I have had the BEST morning!!! This house hasn’t felt this empty since we moved in 3.25 years ago and I love it! Since I was ready to start my day at 6AM, I got right to work packaging up a lot of our superfluous decor and kitchen stuff. I’m assuming that we’ll sell our house in a shorter-rather-than-later timeframe, so I’m hoping to be as organized as possible going into the move since I’ll have to do everything on Sat + Sun while in my internship. I also want every cabinet that could possibly be peeked in by a buyer to look like a page in Real Simple
If I haven’t mentioned it before, our plan is to finish up some renovations in the next two weeks (new shower door, new bathroom fixtures, pressure washing, carpets cleaned) and put our house on the market on February 16!! Our plan is when we sell our house to move into Karen’s condo with her for a few months while I finish my internship (July 2) and then we’re headed to to Charlottesville around August 1! Our stuff is going to go into a POD. If anyone has used PODS before, please give me any advice!
This stuff is so hard to pack because it’s big, heavy and breakable!
Luckily I receive lots of packages in this house, and I’ve been saving boxes (and bubble wrap!) for a few months now (you can tell the sun wasn’t even up when I started!)
My company:
The end result [many hours later!!]. All properly packaged and labeled!
Boxes with an X aren’t to be opened until we OWN another house. Boxes with a check are items I’d like to use while we rent for a while.
During this process I also reorganized the kitchen so the same stuff is in the same cabinets. You see, we have all of our oatmeal bowls in one cabinet and then all tiny bowls in another and plates in various places so I moved them all to be grouped together. I hope Matt doesn’t get lost when he comes home!
[BY THE WAY, Matt has been in CHARLOTTESVILLE this weekend doing research for the bakery!!! I didn’t want to say anything since I would then be telling the world I was home alone. It was a lonely and scary-at-times weekend, but I also had a blast being a single girl 🙂 He comes home today!)
Piles of bowls now sorted… [and color coded 😉 ]
Used to be half bars n stuff and half appliances. Now ALL appliances
Now ALL bars n stuff ( used to be half appliances)
Out of control tea, now sorted
Cabinets a mix of stuff
Now ALL bowls
Now ALL plates (plus mugs + glasses)
This cabinet used to be so crowded I was afraid to take things out of it! Most of that is now in boxes and it’s so much prettier
I also collected goodies to give to my friends in a donation this weekend! Good stuff too!
Something that was UNPACKED – a Vita-mix!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The CIA Professional Series.
The company sent me one to review. I have been SO curious about these since I learned about them through the blog world a few years ago. What could be so amazing about a blender!?
Ok, OK! They have me convinced!! This blender is magical. There wasn’t a hair of un-blended food when I was finished. I love how lightweight the top half is – my Cuisinart blender must weigh 20 pounds and is a pain to pick up full of smoothie! I love that you can clean it in itself – just add water and a drop of detergent. I can’t wait to see what else this bad boy can do! More fun to come.
I broke for lunch around 11:30, quite shocked that my breakfast held me from 5:30 – 6 hours. When I’m doing stuff on my feet I don’t think about food and only stop for lunch when I’m really hungry.
I didn’t know what to have for lunch, but I knew I wanted kabocha. I ate a few pieces cold while debating what to make!
I finally decided I should BLEND something for lunch. I surveyed the fridge and decided to blend up this crazy mix:
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup garbanzo beans
- 1/2 banana
- 2 handfuls spinach
- ~1 tsp agave
- ~1/2 tsp cinnamon
Bean + Spinach Soup!?
Drizzled with more agave
It was awesome!!!!!!!! I could definitely taste the garbanzos, but the banana + spinach sweetened it enough to be really good
Dontcha just love that color!?
Of course the squash made its appearance – along with a carrot + a little PB
This was THE PERFECT lunch for my taste buds today!
And the sun shined in!
It’s so pretty and warm out I opened the patio door!!!! <3 North Carolina
So glad you guys liked the Create Your Day + Share Our Strength campaign! It’s ongoing, so make some more bowls 🙂
Continuing my happy day off with a little computer work and then headed to the gym for a workout. Wish I could have ran outside today because it’s so nice, but my feet need to recover from those 8 miles!

We’re going to be in the process of moving soon…I wish I had your organization skills!

Looks like you’re making great progress on the packing!

Nice work on getting a head start on the packing!! And i’m SUPERRRR jealous of the vitamix!!
Madeline @ greensandjeans says
How exciting about the move! You are definitely a smart cookie to start packing and getting organized now. Moving is one of my least favorite things, but if I was as on top of things as you guys are, maybe I wouldn’t mind it so much!
Lauren @ Eater not a runner says
That is so exciting about the bakery! And good work on being so productive, that is awesome!
I am super jealous of your vitamix. I would LOVE one of those things.
Lily @ Lily's Health Pad says

You’re so organized! I wish I was like that when I’m moving
Foy Update - Cook. Garden. Write. Repeat. says
That’s the problem with photos in magazines like Real Simple they don’t have the clutter that daily life creates.
I like to myself as able to live very simply. I still don’t own more than my car can hold. (Granted I own a car and it’s a 1993 Park Avenue – which is huge, so I do have stuff.) Everytime a I move (which seems to be about every six months right now) I pare down and donate or gift away my things and I always feel so much better.
I keep only the quality stuff I really want and suddenly I feel like I own really nice things. Weeding out the cheap stuff means I only keep the best. I hope when I get grounded in one spot I’ll be able to let go of things this easily. But I know that’s a side effect of having space. Once I have it, I’ll fill it up.
Kalli@Fitandfortysomething says
Yes, my husband and I used PODS when we moved from Nevada to California. Like you we needed to seel and then move in with someone before we could move to California. PODS was great. We packed what we could live without and then we packed up everything when we sold our place. Then they met at us at our new place with the POD. It was GREAT!
Good luck!
What an adventure….
Allison (Eat Clean Live Green) says
You’re so organized!
Do you think Vitamix is worth the price?
Kath says
If you use a blender frequently, then definitely. If you rarely use yours, then I wouldn’t invest in one.
Tracey says
I’m going through an organization of my kitchen right now. It is a lot of work trying to organize everything and make all the appliances fit. Especially in a small condo kitchen.
Cynthia (It All Changes) says
Because we move so much I have to be super organized when packing and storing. I use totes because boxes get to beat up with all the moving we do but I label on masking tape so I can remove or just tape over when we move again.
I love that you want it to look like Real Simple. That is always my goal.
Lauren says
Okay, I’m so tempted to go out and buy a Vitamix just because of the cleaning feature. I hate taking apart my Cuisinart to clean it. Such a pain in the butt.
Erica says
Hey Kath — I used a POD a few years back during a delayed move (like your own, we lived with the parents until our house was ready).
Advice: Don’t put clothes in the POD. I too had one during the summer, so thought it was a good idea to put all the winter clothes in the POD. A bunch of our sweaters had holes in them when I unpacked them, and I think it’s because the storage facility wasn’t bug-proof. If anything, maybe treat your clothes before putting them in the POD (isn’t that what our grandma’s moth balls were for???)
Ali says
You inspired me to try overnight oats this morning, and wow I’m in love!!! I was always kind of scared by the idea of them, but they were incredible! I loved having instant breakfast. They kept me full through my classes all morning and my workout, where I was able to run my fastest mile in a while- 6:45! oats=fab 🙂
Alicia says
Nice present! 😀
Where did you get your corner shelf? I’m looking for one just like it.
Kath says
It’s part of the JC Penny Lindon Street line and I reviewed it for the blog 2 summers ago.
Amanda says
Kath! I have got to say, after reading your blog for a year – you def. have the best home style! I love how comfortable and chic everything in your home is, and all the colors balance so well against them! I really enjoy when you post pictures of your home and dishes, so cozy! 🙂
Kath says
Thanks 🙂
Amanda says
From one Real Simple-inspired organizer to another…in addition to labeling boxes on the outside, I also kept an inventory of what was on the inside – I had a notebook next to me as I filled a box and wrote down everything – Kitchen 1: [list here], etc. This is key when you put stuff into storage so that if the unthinkable happens and a box gets lost and you need to file a claim, you know the contents of the missing box. Luckily that did not happen to me and my friends just tease me about my lists. But they work!! I am with you all the way… happy packing 🙂
Kath says
Great idea!
anne says
I used PODS a few years ago. It was very convenient. A little expensive, but worth it in the end. The best part is you can take as long as you want to load and unload the pod. Good customer service too.
Kathleen says
Oh that must feel awesome to have your house so organized! I love the idea of packing with an x or check mark to organize your things for different times of use…I need to do that with my upcoming move!
Anne Marie@New Weigh of Life says
You’ve been such a busy bee!
amber says
Wow your organizing looks so good!! What a great feeling! Good luck putting the house on the market!! Ahh the vitamix, has been on my wish list for a few years now. I am very happy to see you found it amazing.
debbie monaco says
Suggestions on moving: always pack your plates on there sides with plenty of tissue on the bottom; why..because packing them flat causes breakage; also when packing up the kitchen dishes and anything that is special to you…you a very thick box..they make china boxes that you can purchase at U-haul or any moving company. Be sure that you layer each level sufficiently! and use two pieces of packing paper with your dishes. Always pack the heaviest items on bottom of box and move to the lightest as you top your box.
I have moved 9 times in 10 years and have never had a broken dish yet! Yes, I packed everything myself. You can also use towels, hand towels to cushion your layers as well. Also make sure that the spaces in the box are filled with either paper, or towels…whatever…again it can cause breakage. I have used the pods before…they are excellent…they can take and store them or leave them near you…
Eileen says
I am in complete awe of your organizational skills. COMPLETE.
Your house is very pretty, and I’m sure it will sell quickly. Good luck!
Cindy says
Kath–you should shop around for different PODS type companies in your area, there are more than one. When we needed to store stuff we used SAM (getasam.com) because we found it was the cheapest option for us. I think even stores like Home Depot have options too.
megan says
you are so organized! I’m very impressed. i’m going to check back here if we ever move to use all your ideas. your house is really beautiful and always so neat and clean. I’m sure it will sell quickly!
Faye says
I started packing 1.5 months in advance- our closing date kept on being postponed. I thought the hardest part was packing up the fridge- despite getting rid of a lot of old dressings, sauces, etc., we still had a lot of things we wanted to bring back to the new house. Good luck packing! My cat was my company- cept she kept on playing with the bubble wrap!
Courtney says
We used a few PODS when we were in transition between places and LOVED it. Although I agree with another poster that it was a little expensive, but I think it is worth it. I felt the items were secure and we had no damage to any of our items.
Great job on staging the house to sell it! It is the best thing to do before you show it.

Kath, I love your blog! Don’t have one of my own, but I follow yours and a few others fairly regularly and just love it….they are great to sip coffee to in the morning 🙂
I saw that you are moving to Charlottesville, VA and just wanted to say (of course, I’m not sure how much you already know about the area…) that it is a fantastic place to live! The restaurants there are AMAZING, biking on the Blue Ridge is beautiful and it’s a wonderful place to run since there are so many hills! I am a graduate student just an hour away, but one of my best friends from undergraduate is from there and I loved going to visit her in the summers. I have heard that there are so wonderful farmer’s markets in the summer, too. ZaZu’s has big, yummy wraps (that you can get as a salad) and Bodo’s Bagels are MUST tries (freshly baked every day, and you can get basically anything on them that you’d like!) for when y’all get there.
I hope that everything goes smoothly and that you really love Charlottesville and Virginia!

Beautiful green smoothie! How lucky of you to score a VitaMix, they are the best ever! I have an older model and it works amazingly well for green smoothies and just about anything I can think of. Enjoy it! 🙂
Crystal @ chipped nails and all says
please tell me Matt wasn’t in Target on Saturday….I SWEAR I saw someone that looked EXACTLY like him! rewind back in time and here’s the convo in my head: “hmm…that looks like matt. except he doesn’t look as tall as he seems in pictures. maybe kath isn’t that tall (don’t worry, I’m vertically challenged too!), so he just looks extra tall. hmmmm…must not be matt afterall.” end convo.
totally random but I just remembered that I saw his look-alike once I read this post 🙂 hope the “research” went well! I’m already excited to see where you end up finding a home for the bakery 🙂

As I said in my email to you, THAT WAS HIM!!!!!!!

ps i’m so jealous of your NC weather. here in PA it’s 60* but raining… and will drop back to 40* tomorrow 🙁
Carrie H says
Since you mention it, I gotta tell you that bubble wrap turns 50 today! I heard a funny story about it on NPR this morning. Apparently, the original invetors thought they were inventing a new kind of wall paper! He he, maybe some of your prospective home buyers might like to see you try that out! 😉
Kath says
Haha – what a coincidence!
Leslie says
Mad organizational skillz! 😉
We used a POD and were very happy. My only advice would be to be sure that everything is packed as evenly as possible, both horizontally and vertically– if you ever see how they move them around (I highly recommend watching, it’s pretty cool) you’ll see that the loading and unloading process does tilt the POD to-and-fro… and things can shift. Don’t pile up uneven stacks, even against the walls, unless you tie them to secure them.
Good luck with the packing!
Haleigh says
So exciting about the upcoming move and the bakery!!! 🙂
Ashley G. says
Kath,
I agree with Calla above: Charlottesville is a GREAT place to live! I lived there for two years while attending UVA for Graduate School. In addition to Zazu and Bodo’s you will love Mudhouse Coffee, which I visit every time I go down there. It is a fanatic running town with a great running store called Ragged Mountain Running. There are also a TON of great food shops in the purple Market building, a fresh market each weeked during the warmer months and restaurants galore!!!! I can’t wait to come visit the Great Harvest Bread you guys are opening! I just went to the one in Herndon, VA last week because you inspired me!! Their spinach and feta bread is very savory and delicious. I wish you all the best with packing! Let me know if you need and recommendations about anything Cville!

I noticed yesterday you mentioned you were training…are you running a 1/2 marathon coming up or thinking of signing up for one? I am running the rock n’ roll half in Dallas and it’s my first running race ever, so I am a bit nervous. Good luck to you if you are!!!
Kath says
Yes, casually training for a half in April!
Brandy says
We just a POD last year and had a horrible experience. The POD storage facility wasn’t secure! Our lock was broken and almost everything was stolen. They never even caught the thieves because there were no cameras.
I learned a few lessons from that awful experience. Take pictures as you load the POD so you can document everything that goes in it. Also make an inventory list. And definitely, definitely, definitely, make sure the POD storage facility in your area is staffed and secure with cameras. They lead you to believe that they all are, but I learned otherwise. Good luck!
Kath says
OH NO!!!
Christie @ Honoring Health says
Wow, you are the organizing queen! Go you!
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
The soup smoothie is gorgeous! I’m glad to know you are on the cautious side too about not divulging too much info to the world (like being home alone). This is the Internet after all.

My mom lives just outside the Cville area and whenever I’m home I much prefer to visit Cville than stay at her house (I consider the area on the other side of Afton mountain a little … middle of nowhere). I have tons of family there, too, so I will tell them all to go to Great Harvest when y’all open it up! You will like Cville, though, and especially the mountains and the hiking just a few minutes away.

I found pods to be a thousand dollars more than upackit when I was moving from Chicago to Los Angeles. There website is /www.upack.com/. I had a good experience dealing with the upackit people than the pod people. Hope this helps, I just think everyone should have options. I paid about 1700 to move across country and the pod people wanted to charge over 3000.
Erin says
Kath,
My husband and I used a Pod while we moved from an apartment at the end of 2008 until we move into our house in October. He (the expert Pod packer) says to pack everything in the Pod securely, don’t leave any space for things to shift! The Pod guy told him we had one of the best packed Pods he’d ever seen and I the only damage I ended up with was a broken plate, a broken glass, and a few light scratches on my furniture.

It *is* scary to be without your guy when you are used to having him around! I’d def lock the doors all the time without mine!
PODS I don’t know about really, but moving around and having to move ~every 6 months for five years…that is my specialty! If you got questions, let me know!
The smoothie made with the vita-mix — so wish I had one, right now I just have a lame ol’ blender — was is really sweet? I can’t imagine the taste of chickpeas, spinach, naner, and agave together!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
so jealous of your vitamix!!! my coblogger christy has one and swears by it.
Kate (This American Wife) says
We moved last year, and the best money we spent was $100 or so on moving boxes from an online moving supply store. It seems like a waste of money since you can easily find boxes from craigslist/ stores/ friends, etc… but the wonderful thing about buying boxes is that you get exactly the right sizes (hanging boxes for coats/clothes, boxes for artwork, big boxes, little boxes) AND they all stack nicely and neatly in a moving truck (or pod). This also means boxes are much less likely to get bent out of shape, or stacked so pressure points are wrong, which can lead to your stuff being broken! Totally worth the cost! Good luck!
Ashley J says
I am such a dork, but I love before and after photos of organization.

Sooo jealous of the vitamix. Way to get right in there with the beans right away! I’ve seen some people use beans in their green smoothies, but I don’t know if I would be brave enough. Did the vitamix heat it up too? I really really want one. I use my magic bullet at least once a day.

Kath, Im moving to Charlottesville this summer too! I keep telling everyone how excited I am that one of my favorite bloggers will be there now– and how amazing it will be to have a Great Harvest in town!!
Im sure that your move will go smoothly as you seem so so organized. Im dreading the physical move aspect as well but keep in mind it will be worth it in the end!

Charlottesville, VA??!?! Kath! I’m so excited! I used to life there – my boyfriend went to UVA and we still go there every once in a while. We know a lot about the area – I’d love to share some info if you are interested =)
