See any signs of spring at your house? Did you say “Rabbit” to celebrate March 1?
It’s so cool how we went from chilly, dry San Diego to freezing cold Chicago to a humid spring Cville in one day. Karen and I created a new word for our love of Cville: Jefferson [so creative, right?!].
I’ve said it in my head 3 times already!
I’m feeling totally jet lagged this morning. I don’t think I ever really adjusted to West Coast time either. My body would love a little stability, and it was confused if it was ready for breakfast or not this morning.
I made a smoothie with greek yogurt (about a cup), banana, oats and coconut water since we had no milk. Worked pretty well! Plus more banana, Uncle Sam Strawberry, chia seeds and Sunbutter on top.
Note to self: polish silver!
My stomach grew an inch last night. I woke up in the middle of the night on my side and my stomach was all pushed out and I felt like I was 6 months pregnant! This morning my pooch is harder – a sign something from within is pushing out. 14 weeks tomorrow!
Hope you have an awesome morning!
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Is saying “Rabbit” on March 1 good luck or a tradition? I’ve never heard of that… I must be out of the loop! Your breakfast looks delicious; I need to try making a smoothie using Greek yogurt.
KathEats says
I think so!
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Fun! I just read the wiki link you posted below – I’m going to try to remember to do this; I kind of love quirky traditions/ superstitions like that 🙂 I just whispered “rabbit rabbit” to myself in the library, haha.
Mom says
I think it has to be the first word you speak, which is why it’s hard to do (to remember when you first wake up). But keep saying it anyway. You never know. Rabbit! Rabbit!
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Yeah, my library whispering probably didn’t count 🙂 I wonder if setting a reminder on my phone would be cheating, haha.
Kimberly says
We always said “rabbit rabbit” on the first of every month (not just March) and you had to say it before your feet touched the floor in the morning. Not sure where all that came from, but that’s what my family thought it was!
Sana says
Pretty soon you and Karen will be speaking in code 🙂
Maria@ Sinfully Nutritious says
What a beautiful breakfast. Glad to see you are home safe!
Ashley @ My Food 'N' Fitness Diaries says
your bowl and placemat are so “spring-ish” – i love it!! i’m all about the green! 😉
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
I’ve never heard of saying “Rabbit” for 1st day of March? What’s the story behind that?
Yup, it’s still freezing here in SoCal..rainy and cold 🙁
KathEats says
Yeah, here’s more about it! Apparently i was supposed to say it twice!?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_rabbit
Nancy says
Yes, we’ve always said Rabbit Rabbit…. and I have a friend who actually says it THREE times! 🙂 I’m excited to read that the effect is supposed to be stronger in one’s birthday month! (although I said it a few minutes after waking up and starting talking this morning… so maybe I blew it)
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Looks so tasty – craving a smoothie for my sore throat! Love the bright green bowl.
j3nn says
Jefferson is a wonderful code word! He was one of the greatest. We need more Jeffersons today!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Happy almost 14 weeks Kath! And I’m so happy to hear that someone else says ‘rabbit’ at the beginning of the month too! I’m not superstitious but I used to have a teacher who said that you’re supposed to say “white rabbits” before anything else on the first day of each month for good luck. I definitely don’t remember to do it every month, but I think of it (usually after I’ve said about a billion other things… but apparently it doesn’t ‘work’ if it’s not the first word!) Nevertheless, happy March 1st!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I forgot about the “rabbit” thing at the beginning of a new month. Ha!
That’s crazy you can feel your stomach growing. My best friend said the weirdest thing was feeling the baby move in her – like a little alien. 🙂
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama says
I’ve never heard about saying “rabbit.” Does it count if you just said it and you’ve been awake for 5 hours?
Wait until your last trimester! You’ll think your belly can’t get any bigger but it does!!
Karen says
I feel like crap today after all the time changes we’ve been through in five days!
Lindsay @ Fuel My Family says
I thought of you this morning when I was making my oats. I made whipped banana oatmeal on the stovetop and my husband said “these are the best oats I’ve ever had. I usually have trouble finishing them but not these”. I guess I need to be less lazy and stop using the microwave, they really arent hard on the stovetop!
KathEats says
🙂
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
It’s a blizzard over here in NH!
KathEats says
Oh no! Hope you can go sledding!?
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I’m glad that you made it home safely! 🙂 That must be amazing to feel your stomach grow. I can only imagine how it’s going to feel when you start feeling movements from the baby.
Kinley @ Better Off Barefoot says
Wow, almost 14 weeks! That’s crazy! But I know what you mean about time change being a pain… I can hardly adjust to Spring ahead/fall back let along coast to coast changes… blah – I guess that’s what I get for being such a creature of habit.
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
Never heard the rabbit thing! Rabbit, rabbit, rabbit!! 🙂
So in love with the spoon, polished or not!
Jacqueline@digintobooks says
Yum!! Anything with Greek Yogurt sounds awesome to me-especially a smoothie! Great idea!!
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Rabbit…now that is something new! In a Winter Wonderland here in Southern Ontario. I ran in big fluffy snowflakes…the ground was so spongy soft to run on and the trees were all speckled white…just beautiful! I think I had my best run all year! Breakfast looks yummy…off to a great start as always! As March has came in like a ‘lion’ I am hoping it holds true that it will go out like a ‘lamb’!
Andrea @FrSeed2Stomach says
I really need to find some fun utensils and bowls. Where do you find such cool kitchen wares, kath?
KathEats says
Anywhere dishes are sold! The spoons are from my grandmother’s collection
Katie @ Peace Love and Oats says
Chicago was 60 degrees yesterday!! Haha we’ve been blessed with a not so freezing winter! And that’s so exciting that you’re almost 14 weeks! Congrats!
Kelly @ Vegolosophy says
Your breakfast looked very delicious! YAY on 14 weeks, very exciting! 🙂
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
how very exciting about the bump!! must be starting to feel very real!
Cait's Plate says
Gah! I forgot to do “rabbit rabbit” this morning – but hopefully my over-the-top March-themed green breakfast will suffice and I’ll have good luck despite missing out on my “rabbit rabbit.”
Traveling West —> East is the worst. I hope your body recovers quickly!
Sydney@ Nutrition with Sydney says
That spoon is gorgeous!
And that’s exciting about your belly 🙂
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Congrats on your baby bump…and on being back home and being able to get back into a routine and onto a certain time zone and not be all over the map, literally 🙂
Jill Will Run says
14 weeks tomorrow? You are exactly two weeks behind me! I’m 16 weeks tomorrow!
Jasper Naomi @ crunchylittlebites says
rabbits, mommy-to-be-, spring, silver polish, spring cleaning…theme here? 🙂
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
I’ve been CRAVING smoothies lately.. yum!!
It blows my mind how pregnant women can wake up one morning and suddenly they’ve popped!! So exciting!
KhushbOo says
That’s so exciting about the bump- bye bye jeans!
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Just said rabbit! I definitely can feel spring coming on. We’ve had weather in the 40s and 50s this week. For Chicago, that is downright balmy! lol
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
Welcome back home- and what great weather to come to! I’m actually wearing (stylish) flip flops to work today!
I bet you’re excited for that belly to start showing- I bet it gets old telling people that you’re pregnant since it’s not so visible yet!
Casey @ OatsAndNanners says
Kath, I’ve always LOVED reading your blog – I didn’t think it was possible, but all this baby talk has made me love it even more!! Your excitement really shines through (we can tell your glowing just from your posts!) Congrats again!
KathEats says
Thanks Casey!
Anna @ On Anna's Plate says
Haha…I’ve never heard of that “rabbit” tradition…but I like it!! 🙂 Jet lag is the worst. Hope you feel better!
Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot says
Ah so exciting! PS, I LOVE your spoons! Where do you find such cute dishes?!
Leah says
That smoothie sounds good. How much oats to you use? and how much milk/coconut water/liquid?
KathEats says
I use 1/4 cup of oats in my smoothie and usually about 3/4 cup liquid
Robyn @ Blueberries and Oats says
Try to take it easy this morning! Jet lag can be the worst. >.< When I got back to Montana after a 3 month stay in Japan, I honestly felt like I was going to die. Take a nap if you need it!
Tiff @ Love Sweat and Beers says
I can happily reply that yes, there are some signs of spring at my house. Today brings nice weather, and there are daffodils blooming in my yard. Yay Spring! 🙂
Suz says
Lol! I laughed a bit when you said that your stomach growing an inch made you feel like you were six months pregnant. As a woman six months into my second pregnancy, I assure you that I only *wish* what I was dealing with right now was only an inch of belly!
KathEats says
Oh, what I meant was when I was asleep my stomach was all pushed out – you know how you can push it out? That’s what felt huge. When I stand up I’m clearing barely showing a bump!
Amelia says
14 weeks, yay! Your b-fast looks so good that I’m now hopping off my computer to make a smoothie with toppings.
Lindzjane115 says
Welcome back to Cville–what a perfect day to initiate your code-word “jefferson”! Did you know March is National Peanut Month and today is National Peanut Butter Day?!
KathEats says
Fun!!
RunEatRepeat says
I never heard of the rabbit tradition, but I kinda think you should refer to the baby as the “rabbit” or “bunny” in your belly now 🙂
Deirdre @ Oh Well Whatever says
It’s so exciting to feel you body start changing. Just wait til you feel him/her moving around in there. Can’t even begin to try and explain it, most amazing thing ever and I miss it so much.
My sister taught me to say rabbit 3 times as the first thing out of your mouth on the first of each month. I never remember. It was easy when we lived together cause she would scream it at me across the house and I would mumble it back to her.
Ellie@Fit for the Soul says
Whoaa I didn’t know a stomach with a baby could grow THAT fast overnight! That’s pretty cool In my opinion 🙂 Hehe, when my sis was pregnant, my lil nephew would always “stretch” and try to do “exercises” because of the way he pushed out his feet one direction all the time. 😛
Samantha says
Rabbit! I’ve said that at the beginning of every month for about 35 years now:)
xo
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Always feels good to be home and get back into your home routine.
Christine @ Oatmeal in my Bowl says
I’m so hungry right now… breakfast looks so yummy! (just went to the dentist. can’t eat. numb. i know, TMI) 😉
A Teenage Gourmet (Sami) says
Try being a student at UVa and going one day without hearing or speaking the word “Jefferson.” Literally impossible. I’m taking a seminar devoted to the man, haha.
KathEats says
Lots of Cville love going around grounds 🙂
Molly @ RDexposed says
I was expecting to see rabbit for breakfast. That’d win for oddest pregnancy craving!
Katie @ Plates and Paste says
Ahhh I thought I was the only one who did the rabbit thing haha! I forgot to say it this morning :/
Tiffany says
Breakfast looks amazing as usual!
As an RD how much protein do you recommend at each meal and snack to keep one full and satisfied?
Thank you so much Kath! Hope you have an amazing day as well 🙂
KathEats says
I don’t have a recommendation per meal – I think that would get a bit tedious to count! Instead just make sure you’re having something that contains protein with each meal. Like for breakfast: milk, yogurt, eggs; Lunch: beans, eggs, deli meat, tofu, fish; Snacks: dairy, nuts; Dinners: meats, fish, tofu, beans
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
It’s a humid day over here, too! Yummy looking breakfast! I’ve been adding some coconut water to my smoothies lately as well.
Sarah says
Are you going to do belly bump photos? I bet you will be just the cutest pregnant mamma ever 🙂 Glad you made it home safe. Enjoy your weather!
KathEats says
Yup
Caitlin @ Cake with Love says
Is this an American tradition to say “Rabbit” on March first?
Alyssa says
Oh my goodness! So excited to see the Rabbit on your site.
My boyfriend and I tend to set our alarms for the middle of the night to say Rabbit.
The rule I know for the say is that you can actually stay it on the 1st day of EVERY month before your “feet hit the floor” in the morning. And actually, we say “Rabbit Rabbit”…I’ve been doing it since childhood.
Angel7 says
My stomach is growing, too! Sometimes when I am so full I look more pregnant than I am 🙂
