So I’m "hungrier" (=thirst) than I normally am after a long run and also have that woozy, tired feeling in my body. I figured out – I’m SO DEHYDRATED. I think the culprit was going into that run dehydrated from being out of town and not drinking enough water yesterday.
But I also got my Camelbak "bladder" [ew] out to clean it and discovered I barely made a dent in my water!! I thought I’d had 5 cups (I drank at least every mile and felt a bit full in the belly) but I don’t think I had very much at all. That explains it!
Dinner tonight was a piece of cake to put together. We thawed in the fridge all day and then heated in the microwave frozen leftovers from this Mexican Bison Pasta we made a while back. The pasta WITH sauce ended up freezing perfectly fine! We spiced up the pasta with the last of the Don Sabrosa Black Bean Salsa, which I really loved!! With my onion aversion, this was an exception to my consistent hatred for oniony salsas – it was great!
To go with the pasta, we sauteed up a big green cabbage. I like vinegar, but I’m not a vinegar lover. I feel like all cabbage dishes are vinegar based! So when I was at the Rowan Salisbury Schools, they had simple steamed green cabbage seasoned with just some canola oil, salt and pepper. It was so good – actually sweet!!!! Tonight I replicated it by sautee-steaming it on the stovetop and loved the result. Just a little water to help it steam in a big pot and drizzled with a tsp of oil and S+P at the end.
Project Hydrate!! <– Diana is having a hydration challenge and at least for tonight, I’m game!
Havin’ some tea and two Biscoffs while Matt and I watch the Simpsons.
Ahhhh it feels good to finally relax!
(Big Open Sky promo tomorrow AM that involves cha-cha-cha chia!)
Nite!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
I love green cabbage sauteed this way! It’s also delicious with a bit of seedy dijon mustard stirred in after it’s been cooked and browned in a pan (without any water, it browns pretty nicely! 😀 )
Hydration is so important…I can relate to that “woozy” feeling of being dehydrated after a run!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
I love meals that take just a few minutes to throw together.. looks delicious!
Food Makes Fun Fuel says
Your dinner sounds so good. Although I am a vinegar freak and probably would have used one of those recipes 😉 And the whole thing really froze together perfectly? I would have thought the pasta and sauce and emat wouldn’t work all at the same temp–go figure!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
I love cabbage!!! One of my favorites! I also love easy to freeze meals. Makes life so much easier. Good luck with the hydration. It is so strange how you feel when you are dehydrated. Have a nice evening!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I was away at Fit Bloggin’ this weekend and I’m just catching up on your posts– looks like you had a fun weekend!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
i love cabbage! it’s so good sauteed with salt and pepper…yum! just make sure you keep hittin’ that water glass!!!
Heather says
I hate feeling dehydrated, glaf you figured it out.

Looks like a good dinner!
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
My poppa always sautes cabbage–love it! I saw Biscoff at WF’s the other day and thought of you.
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
I get that same feeling after I don’t drink enough. Suck down the water tonight and you should feel better.
I loved the Simpsons and Hunni and I watch every week. Enjoy!
Lauren @ eater not a runner says
I’ve been feeling that way recently too! I think I may need a new water bottle to motivate me 😉
Run Sarah says
Looks like a great dinner! I rarely cook cabbage but I really like the idea of simply steaming it. Have a great evening!
Jenny says
I’m hydrating, too! Gotta love that H20!
Foy Update - Cook. Garden. Write. Repeat. says
Those look like the cookies you get on Delta flights. I love those!
Gabriela says
Never thought of making steamed cabbage!
Great idea, Kath 🙂
Have a great week, girl!

Heather @ The Single Dish says
Great run!! Cabbage looks great, I always forget to make it. Thanks for the reminder 🙂
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Get hydrated again and you’ll be feeling better.
Diana says
Neat, that’s me!! Thanks for linking to Project Hydrate Kath! Glad you’re hydrating up tonight. I’ve been bad about hydration this weekend. Eek!
I love sauteed / steamed cabbage with just salt and pepper. So simple, but so good!
Have a great week and see you Wednesday! 🙂
Kaye says
Mmmm… I LOVE cabbage! LOVE IT! When I was growing up, my mom would saute it with 2 slices of ginger, oil and salt/pepper. I love eating it plain sauteed now! Especially topped with baked beans! You can cook it with turmeric and mustard seed, that’s how my aunt taught me to cook it! It tastes like Indian dosa filling!
CABBAGE!
Heather says
I love that Mexican Pasta recipe – I’ve made it twice now after seeing it on your blog.
Great run today!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Oooo I love cabbage!!!
Ashley says
Sweeeet. I need to order chia seeds!!
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
I bought a package of Biscoffs today, they are delicious. They fall apart easily though! lol
Your pasta bowl reminds me of the way my mom and I eat pasta; we put our salads right on the plate or bowl and eat it side by side. It’s delicious, especially with EVOO + vinegar on the salad.

What a neat dinner mix! Keep the chugging going! 😉

Hi Kath! I was just watching the first part of the new Jamie Oliver Food Revolution on ABC where he goes to an elementary school in West Virginia to try to make healthy changes in the cafeteria. Did you see it?
I thought of you since you were recently working in a school cafeteria, but from what you described it seems that the setting you were in was much more open and hopeful. It was really discouraging to see how poorly we are feeding our kids. If you haven’t seen it I would definitely recommend it.
Kath says
I didnt’ see it! I need to DVR that show.l
HeatherBakes says
I’m down with the hydration challenge. I have a 3 month old and it’s insane how thirsty I get from nursing- seriously, it’s worse than training for a marathon. Weird but true (and sorry if that was TMI!).
LOVE the Biscoff cookies!!!!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i’ve recently started roasting cabbage – it turns out kinda like brussels sprouts – especially good with bacon!
Kath says
Ohhhh! Roasted!! I never would have thought to try that!
Lauren says
Hey Kath! I haven’t read your blog in a while but it was always one of my favourites. I’m happy to be back! The camelbak looks so cool, I definitely want to try one of those when I start going for longer runs. Do you find it helpful? Hope all is well xox Lauren
Kath says
YES. Lifesaver.
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
How do you still have Biscoffs? You must stock up each time you fly! 😉
Kath says
I got 3 packs as gifts and am working my way through the second one!
Anne @ Food Loving Polar Bear says
I love cabbage with vinegar – it’s the best but I’m a passionate vinegar lover and could eat it everyday in all my foods 😀
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
I love cabbage…I really should eat it more!
I really struggle to drink on runs – I try to as much as possible, but it is hard – I think that was part of my problem on my half mary yesterday 🙁
I hope you enjoyed The Simpsons! 🙂
Hannah says
Enjoy relaxing! A cuppa and cookies is the perfect way to do that, I say 🙂
The Paris Food Blague says
oh triste, i love vinegar! especially with cabbage….but i could see how it could get boring after a while cabbage is also very good with sesame oil btw…
à bientôt

Chelsea says
I’ve never frozen it-I need to 😉
Get hydrated girl!
How do you clean out a bladder? I always just put water in mine.
Kath says
It was a very dilute solution, so I just rinsed it well
sarah (the SHU box) says
hydration = key! but some of that hunger might also be real — i have definitely experienced the ‘bottomless pit’ effect on long run days and sometimes it just needs to be honored 🙂
Nicole, RD says
What a great way to use bison! And I love simple cabbage, too…yum!
Erica says
hey hey! How are you? How are things in Charlotte? How is the house sale going? I will have to email with you and catch up 🙂 I hate that dehydrated feeling! hope you get plenty of water in and feel better tomorrow. Yummy looking dinner.
Katie says
Usually if I’m feeling woozy, it means my electrolytes are low. Food and water help. Make sure you are fueling those long runs properly!
Amanda @ Cakes and Ale says
I love to bulk up pasta meals like that with veg. Last night we made a goat cheese asparagus pasta from a Martha Stewart cookbook and rather than just load up on that, I gave myself a half portion over a bunch of steamed spinach… mixed it all in, and couldn’t tell the difference at all! Still tasted indulgent.
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
I have to work really hard to hydrate too…I’m horrible at it!
Callie says
I know this is stupid but I looked at the picture of your camelbak “bladder” before I read anything and I thought to myself'”Why is she holding an IV bag in her hand?”Then I read it.LOL
Kacy says
Seems like it would be really hard to stay properly hydrated during such long runs, but you’re right – it’s sooo important.
nicole says
make sure you aren’t diluting your electrolytes. too much water without replacing potassium and sodium is actually more likely making you feel that way. eat a banana with your water or drop 3 or 4 Emergen-C packs in a liter of water, and you will hydrate far more efficiently than via water alone.
