And right now I wish I were on an airplane. Seriously Nova?! It’s not even close to rush hour.
We swung by the bakery before we left for goods and sandwiches and ate them at noon.
Twin Oaks Tofu and Cheddar for me. A half sandwich on Dakota. Mmmm!
Plus chips on the side to share… love Route 11!
And lots of cherries!!
Can’t wait to see my whole family!
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Safe travels! Have fun with your family – always great to recharge! 🙂
Christine says
mmmm…cherries. Bought some from Whole Foods last night and they are fantastic! safe travels, looks like Chi-town traffic these days.
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Yup…that’s good ol’ NoVa…
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Okay, now I have Willie Nelson playing in my head…On The Road Again! lol Despite the traffic, at least you have provisions and each other’s company to bide your time! I always enjoy being alone in the car with my husband on long driving trips…we have had some of the best conversations en route! Enjoy your adventure!
Kat says
As a NOVA resident, I feel your pain. Fridays are typically bad from morning to evening rush hour. BTW, I visited a friend at JMU a few weeks back and we visited the Rt. 11 potato chip factory (it’s about 20 miles north of Harrisonburg on 81) which was pretty cool, got to try all of their different flavors!
Cristin says
That looks like Tysons/267. Welcome to my world! Friday rush hour in DC/Nova starts at noon.
At least Rte 1 looks good!
Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
Yum! I love fresh cherries! I’m hoping to pick some up over the weekend to enjoy. Safe travels and have fun with your fam! 🙂
Rachel C says
Yes, isn’t NoVA traffic crazy? I drive it everyday and waste about 3-4 hours of my life in traffic…what a shame. Have a nice time and drive safe.
OliePants says
I love a road trip – and sandwiches! 🙂 Have a safe trip.
Ashley @ Hudson on the Potomac says
Gotta love the NOVA traffic! I commute in it daily, fun stuff!! Jealous of your chips, love ’em! Drive safe, hopefully it’ll clear up some for you! They do a lot of construction during the day :(.
Elise says
It’s the last day of school in NoVA and most got out around 11 just in time for everyone to jump on the highway for the first summer vacations! Enjoy your trip!
Lace @ Real Food Quest says
That tofu looks so interesting. It is flavored in some way?
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
Looks like everyone’s headed out of town for the weekend…by noon on summer Friday 🙂
Have fun!
Cait's Plate says
Have so much fun and be safe!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
Wow, that looks like quite the bit of tofu! What’s it seasoned with? Good luck with the traffic! 🙂
Roxanne says
I thought the tofu was chicken and Kath made a mistake!
It looks quite yummy!
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
I was wondering the same thing!
Liz says
I’m totally loving cherries right now too — I just wish they were a little bit cheaper! I’m also loving Twin Oaks tofu as well — it’s so yummpy and I love that it’s “pre-pressed.” Have a good trip — sorry about the triaffic but it’s totally a way of life in NoVa, be glad you’re in Charlottesville :).
Melanie says
I live in NoVA and spend a couple hours a day in that traffic – worst part of living in this area! Have a safe trip and enjoy!!
Alyssa (pb and oatmeal) says
I love your pictures! Have fun!
Angel7 says
I need to find where they sell Route 11 Potato Chips around here.

Annette @FitnessPerks says
oooh have FUN!!
Bridget Dongarra says
We have cherries here too! Do you choose organic or are those conventional cherries? They seem to be in season so the prices are great and I LOVE cherries. What is your thought on the importance of organic with this particular fruit?
KathEats says
They are conventional. I haven’t even seen organic. I wash them well.
Claire says
It might be worth it to find organic cherries, as they are on the “dirty dozen” list that are among the worst things to buy conventionally due to the amount of pesticides: http://www.organic.org/articles/showarticle/article-214
I keep the list of the “dirty dozen” in my purse when I go to the store, just so I know what to buy organic!
And YUCK to the traffic – we’re driving up 95 tomorrow through NoVa and I’m not looking forward to it!
KathEats says
I know but I can’t fin them and love cherries!
Jay says
There’s no way I’d an arm and leg for organic cherries. Until there’s a long-term randomized trial showing conventional do your body more harm I’ll save my dollars for travels.
Jay says
pay* an arm and a leg
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
Rush hour on Friday starts at 2PM here in DC. I’m not surprised.
Grace @ Grace Dishes says
Have a great trip! That sandwich looks so good!
Michelle (Peachy Palate) says
Cherries!!! They’re finally cheap now here why the going is good! That sambo looks yum! I need some good gluten free sandwich bread asap!
@FactFinderSteph says
Man being allergic to soy is so not fun!! Especially when you see pictures of sandwhiches like that!! YUM!
Amanda @ flecksofgreen says
Traffic is near, if not at, the top of my list of most dreaded things! I find that I get so impatient in traffic and I actively try not to be! Nothing seems to work 🙁
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
You and your cherries! I’m going to have to buy some from the Farmers Market this weekend since yours always look so good!
Michael Tavallaei says
sandwich looks great.
Julie says
I would be starving if I only ate half a sandwich! I don’t know how you do it and your eating for two…maybe I just have a big appetite 😉
KathEats says
Small stomach space and reduced appetite, but increased snacking potential
Katie says
My kids picked out Dakota today and we just had paninis. We also loaded up on the cherries while at the grocery store’s produce sale – $2.99 lb. $4.99 for 4 lb strawberries, $1.88 pineapples, .99 lb grapes and broccoli, $1.49 peaches plus other produce. The kids each had a medium sized cart and I had a regular cart and we had them full of mostly produce, as usual. How exciting that you get to see your whole family, enjoy your trip!
Laura (Blogging Over Thyme) says
Yep, pretty much have to deal with that traffic every day. It never makes any sense…I’ve given up trying to figure it out. Have a great trip!
delia says
Didn’t you just go on vacation with your family? It’s almost like you never left.
KathEats says
Not grandmother, cousins, aunts, uncles and west coasters!
Tiffany says
Have a great trip!
Have you noticed that the price of TJ’s sunflower has gone up? 🙁 or has it always been $5?
KathEats says
Yes, it used to be more like $3.50 I think!
Jun says
Just wondering… how does tofu taste in a sandwich? As in, paired with bread instead of the typical rice or noodles.
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
LOVE cherries. I bought some at the store yesterday and I’m trying to make them last a few days…that’s harder than it seems. I could eat the whole bag in one sitting!
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Traffic can make you crazy sometimes, but your sandwich looks delicous!
Lexi @ You, Me, & A World to See says
Nothing says roadtrip like sandwiches! Enjoy your trip, Kath 🙂
Amanda Whitehurst says
What! I live in NoVa and I totally thought I saw you at this froyo place, but I wasn’t sure…did you stop by Josie’s froyo perchance?
KathEats says
Haha, no, that wasn’t me!
