I knew this was going to happen.
Yesterday when Mike was here I had 1.5 cups of coffee. I knew it would keep me awake the night before I had to get up early. I was right. I couldn’t fall asleep last night (and it didn’t help that Matt kept thrashing next to me with insomnia as well). Now I’m super sleepy!
But I had a little help from Mr. Programmable!
Repeating the same problem perhaps!? Since switching from French press to coffeemaker, I really have regretted a thing. Some days the coffee isn’t as rich, but most days I am so happy to have this guy on my countertop. Today was one of them! I set him to start brewing at 6:30 and by the time I came down for breakfast the house was smelling like a Folgers commercial!
Insta-Breakfast Mix
- 1 container Siggi’s (so thick!!)
- 2 tbsp TJ’s Peanut Flour (my favorite way to eat this is in yogurt)
- 1/2 banana
- Sprinkles of chia seeds, flax seeds and coconut
- ~1/3 cup homemade crunchy buckwheat granola cereal
- 1 tsp TJs pumpkin butter
I’m off to the Richmond Dietetics Association Fall Conference. I normally love conferences! But I don’t like that I’ll have to spend 2.5 hours in the car. I have a group of blog friends to look forward to meeting tonight!
Not sure of my blog posting timing today, but I’ll peep in to say hello around noon at least
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
Have fun at your conference!!
Yeah, if I drink more than one cup of coffee, or if I have it past about 11:00 in the day, it keeps me up for hours. Ugh.
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
The title of your post totally threw me off 😉 😉
I can’t have any more than 1 cup of coffee or I’m up all hours.
Safe travels to the conference 🙂
Becky says
Am I missing something? I still don’t understand the title!
Kath says
Pee pie is a phrase used as “peek a boo” for babies – or at least that’s how the southern ladies I grew up around used it!!
Kori says
My grandmother used to say it all the time to my twin sister and I. It’s caught on our baby videos. 😉 I loved the title of this post because it reminded me of her. Thank you!
Jenn @ LiveWellFitNow says
Me + 1.5 cups of coffee = no sleep! And the bigger problem is that I LOVE LOVE LOVE coffee. The smell, the taste, everything about it. I usually stick to my 1 cup a day but if I have even 1/2 cup after 3 pm I’m up till 3 am!
Enjoy that conference!
Christine says
I think I can pysche myself into anything — just tell yourself you had decaf, even if you didn’t.
Really I think part of the reason that coffee makes me NOT fall asleep is because I keep thinking about it like “Oh no! I just had coffee, I can’t get to sleep now.” Just put it out of your mind–try not to think about it.
Or you could just have decaf?
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
Ugh, sleepless nights are the worst. I hope you have a great day at your conference regardless!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
Have a fun day at your conference Kath!
Missy says
Have fun at your conference!
Astrid@ http://carfreeinannarbor.blogspot.com/ says
I know what you mean about loving a programmable coffee pot. I had one for about a year before it broke and it wasn’t worth having it fixed. Now I’m back to an inexpensive coffee maker that I load up the night before and switch on when I come down to the kitchen in the morning. By the time I”m done fumbling around for a drink of water and geting breafkast out of the fridge, the coffee is ready. This method of coffee prep isn’t as aroma-rich as a programmable but it beats trying to make coffee in a cold, dark kitchen!
maria @ Chasing the Now says
I guess I am lucky. Coffee never bothers me. Sure, it helps me wake up, but I could also probably go right back to sleep after drinking a cup if I really wanted.
Christie {Honoring Health} says
Sorry I can’t make the meetup tonight and that you didn’t get much sleep. Thank goodness for coffee!
Sarah @ Sarah's Shaping Up says
Have fun at the Conference! 🙂
Courtney (Pancakes & Postcards) says
kath without her french press?!?! the horror!! 🙂
Hannah says
Sometimes I feel like I’d kill for Siggi’s yoghurt! And then I think I’d quite happily *make do* with Oikos or something of that ilk. Sadly, it’s hard to find good greek style yoghurt that isn’t super rich here in Australia!
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
Hope the conference goes well and the drive doesn’t put you to sleep. I always get so sleepy whenever I drive somewhere longer than a couple hours away.
Shannon says
I have been using the peanut flour mixed with sea salt and coconut oil to make a peanut butter that is out of this world!
Amanda says
I had a sleepless night too 🙁 and I also had siggis in my pumpkin overnight oats this morning! Sooo Good!
Claire (Low Impact Fashionista) says
Even your rushed breakfast look delicious 🙂
Samantha @ Bikini Birthday says
Have fun at the conference and Drive Safe!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
I’ve noticed lately that ANY coffee consumed in the afternoon seriously affects my sleep at night. I usually get up at 5am so I NEED to be able to fall asleep!!
Have a great day Kath! 🙂
Simply Life says
have fun at the conference – hope you get some sleep tonight!
Holly @ couchpotatoathlete says
I still don’t understand the title…maybe I need a cup of coffee to wake myself up!
Kath says
see above comment!
Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy says
I’m a total lightweight when it comes to coffee and can only drink decaf if I don’t want it to effect my sleep! So now I pretty much always drink tea – except for when the pull of a pumpkin spice latte makes me give in. 🙂
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
We watched “The Lovely Bones” last night and that kept me up for a while! I love the peanut flour!!! Sounds super yummy in yogurt. Have fun at the conference!
Annie@stronghealthyfit says
Looks like a great breakfast- I’ve been wanting to try Siggi’s but they are so darn expensive!
lisasfoods says
Have a great time at the conference.
What are the benefits of peanut flour? I’ve seen it at Trader Joe’s, but didn’t buy any, mostly because I feel like I have so much food in the cupboards already…but I’m curious about it.
Kath says
Don’t think there are any benefits – just fun ingredient
jessica says
Protein! Lower fat and cals!
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I love siggi’s yogurt!! <3 🙂
kelsey @ un-american in france says
When you put the peanut flour in the yogurt, do you put it directly in or do you mix it with a little water first? I’m excited to try it – I had my mom send it to me in France and it should arrive in a day or two!!
Kath says
It mix it directly in, but this reminds me that I forgot to mention that I added a wee bit of milk too – to make it mix better
Marina says
Coffee has no influence on me, I wish it helped me stay awake.
Have fun at the conference!
Camille says
Sorry you had a rough night!
Hope you have a good time today!
Amanda (Eating Up) says
I can’t drink coffee past 4 or else I’m up until 2. Not fun!
Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf says
Ever since I bought the hubz a french press, he hasn’t used his programmable coffee maker much. I do miss it since I loved the smell of brewing coffee in the morning, and I don’t drink coffee myself.
Heather says
I need to stop drinking caffeine by 2 pm in the afternoon or I will have trouble sleeping at night. It is the worst when your partner is not having a good night sleep either – makes it that much more difficult to sleep.
Safe travels to Richmond.
Natalia - a side of simple says
Hope the conference goes well and the blogger meet up, too! Safe driving 🙂

Kath,
Given that the half life of caffeine is known to be between 3-5 hours (the most commonly accepted being 4.9, seems very precise!), do you have a theory as to why it would be metabolised more slowly in your body and hence morning impact have an impact so much later than would be expected?
Is it just a caffeine issue for you, or have you noticed similarly slow clearance across the board? Interesting stuff, as ever!
Christina says
Some people have a variation in the main CYP450 enzyme responsible for metabolizing caffeine. It extends the half life (and slows the clearance rate). Others are better metabolizers and more quickly eliminate caffeine.
Christina says

FYI, if you’re into this kind of thing.
Kath says
I”ve heard it can take as much as 24 hours to clear from your body. Regardless, I know I am super sensitive to caffeine. If I have more than 2 cups I get the shakes big time, and I’ve always had trouble sleeping if I have more than 1 cup. I would love to give it up, but I do love it so, so I just keep my consumption to 1 cup a morning.
Cyndi @ Weightless Life says
I could drink coffee all day, and the only reason it would keep me up is because I’d keep having to run to the bathroom. It’s not unusual for me to have 2 or 3 cups a day. Have a good day at the conference.
Lindsay says
i want a KERF mug! where can i buy it?!!?

Forget love. Programmable coffee makers really DO make the world go round.
I seriously have to try Siggi’s one of these days! I’ve been a Fage girl for a while but I just keep reading about how delish it is! Is there just a plain variety or are they all flavored?
Clare @ Fitting It All In says
I’ve been trying to think of a good way to use peanut flower, and in yogurt is perfect! I nice protein kick and some PB flavor. Can’t wait to try it
Kelsey @ Clean Teen Kelsey says
I have heard soo much about TJ’s Pumpkin Butter! Wish there was one nearby so I could pick some up. Peanut flour would be super nice to have, too, lol.
Teresa @ Teresa Tastes & Travels says
That exact model of coffee pot leers at me from my counter on that days I overdo it, too! Have a safe drive!!!

Oh how I miss that Christmas Folgers commercial where the son comes home. Great reference!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
I think I’d be the same way if I even had a sip of coffee- I don’t drink or even eat much caffeine so the smallest bit would send me up the wall.
LizLivingVegan says
I’ve been having fun with TJ’s peanut flour as well! I used to to frost some cupcakes 🙂 Yummy!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
yikes, 2.5 hours isn’t that great, but especially not so little sleep! hope it goes well 🙂

Whenever you post about having had a bad sleep, I always had a bad sleep too! I hope tonight is a better night for you. 🙂

When you add Chia Seeds to oatmeal etc…do you add them as is or do you grind them up?
I just bought some and just wondering how to incorporate them into my routine?
