Getting up at 4:45 is no big deal if you’re in bed by 9! I had a great night of reading. I’m trying my darned hardest to finish South of Broad so I can start The Story of Edgar Sawtelle for our beach book club! Anyone read it?
I also love waking up at 4:45 because at 5:00 my radio station plays the Star Spangled Banner!! I love all patriotic music
Also also love oldies!!!! Today I went to Chuck’s cycle class – possibly the last time before we move – and had a blast spinning away. Chuck likes oldies and played some great beach music that got me PUMPED for my beach trip in 3 weeks!!
So since returning home, I’ve been blasting this Beach Boys Medley on Grooveshark!
I’m scarfing down this breakfast and blogging at the same time – no time, no time!!!
A no-cook Flax Oat Bran bun topped with a small mashed banana (some of which I ate before cycle) and Cinnamon Vanilla Sunflower Butter and Maranatha Dark Chocolate Almond Butter. Mmmm!!!!
This should hold me over just as long as normal breakfasts because it’s probably about 500 calories (remember Great Harvest bun’s are not 100 calorie thins – they’re pretty hearty – maybe 250 calories per bun!)
Starbucks Via (no clean up!) with hot water, dumped with ice and some organic milk. I couldn’t do hot coffee today – I’m sweating already!
A Nutty Oldie and a Nutty Newbie!
Two fun nut-nouncements available for your enjoyment:
First off, Pecan Pie Butter is in stock! I have to say I did not know this stuff was so expensive when I tried it. It’s REALLY cool, but you’ll want to eat it slooowly if you get some 🙂 It is 100% organic and raw and has live enzymes which are supposedly expensive to create.
Second…
Cinnamon Vanilla Sunflower Butter is back!!!!!!!!!!!!
Only 26 available.
2 jars, 15 oz each.
Ready…set….go!
What’s your favorite oldies song!?
Ashley@thehungryscholar says
I like waking up earlier because Saved by the Bell is on. But I also don’t wake up as early as you :).
I’m moving soon and there is a Great Harvest in walking distance from our house. I get more excited each time I read your blog about this. Your bread always looks so good!
M says
Wow, I would like to meet people who can afford $25 nut butter….
some might say “that’s nuts” 😉 $$$$$ phew!
I enjoy seeing your toast type of brekkies-keep em coming !!
Jessica @ How Sweet It Is says
I get up at 4:45 everyday to workout – it stinks at first but then feels great! I really love the song ‘Runaround Sue.’ 🙂
Gabriela @ Une Vie Saine says
I’ve been getting up earlier and earlier to workout, and I have to say, reading about bloggers’ pre-5am wakeups is always a reminder that I can do it too! My favorite oldies song is “The Way You Look Tonight” by Frank Sinatra. It’s what I want to dance with my daddy to at my wedding 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful day!
Lindsay @ Summit Sandwiches says
I love oldies too. Anything by the Eagles or the Who, and I’m all over it. Fav song would be Dreams by Fleetwood Mac. It’s just beautiful!
Mary @ Bites and Bliss says
That pecan pie butter sounds awesome! I’ve never tried pecan nutbutter before. And oldies are goodies! Mmmmm peanut butter & banana sandwiches are perfect. yum!
Have a good day!
Anne says
Edgar Sawtelle will be a good beach read. It’s a bit slow, but it’s a great story.
Favourite oldies are probably Beatles and Beach Boys – my parents’ music, which reminds me of family trips from when I was a kid.
A Teenage Gourmet (Sami) says
I can’t wait for Nuttzo to be back in stock! I haven’t gotten to try the peanut kind yet. . . My favorite oldies song may be “black bird” by the Beatles. Have a super day! 😀
Kath says
It’s coming back!
Annie @ stronghealthyfit says
I love oldies music! I went through a phase in high school where that was all I would listen to, and I had a friend who was into it too so it was fun 🙂 Looks like a yummy breakfast!
Mom says
Love that plate! And as you know, I love oldies!
Mom says
And my favorite song is “Red Rubber Ball.”
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
Wow. That has to be the most expensive nut butter in the world. Who has the kind of money to buy this stuff?
Lindsay says
Hi there! Just wanted to let you know.. starbucks is coming out wtih via in an iced form. I have some samples at my house (roommate works at starbucks and was asked to share samples with friends). My only problem is it’s pre-sweetened. I don’t use sugar in my coffee, but if i did..i would def love this product.
Have a great day Kath!
Kath says
Oh cooL!
Stacy (StacyGrowsHealthy) says
Your breakfast looks tasty. I’ve been eating just about that every day this week.
Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin says
Oldies music is such a guilty pleasure of mine! My family and I sometimes randomly break out into singing “Walk like a Man” by Frankie Valli. 😛
Simply Life says
I’m so happy you’re in such high spirits for waking up so early – impressive!
Jessica says
My day is not complete without some Frank and Elvis….but I have to say being born and raised in SC….Carolina Girls is my super favortie….although I dont know if that is an oldies song or not….
Evan Thomas says
I have to answer You Say by Lisa Loeb
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
Your breakfast looks so perfect! Sometimes uncooked bread is even better than its toasted counterpart. Mmm…
(p.s. I’m going to have to start going with iced coffees and teas soon too, once it starts warming up around here!)
Hannah says
Oh gosh, I have such a huge love for oldies that I wouldn’t know where to start! For cheesy oldies I love Running Bear, for jazzy oldies I love Mack the Knife, I love Magic Carpet Ride by John Kay and Rushton Moreve, then Beatles, Beach Boys, ahhhh it’s all good! 😀
Dear holy moly that nut butter IS radically expensive. They must wash each pecan in liquid gold 😛
Wei-Wei says
I love anything Beatles! Amateur-oldie, I know. 😛 I like waking up, too! Sigh. I love seeing little bear with an apple on your sidebar. He makes me smile 🙂

Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
I have to say I have a hard time getting into oldies! My parents were big fans of Tom Petty, Simply Red and The Police when I was growing up so I’d say that’s about as far back as I go :). I do LOVE dancing around to those old CDs when I visit home though!
Mary Frances says
Tom Petty is releasing a new album June 15, 2010–sounds great! MOJO. It will be all over the radio next week. Listen for it.
Helen says
This is the 2nd blog that I’ve read about bloggers getting up early to workout, I need to try to do this as I know it’ll make me feel better. My favourite oldie song is Don’t Dream it’s Over by Crowded House, a classic!
Robin says
I read The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, it is a great book, slow at times but really good and especially if you love dogs!! Love oldies too. Happy day! Robin
Dorry says
I’m not sure if I’ve ever even seen the movie, but I LOVE The Big Chill soundtrack – grew up listening to it. The Temptations, “My Girl” and Marvin Gaye’s, “I Heard it through the Grapevine” – oh, my sisters and I would make up the best dance routines!
Kristin @ Iowa Girl Eats says
Awww! I would love waking up to the Star Spangled Banner too!
I created a pandora station that plays movie soundtracks from Twilight, The Chronicles of Narnia, Little Woman, Jurassic Park, etc – I looooove listening to it at work. Makes my day a wee bit more exciting!
Melissa @ For the Love of Health says
I can’t wait to start spinning after you mentioned the spin class!
I hope all your moving tasks are running smoothly!
I LOVE oldies! Especially Motown Oldies and I live 2 minutes from Detroit (across the river) so I really have to find a concert because all those groups still perform! 🙂
Enjoy your day!
Emily says
Edgar Sawtelle is AMAZING – I was completely captivated. My entire family passed it around (as we do with most great books) and it was torture waiting for everyone to finish so we could all discuss!
Jelli says
Here in Costa Rica, the older generations swear that the hotter the coffee, the more it leaves you cooled down in the hot environment. I am still not convinced though…it does not work for me.
Kath says
Very interesting! Hard to believe..
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Ohh that’s a bun! I thought it was a pancake 😛 looks lovel either way!
Robyn @ Frugal 'n' Fit! says
Don’t Worry Baby by The Beach Boys!
I reckon that a $25 jar of nut butter is worth it, if you divide the number of uses with the sheer amount of pleasure you derive from it. A total bargain really!
becky says
Ditto what Emily said about Edgar Sawtell, I couldn’t put it down!
Kelly says
I don’t think I can pick just one. I love Motown and anything by the Beach Boys! My favorite Beach Boys is “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”. Love it!
melissa says
I love the BEACH BOYS! The only wedding detail I have figured out (if I ever get married) is that I will dance to I Can Hear Music 🙂
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
i’m a huge fan of the lovin’ spoonful, elvis, and anything motown! LOVE oldies music…i was just thinking the other day that i feel like an old soul sometimes 🙂
Arlene Gunter says
Yes, I’ve read Edgar Sawtell. I wanted to like it so much, it received huge reviews, even from Oprah – who loved it. I just didn’t. It was soooooo longggggg. and by the end, I was depressed, almost. There didn’t seem to be much of a story there, especially one that had that big of a book in which to tell it.
Anyways, books are like wine – what’s good tasting to one sometimes is not all that good to another!
Kristin (Salty Tooth) says
Love that you can get up so early to workout. I wish I had that dedication!
Marissa says
I’ve only gotten up before 5 a handful of times in my life (for horse shows), and I’ve always been in bed before 8 on those days! Crazy. But I love my sleep. 10 hours is the perfect amount for me!
I’m reading A Farewell to Arms right now… for school reading. Its a little gory but not bad, but I’m still more looking forward to The Joy Luck Club and Fast Food Nation!
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
The simplest breakfasts always hit the spot! That looks so good this morning! My all time favorite old song is “The Rose” by Bette Midler. I also like “Wouldn’t It Be Nice” by The Beach Boys. They seem so random, but I just love them! Have a great day!
Danielle (Runs on Green) says
I love patriotic music too. No shame in having “I’m proud to be an American” thrown on a cd with all your other pop music 🙂
Allison K says
I LOOOVe oldies! I don’t know if i can just pick one song! I only listened to Oldies when I was a kid, it was what my parents listened to in the car!
Amber K says
6:30 is about as early as I can do it, I’m in bed by 9 and asleep by 10 and I need those hours!
I have an aversion to the oldies. It is all my mom listened to when I was a kid and I have heard those songs probably a billion times in my life!
Sara says
Edgar Sawtell is a good book….its a bit slow but i liked it! 🙂
Lauren (Lauren Loves Good Food) says
This may be a real oldie but Moon River has always been one of my favorite songs! It’s just so beautiful and the fact that it’s in one of my favorite Sex and the City episodes is just a plus 🙂
Oh and I’m also a sucker for Come on Eileen — you just can’t be in a good mood when that song comes on!!
I’m DYING to make a trip to our Great Harvest Bread Co. in Boulder this weekend!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
YUM!!!!! How delicious does that look!
Erin Jones says
I had a hard time with Edgar Sawtelle. After two weeks I wasn’t finished and wasn’t interested enough to renew it. I think I made it halfway through.
I’m a military wife – LOOOOOVE that your station plays the national anthem in the mornings!!
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i love all oldies music. we have a record player in the living room and quite an impressive collection – i love everything pre-1980’s – even country!
Michelle @ Give Me the Almond Butter says
Good luck on everything today! I’m glad getting up this morning wasn’t too bad.
Living Free says
I think my fav oldy song would be anything by the Whos. Is that even oldies? I’m showing my youth 🙂
Jessica says
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is an amazing book! I still find myself thinking about it months later – you’ll definitely enjoy it!
Brittany says
The Story of Edgar Sawtelle is SUCH a good book – especially if you’re a dog person (The Art of Racing in the Rain is also a GREAT book if you like dogs). I couldn’t put it down!
Stacie @ Imperfectly Healthy says
It would be so fun to spin to oldies music! I’m totally grooving to the Beach Boys medley you posted right now! 🙂
zoe says
YEEES!
oldies rock my socks off! anything beach boys is basically amazing in my book :)! i love anything by ray charles, etta james, patsy kline…god, i just think i love it all :p
Jenn (Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
I love oldies, too!! I don’t have a favorite, too many to choose from. In fact, I listen to oldies 50% of the time, especially 80s. 🙂
Your breakfast looks divine!

Alyssa says
Just wanted to let you know that Starbucks just launched a new instant ICED coffee packet. It’s made to be poured into a water bottle and dissolve in the cold water. You have instant iced coffee.
Bethany @ More Fruit Please says
“Going to the chapel and we’re gonna get maarrrrried!” I used to sing that song over and over as a child! I have The Story of Edgar Sawtelle sitting on my bookshelf waiting to be read too!
Marilou @ Mostly Healthy says
Nothing tops 80’s rock! Bon Jovi sung at the top of my lungs while driving the windows down = Pure joy 🙂
OOOhhhh we’re halfaway there… OOOh Oh!
Shelley B says
I thought Edgar Sawtelle was very depressing – my advice is to bring an additional book in case you need something happier for the beach.
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Good for you for changing it up and taking cycling. I love that class and it’s such a tough workout.
Tip on the via: You can take the packet, mix it with cold water, and add ice. It dissolves in either hot or cold water. If you have trouble making it add an inch of hot water to the via in the beginning and then the rest with cold water. Can you tell I work at Starbucks. 🙂
Claire says
I picked up Edgar Sawtelle because I’m from the area it’s set in (northern Wisconsin), but I wasn’t thrilled with it. I hope you like it better than I did! That said, I have high standards for books because I read so constantly (I’m an English PhD student).
Shad17 says
you’ve inspired me to try spinning class. I had a back injury a while ago and have stayed away from vigorous exercise, but I think it’s time to challenge myself. Thanks for the inspiration!
I love oldies, too!
BroccoliHut says
That chocolate almond butter looks divine!
Gotta say, my favorite oldie will always be “Build Me Up Buttercup.”
Sara says
I’m with Claire and Erin regarding Edgar Sawtelle. Our book club read it and we were equally divided regarding whether we liked it or not. (I couldn’t finish it.) It’s funny, when I think of oldies I think of Motown. However, I guess Sting’s “Brand New Day” would be considered an oldie, so I will go with that as one of my favorites. Btw, I love, love your website. I just tried fig preserve, a few Toasted Oat cereal from Whole Foods and natural peanut butter in my Greek-style plain yogurt…something I never would have tried without inspiration from you. It was delicious.
