We were very lucky when we rented this house to inherit a gorgeous bed of strawberries that our landlords [who are gardeners!] started.
They kept telling us “You’re going to have gobloads of strawberries soon!”
I thought..I’ll believe it when I see it. And see it I did!
I went out scavenging for breakfast this morning when I realized there were pops of red hidden in the green
And I came out with a huge bowl of super ripe berries!
I like strawberries just plain, but my favorite way to eat them is when they are cooked. In a pie or cobbler..or buckwheat bake!
So I got my batter on, then my microwave on and came out with an overflowing mini strawberry buckwheat pie
NOTE: Whole eggs work great in baked buckwheats, but microwave versions are best with flax eggs!! The egg took much longer to cook and created too much volume. I’d recommend a flax egg for the microwave. And less strawberries unless you want a mess!

Kayla (Little Miss Healthify) says
You lucky girl! So jealous of your lil strawberry patch! What a perfect way to welcome Summer!
The overflowing buckwheat bake looks delicious! Puts my carrot cake oats this morning to shame! 🙂
Have a great day, Kath!
Lenna says
Wow, fresh strawberries?!:) They aren´t in season in my country yet…but I just love them, they are such a great add to oatmeals, pancakes, smoothies, just everywhere. You are a lucky woman:))
Kate @ NaturaStride says
You are so lucky you have those strawberry plants!!! Super jealous. Jealous, but now inspired to bake something with strawberries this weekend! Have a great Friday 🙂
megan @ whatmegansmaking says
beautiful strawberries! I love to cut them up, sprinkle a little sugar on them, and pour milk over them like cereal! Best snack ever 🙂
Lisa Fine says
That looks great!
Steve and I are lucky too, since the property we live on [we get housing through his work, included], there are raspberry, blueberry, and blackberry bushes. I absolutely love stepping right outside to pick fresh fruit.
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Oh wow, what a great selling point – I don’t think I’d care what the house looked like at alL!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
Look at all of those berries!!! So pretty — and I also love berries in baked goods as well. I just love the texture!
Miranda @ Working Mom Works Out says
I have MAJOR strawberry envy. My plants haven’t produced ONE.SINGLE.BERRY!!
Your breakfast looks good though <- still jealous.
Baking 'n' Books says
Those berries look so real and fresh – definitely NOT like the grocery stores!
What are the buckwheat groats? Does it just add a crunch factor?
Angie @ Musings of a Violet Monkey says
That’s brilliant that you inherited a mini-strawberry patch! I tried to grow a plant last year, and got a few berries off of it, but decided it wasn’t really worth the time or effort. I have an absolutely lovely Farmers Market to go to every Saturday morning, and can pick up delicious local berries (albeit for a price!). And, I can use my gardening space for my crops that produce for more than just a few weeks.
Thanks for the heads up re: the egg and buckwheat bake… I have only tried the bake one time, and it was a pretty major fail for me. I used a whole egg and cooked the bake in the microwave. It was so super spongy and weird… I wasn’t a huge fan. I’d love to try the oven-baked version, but that is not an option during the week! I’ll give the micro version another try with a flax egg. Thanks! 🙂
~
KathEats says
DEFINITELY try it again with flax egg!!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
What a lucky Friday the 13th find! Strawberries are my fav this time of year – I just bought the XL bag of them at the market yesterday.

You luck lady!! I would love to be able to walk outside and pick fresh strawberries 🙂

that’s super nice
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
Do strawberries grow relatively easily, or are they tough to maintain?
KathEats says
I have no idea! They just grew for us because we didn’t plant them
cathyb@brightbakes says
Hi!
I have my own strawberry patch and wouldn’t give it up for the world! 🙂 They are very easy to grow, just a little work to MAINTAIN, due to the fact that they spread via “runners” and the weeds like to really get in there! That being said, I have VERY few problems with weeds since I started cutting them back once they were done bearing, layering the ground around the plants with newspaper, then topping it off with some sort of organic mulch (chopped bark is great) No weeds now 🙂 And recycling too!
cheers,
cathy b.
Amy says
AHHH SO JEALOUS!! Strawberries are in season in NC, but I don’t have my own backyard patch! So lukcy. 🙂 🙂 🙂
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Oooh I’m so jealous of all your strawberries!! I wish I had more space to garden but unfortunately I don’t live in a house with a full-on gardening space. RIght now, I’m just making do with some herbs and trying to keep them alive!! have fun at Body Pump!

Faith @ lovelyascharged says
You’re so lucky – I’ve been dying to plant my own berries because I’m sure it would save me gobs on produce, but unfortunately berry bushes are a no-go in an apartment, haha. They definitely are better warm and gooey too!
Ash @ Good Taste Healthy Me says
omg strawberries are the absolute BEST fruit out there. They’re fantastic as a snack, baked in anything, smoothie form….like I said they’re the best. I went through 2 lbs in one week….I might have a problem.
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says

Beth@naturallyyoursbeth says
This looks so good!! I want to try a buckwheat bake so good…I’ll have to go to the grocery store for the supplies ASAP! Do you all do anything to keep critters out of your strawberry patch?
KathEats says
No, I really know nothing about growing strawberries!
Christine @ Burning It Off says
You are so lucky! They even LOOK better than grocery store strawberries (or maybe that’s just your photography skills 😉 )
Khushboo says
SO jealous! Strawberry season is officially over here in Mumbai :(. Hello mangoes though!
Melissa says
You hit the jackpot moving in there! I wish I lived in a house so I could have a little garden! I’m dying to grow things! Of course, everything I plant seems to die, so maybe it’s for the best. 😉

Amy says

Courtney says
I have a bed of strawberries that just keeps spreading–we don’t have to do anything for them!! I have to admit that fresh strawberries taste SO much better than those bought from a store (no matter what store!)–it sure encourages me to eat seasonally!
PS, I’m a c’ville resident and stumbled upon your blog–love it! And I’m so excited for the bakery to open–I usually make my own bread, but I’m excited to try a few of the bakery’s varieties!
KathEats says
Thanks for reading! Hope to meet you in the bakery soon 🙂
Holly says
Your strawberries look so good! And that buckwheat pie…will have to try that!

Stephanie @ StephSnacks says
Now THAT looks like the right way to start a friday!
Amy says
Lovely! I used to work in a strawberry patch when I was in high school. Nothing’s better than a sun-warmed strawberry fresh from the garden!
Amy Latta says
Lucky.
Just a bit jealous as I nosh on my not-cheap, store-bought strawberries that frequently rot before I get through the package. 🙂
Kim @ Spoonful of Sass says
Oh the joys of heading to the back yard to pick your meal just before you eat it. Love it!
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
My mom and I both want a garden, but I don’t think strawberries can grow in our backyard here in Cali.
I showed my mom your pictures, she loves it. We are both envious of the fresh strawberries while we stare at the frozen ones we have in a bag, lol!
Tessa @ Amazing Asset says
My mom grows strawberries at her house and I always looks forward to seeing and visiting her because she gives me a whole bunch 🙂
They are so fresh, juicy, sweet….mmm I want some NOW
Lucy @ The Sweet Touch says
Aww, this post reminds me of my grandpa. He was quite the gardener and I remember running up and down the rows picking strawberries about this time of year.
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
Gobloads of strawbs?! I’m comin’ over!!
Alaina says
That is so cool that you have strawberries in your backyard! My husband grew up in upstate New York and they used to have wild niagara grapes in their backyard.
Gina @Runningtothekitchen says
Wish I had those in my backyard! Strawberries were 2 lbs for $4 this week so of course I bought them but, they are already going bad!
Silvia Lopez says
I am SO going to do this tomorrow! It is going to be my first time trying this recipe! I am also trying buckwheat groats for the first time!
AShley says
Whoa!! Total overflowage!! That’s never happened with mine, haha. Not sure if I prefer the egg or flax egg for the microwave. I’ve never had it turn out spongy with the egg though, like someone mentioned above. It’s always really muffiny!
Ashley says
[I wasn’t laughing AT you with the “haha”..just thought the overflowage was funny ;)]
Liv @ The Salty n' Sweet says
Oh so lucky!! I would kill for a strawberry patch in my backyard 🙂 My favorite way to eat strawberries is dipped in some warm chocolate…Mmmhmmmm
Karen says
Oh, how I love warm and melty strawberries! I’ve been known to snack on such comfort food. I so wish I had a yard for growing my own berries and greens and flowers and…
Happy Friday!

Allison @ Runs A Latte says
Wow, that bake looks incredible! And you’re so lucky to have your own strawberries! I keep buying them each week, but the organic ones are SUPER expensive!
katie says
your so lucky, thats awesome about the free strawberries! The best I had with that was when I was living on an island for the past few summers, wild blackberries grew everywhere. They were very tart except for a certain week in the summer and all the native islanders knew when to pick them so they were perfect.
Emon says
OMGadddddddddddd. That looks fantastic! 😀
Kaitlyn @ 7 Plates says
Wow, looks delicious!!!
Meg says
The deliciousness of summer runneth over 😀
YUM!
Halley (Blunder Construction) says
Yum… my parents grow strawberries back home, but we never got much of a crop. But wait a tick, I thought you don’t use microwaves?
KathEats says
No, I do. I didn’t have one when we moved in here, but we got one hand-me-down. I use it on occasion
Haleigh says
Those strawberries are bursting with color! When I lived in Sweden, there would be wild strawberries growing in the forests all around me. We would go and pick them, and eat them on the spot. I would often come home with red fingers, hehe.. guilty 🙂
ilovefetacheese says
as a weight lifter, i love your last statement 🙂 It definitely gets addictive!
Ashley @ Feeding Ashley says
Those look delicious! I like strawberries raw, but those cooked ones look fantastic.
Andrea @ The Skinny Chronicles says

Kath – Are there any farmer’s markets on Sunday in Cville? I’m going to be driving through on Sunday and I see there is a big one but it is only on Saturday. HELP!

Lauren says
Oh no!!!! I was afraid of that…Oh well, maybe next time.
Thanks Kath…looking forward to meeting you and trying Great Harvest SOON.
Caroline @ French Ponytail says
These pictures are so gorgeous! We’re growing tomatoes on our little terrace and I keep hoping to see a pop of red poking out one day.
Mastering Public Health (@MasPublicHealth) says
Nice! Whenever we try to grow any produce outdoors like that, animals eat it right away! It happened last summer with corn on the cob. Damn raccoons. Wonder how your strawberries avoided that fate? Enjoy.
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
Lucky you! We tried growing strawberries in our garden when I was younger but we’d only have a small bush or two going. I’d love to have practically a whole garden full of fresh strawberries!
Michelle | GOLD-HEARTED JEWELRY says
It’s so gratifying to eat fruits and veggies from your own garden! I miss my mom’s garden…

I will be over to eat strawberries soon. Very soon. Don’t mind the red faced girl crouched in your yard.
KathEats says
LOL. Eat the ugly ones!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Ahhh I’d KILL for a strawberry patch in my own yard! And that looks delicious! I think the overflow makes it look even more so.
Grace @ Healthy Dreaming says
I grew strawberries when I was little and that does NOT compare with the beautiful harvest YOU had :)! I hope to have a garden some day and pray that I inherited my mom’s green thumb.
Have a GREAT weekend!
Laura @ prettylittlewords says
This. Looks. Amazing.
I am beside myself with jealousy over your strawberry garden!
melissa says
Have to ask how you and matt are dividing the bakery work.every post talks about matt being at the bakery while you run, bike and go to body pump.i know that the blog business is time consuming – you definitely have some obligations.but i have wondered how my husband would handle building an oven while i took a walk with girlfriends.is he getting his chill time too?
KathEats says
The bakery is primarily his business. It’s his passion. I’m helping as much as I can doing the things that I am good at. I think your comment is a little unfair…
Mary Frances says
People who regularly read you blog are in the know. It is just her loss for missing so much. Seems to me that before someone would post a judgmental comment, they would have their facts straight. Kath’s whole blog history remains online. Take the time to go back and read. Even if it is not in real time, it sure is good reading! 🙂 (Well done Kath, and we love to hear all about the bakery and are proud of you and Matt.)
Becky says
Ditto!
M says
Hope Matt takes a bit of time to let off steam/stress of opening a biz is he can-
going for a run or to the gym might help him not overdo it.
I have seem to many people burn out quickly and lose their passion-
hope he takes care of himself.
I think you are balancing things in a good way yourself-your workouts will
help you through these busy times, esp mentally!
Best wishes to you both in each of your passions!
KathEats says
He is laughing and watching Conan right now!
M says
Awesome!
It’s obvious your new biz will be a huge success-
you guys have the dedication part down pat!!
Becky says
Makes sense. It’s amazing, also, how, when someone has a passion for something, it can actually be energizing. When you find what you love to do fitting in with who you are as a person, it makes all the difference.
erica says
omg! i’m so jealous! i’ve always wanted a strawberry patch of my very own. when i was little my grandpa got me a few strawberry plants…but nothing like your garden!!!
Elena @ GagaForGrapefruit says
those strawberries look DELICIOUS! and i’m loving that buckwheat bake recipe! can’t wait to try!
Emma (Namaste Everyday) says

Vanessa says
I made a microwaved buckwheat bake this morning [with the flax egg] and it was fabulous!! I love the texture of the microwaved version 🙂 Jealous of your little strawberry harvest!
Molly @ RDexposed says
Why, yes. I am insanely jealous of you strawberry patch.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
You’re so lucky to have your own strawberry patch! I can’t wait until the berries are ready for picking at the farm where I work. Unfortunately it won’t be for a few more weeks because of all our crappy weather recently. 😛
Heidi - apples under my bed says
beautiful recipe! & how lucky to have those delightful strawberries!
Heidi xo
Becky says
And the very cool thing about those strawberries is that there are no preservatives in them! Strawberries are extrememly porous and absorb (as in “suck in”) anything that is put on them. So, you don’t want to buy anything but organic strawberries, unless you want to inhale “instant chemicals”!
r8chel says
My favorite way to eat a strawberry is just to wash it, cap it, and eat it — but your strawberry buckwheat volcano looks pretty yummy too!
Erin says
Ha! We used to have a strawberry patch in our backyard. Our dog (who died from cancer and we still miss him 6 years later) ALWAYS knew which ones were ripe and he’d run past it and swipe one. He did the same thing with cherry tomatoes. 🙂 Thanks for the memory!
Hannah says
This. Looks. Amazepants. What would you recommend replacing the banana with, if you had to? (They’re to expensive here). More soymilk>
KathEats says
Hmmm. Anything mushy – applesauce, pureed mango, maybe even pureed strawberries, pumpkin
diane says
Yummy! I had to improvise a little….organic buckwheat pancake mix, flax seed, oats, blueberries, regular egg, banana and vanilla soy milk. DELIGHTFUL! It tastes like dessert for breakfast!
melissa says
Okay,it isn’t a judgemental comment.i asked an honest question.i did not say anyone was wrong or that anything was or is unfair.i asked how u and matt balance the workload.i have read the blog for quite some time. i think it is difficult to share a business and difficult to work from home.i work at home and my husband some times feels i have more leisure time.my husband is at work and i some times feel he has more down time because he is away from the kids and responsibilities of the house.this blog is a discussion of balancing a healthy lifestyle and my question pertains to balance.
