits too heavy in my stomach and I get nauseous. So I drank water this morning and felt sick. Then peppermint tea because I think mint is supposed to settle stomachs? It did not. Then seltzer. No luck.
My sister and I both were g-chatting this morning about our hangovers. And about blogs. Listening to Pray For Daylight. And we both blew off our workouts. I just couldn’t muster the energy to go to yoga.
After spending an hour reading A Bowl Full Of Lemons, I finally did what any normal hungover person would do…
I mopped my floors.
Does that indicate how much I’m enjoying the Shark steam mop!?
Some of you commented that you should not put essential oils inside of the mop. I followed directions. Instead, I put a few drops onto the pad. I figured a few drops wouldn’t hurt, and it’s picking up dirt anyways.
The smell was subtle, but nice! Definitely left a nice linger in the air.
So did my pumpkin candle!
After mopping I dusted.
And since we are over 60 degrees outside, I decided I needed to get up and go for a walk.
But a walk turned into a RUN.
And a short run turned into 5.5 miles!
My nausea melted away, and I had one of the better runs I’ve been on this spring. Probably because I didn’t have Matt along with me to make me talk and get out of breath.
So so glad I went!!
The third and final custom spoon I got from Wooden Hive!
Very fitting, no?
I dunked it into a leftover soup + grits blend
Seasoned with goat cheese and smoked paprika!
For dessert, chocolate and strawberries. Justin’s Hazelnut (a gift from Miss Healthy Apple!)
A side of lemon sparkles
I think my hair is getting shorter…
Cait @ A Bicycle Built for Two says
Glad you’re feeling better! And I LOVE the new hair 🙂
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
We bought the Shark Vac Then Steam the other day! My mom likes it much more than the Mint. BB&B is a great store!!
Those strawberries with the Justin’s look so yummy.
I hate hangovers!! They are why I don’t drink anymore; I just can’t handle them. I don’t like tummy and head disturbances, I have enough already! lol
Deva (Voracious Vorilee) says
i hate hangovers. I process alcohol really quickly and dehydrate easily so I always feel hungover the night I was drinking AND the next morning. I try not to drink more than one or two at a time now. It’s better for my waistline, anyway 🙂
foodandfarm says
It is amaing how nothing, not even vitamin water will cure a hangover, but something as nautral as jogging will!!
katy says
I love the new haircut!!
bitt says
Ginger often helps my nausea, you could have it in tea.
I love that Justin’s Hazelnut butter. So good.
Stacy @ Every Little Thing says
I need to get that mop! and hangovers are the worst. i NEVER drink gatorade but sometimes that is the only thing that helps during a hangover!
Shannon @ My Place In The Race says
Glad your feeling a bit better! 😀 Water does the same thing to me when I’ve drank too much. It’s weird?
Bryce says
It saddens me that you make light of/ trivialize overindulging on alcohol to the point of wrecking your body.It makes me wonder if your RD training has been worth it and what sort of an example you are setting for your readers.
KathEats says
Do you think I intentionally drank too much?
mel says
I’m sure Kath didn’t have more than a few glasses of wine…RD’s so drink wine and have fun ya know? It’s not like she was at the bar all night taking vodka shots!! And who really cares that much
mel says
do* drink wine – sorry!! can’t spell today
Bryce says
Hi Kath,
Yes, that was my assumption, but your response hints otherwise. I was merely making the point, & allow me to rant please, that too often I see people being dismissive of the role they play in over indulging (which can lead to the culturally accepted “hangover”). Your blog is one that promotes healthy eating to many, many readers/ subscribers and I can recall you mentioning being hungover on more than one occasion. In my opinion, this amounts to condoning over drinking, not taking responsibility for ones own consumption etc.
regards, Bryce
Mary Frances says
Bryce, Maybe hangover does not mean the same thing to Kath as it does for you. MOST people associate a hangover as being unable to function, pounding headache, possible vomiting. Actually, have you ever had a hangover AND THEN cleaned your floors AND THEN gone for a fast and best five mile run in as many months? Maybe Kath’s definition of a hangover was she maybe had half a glass of wine too much, and didn’t spring right out of bed with a happy dance and a big smile. Some people, especially as we age, have difficultly getting up and getting going without any consumption of alcohol whatsoever and a Coconut water might help. Possibly, Kath should have just said she didn’t feel 100 percent this morning, felt thirsty and drank too many liquids after just waking up (which she never does)… Naaahhh, on second thought, I enjoyed reading her blog just the way she presented it and I thought it was just perfect. Furthermore, after reading her blog, my first impression was I want to feel good so if I do have wine that I want to be mindful of keeping it in moderation. I believe she presented a fine example this can happen. If this were a daily situation and she never got out of bed and just did her blog on a laptop in bed because of being hungover, people would probably not follow her blog. It’s my opinion that her audience is somewhat educated and interested in being healthy. Kath just went to a fun party. Thank you for expressing your opinion anyway, but I just don’t view Kath as being unresponsible.
Mary Frances says
whoops, that would be ‘irresponsible’.
Bryce says
Mary Francis,
Good on you for rightly being protective of Kath’s Blog. However, I stand by my statements. I do not wish to hijack these comments any further, but reiterate that societal acceptance of “overindulgence in alcohol” should not be condoned.
KathEats says
I most definitely do not support drinking to the point of negative effects and I most definitely wish I had had one less glass of wine last night! But sometimes we get carried away in the moment and don’t make wise choices. We all deal with that from time to time in some shape or form.
Bryce says
Respect.
Krissy - Shiawase Life says
As a reader, I have to say it’s better for a blogger to be upfront about their life and activities! No one is perfect and I’d prefer to read a REAL life rather than some idealized one.
Baking 'n' Books says
Why – can’t you see the joy in life and that all things should be in moderation! And life is to be enjoyed.
I guess then Oprah Winfrey, Joy Bauer and others are also poor role models?
I suggest the book “Live a Little” 🙂
Jules says
I love katheats, and it’s exactly because she doesn’t set out to set an example for her readers! She presents her life- or what parts of it she chooses to share- and it’s up to the reader to be inspired (as I frequently am). As someone pretty close to her age, I can relate to a night of 2-3 glasses of wine leaving you feeling less than stellar the next morning. She’s neither trivalizing nor making light of anything in this entry, just being realistic. If it bugs you, don’t read it!
kristinichole says
First time commenter here! I have had the urge to leave one before but I think it is finally time.
In response to the “example kath is setting for her readers” I will say she has inspired me daily to become a better eater. I am now eating more oatmeal for breakfast and have doubled the fruit in my diet. I am also signed up to join my hospital’s Wellness Center. I enjoy wine frequently and sometimes clean my house top to bottom to fight a hangover 🙂
Thanks for being real, Kath!

Thanks y’all!

Brice:
1. Why do you read this blog if she has “offended” you on multiple occasions by mentioning that she has had a drink or two? If it bothers you – read elsewhere!
2. I appreciate that you share that part of your life, Kath. Not that you owe anyone any explantions for any of your choices… but I apprecaite knowing that one can live a healthy life at a healthy weight and still enjoy a drink socially here and there.
melissa (fitnessnyc) says
That soup looks so so good!!! Glad the run detoxed you! I am actually considering getting The KERF, so I hope not too much shorter.
KathEats says
“The KERF” – ha!!

Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy says
Sometimes I’ll feel a little bit sick on the weekends or on holidays and then I work out and I feel fine afterward!
Did you freak out when you first washed your hair again? I got mine cut today so I’m sure I’ll be freaking out in the shower tomorrow!
Natalia - a side of simple says
Strawberries and chocolate sound like great additions to the hangover cure 😉 I know I’m a bit late on it but love the haircut!
Amanda (The Nutritionist Reviews) says
You are probably the only hungover person who would clean…too funny!
Katy (The Singing Runner) says
Running is seriously the best hangover cure for me.
I was suffering from a pretty bad one on Friday and felt AWFUL until I did an easy 2 mile run in the afternoon. I instantly felt better!
I’ve also ran 6 miles after a late night of partying back in November and while the run was rough, I felt better after it too! I’m 2 for 2! Haha!
Sophie says
I mopped this morning too, but with a good ol’ mop and oil soap mixture. It works perfectly for our floors! I love when my cat looks at her reflection in the floor afterwards and is so confused.
I don’t know why, but I crave orange juice when I have a hangover. Something about the cold and citrus to wake me up, I guess!
Justeen @ Blissful Baking says
Glad that you are feeling better after a rough morning! I don’t think I could ever run 5.5 miles after a hangover! 🙂
Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing says
I so envy the supply of bubbly water 🙂 Definitely need to get my clean on up in here — usually I’m consistent with my weekend scrubbings, but I got caught up in baking today! Love those bright strawberries!
Krissy - Shiawase Life says
I mopped today, too! Good times…and you’re right, it’s GORGEOUS out. We went on a walk.
Lauren at Keep It Sweet says
I absolutely hate being hungover and it can happen with just 2 drinks these days. Definitely motivation not to drink too much.
Jennifer says
Ginger helps nausea (rather than mint). Keep in mind for pregnancy! Also slightly sour candy helps. For a few weeks I ate jolly rancher after jolly rancher until about 3 PM when I was pregnant. Not sure if that’s just a pregnancy thing or a general nausea thing.
KathEats says
We didn’t have any ginger or I would have had it!
Baking 'n' Books says
I find liquids after make me nauseous too. Same with after eating heavy meals or something ‘off’. Bah. Goes against all reasoning!! 🙂
Cara Craves... says
Oh Kath, you make me laugh!
Glad you are feeling better now.
Maybe you ran the hangover out of your system?!
Macrae says
You sure did rally! Great job! Your last sentence made me laugh. I feel the EXACT same way after I get my haircut. It’s like after I was it with my shampoo and dry it on my own, everything changes! Don’t fret though, it looks great and will be long again before you know it!
kaila @ healthyhelper blog! says
i always find that soup tastes better the second day! did yours? i lov ehaving it for lunch….so flavorful once all the ingredients have had time to meld together!
KathEats says
It usually does, but today it didn’t!!! I think we ate all the good pieces out the other night 🙂
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Dang, cleaning and running with a hangover?! You go, girl!
Jules says
First, I love your haircut. You may have inspired me to do the same!
Second, the best hangover cure (and the only one that I feel truly works) is to work out! I don’t have this problem often, but when I do, I hit the gym ASAP. It could be psychosymatic, but sweating it out seems to work best for me.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Yikes, sorry about the hangover-but I guess it turned out to be a great run?! 🙂 Love leftovers…I just had some delicious strawberries too, YUMM!
Jess (Sweet Potato) says
Working out often helps my hangovers as well. Sometimes I feel like I just need to work the toxins out of my body!
Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) says
Oh lord I just read that little comment interchange about your drinking.
Life. A balancing act.
Blogs. Letting our lives and our choices all hang out.
Readers. Hopefully having a sense of humor and to keep this thing called life all in perspective and that we all do the best we can 🙂
I heart you, Kath. And I hit up Amazon and ordered that photography stuff. Thank you 🙂

Working out always helps when I have a hangover!

Kath, I don’t comment much but I like when you and other healthy bloggers are REAL! I can’t strive to follow someones perfection, I strive to be better as you always do. A little too much fine wine, dark chocolate or bread…”doesnt make ya bad guy”as my husband says! thanks for being real, I like you best that way.
Allie @ Healthy Balance, Healthy Life says
Um. You mop and dust and run over 5 miles when you’re hung over? Can I be you last Sunday morning?
I guess oatmeal really does do a body good if you can do all that after a night out!
Ashley @ Feeding Ashley says
Your day sounds perfect. I’m glad you’re feeling better!
chelsey @ clean eating chelsey says
hangovers are the worse. I, luckily, have not had one in 8 months. My last one was after my wedding. Why did people let me drink so much wine?
KathEats says
Ohhh that’s a bummer to wake up to the day after!
Stephanie @ Walking my Talk says
The strawberries and chocolate look divine!
Emma (Namaste Everyday) says
way to go for you run! That’s inspiring, especially because I’m super tired and in need of movement, too
Jessica @ Jessica Balances says
Hi Kath, not sure if I’ve ever commented before but I’m a big fan of your blog. 🙂 I just had to comment after reading the hangover conversation several readers have been having. I actually woke up feeling a bit hungover this morning myself, after just two drinks last night (they were strong and I’m super sensitive to alcohol). Thank you for sharing that you were feeling a little under the weather this morning as well — we’re all human!
kate@ahealthypassion says
ahh hate hangovers, glad you are feeling better!
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
Kath I like reading that you are a human being who sometimes goes overboard — not every day, not every week, once in a blue moon. I appreciate that!
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
Ok and I didn’t try to say that you went overboard — there have been mornings that I wake up with a headache due to having one drink the night before and not enough water. It happens!
Chelsea says
I hate a hangover! But I am a lot like you, a workout always makes me feel better. It may hurt to get out the door, but it always feels better in the end. Plus, nothing feels better than clean floors!
Kris says
Thanks Kath for your posts on the Shark steamer. Although I have a steamer, it never worked right and has been sitting in my garage for almost seven years. After your first post, I decided I needed to try it again. I read a bunch of reviews which seemed to point towards the Eureka Enviro steamer, which is exactly what I have. I took it out, dusted off, put it to work, and it did exactly what it did seven years ago which was leave tons of water on the floor. Having an old, incontinent dog and lots of ceramic tile floor, this time I didn’t give up so easily. I read the directions, filled the tank w/ less water, put on a new cloth, and magic! So clean, and dry in minutes. Made it much easier to do the floor one more time tonight when we can home from dinner and the dog had had an accident from one end of the kitchen to the other. So you inspired me to steam, and it’s already made a messy situation much easier. Thanks :)!
KathEats says
🙂
Susan says
After Kath bought her Shark, I went to one of the reviews of steamers that someone had posted in the comments. The reviews said that the first few times the Eureka is used, it will leave a lot of water on the floor.
I want that Eureka steamer, but I didn’t see it online at BBB and when I went to Target today, they didn’t have it. 🙁 May have to get Shark instead.
Melissa says
Way to power through that hangover! I am seriously impressed.
It’s that second day haircut hangover, too . . . always seems shorter when you first get it cut. Give it a week. It looks great! I promise! 🙂

Beautiful beautiful food! Gosh I’m hungry. It’s 2pm and I haven’t had lunch yet…

I’ve just recently discovered your blog and I love it!! I too eat super healthy and workout. I also love wine 😉 I try to keep it to one or two glasses at the most. BUT there are those times when we all over do it just a little bit and feel it the next day. That’s life! Thank you for keeping it real! 🙂
Felicia says
Why don’t you just have Tylenol and be done with it?
KathEats says
If it were that simple don’t you think I would have been feeling better by 8AM?
Felicia says
You gotta pop a couple.
Kelly (meatlesswithaman.blogspot.com) says
Ugh, I totally know what you mean about water!!! I’ve always said that – and it seems counterintuitive (especially because it works for so many other people!!). But, oh the agony. Actually the only thing that ever makes me feel better is regular coke. That’s the only time I drink it – and it works wonders! 🙂

Just realized your “recipage” and I’m thrilled! I have been using your recipes for a while now to feed my family of seven. Was just wishing for a way to look through your recipes differently, and here it is. Thanks, Kath!

Hee hee, I will be an RD in about 6 months if all goes well with the exam, and Kath I make you look like an absolute teetotaler!! No, more like a pro-Prohibition temperance activist!

Still pondering on how to comment after reading the whole “bad influence” thing…. Seriously?!! you do a millon post on being healthy and the occassional post on a minor over indulgence…. Thinking that the person must not be a regular reader, or oboviously he would realize that the good far out weigh the bad… Keep doing what you do! You are an inspiration to many!!
Ps- I had 2 gin & tonics and a slice of pizza Saturday night and work up feeling crummy yesterday. My feeling is that I try to eat as clean as possible 98 % of the rest of the time, and when I do eat/drink something that I normally wouldn’t it leaves me feeling less than perky.
Charise says
I down a big glass of water + tums + ibuprofen + small snack if needed BEFORE sleep and that seems to help. Unfortunately, it seems the “cleaner” your diet normally is, the worse/more-easily-arriving the hangovers! I also think my definition of “hangover” is different than it was a few years ago – just being a little extra tired/sluggish and not feeling 100% in the morning vs the college days of barely being able to get out of bed, puking, etc.
I agree with the other readers who are inspired by your BALANCED healthy lifestyle that still lets you indulge and have fun and not be “perfect.” I don’t think you are encouraging/condoning overdrinking.
Carlee says
I loved your spoon so much I jumped right on Etsy and ordered some very cute “love” themed spoons for myself. It makes me smile when I stir my coffee or eat my oatmeal with these cute spoons. Great find Kath!!
