I’ve been having crazy mood swings , extreme cravings and such today. Hormones?
Here’s breakfast ….a little late than never!
- Prepared banana oats with hemp milk
- 1/3 cup wheatberries
- Flax
- Trail mix
- PB spoon
I was also strangely craving hot tea , so I had some of that as well.
Then I was starving at 9:30 !! I was 10 minutes from digging into my lunch when I switched classes and when it was time, I wasn’t hungry at all.
We took our lecture/lab break really early at 11:15, so I had an early lunch.
PB&J . I LOVE PB&J but it never fills me up and usually leaves me wanting more. Today was no different –
Also had Fage (ate it first so there was no chance of wasting it!), a big carrot and a plumble jumble:
So since we labbed early, we finished early! I was done at 1p.m. The plan was to workout at Winthrop’s gym , which I had been excited about all morning. But at 1, I felt drained. No energy for a workout, so I decided to go home and use the afternoon to get a paper done.
Once home, a nap sounded appealing, as i could barely keep my eyes open on the drive back. But I HATE NAPS !! I hate sleeping in general – there are so many more fun things to do, but I found myself asleep in bed 10 minutes from walking in the door. And I slept for 45 minutes!!! I can usually just snooze for 15 and wake myself up when I do nap, so that was out of character too. Guess i needed the sleep.
I think I dreamt of Kashi crackers because I woke up with a huge craving for them. And I didn’t just have a few, I had three handfuls this size. I was a little hungry, but that wasn’t the best way to sit and enjoy a snack.
So now i’m in my workout clothes with dinner packed and have 30 minutes to write this paper before I go to the gym. I don’t think it’s getting written today.
We’ll see where this afternoon takes me…. woooooo (ghost noise).
Emily says
Nap= 🙂 I love a short nap or a long one but normally I just wake up after 15 or 20 minutes. Take care Kath.

Hi Everyone!
I hope someone reading this is from South Dakota or has visited because I need your help!
I’m visiting the Black Hills/Mt. Rushmore with my family this weekend and need recommendations: where to eat, what to do, where to stay etc.
If you have any info please let me know–it would be such a huge help
Thanks! 🙂
Mags says
Maybe you’re pregnant.
Seriously, though:
1. There’s only 6 crackers in your hand. So 3 handfuls = 18 crackers = 147 calories. I think you can relax.
2. Re: sleep- it’s clear you’ve been overdue for a rest day for quite awhile. Your body finally forced you to stop for a freakin’ minute and take a break.
Remember sleep produces important hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism, so it’s a crucial part of any weight loss and maintenance. And healthy living in general!
Drew says
Could you be PG? That sounds like symptoms!
Or…you could just be exhasted…you’re schedule is crazy!
Heather says
Sounds like you needed the rest! I usually hate naps too, but sometimes they’re just necessary.
Good luck on the paper!
A.Cook says
That’s too funny Kath–I hate sleeping also! I unfortunately am one of those people who needs a good amount (really no less than 8 hours) to be able to function…but sometimes I wish it weren’t necessary because there are so many other things I could fill those hours with!
Hope you feel back to normal soon.
Justy2003 says
Sounds like your body needed a little break! Good job listening to it and giving it what it needed at the time 🙂
Emily says
Has anyone checked Cristin’s blog lately? She made a comment about not being able to push her hunger off anymore and it’s like yeah, um you are pregnant!!!
arielle says
That’s not too many crackers. I’ve done much worse.
Betsy says
i hate napping too. it throws off my entire day. i could go for a nap right now though…
alo says
What’s the big deal about that, Emily? I feel like everyone from time to time pushes hunger aside if you get really busy and lose track of time or whatever. Not trying to start anything, I’m just saying that I know what she’s talking about.
Little Black Dress says
Kath, we are all rooting for you- you have worked so hard the past couple of weeks- only a few more until you can enjoy being a “normal” person again. Thanks for continuing to keep us in the loop- you can do it!
leslie says
regarding cristin- yeah, it’s definitely a refreshing change seeing her eat like a normal person for once! (ie, 3 actual meals per day rather than like 1 mini tub of yogurt to go between breakfast and dinner)
Chelsea says
I chalk it up to stress and your crazy schedule-the cravings and the sleep wouldn’t BAM happen on one day so I wouldn’t worry about being preggers! 😛
Colleen says
Sounds like baby on the way symptoms to me.
Anne P says
aww sounds like you were just overworked after your crazy few weeks! glad you listened to your body and gave it some rest 🙂 enjoy the rest of the day!
Ry says
Heh, from your blog it doesnt seem that you have potatoes very often, despite them being sweet potatoes from the night before, your cravings might be due to a hightened starch intake!
…or, you could be pregnant. 😀
Kelsey says
I wouldn’t exactly call kashi crackers an extreme pregnant-like craving people. Come onnnn.
BethT says
You know, PMS symptoms are similar to pregnancy symptoms. I get tired, hungry and cranky when I have PMS. And I definitely ain’t pregnant.
Em says
hahahaha
this post and it’s comments are making me laugh!
first of all kath, you are hilarious- everything from your ghost noise to the plumbly wumbly. that made me chuckle.
whew, thanks for the smiles.
And I completely agree on the PB & J (always want more), but have to disagree about sleep (love it!).
have a great rest of your tuesday!
ppp says
wait – is cristin on Eat Like Me really pregnant? i didnt know.
(funny how you feel like you really know people whose blogs you read… i got so excited for her- haha!)
Brie says
I totally thought you might be pregnant too! Of course, I can’t talk from personal experience, but the thought did cross my mind. 🙂
Hil says
I agree that Kath really didn’t eat *that* many crackers. But I know that for me, even a tiny overindulgence can feel really lousy if I do it the wrong way or for the wrong reasons. Eating really fast, eating mindlessly, eating because I have terrible out-of-control cravings…not fun. So I think I see where Kath is coming from. Even if you don’t eat that much, the manner of eating can feel really lousy.
Feel better, Kath. I think you needed that nap!
Rose says
Katie – my brother and his family live in South Dakota. I don’t know any recommendations off the top my head, but I could find out! Feel free to shoot me an email, [email protected]. I’ll try to find some things out.
Oh, and Kath, I don’t think you’re pregnant — for the record, unless you’re EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY tired. My coworker was that way during the start of hers…
Brittany says
Those Kashi crackers are addictive like that. I always end up eating more than I planned on. And Kashi’s Cinnamon Harvest cereal… I ate around 4 handfuls of that last night. hmmm maybe it has something to do with Kashi products.
Christin says
Kath, I must stop and applaud your efforts to maintain so well while trying to work so hard! Give yourself the recognition you deserve, and don’t think twice about those crackers…
Just wondering, do you ever spend any time just quietly stretching? I find that it calms me, and relaxes tension in my muscles and helps me keep up a large workload…also decaf tea in the afternoons…keeps the cravings off and keeps me calm and refreshed so I can get stuff done…just thought i’d share 🙂
Clara says
Hey Kath – take it easy on yourself and give yourself a pat on the back, not many are as motivated and productive as you! 🙂
as for the pregnant thing, feeling tired and having cravings for crackers is a pretty normal thing. unless we knew kath well in real life, i dont think we can “think” kath is pregnant just from this post, haha!
Lauren says
I find it a little odd to speculate (out loud) whether someone is pregnant or not…that’s kind of a personal, private matter.
Laurel says
I think it’s great that you let your body rest, Kath. It sounds like you’ve been going, going, going for a really long time and needed to rest.
I went through a grueling grad school program that just ended last December, all while working two jobs and exercising consistently, plus all the household chores and stuff. At the end I got so sick I lost my voice completely for more than a week, which never ever happens to me. So it’s good that you’re listening to your body.
Just out of curiousity—do your family or friends ever get on your case about exercise? I know my parents, especially my mother, are always telling me to stop going to the gym so much and slow down.
BethT says
It’s pretty common for people to always think young newlywed women are preggers. When I first got married, I got that from EVERYONE (for like 3 years!) every time I felt tired, cranky or sick to my stomach.
9 years later, they’ve gotten the hint that I’ll let them know when I’m having a baby :p
Kelly T says
yeah, im pretty much a sleepy basket case all the time. based on everyone’s calculationsi should have had about 9 kids by now. all of them sets of twins.
honey seasame’s are so addictive. i put a box down today, cause i knew it would be just like putting $2.50 right into my belly.
Christin says
I couldn’t agree more, BethT! I’ve been married for almost 6 years now, and they only recently just gave up asking me about it, lol!
adria says
You probably should just take a day of rest. I like mine to be wednesdays- even though I plan them for the weekends 😛
sirenjess says
Laurel, my family gets on my case but today I realized that I am working out too much. I did a cycle class then ran four miles and was planning on doing barbell strength tonight at six. I wanted to go and have the energy but then I thought about it and everyone I told was like “that’s too much exercise”. So i’m doing that class tomorrow even though my favorite instructor is teaching tonight. Oh and the baby thing. I’ve been married for three years and I am a teacher. There is no way in Hell i’m getting preggers any time soon. I wish someone would tell my parents that. lol!
Thoughts says
Ha ha these comments make me laugh, just a few notes…
1) I don’t think Kath is pregnant. So she has mood swings and wierd hunger. It happens.
2) I agree on the cracker thing. You had three small handfuls of crackers. I wouldn’t even call that a handful. More like a handhalf. They were crackers, not chocolate truffles.
3) YOu needed a break. Life is TOO short to be so structured.
Can't hold it in says
I just have to say it, I can’t keep it in and I’m sorry but Kath being pregnant makes me wonder if she puts “sex with Husband” in her planner and adds it to her to do list. Hmmmmm…..
Becca A says
I know when I am getting too tired I feel exhausted (obviously) and feel more hungry than usual. I think its my body trying to give me some more energy.
Clara says
okay, I think we all just need to lay off Kath’s personal life. It’s not nice or considerate to her; she does such a good job to keep up this great blog, answer all of our questions, has such a great attitude, etc. and we shouldn’t repay her by speculating about stuff as private as her sex life, sheesh!
Jessica says
You have been going super strong, even on the weekends :o) You know better than most the importance or balance, you may need to allow yourself a little more rest for a couple days to catch-up. I made the quinoa salad tonight – it was great! I used TJ’s seafood blend, I was a little nervous on over coming the calamari but loved it!
Emily says
My point Alo, was that as a Pregnant Blogger and as an RD, it sounded somewhat idiotic to state that you can not stave off your hunger like you used to or you feel like crap…hello needs of the unborn child?? I hope you are not pregnant and feeling hungry…LOL
tiedtogetherwithasmile says
I absolutely love the pictures of your meals with the place mat, napkin, and candle. It makes it much more fun and relaxing to eat when the table looks nice!
Andrea says
Wow Kath, I’ve been EXACTLY the same today. Haha. I’ve been having crazy cravings, eating more than I please to (because like you- I tend to eat very healthy), no energy for workout today (which is definitely not me as I workout 6 times a week), zero energy– I actually napped today!
But thankfully- I KNOW I’m not pregnant, haha, and can definitely count my current period as the evil culprit. BLECH!
I’m sure your suffering from PMS/ Exhaustion like me today!
No worries though— tomorrow it’s diet clean up day! =D
Saima says
haha @ Can’t hold it in !! 😀
Kath says
Haha – you guys are just too quick to assume things! I think it’s just regular PMS 🙂
Christin ,
I do love stretching…and need to do it more. I’ll do some tonight- thanks for the reminder.
Laurel ,
My whole family likes exercise (my dad walks like 6-7 miles a day!) so they all think exercising is normal and part of a healthy life. But my grandfather thinks getting up at 5 to exercise is ridiculous because he “has maintained his weight his whole life with just 20 minutes on the Stat bike and 100 push-ups.” Lol.
Kath
Cravings cause says
Hi y’all-
what no one’s mentioned: I think Kath’s mood swings & cravings were CAUSED by tiredness! I know when I haven’t gotten enough sleep it makes me starving; and actually, there are chemical changes in the brain that cause feelings of hunger when there’s a lack of sleep.
So: all morning Kath was feeling moody and hungry and craving stuff, then she accidentally fell asleep for a long nap, which is unusual for her. I think tiredness was at the root of it all! Case closed 🙂
Kiala says
God.. I’m
pregnantTIRED just thinking about Kath’s schedule.Amy says
Hi Kath – I just wanted to say thanks for sharing your down swings as well as your ups. Your commitment and success helps me to focus more on my portion sizes (since I do eat healthy). But in some ways I think it was even better to read about your own struggles and the way that you’re patient with yourself. Sometimes it’s hard to just be patient with yourself and do what feels right. I think all of us can use a reminder of that.
Korin says
I’m late on this and just wondering– do you think we could all agree not to use the terms “preggers” or “prego” regarding a woman being pregnant? Big time pet peeve.
Thanks 🙂
Kathy says
Katie — I am from Rapid City (the Black Hills) and can give you some info. I don’t exactly want to use this comments section to write a huge thing. I’m also not sure I want to put my email address out there. Do you know of a way we can get in touch? Kathy
