As usual, the most valuable host training comes from the other Great Harvest owners. We had dinner tonight with Jane and Pat and learned so much great advice.
But first, a lazy afternoon spend side-by-side on computers, with our feet up. I need my Danskos!
Then, another rally: a 3 mile run through our hotel’s “neighborhood.” We ran to a small park and back, including a loop in the park. Just enough to get some energy. I swear – the next time you’re in a slump go out for a short run. I promise you’ll get more energy then you knew was in you!
We met back up at the bakery and talked dollars and cents for a long time.
And moved on to vino!
Served in a beautiful clay glass!
And pizza!
Two slices of veggie for me
Plus a big salad that Matt and I contributed
One of our hosts. So gracious!
A big thank you to GH Columbia for taking us under their wings!
Holly @ Couch Potato Athlete says
That clay glass is adorable and that pizza looks fantastic!
I like that you and Matt got to work with other GH owners — is this something that you set up or does GH recommend that you do this?
KathEats says
It’s recommended but we do it!

My Adobe Lightroom came this afternoon. After I get home from work tonight, I am going to play around with it…or tomorrow! I am soo excited. One day I hope my pics are as pretty as yours 🙂

Sweet baby doggie 🙂
Love, love the glass and that pizza looks so tasty!
Valerie @ City|Life|Eats says
Sounds like you had a nice break in the middle of a long day. Yay for pizza 🙂
Olena says
The recent discussion about the value of bread and bread prices reminded me of similar contrasting views on wine. Is it better to drink more cheap vino or go for pricier but much more rewarding kinds? I’d take the “less is more” approach any day and go for just a slice of higher-quality bread instead of a large cheaper loaf. In vino veritas. 😉
KathEats says
Good analogy 🙂
Morgan @ moments of mmm says
Wine, pizza and a beautiful salad sounds amazing!
I’m going to have to try this spend energy to get energy thing. 😀
Night!
Michelle (The Runner's Plate) says
Danskos are the best!!! EVERYONE wears them here in Alaska, and I’m trying to figure out if it an Alaskan thing or possibly a Northwest thing??
Yeah for running being recharging—I wish more people would realize this!!
dana says
I really can’t get over the fact that your in Catonsville!! haha. I was just at their house this past weekend… so weird.
KathEats says
Do you know the owners!?
dana says
Their nephew (Pat) is one of my closest friends from high school…and, his fiance is also one of my close friends. When I first saw you post about GH in Columbia, I called them right away and explained that one of my favorite bloggers was at their Aunts bakery! I was just at their house for a bridal shower too. They had some fantastic food! I grew up down the street from their house too.
Enjoy your stay in MD! It’s just such a small world!
KathEats says
Oh wow – what a fun connection!

Totally agree about the energy. Getting up for my morning runs is usually a struggle, but I know I’ll have twice the energy for the rest of the day.
PS: I am now having pizza tonight.
Katie says
So nice you got to dine with them and hear their experiences with their GH and learn some stuff! I am very excited for you and Matt!!
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
What a great way to info right from the source. These connections you make are going to help you and Matt SO much as you get into the business and even years down the road when a question might come up!
Perfect simple dinner!
Amy at TheSceneFromMe says
I think all new company owners should have to spend time with other franchise owners before opening their own. What a great concept and a fabulous way to learn the ropes even more!
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
Their house is gorgeous! Sometimes its just that much easier ordering pizza. And it can be done in a healthful way!
kaila @ Healthy Helper blog says
What a cute doggie! I love veggie pizza from actual pizzerias! There is just something about it that can’t be recreated at home! What a nice treat 🙂
Deva (Voracious Vorilee) says
Their dog is so sweet-looking! I bet pizza was so satisfying after a busy day at work – it’s one of my favorite post-hard labor foods because it can be so filling and healthy.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
Love the clay glass! Sounds like you had a great trip. I can’t believe the bakery is about to happen for you guys. I am totally living through your experiences right now!

Kath! You’re absolutely right about a short run being energizing! I’ve been doing just that this week and wow-oh-wow, do I feel so much better after it! 🙂
Baking 'n' Books says
Is the pizza take-in? It looks so good! Pizza and vino – perfect way to end a vino day I say!
I get so horribly stiff from sitting from all day making me feel worse – but when I go out for a walk I’m still really stiff and tired…do you have that hump when you first start your runs with Matt? Or do you just feel tired to get out to do it?
J3nn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I had a feeling you contributed the salad; it looks like one of your trademark salad creations. 🙂 Love veggie pizza!! Looks so yummy, and maybe even real NY-style pizza?!
Tina says
The dog is GORGEOUS! I used to have a Sheppard growing up and she was one of the sweetest things.

I serously think you and matt are the best thing that could have ever happened to the Great Harvest Bread Company. Seriously. You all are incredible people and a powerhouse couple! I wish you were opening another store here in CLT… hehe

So exciting for you…and great that you get to meet with other owners.

Kath,
I picked up some Great Harvest Shamrock Rolls from the Rockville, MD location earlier this week. I was shocked that the ingredients list included high fructose corn syrup? Thoughts? My sisters and I are totally planning a road trip to your store once it opens. Good luck!
KathEats says
It’s been up to eat bakery to decide on their ingredients and some are still using the same ones as when HFCS was considered a good ingredient back in the day. I don’t think a little is a bad thing, but we won’t be using it
