Matt and I had Karen over for dinner tonight. But dear Matt now has two mothers to pamper so he put on a special dinner for the both of us!
Complete with cards + gifts!
Karen brought over cheese + crackers to have for cocktail hour…
…and the two of them sipped wine while the son helped his mother with a technical issue on her computer
I enjoyed a mocktail. I have to say I’m getting a little tired of sweet drinks. Sweet drinks and cheese do not complement one another! Although most of my mocktails are just a splash of juice and mostly sparkling water, I’m missing the lovely contrast that wine + beer offer to food.
Matt’s gift to me was a trio of cute baby shirts for our little guy!!!
I have to say I think I enjoyed the thought of him baby clothes shopping by himself almost as much as opening the real present. So sweet!! I love the styles he picked!
And then we feasted
Matt made short ribs – from Free Union Grass Farm that he picked up at the farmer’s market – in the crock pot all day. I know he added carrots + celery plus a homemade BBQ sauce made from ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire, Liquid Smoke and red pepper flakes. They pretty much cooked all day long! Tender and fall-off-the-bone good. I only got about 2/3 of the way through my portion before I ran out of room!
Because I was busy typewritering my corn on the cob!
And eating my green beans.
Deliciousness!
My first mom is dining with her other daughter tonight. We have already exchanged blog comments and G-chats today. Modern mother-daughter Mother’s Day communication! Perhaps a Skype later on! We both had malfunctions in our traditional gifts – I sent her gift to my house instead of hers and hers is somewhere in USPS’s possession!
I spent the afternoon writing, doing laundry and taking care of general household tasks, so I am NOW going to read on the porch for the rest of the evening!!

Awww love your family!!

If you’re tired of sweet mocktails, you might want to try shrubs, which are a sweetened vinegar concoction that’s supposed to play on the tongue much like alcohol does. You can make all kinds of fruity flavors- I made one this week with rhubarb and added it to some seltzer.
KathEats says
Oh cool. Someone told me about those recently, but I forgot. Thanks!

Happy Mother’s Day! I was thinking early about how special it must be to have your first Mothers’ Day just a few months before your baby arrives–all the anticipation of the happiness that is to come. Love the baby shirts Matt picked out! 🙂

homemade BBQ sauce made from ketchup, vinegar, Worcestershire, Liquid Smoke and red pepper flakes = I could just have that on most anything and be very happy. Sounds so good!
And that stuffed cheese within-a-cheese wedge…I need to do that! Great idea!

Wow, Matt did a great job picking out shirts–those husbands/dad’s always have a way of surprising us! Although my husband always helped pick out cute outfits, he now dressed our 2 year old in all one color from head-to-toe;-)

Happy Mother’s Day Kath! Your dinner looks delicious. That striped onesie is so cute. And I think there’s nothing more endearing than a future-father shopping for their future child. I know my fiance thinks he’s going to be a horrible father someday but I know that he’s going to be great.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Happy Mother’s Day to you! You’re sure going to have a stylish little guy. 🙂
Julie says

How about non-alcohol wines and beers? I have friends how liked to have a glass of those while pregnant.
KathEats says
I haven’t seen a non alcoholic wine before?
Jen says
You can find the brand “Fre” Non-Alcoholic wines at any major grocery store – I believe there are Harris Teeters by you? I know I’ve seen them at Publix here in FL. There are 6 varieties to choose from. Try one for fun! They are usually towards the end displays on the wine aisle.
katie says
It’s called Fre. No idea if it is any good.

The rosé, the bubbly and chardonnay are quite good. It’s the best I’ve found.
Cheers!

Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
The crock pot is great for cooking meat like that. I have a small one that I use to cook a chicken bread or country ribs just for Ralph. Crock pots are the best!
Molly @ RDexposed says
I feel your pain on the beverages. Soon enough you’ll be sipping on IPAs, kolsches, stouts, doppelbacks, porters..!
Katie says
Life is good! Love the shirts, Matt did a great job. Did you wash them and hang them up already? I know I always did. Do you have a mental picture of what you expect your little guy to look like? A mini version of Matt, more like you, or a combo of both? Just wondering. Happy belated mother’s day!
KathEats says
I don’t really….just generic baby for now. But as a toddler…hard to know! Matt was blonde as a kid, but is so dark now, so even a mini him might not look like him till he’s older.
Jodi @ Jodi, Fat or Not says
I’ve been thinking about getting a crock pot – what kind do you have??
KathEats says
I have a big Kitchenaid one I won as a prize at Foodbuzz. I like it a lot. https://www.katheats.com/best-of-summer
Katie says
It’s always fun to see who they end up looking like… and acting like. My 6 1/2 year old daughter is a little mini-me, she looks so much like me it’s a little eerie and we have similar personalities. We have pictures that we can hold side by side and people can’t tell who is who. My 5 1/2 year old son doesn’t have a strong resemblance to either myself or my husband, he’s a combination of both of us. Although Claire and Landon are a year apart and the same size so people think they look alike and are twins.
Kel@thekelshow says
Karen looks wonderful!
A belated Happy Mother’s day to you!
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says

I DIE at the baby clothes. Baby KERF is going to be such a dapper gentleman 😀
Megan says
Too funny…my husband picked out the exact same cream/brown button-down shirt at Old Navy this weekend. It’s almost impossible to drag him out of the baby clothes section! So.dang.cute!
KathEats says
Fun!
Erin Motz says
That little white shirt on the left just cracks me up! In a good way, of course 😉 Little babies in adult-looking clothing is the best!
Megan says
You should try soda water with a splash (or 3) of bitters and lime, my favorite mocktail! If you go to a fancy wine shop you can stock up on different fancy bitters but angostura will always be #1.
