A little birdie told me that September 26th is Nickelodeon’s World Wide Day of Play. A whole day dedicated to playing sounds like a kid’s dream! In reality, every day should have time dedicated for playing and being active.
In our house, we are always finding ways to be active. Whether it’s walking to our favorite stores, hitting the park, or running around our own backyard. Even on rainy days we build forts, make obstacles courses, or have truck races.
With increased technology in our children’s lives, physical activity has fallen to the wayside. Unfortunately, this has caused rates of childhood obesity and health problems to increase.
Today, I’m sharing the importance of physical activity in childhood–and beyond! Of course, I had to use my favorite medium for informative topics… an infographic! Feel free to pin and share!
What are your favorite ways of staying active?

I’m a kindergarten teacher and we have to beg, barter, and fight for play in school. Our kids get the minimum required 30min for PE, but don’t let an admin walk in a K class and see them playing. Many of our kids can’t play outside after school due to parents working and safety concerns. Thank you for spreading the message of the need for play. The research on brain development through play is astounding.

Scary! Question: you quote that children spend 7.5 hours in front of a screen…is that per day? per week? Fingers crossed for “per month” !!!! ugh

Favorite ways of staying active = running, walking outside, gardening, watering the trees and such, cleaning the house, cooking!, and probably just having an active job where I have to walk back and forth all day. 😉

Kath, your blog has so many adds and pictures and such that it takes FOREVER to load on my computer! Really frustrating when I’m trying to enjoy what you’ve written. I hope you’ll take this into consideration.

It’s definitely sad to see how little exercise most kids get now! I remember always being outside when I was younger, and in just fifteen years things have certainly gone downhill! Love that Mazen is always so active and that you and Matt spend so much time playing with him!

It’s weird someone would say your page has too many ads…I don’t see a single one today on this post! Or even in the sidebar.
I am interested in how you guys make sure Mazen gets enough movement in during the winter months. I am always struggling to come up with fun activities for my boys (3 & 1 1/2) during the months we are trapped inside due to bad weather. Maybe a future post idea? 🙂

Kath – I love your blog and read daily! Favorite = yoga, walking and running. I was also happy to learn that my home state (Mississippi) is on the good list (requiring physical education) for something! Thanks for sharing.

This post was awesome, Kath. My 3 year old’s preschool does a great job of setting aside active time, and they also offer a weekly gymnastics class, a dance/movement class and a “sports fundamentals” class, all of which we opt-in for. Thanks for the great info.
