I wrapped up my 8 page oatmeal experiement report around 11am and couldn’t wait to get outside! I decided I had the energy and time to go to the shady greenway to run today, so I set out on a biking + running adventure.
Here’s the Garmin report! (Although I forgot to turn it on on the first few minutes of both bike legs, so add 5 mins!)
- Total distance: 10.64 mi
- Total time: 1:21
- Avg. pace: 7:39/mi (run but that doesn’t seem right?)
- Avg. speed: 7.8 mph (bike, which includes waiting at stoplights)
- Max speed: 17.4 mph (bike)
- Total kcal: 720 (I think this is too high b/c the running is based on distance. 600-650 is probably more accurate)
- Avg. heart rate: 147
- Max heart rate: 186
- Total ascent: 1583 ft
- Total descent: 1638 ft
But the important part was the run! I watched my pace and it was FUN! I did 2.5 miles out and back on the greenway. Here were the miles:
- Mile 1: 8:40
- Mile 2: 8:37
- Mile 3: 8:34
- Mile 4: 8:37
- Mile 5: 8:06
Notice how much faster I run on flat ground!! Last week’s stats were in a neighborhood with hills, but this was pretty flat.
When I was just approaching the final mile, the Pirates Of The Caribbean theme came on my iPod (which I just put music back on for the first time since Africa!). I was totally inspired to run fast because I LOVE that music and booked it all the way back – hence the faster mile 5 pace.
Then I came home and made the BEST LUNCH!!
Two poached eggs on top of a Flax Oat Bran bun with arugula.
After seeing Bites + Bowl’s poached egg last week I had it in the back of my mind to make for lunch. I checked with Mr. Breakfast for a touch up on how to poach. That would be dill on top.
Some bright orangey carrots
And a bowl with about 1/3 cup yogurt with half a cup mango and a sprinkle AgavePlus granola
So perfectly filling and full of a variety of textures.
I won another contest! Danica’s Daily’s Annie’s Naturals. Sweet!
I’m off to Target to get MORE things that I forgot last week, including a Swiffer Sweeper. If Hyper Homemaker recommends it, it must be good!
Erika says
Delicious lunch Kath! I haven’t had poached eggs before…what is the difference between this and ‘over easy’?
Enjoy the beautiful day!!

Weekly Bite says
Great job getting the oatmeal paper done!!
I love poached eggs!! Lunch looks delish 🙂
Kath says
Erika ,
I have no idea! These are simmered…
Moran (The Running Addict) says
Wow I LOVE the Garmin’s breakdown! So much better than my Polar.
Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
You have the best luck with contests!!
Poached eggs are cooked in water, where as an “over easy” egg is fried, then flipped over (get it) briefly to cook the other side.
jenna says
I’m not a huge fan of runny egg yolks but your lunch looks amazingly colorful!! 🙂
Your run sounds so refreshing.
haya says
yum!
speaking of contests, have you heard from the sweet potato people yet?
Marissa says
Yum! I love adding toppings to arugula!
Sharon says
Eggs look great!
zestycook says
Kath, I love the poached eggs! Looks great.
To answer Erica’s question, over easy eggs are normally pan fried and flipped once to keep the yolk soft where as poached eggs are cracked in water and cooked just until the egg white forms.
Have fun at Target
Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
Mmmm love those runny yolks! Pirates music sounds VERY inspiring!!
Sarah says
I’ve never had poached eggs before. They scare me a little, haha! Yours look beautiful though!
Shannon (The Daily Balance) says

i LOVE all the music from the Pirates movies, and poached eggs! What a great meal.
Kristilyn says
Your lunch looks delicious!
Thanks for the recommendation on the Pirates music … I’m always looking for music to add to my running mix. (For the record, Muse has some GREAT songs for running!)
I’m happy you like your Garmin. 🙂
Angie says
Beautiful lunch! And the Swiffer is the bomb!
Vanessa says
I am still jealous of the Garmin.
Gena says
Congrats on a satisfying run — and a pretty lunch! — my dear! xo
Leah @ Simply Fabulous Now says
What a photogenic lunch!!!!!
Just about as good as mine… (haha…. kidding :))
Great workout!!
Jen says
Mmm, poached eggs. *filing away for lunch very soon*
I see you won the Roasted Red Pepper Vinaigrette from Annie’s – so good! I love that stuff and for 70 cal for 2 tbsp, I consume quite a bit of it. It single-handedly cured me of creamy dressings like ranch and bleu cheese.
megan says
i’ve never had poached eggs, but i love over easy eggs on toast and this looks similar. yum, i think i might have that for dinner tonight! 🙂
Lisa says
Poached egg + cooked spaghetti squash + parmesan = warm gooey happiness.
Christin S says
Wow, that lunch looks so delicious! I think it is smiling at me from the picture (the eggs are the eyes and the carrots are the mouth heehee)
Thanks for posting about the mixmygranola, I am always dissapointed at TJ’s when I try to get premade…I am way too picky! I just went and ordered organic with blueberries, raspberries, blackberries, pistachios, walnuts, almonds, and chocolate chips…I can’t wait for it to arrive!!! 🙂
Melissa says
Where do you find all of these great food contests/giveaways? I love free stuff!
Run Sarah says
I love my swifter sweeper- it’s perfect for pet hair and dust.
Bec says
your poached eggs look perfect, I need to check out that site!
Christina says
Ahh I need a Garmin – didn’t know it gives you all those stats, including speed! Awesome.
Swifter sweepers are great by the way!
kitchenbelle says
The poached eggs over arugula look fantastic!
Danica says
I bet it felt amazing to finish the oatmeal experiment. Great stats on your bike and run! Yeah for contest winnings – can’t wait for you to receive your prizes 🙂
Heather says
Great run Kath! I’m amazed by your times… you definitely keep up a good, steady speed!
Those poached eggs look just about perfect! Thanks for the link on how to make them. I’m going to have to try them out!
A bit off topic, but I was wondering if you still add any salt to your oatmeal in the mornings? I noticed you have it on the ingredient list on the ‘Tribute’ page, but it’s not mentioned on your normal posts.
Thanks!
Danielle says
I love the way your runny eggs look!
Petra says
OMG, does your lunch look good! Yum! Where do you get those buns – I’d like to try them.
jds says
hi kath! do you find the garmin’s calorie count is inaccurate even with the heart rate strap? i just got a garmin but haven’t used the heart rate aspect yet so i’m curious about how you view it. thanks!
fitforfree says
awesome job on the run!!
KB says
Hi Kath! I just wanted to post and let you know how much I love your blog! Yours is one of the first that I ever began reading, and it was bloggers like you that have inspired me to create my very own blog!
Chelsea says
I’ve found that Garmin’s calorie counts are always too high or…higher than Polar at least. Who REALLY knows what calorie count is accurate?
K says
That soundtrack is pretty good!! We both had eggy lunches today – clearly we have great tastes 😉
erin says
i can only hope that an year from now i can be averaging 8 to 9 minute per mile! i’m only on 10 to 11 minute per mile!!!
WendyF says
I love my Garmin for my bike, it was put to the test when we rode from San Diego to San Francisco this fall. Those eggs got me thinking to have a south of the border version tomorrow morning 🙂
Jessica says
I love poached eggs, they look delicious! What a light and healthy lunch 🙂
Sally says
Yummy looking mango!
Jennifer says
Personally, I think it’s kinda eating-disorder-like to be obsessing over the exact amount of cals you burn. And this is coming from personal experience.
Jennifer says
To clarify my aforementioned comment: I understand why Garmins and other instruments are useful for timing runs, I just get suspicious when people monitor the calorie counting.
Jennifer says
And when I say people I am referring to other bloggers as well, not just Kath. Phew, I hope that’s better!
Scoop says
Hey Erika,
I think of ‘over easy’ eggs as being a bit fried on one side and runny on top.
My favorite is by far poached eggs. When I’m lazy and don’t want to bring out my pan, I nuke the eggs in a very shallow dish of water for 20 or so seconds. Yum!
Jennifer says
On another note, how excited are you for Charleston Kath?! I am psyched!
Lindsey (Mrs. LC) says
Yum lunch! Congrats on winning!
Help Meghan Run says
Those pace numbers are inspiring! 🙂
meg says
Awesome run! Congrats on your win!
Kath says
haya ,
Thanks for asking. I didn’t hear from the sweet potato people yet, which means I didn’t win 🙁 They were supposed to make a phone call yesterday to the winner. I’m still happy to have gotten in the finals though!
Heather ,
YES! I just got tired of writing it! You guys have such a keen eye 🙂
Petra ,
They are from Great Harvest. Matt makes them from the leftover dough, so I don’t think many other GH’s make them. Sorry!
jds ,
Someone told me that the HR strap on the Garmin does not affect the calorie count – it is based on distance (because you can use the Garmin without the strap). When I wore it on the elliptical the other day, it said I only burned like 10 calories because I didn’t “move” according to the GPS but my HR was high as normal. Disappointing news to those who want to be accurate, but it’s still a good way to estimate.
KB ,
Thanks!
Chelsea ,
V. true!!
Jennifer,
Shaking in my boots!

that’s too bad! at least you know you have a winner recipe that everyone around the blogworld seems to be making and eating!
Michelle Hisae says
It’s interesting to see what other blogs you follow! Homemaking, huh? 🙂
Adi (oatonomy.com - repaired!) says
Eggs are always best when they’re not eaten at breakfast! I think I know what I’m having for dinner tomorrow night 🙂
Cute napkin!
Erin says
BEE-utiful eggs.
Jess says
I love poached eggs and yours look perfect. I use a microwave poacher. It only cost about $2.
I think Garmin averaged your bike and run stats.
