I met up with Penny + Kelsey this AM for some hot yoga and a hot walk on a hot day!
Yoga was great – nice and hot!! By the time I left I was shaking and pruned. Back in the day I used to not care for yoga because it doesn’t burn very many calories, but these days I realize that while I might not burn many calories during yoga, I bet it has a super high after burn effect because my muscles always feel worn out and calling for replenishment and repair.
We came back to Kelsey’s and took quick showers before lunch. We were both famished!
Penny and I had a party in Kelsey’s bed!
Then we set out on foot in this 100* weather for lunch at Zada Janes – Penny in tow!
Kelsey just moved to the cutest neighborhood on the cutest street!
We were the only ones brave enough to dine outdoors but we had to stow our dog somewhere!
Holy water refreshment!
I ordered the Hummus Frummus Salad …..homemade hummus and tabuleh, served with roasted red peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, shaved carrots and toasted walnuts on organic spring mix with pita wedges on the side.
Although now that I read this I got gypped on the walnuts!!
And I ate it ALL!!!!
A huge bowl of delicious hummus totally hit the spot
SO excited to find their tabuleh didn’t contain onions! It had basil too. I never get to eat it because of the red onion contamination.
Pita fluff
Kelsey got a veggie burger on a croissant with an almond cheese sauce and collards – yum!
She shared a bite
I am not fuming garlic from the hummus, but it was worth it
After lunch we walked Penny for about 30 minutes around the neighborhood. I still felt hungry when I was seated, but as soon as I stood up the lunch + 2 full glasses of water hit me like a rock in my stomach and I needed the walk to digest!
I’m back at home (in the AC!!) and about to do some writing.

PS. A lot of you have emailed and commented about the funny characters in my blog posts. I have no idea why you are seeing them. I actually saw them for a day or so and then they went away, so my hope is that they go away for you guys too. In say, a week’s time, if they’re still there, please let me know. If I don’t respond, don’t worry – I still got your message!

Nothin’ like hot yoga during the dog days of August 🙂 I definitely experience the shaky muscles and worn-out feeling after a good, sweaty session. That croissant veggie burger looks amazing!
Shannon (The Daily Balance) says
I love that the salad is called Hummus Frummus – makes me smile! I cannot beleive you guys braved 100 degree temps sitting outside. I was complaining when it was mid 90s the other day!
kay (eating machine) says
What a yummy looking lunch!
I hope you’re doing ok in the heat-it was like that two weeks ago here in oregon, and we were DYING. (but, for some reason, nothing in oregon has AC… that might be part of our problem 🙂 )
Faith says
Love the cute puppy pics! That hummus looks sooooo amazing!
katey says
yum! your lunch looks really good ! 🙂
Cait (Cait's Plate) says
HAHA! Hummus Frummus!? If that’s seriously the name of the sandwich I am IN LOVE with that place!
I LOVE Penny! Too cute! And Kelsey’s burger looks way too good. Such an awesome idea to put it on a croissant! I wish I had this place near me!
Glad yoga was fun! And yeah – the weird characters went away for me after a day too…so fret not! 🙂
Deva says
Oh your lunch looks super yummy – I love hummus in so many different forms.
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says

As I scrolled down I caught sight of the first picture from your breakfast post … do you see a face, too?
Eve says
I agree yoga can be a really great workout. It can go either way, depending on the type. But I love it!
Spotty Prep says
I love the pictures of you and Penny! The 1st one in the second row cracked me up 🙂 Looks like a fun time!
Lara says
That has got to be the best lunch plate I have ever seen.
Unfortunately worn out/tired muscles have nothing to do with calorie burn. If only 🙂 The after burn effect of any type of exercise is quite modest actually despite what we read over and over. I try not to think of my workouts in terms of calories burned and more for what they do for my overall health and stress relief.
Jess says
That veggie burger looks so good! I wish we had more healthy restaurant options around us!
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
Wow, 100F eating outside? CRAZY! lol When we lived in Atlanta, I didn’t even want to eat inside in the AC during the summer. I don’t handle heat well. 😳 That hummus platter looks awesome though!
Love the doggy. Want! 🙂
That character error is weird. I use Firefox to visit your site, so I don’t see it but when I load it in IE, I do. Weird. Dustin doesn’t know where they came from either unless it’s a WLW thing?

I think the whole east coast is burning up!!
What cute puppy!! Glad you enjoyed lunch!
Suzanne says
Penny is adorable! What a sweet face!
You’re braver than me! I hid out in my air-conditioned cubicle all day. Unfortunately, the car I was sitting in on the train home had no a/c! I was a pool of sweat by the time I got to my stop! 🙁
stay cool everyone!
Andee (Runtolive) says
You’re right about yoga, I never did yoga before because I was always the ‘cardio’ girl and thought if I wasn’t sweating and working out as hard like in yoga, I wasn’t burning any calories. Ever since I picked up yoga 3 months ago twice a week, I have noticed increased muscle definition and more flexibility. It has also helped my running a lot regarding balance and flexibility.
Nicole says
Yum. A fresh lunch like that always tastes amazing after yoga.
Marissa says
AW! Yay Penny!!!
Jessica says
That lunch looks awesome! I hate onions too, so this looks divine. The pitas esp 🙂

Christie @ Quit Your Diet says
Though I don’t practice yoga for the calorie burn, you might be surprised by how much you burn in hot yoga. I’m not sure which style you are practicing and how hot the room is but in bikram yoga, I wore my HRM once out of curiosity and I burned 700 calories. Granted, I weigh more than you but that is still a significant amount. I have also worn my HRM in vinyasa once before and burned 450 in a 75 minute class.
Liz says
what a cute orange sundress! do you know where she got it?
Shawnee says
What a cute dog! That lunch looks fantastic. I’m so ready for dinner.
Serena says
those weird characters went away for me – they were there for a few days but now seem to be completely gone!
FitFoodie says
Hummus and Tabouleh…I LOVE it!
That burger looks awesome, anything on a croissant makes it 10 times better 🙂
Susan says
That restaurant looks fab!! Hummus, tabouli, veggie burgers… all my favourite things!!! Personally, I think wicked garlic breath is the sign of a great meal 😉
Lauren says
Sometimes, exercise should be more focused on burning stress than calories, so I completely think that yoga is a necessary aversion from the usual sweat fest. I am sure it felt amazing today!
What a wonderful lunch date with a fantastic gal. The pup made some great company too! 🙂
Hope you are enjoying this super hot day.
Take care Kath!
Kath says
Christie ,
I wore mine in a hard 1.5 hour vinyasa hot yoga class and barely broke 200 calories. But I do hear that HRM’s aren’t accurate when HR is under 120 or so. So I choose to believe it’s more than that.
Liz ,
I don’t know – sorry!
Serena ,
Oh, so good to hear! Thanks for letting us know there’s hope 🙂

Tay says

ErinMac says
Oh, I’ve been wanting hummus all week and haven’t made it yet!! Your post just gave me the push. Sooo good!
You look great in the picture with the puppers! Very glow-y.
Ashley says
Kath – You said you never feel like you get that good of a calorie burn from yoga but I thought you’d like to know that Vinyasa Flow yoga burns appx. 445cals/hour!! Might be even more w/the crazy heat in that place!! You definitely earned your lunch 😉 Wish I could have been there with you and Kels!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
that dog is insanely adorable. i want to burrow my face in that fur.
jessica says
My hubby got the characters to go away by going to view, then encoding and selecting unicode. Good luck.

Nicole (dishin') says
The hummus dish looks so yummy! I would have finished it off too!
Sarah says
Yum, that hummus lunch looks delicious!
Yoga definitely tones my muscles whether it burns much calories or not.
What a cute dog!
Kath says
Jac ,
Do you mean our post-lunch walk? I would hardly call that a workout – we were just strolling. Walking is great for digestion! I could not have ran or bounced after lunch.
Kath
Jac says
I mean like when u get up early to run ?
I got up early once, and i nearly died running on empty. lol
Kath says
Jac ,
Everybody’s different. Sometimes I can easily run on empty and other times I’m hungry and need a snack.
