My little feet are so worn out!!
I tried wearing my Kenneth Cole comfy mary jane shoes today to see if a fancier brand would give me better support. Well 10AM – 4PM on my feet and I don’t think any shoes could have helped!!
I need some dressy work shoes ASAP. I hear Dansko’s the way to go? I want mary jane style, preferably with a tiny heel. Anyone have any awesome 10 hour day shoe recs!?
Have I mentioned that the hospital parking garage is a good half mile walk to my building!? By the time I got to my car this afternoon I was questioning whether or not a run was even possible. But a short and sweet 15 minute commute (LOVING MY COMMUTE!) and some comfy tennis shoes were all I needed for a revival
I had a taste of something AMAZING when I got home. More details tomorrow!
I also had my Alliebar on my ride home. FYI, I didn’t get a chance to eat my orange at lunch cause I had to get back to work quickly (we were doing 2 days in 1!) so I saved him for tomorrow’s lunchbox.
I decided to do all of my busy work when I got home and push back my run a bit since I had a walk date scheduled with Laura.
By 6:00 I headed out for 5 beautiful sunny hot miles.
You know, ever since my test half marathon my legs have NOT wanted to run swiftly!! I’m not sure if I just needed a really long recovery or if it’s the walking around NYC and my new pitter patter friendly job, but I just don’t have the energy in my legs. This run was H.A.R.D. I wanted to go fast to prove to myself it was still possible in preparation for my RACE this Saturday. Perhaps also the pollen and heat because my lungs were burning during the first mile!
Splits: It Is Possible
- 8:44
- 8:51
- 8:45
- 8:51
- 8:46
Not sure I could have ran much further at that pace!
I ended my run with a 1.2 mile walk with Laura while we caught up a bit. It’s so fun to play outside on nice days like this.
Once home, I praised Matt for taking dinner under his wing and making a cold peanut soba noodle salad.
Prepare separately and toss together:
- 1 box of soba [buckwheat] noodles
- 1 head bok choy
- 1 pint mushrooms
- 2 small heads broccoli
- 1 serving of Clean Food‘s peanut sauce (made with pumpkin seed butter I had on hand instead – sorry I can’t publish the recipe! But it was a simple blend of nut butter, milk, maple, soy sauce, etc)
Serve warm or chilled.
By the time I had finished my workout and showered, the sun had set and Matt had already eaten his portion and was up in bed. We’re going to do more cold salads for dinner so we can eat when it’s convenient for both of our different schedules.
It was nearly 8PM and I wasn’t really that hungry! I went up to chat with Matt for a few and somehow finagled a leg massage out of him! Felt so good on my tired leggins.
I settled down to snuggle with my Buddha bowl instead!
And made myself a mocktail out of soda water, Simply Orange and POM
Chop stix! Got these at World Market years ago –
I served myself a nice portion complete with cilantro and red pepper flakes –
Snuggled up with my bowl while watching GOSSIP GIRL on the couch!!
After dinner I wanted a little chocolatey something and remembered these cocoa rocks Gena gave me!
They are 100% cacao and are really bitter! Not sweet at all. Made by Viva Pura, they’re called “cacao paste.” More info here!!
I decided to try melting and mixing with some coconut butter, which I found is now like buttercream at room temperature now that summer is here! The mix was quite bitter – but it was divine with a sweet Biscoff cookie!!
I gotta try some more ideas!!
Happy Birthday VeggieGirl!!!
Tomorrow I have chart note training from 8-lunchtime at a different location and then am back at Rehab in the afternoon. Off to bed!
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I have Merrills and I love them. Claks are super comfy too, and they make some REALLY cute shoes 🙂

Borne (sp?) shoes.
Anything by them.

Great run girl!! Oh the cute blue bowl is back again!! LOVE IT
Janelle says
Love the look of that Buddha bowl! I love to “snuggle” with a cup of coffee or tea, and how fun to be able to do the same with morning oats or dinner.
Dansko shoes are the way to go for long days – expensive, but SO worth it when you have to be on your feet all day!
Pat Kilmain says
Danskos are great! And the Mary Jane ones are sooo cute. I also have some Keens that are good for long periods of standing, but they’re flatter than the Danskos. I think the heels on the Danskos help (and make you pant legs hang right 🙂 )

You have me wondering what that something amazing is! I see chia seeds…
Sarah @ THE FOODIE DIARIES says
omg those chopstix are BEAUTIFUL! i want them! and that bowl! and maybe your soba noodles, too 🙂
Courtney says
Yep, Danskos are the way to go! I am a teacher by day and massage therapist by afternoon, so I am on my feet A LOT. I have these Mary Jane style: http://www.zappos.com/dansko-marcelle-black-cabrio (Zappos is awesome BTW, but dor Dansko’s trying them on in person are a MUST. All of them fit differently because of how they are made!! Need to try on a bunch to see what works for you!), anyways I have those and I love them! Wear them with a skirt at school and change into pants for my other job!
Cute AND sensible!! And they have lasted me 10-12 hours each day without ANY pain!
katey says
I know these aren’t fancy shoes ( I think they make more professional looking shoes now) but the skecher shape ups are THE MOST comfortable shoes I have ever worn. I work in retail and I’m on my feet for up to 8 hours.. My doctor recommend them for their arch support. Your feet/ legs will be very sore the first couple times you wear them.. but after that they don’t hurt anymore. I wear them ALL day and my back, hips, and feet DO NOT hurt like they used to! I didn’t even get them for “shaping up” (I honestly haven’t even noticed a difference) but they are comfy! They aren’t the prettiest shoes.. but they are SOOOO COMFY 10/10!!
reeves thompson says
I teach—so I am on my feet 7:30-4 most days…I love, love, love dansko shoes!
I have several pairs…I have these mary jane shoes…love them!!!!

they are worth every single penny!!! and…they are great for lower back pain too!
shannon says
I’m a nurse so I’ve spent many a 12 hour shift on my footsies and Danskos really are the way to go. They make some really cute mary jane styles, too. Definitely worth the cost.
Heather (runningwithsass) says
you beast! way to run!
Carly says
Dansko’s are 100% the best! I’m a teacher and on my feet all day, no problems with foot pain. I NEVER wear heals anymore after discovering these babies. I got some at great prices at Nordstrom Rack if you have one of those 🙂
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
i love that bowl!! Did you mention where you got it in a previous post?
Do you mind sharing where you got it?
So glad your clinical is going well 🙂
Kath says
It’s specially made and coming to OpenSky soon!

When I was a teacher – standing 8am – 5:30pm, literally, we were not allowed to sit – I wore a lot of flats from Clark. They are sturdy and have good support. Some of their styles are a bit old lady but if you sort through they have some adorable ones as well.
Run Sarah says
I love soba noodles, I can’t wait to try this recipe! I highly highly reccomend Clarks. My feet are generally uncomfortable in ANY shoes but Clarks have a bit of a heel, have Mary Jane styles, and I can be on my feet for the majority of a 30 hour call shift and still they aren’t sore!! Worth every penny.
erika says
I heart KEENS! They are sooo comfy. Merrels are pretty great too. Im a Physician Assistant and am on my feet all day everyday!
Lydia says
Hey, Kath,
I work as a PA in a hospital and am on my feet all day. I agree w/ the Dansko’s for sure. They’re expensive but last forever. You can get basic black and brown to match with almost everything. I also think Bandolino makes cuter shoes that are comfortable and can be worn for 10+hours. I like their flats with dressy pants. Sometimes LLBean has Mary Jane style for cheaper. I know they have a winter style that’s wool and cushy on the inside.
By the way, I love our nutritionists/RD’s and rely on them a lot for guidance w/ patients who are hypoalbuminemic, on TPN or with PEGs. Good luck! I’m sure you’re great!!
Lydia
Tasha says
Honestly, I’ve heard Cole Haan makes the best dress shoes. However, they are a tad on the expensive side-probabbly ~200+ for a solid colored pair
Jil says
Love the eats – that salad sounds amazing! Glad everything is going well with clinical!!
Laura @ youngDCliving says
I wore Natural Soul by Naturalizer flats when I was working as a hospital volunteer last summer–roughly 6 hours on feet. They were really nice! They’re also not that expensive either. They have a nice memory-foam-ish sole. Hope this helps! 🙂
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
Such a cute little bowl!
I hope you find shoes that are comfy. They are key.
Lana says
Borne, Clarks, or Doc Martins.
I’m on my feet all day.
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Congrats on those great splits!! Dansko clogs are AWESOME, I wore them while waitressing…the only downside is that they look super clunky and silly with bare legs (my boss told me not to wear them with shorts once, haha!) I swear by my Sperrys- yes, the boat shoes!! They make styles other than the Topsider, and they’re super comfy!
Thanks for the response about the toile placemats- I’m going to see if I can find any from last season online!!
Hangry Pants says
I second the love of Dansko. They’re the only shoes that I can wear and not want to cut my feet off after a day of teaching. I only wear them with long pants though.
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
What a great salad idea, I’m going to steal that one. I love Soba noodles and haven’t had them in a while. I love them mixed with tofu and veggies. I also want to check out the clean food book.
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Oh and your legs, calf’s, and feet will get used to standing for such long periods of time. Dansko’s are awesome.
Angie says
I second this. Your legs get used to standing no matter what shoes you wear.
Claire says
I got some Dansko’s but was not properly instructed on how they should fit (the ones I got were SUPPOSED to feel big) so mine were too small and I could not wear them. Unfortunately, I had worn them 2-3 times, so I couldn’t take them back. Had to sell them to someone else for a slightly lower price. Oh, well! However, I know that TONS of other residents have them and LOVE them. I, personally, love my Merrils! They are looser on your foot but with good support, which I recently read MAY be better on your knees because it allows more of a natural motion of the foot than the Danskos do. Hope you enjoy the rest of your rotations…we are SO thankful for our nutritionists at the children’s hospital where I work!
Christina says
Geox shoes are super comfy!
klm says
FANTASTIC blue bowl cup amazing thing!! Penny sends you KISSES!!
Cara says
I used to wear Dansko’s while waitressing (a.k.a. on my feet and RUNNING around the restaurant for hours on end!), and they worked wonders! Highly recommend. Not the most attractive looking things, though…but if you wear pants, it’s hard to tell!
Wendy says
I’ll be reading the comments regarding comfy dress shoes – I’m in need of some, too, since I’ll hopefully be teaching full-time in the fall. I tried Danskos but they felt really huge and clunky on my size 10 feet. And I couldn’t stand the way they “flopped” on my feet. I have a pair of Clarks mary janes that I like pretty well, but I think are sorta old-ladyish. I want to find dress shoes that are comfy, supportive, and stylish! Is there such a thing?
Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow says
Dansko’s are by far the BEST shoes I have ever worn. When I was experiencing chronic back pain, they were the only shoes that allowed me to still go about my day and stand when I was teaching elementary school.
Even though they have a clog style heel they are fabulous for the feet!
Jenn says
I’m a nurse and regularly work 14hr days. Danskos are expensive, but SOOOO worth it! They last forever, and my feet & back hardly ever hurt after work anymore. And they have mary jane style with a heel… so I think you’re covered!
Kim says
I’m a clinical dietitian and I’m always running around the hospital too. I wear Clark’s, Aerosoles, Sketcher’s flats and Bass shoes. I also have some Nine West pumps that are ok but not comfy enough for daily use. Look in the comfortable dress shoe section at Macy’s or other department stores. They aren’t as cute as some of the heals I see other dietitians wear, but my feet are used to sneakers so I can’t handle those all day!
Brooke says
i highly recommend the cole haan/nike collaboration shoes. i live in sneakers but when i need to dress up i always reach for these. they have a special cushioning to provide extra comfort for the foot…like a sneaker. they are a little pricier but well worth it especially since mine have lasted for so long and taken quite a beating! here’s the link to the collection!

I worked as a cocktail waitress for over a year (read: Spent 8 hours in 2 in heels on concrete) and the only advice I have is 1. Eventually your feet will adjust, but until they do 2. take a 2 liter bottle and fill it with water and pop it in the freezer after work roll your feet on it and 3. waitress non-slip heels, I can’t remember the exact brand, are ugly as heck, but are as comfortable as you can get. 🙂 Hope it helps.
Sarah says
While these are not SUPER dressy, as a waitress who has to wear black not sneakers as apart of my uniform, I found Croc mary janes and they literally changed my life…seriously. Even when working long, hard, physically demanding hours in sneakers, my feet would ache at the end of the night…but with my crocs, I have not even a twinge or pain or a late-night ache. I HIGHLY recommend them, and they are much cuter than regular style Crocs.
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
I’m really curious to see what you find for shoes. I’m in the market for ones myself that are comfy AND dressy.
That noodle salad sounds AMAZING!
Marie R says
Definitely Joseph Siebel: http://www.zappos.com/josef-seibel or Naot: http://www.zappos.com/naot-footwear I used to be hooked on Danskos but could never go back after these wearing these two brands. Both have insoles that contour to your foot after wear.
Gena says
I vote melt the chocolate into oats or oat bran — as long as there are other sweet toppings involved, so it all gets melty and mixy 🙂
Jenn says
I worked in retail for several years during college, and besides having high quality comfy shoes, what really helped me was to bring a second pair of shoes and socks with me and change during my lunch break. It just refreshes your feet!
Kate says
I worked at target one summer and I wore the same pair of borns daily. They are awesome but a little pricey, but more stylish than danskos, I think! Good luck, your legs will adjust quick!
Mag says
Danskos all the way. I’m a bartender and I work shifts that go as long as 14 hours and my feet never hurt. AND my feet don’t sweat in them at all.
Liz says
I have had a lot of luck with www.shoesforcrews.com. They are designed for resturant employess so are usually great for being on your feet all day. They have a variety of styles, are affordable, and mine have lasted a long time. They are also slip resistant; I wear mine on icy winter days.
jess says
Recent fan of your blog and I’ve begun to look forward to reading it at lunch as an incentive to stop, eat, breathe. I’m compelled to comment because I HIGHLY recommend Dansko. I teach culinary arts to career tech high school students AND am the executive chef of our school food service operation. I’m on my feet for at least eight hours a day and I have worn the same pair of dansko mary janes for three years straight — EVERY DAY. My feet and legs are never tired and I have plenty of energy to run at least three miles after work each day.
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
The cold salad sounds delicious! and I LOVE that bowl, too cute!!!
Christina says
I recommend Naturalizers! I hate uncomfortable shoes but these don’t bother me at all.
Kate Z. says
Hey Kath, I’m a medical resident and I can definitely vouch for Danskos which have been comfy through even my longest 30+ hour shifts! The traditional clog is what I have and I love them! Not the cutest, but sometimes you just gotta go for comfort. Definitely try on as each pair is hand made and fits differently. The heel should be able to slide in and out loosely which may seem weird at first but it’s all part of the comfiness!
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
Whatcha talking about, girlie? Those are awesome splits! Don’t fret – your strong legs will kick butt!
Sarah says
My advice is to not wear the same pair of shoes every day or even in a row. its really bad for your feet. so whatever shoes you get make sure you get a couple different ones to rotate.
:o)
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I drink Simply Orange everyday – I must try it with pom!
kathy krafsig says
my shifts are 12-13 hours in the hospital & Danskos are the way to go! i suggest trying them on in the store though… they all fit a little differently, & if yo have a hospital ID most uniform stores near that given hospital will have a discount.
kristin p says
Dansko’s ALL. THE. WAY. Are they the prettiest shoes on the planet? No. Are they the least expensive shoes around. No. Do they keep you functional after 14+ hours standing/walking on hard surfaces. HELL YES. I broke down and bought these several years ago when I was managing a coffee shop in Seattle in undergrad. I had to work from 4am to 6pm regularly and my back and feet were killing me. The day after a shift I would cry at the idea of having to stand again because my feet hurt soooo badly. I sucked up the ugly and bought a pair of dansko’s and haven’t looked back. They are solid and comfortable and keep me functional no matter how long I have to be on my feet. Plus they last forever and a year. I’ve been wearing them 4-6 days a week for seven years and am on pair #3. Three pairs of shoes in seven years is pretty impressive, no? 🙂 Kristin
Heather says
Born, Crocs and Clarks are all great shoes when you are on your feet all day!
Great run! Love cold salads for dinner on a warm night.
Enjoy your internship tomorrow!
Aria says
My feet are too narrow for Dansko. :(. But they do seem to be the standard RD shoes! Try Cole haan Nike air, geox or kenneth Cole gentle souls.
Lauren says
I’m an attorney so I’m always on the look out for professional and cute looking shoes that I can walk in all day. During law school I worked in a courthouse which required me to take the stairs on a daily basis. In terms of comfort and style Cole Haan’s Nike Air line is by far the best out there. Unfortunately at close to $250 a pair, they are quite expensive. Last season I bought these cute Naturalizer Mary Janes (called the beacon.) http://www.zappos.com/naturalizer-beacon-oxford-brown-leather-shiny
I’ve loved wearing these shoes and they look great with both dresses and pants. The low heel is the perfect height and the sole has extra cushion for all day wearability. I ordered two sizes from Zappos, kept the one that fit and sent the other back. With free shipping both ways, it’s a win win situation.
Meg @ Be Fit Be Full says
I have a pair of Dansko clogs and like most people who commented, I highly recommend them! They are aren’t the cutest looking pair of shoes but they sure are comfy!
Pamela says
those noodles look amazing! I have worked in hospitals/healthcare for over 10 years – Danskos all the way – all day, everyday. Love them!

Danskos are definitely the way to go. Comfortable, stylish and very professional!

I am a teacher and HATE uncomfortable shoes! I have tried most of them out there and finally found the perfect kind… Clarks Unstructured! I have these http://clarks.zappos.com/n/p/dp/54531813/c/3.html and my mom who works on her feet all day has these : http://clarks.zappos.com/n/p/dp/30405091/c/7.html
You should really check out the other shoes in that Unstructured Collection, they have some REALLY cute maryjane type shoes!!! Hope you like! 🙂
Wendy says
Yes, this is the same line that I wear for teaching. I have these, but it looks like they’re being discontinued: http://www.zappos.com/product/7414531/color/492

I have two pairs of Merrill Mary Janes that I wore to an 8-hours-of-standing job for a little over a year. They were great, and I’ll definitely replace them with Merrills when they wear out. (They still seem to have quite a bit of life left in them after two years, though!)
Ginna says
Kath- u HAVE to invest in some danskos. Nordstroms always carries them and what I love is you can return if they dont end up fitting right. I am a Nurse Practitioner and was a bedside nurse before and these are the only shoes that last all day. I have two pairs of the clogs and love them. They still look brand new after 5 years! I even took a pair to Europe with me this past December and we walked everywhere. If you do decide to get them make sure you try on different shoes in the same size. They are european sizes so I went up in my size and each shoe is hand made so they all can fit differently. Good luck with your rotation!
Roxana says
BCBG has really hott and unnaturally comfortable shoes for a [relatively] cheap price, depending on where you get them. If you’re going for a shoe with a heel, try to get one that covers the top of the foot with wide[r] straps than Mary Janes. That way your feet won’t do as much adjustment work in them. In general, the more coverage on the top of top of the foot, the more comfortable your foot will be. Try to get a shoe with a padded strap so they don’t dig into your feet. Cheaper brands don’t tend to have the padding, but my BCBGs do. I was walking in these heels quite a bit and they were so comfy I was able to go out and party most nights of the week in the same heels!
BCBG might not be what you’re stylistically going after for work shoes, but you should check em out in case you don’t find something (or want something to wear after work!)
good luck!
kim says
aerosoles!
carin says
i can echo that danskos are absolutely worth it. i’ve been in medical school for three years and still have my original pair (so the investment is worth it) ,and after spending ten hours in ONE surgery my back didn’t hurt. that’s the only shoe that will do that.
i also have a cute pair of ecco flats that i wear for days on the floor when i’m up and down a lot and they’re very comfy, but if i know i’m going to be standing for 10-12 hrs in surgery, i ALWAYS wear my danskos.
Kelly says
I would definitely recommend Dansko’s. As a sufferer of chronic back, hip and knee pain, they are the only things that keep me going during my 3 12hour shifts in a row at the hospital. They all fit differently, as they are each hand made. Also, the first couple of wears take some getting used to, but then they feel like nothing else you have ever worn!
Also, switching up your shoes day to day will help until you get used to being on your feet so much. Good Luck!
Amanda says
I agree Danskos are the way to go. I have tried all different kinds of shoes as a nurse at the hospital but I feel the best wearing these shoes! Hope your feet start feeling better!
emlod10 says
wear teds (compression socks…don’t want varicose veins) and danskos! they have cute mary janes that have a heel (i love them b/c they make me feel so tall at work!)
Elizabeth says
First of all I have to say that I LOVE your blog :). Secondly, I have to comment on your shoe/standing on your feet all day comfort issue. No matter what, it’s not pleasant to be on your feet all day long. However you CAN make some small changes to help. I have not tried Danskos, I work in the running industry and can spend all day in workout clothes and running shoes if I choose. Have you ever heard of Superfeet? Check out their dress shoe insole. I put those bad boys in most of my dress shoes and I am SOOOO much more comfortable with them in there. Here is a link to what I am referring to http://superfeet.com/store/Women_s_3_4.aspx and they carry them at REI, so if you have an REI near you then stop on in and check them out. Hope you can figure out a way to have happy feet! We need our feet to be happy :).
Carrie (Love Healthy Living) says
You definitely gotta get some Dansko clogs. Just don’t get white or people will think you’re a nurse! 🙂 J/K, I love nurses.
Emmalinda says
I agree that Danskos or Keens are the way to go. I have a pair of each. My Keens are old and scuffed, but they are as structurally sound as the day I bought them, 3 years ago. I recommend Dankos with dress pants b/c they have a little more height–I can’t find the link to the pair I have, but they are a little more streamlined than the traditional Dansko clog.
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
At one of my summer jobs, I worked at a baseball stadium. It was a half mile walk, at midnight, alone, with homeless people and drunks everywhere. Worst time of my life. I most definitely did not go back to that! Plus I had to PAY lots of monies every time! grawr.
Katrina says
Danskos are the only way to go for me. I’m a teacher and I ‘m on my feet all day. I also run a lot so I must take care of my feet. I bought my first pair 2 years ago and they are like brand new still. Perfect for me and totally worth the money. Several teacher friends told me about them and most had theirs for at least 3 years and they still wore them daily.
Fallon says
I’ve heard Aerosoles are great working shoes for long hours and constantly being on your feet.
I’ve been in the mood for a cold soba stir fry salad and yours looks so delicious. The dressing sounds divine.

Kath, I actually love any of the Clarks dress shoes. They are comfy and generally speaking, cute. The Sofft brand is good too.

I know you have a ton of comments to read through, and I barely comment, but I have to praise my newly purchased Danskos. I have/had Achilles Tendinitis really bad and Danskos clogs (red, funky ones) have totally saved my Achilles. In addition, I walk at least round trip 3 miles to work (not including trips to the gym, grocery store, friends’ places, etc) and I desperately need comfy, supportive, and semi-fashionable shoes. Granted Danskos aren’t the trendiest thing for a city girl, but for my 9-5 life they work like a charm. They took a few days to really break in, but now I am in love with my pair. Also, each shoe is hand made (and the date they were made is printed inside the clog). Ok, tribute to Danskos is over. Try a pair out!

mmmmm love soba noodles!!!
Cyclist Kate says
Danskos!!! I have three pairs and even after working an 8 hour day on my feet, no pain whatsoever. Yeah, they’re expensive, but I”ve had a couple of my pairs for three+ years, and after a little beeswax rub, they look like new. Love ’em. Also, there are some cute Mary Jane ones. They looked kinda clunky to me at first, but I’ve gotten used to them.
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
that noodle dish sounds perfect…i LOVE umami!! i’m not sure if you’d like them or not, but when i had to work 9-10 hour days at work on my feet I really like shoes from the Naturalizer. maybe they just fit my feet better than most, but they always did the trick!
sassy molassy says
Kath, I have to say that while Danskos aren’t the cutest work shoes, they are comfy enough to wear all day without feeling super painful. They also have some cute mary jane styles. That noodle salad looks good too…yum.

Aerosoles make fabulous shoes too. I bought two Mary Jane styles, both with slight wedge heels, at their store in NYC a couple years ago and they are still going strong. I wore them for months of restaurant work and in my current job as well. I’ve bought other pairs and they are equally fantastic! Good luck shoe hunting – that’s a fun job!
Rochelle says
Wow, 80+ comments! Not sure if you’ll make it to this one… 😉 I sure hope you do!
I highly recommend Earth shoes! They are amazing!! They come in Maryjane style but no heel! Why? They have a negative heel technology, anatomic arch support, and biofoam cushioning. All of which support the foot and shift the weight to the heel… A perfect formula for one who spends most of their days bustling to n’ fro!!!

you should try making those peanut noodles with nuttzo – i did a while ago and it was GREAT, b/c it’s a nice salty nut butter.

Is it some sort of chia-nut butter spread or pudding?!
It sounds like a good idea to start with a slightly “slower” rotation – you can really get the feel of things before you start running the joint 😛

Those shoes are cute! But yeah, I can totally see why your feet would hurt after all that time standing!
That dinner looks divine 🙂

Definitely Danskos. I bought a pair when I was in pharmacy school on clinicals and they were the only thing that got me through 10-12 hour days 5 days a week. I still wear them on the job now…

Love that dinner!
I found my legs took a good week and a half to recover after my first half – but after the 2nd the recovery time was waaaay quicker, so you should be fine after the real thing 🙂 Just don’t push it this week and let them rest 🙂

for 10 hour days i wear heels. or platforms 🙂 3-4″ usually. i am a foot masochist!
for longer shifts and with scrubs i do break out some dansko like shoes that i have from aldo. they are quite comfy! for me, comfier than actual danskos (which i used to have but didn’t like). shop around – i don’t think danskos are the end all/be all of good work shoes! (even for the hosp).

You could always try shoe inserts before investing in an expensive pair of shoes, especially if you’re only really needing them for a few months. I’ve heard they work wonders, and I think you can get them at many shoe stores. Also, I bet it won’t be so bad after a few more days 🙂

Shoe rec: I dont know if they have a mary jane style but ana tech’s… http://www.ana-techshoes.com/ . Similar to danskos but IMO more comfy. I used to work on my feet for 14-18 hours a day working with livestock and my feet always felt great. The pair I have right now are 10 years old and still look and feel wonderful.

Good morning! I am so glad you had another great day at your internship. It sounds so interesting and rewarding. You packed a lot into the afternoon/evening! Way to go on the run – you had great splits for your run. I don’t know much about running, but I would say to listen to your body, take it easy this week, and you should be fine this weekend. Hope you have a great Wednesday!

danskos are good–i wear them about half the time at work, but they are actually really heavy and can start to bother my ankles (i also tend to roll my ankles in them when i am in a rush), so i alternate with other shoes.
but, the thing that makes the biggest difference for me in terms of my feet feeling tired at the end of the day is (knee high) support stockings. such a difference! my feet feel better and i feel less wiped out overall.

Cole Haan Nike Air flats. They are pricey, but definitely the way to go, One DI to the next ;).

Thank you guys SO MUCH for all the recommendations!!!!!!!!!!!

That soba noodle salad looks like such a clean and refreshing dinner. I’ll have to look up that peanut sauce recipe, I love that book!
It sounds like your legs are a bit fatigued. Perhaps it’s a combination of all the standing at work, city walking, and your test half-marathon? Despite having tired legs, your splits are very impressive!

Kath…my podiatrist recommends Aravon shoes (they are made by New Balance). I have a pair, they look great and feel even better. They are pricey, but totally worth it!

I wore Dansko’s when recovering from a broken foot 5 years ago and have never looked back. On my feet all day long, and they NEVER get sore any more! The best part is that I still wear all the ones I bought 5 years ago because they never wear out.

I’m a pharmacist and work 12 hour shifts w/o sitting down, and Danskos have saved me! Even though they are not that cute, they look okay w/ pants. They are not “soft” shoes by no means, but they are very supportive. And they make me feel tall! Love your turqoise blue bowl!

I rock a pair of Mudd wedges that I walk around in constantly. They are similar to these: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41CDxmMAerL._AA280_.jpg I work on a college campus and they’re the only thing I can walk around in all day without my my feet hurting.

I understand being on your feet all day (I am a teacher). For dress clothes, I wear mary jane Sketchers and love them! I also have feet issues like yourself, so comfort is key and nothing tight on the toe. Otherwise, you will see me in tennis shoes!

Hey Kath! I have searched and search for comfortable heels/dress shoes. Dansko is a great brand, but a bit on the clunky side, so it is harder to dress them up. My ultimate brand is Cole Haan, they are expensive, but they are made with Nike technology, so they are extremely kind to the feet. I usually get them at the outlets, when they are on 50% off – so only about $95. Another brand that is great is Aerosoles!

I just got a pair of Eastlands – mary janes, with a very smaller heel. I think the shoe model was called Galileo? Anyway, they did well through a conference I had to work – walking everywhere and on my feet all day presenting and working in the exhibit hall!
Jess says
Oh, and I tried Danskos once and hated them – ended up returning them! So just know that not everyone loves them!

Me, too!

Kath –
I love my Danskos. I pretty much only wear Dansko clogs and mary janes during the winter and in the summer I have two pairs of sandle like Danksos that never leave my feet. I also love Privos. I’m on my feet a lot, and they never hurt in these shoes. Good luck!

Keen. Best shoes ever: last forever, super comfy & the never smell.

For cute and comfortable – Borne has been great for my on-the-narrow-side feet. I walk 2+ miles in the course of my daily commute and these have been great. I got an adorable mary jane style (in red) last August and wearing daily, have worn them out. Now, I am waiting for a cute slip-on flat with a flower.

aerosoles have awesome wedge shoes that are SO cute and yet you feel comfortable all day ( plus all night dancing! ) http://www.aerosoles.com/
but Geox is my favorite brand when it comes to comfy shoes. Each of my family member have a pair! They are great and the baller flats look so trendy!
i’m not sure if they sell them in the US but it’s huge in Europe.
Kristina says
You’ve gotten great recommendations already, but I’ll give another plug to Clarks, which have great clogs and can be a bit more dressy than Danskos. I also just LOVE Born shoes which fall into the “comfort shoe” category.
Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
I have Danskos and I LOVE them!! I bought them a year ago because I live in DC and walk everywhere (no car) so I need supportive shoes. They are cute and honestly my feet have never hurt in them. My only complaint is they squeak now when I walk which can be kind of embarrasing! Otherwise I highly reccomend them :).
Jen says
If your looking for dressier shoes that are comfy – try a shoe with a wedge heel – the wedge offers more support and you can find them in cute styles that aren’t too high. If your looking for more functional – the danskos seem to be the way to go.

Just thought I’d let you know that I saw Biscoff cookies in WF for the first time yesterday–and immediately thought of you!

I love my Clarks. It’s my go-to brand now – I’ve actually converted two people in my office over to Clarks.
I think the most important thing though is finding what brand works for you. Clarks works for me but not for my mom. One thing you might try is ordering a few different styles from Zappos.com It’s a great resource for trying on shoes and figuring out what works for you (shipping to you and for a return are free). They also have an incredible return policy – up to 365 days after purchase, which means you can try the shoes on at different times during the day/month since our feet tend to change throughout each day.

I am a nurse and on my feet all day. I wear Dansko (the open back clogs). Love them!! You must try them on before you buy. The sizes are European, I think. Definitely have a sales clerk to assist you with choosing the correct size. Also, they need a few days to get broken in. They last forever.
Happy shopping!

Hi Kath! I’ve just discovered all of your great info on your website/blog today and am so excited! Definitely have to explore more over the days to come.
I wanted to chime in on the shoe recommendations because I have a hard time finding shoes. I have a high arch, wide feet and I adore cute shoes. Many of the brands previously recommended haven’t worked for me in the past so I have fallen for Sofft brand for my dressy work shoes. Love them love them love them. They have great padding and fit my feet. These might work for you. http://www.zappos.com/sofft-saffron-black-velvet-sheep-nappa-patent
For my not as cute shoes, I love Munro American – comfy comfy comfy. I wish they were a little cuter but they feel great all day.
Good luck!

Just to add to the chorus of shoe-suggestions: Camper shoes are great. I wear the Ariadnas all day on some days and it doesn’t even feel like I’m wearing heels. http://shop.camper.com/producto.xhtml?option=21227-005&lng=en

Have you tried speculoos spread? It’s made of ground biscoff cookies. A.Ma.Zing.
