It feels like a chilly fall morning out there. I was even tempted to put on a Christmas piano song. It appears that Old Man Winter left something in Cville before his journey to the north pole.
Thus, hot oatmeal sounded nice and cozy this morning.
In the bowl:
- 1/3 cup oats
- 2/3 cup water
- 1/3 cup milk
- Chia seeds
- Cinnamon
- Pinch salt
- 1 tbsp raisins
- 1/2 banana
- 1/3 cup cottage cheese, stirred in at end
- Salty peanuts
- TJ’s Cookie Butter
The perfect blend of sweet + salty!
Good ole hot tea!
A little note: For the most part, KERF is a diary of every meal I eat. Not necessarily every bite, but every meal and official snack. But now, with this little one growing inside of me, I’m finding that I need meals spontaneously! Last night before bed, my stomach literally growled. A mug and a half of cereal did the trick. It wasn’t worthy of a blog post or photograph, but it played a significant role in my needs for the day. I also had a few handfuls of trail mix on my ride home yesterday. I’m just clarifying this in case any of you assume that everything you see here is everything I’m eating!
Have a wonderful Monday Tuesday!!!
Angela @ Eat Spin Run Repeat says
It’s feeling a little too chilly for my liking here this morning too, Kath! Last week was gorgeous but I had to go back to wearing pants over my shorts to the gym this morning… not cool! I hope you have a good day – stay warm! 🙂
Allie@LiveLaughEat says
You mean you weren’t going to set up your light set, grab your tripod and take multiple photos of the cereal bowl? Slacker! 🙂
I’m enjoying the cool day. One last one [hopefully] before it becomes blazing hot.

Hope @ With A Side Of Hope says
I’m kind of liking that it’s chilly again. It gives me more reason to continue wearing my uggs. 🙂 Since there wasn’t much of a winter where I live this year, I’ll take this week of cold before the spring/summer weather arrives. Have a great Tuesday!
The Mrs @ Success Along the Weigh says
It’s chilly here too this morning. I just tried to remote start my car and it crossed it’s tires and said “Hmmph!” So I had to go outside and start it manually. I just ran it yesterday when it was 70! PLEASE! I thought *I* had a temperment! HA!
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Yum, sweet + salty is the best!! Sounds like a perfect bowl of oatmeal. Old man winter came back to Ohio, too – hopefully he’ll quickly find what he forgot and head back to the North Pole soon 🙂
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
I love the reflection of the tablecloth on the bowl – at first I thought the bowl had the same pattern!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Those oats look so good, especially with the peanuts on top! I haven’t made oats with chia seeds in ages, I need to do that!
Maria @ Sinfully Nutritious says
That bowl looks so good, I think I may make oats for lunch.
Sana says
Don’t worry, it will be back into the 70’s before you know it!
kathleen @ the daily crumb says
it’s chilly here as well! i took my morning walk in a puffy vest! ready for the warm temps to return 🙂 your post reminded me i haven’t had chias in forever!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
It was 22 degrees here when I woke up and I really wanted a hot bowl of oats too but then I looked at the clock and realized I overslept by 30 minutes and that went out the window. Trying to warm up with coffee now but it’s still not doing the trick! Where did those spring temps go?!
Mattie @ Comfy and Confident says
The weather is so bizarre! Last week it was 85 and today it is 27. Brrrrr… I was so excited to start running outside more, but I guess I am going to have to wait a little longer.
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
The beautiful weather last week seems to have just been a trick! Oh well :/
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Old man Winter has certainly arrived here in Southern Ontario! I was shocked yesterday morning when I stepped outside, in what seemed like a glorious sunny warm day, to frigid temperatures and a gail force wind! I had to totally revamp my day’s attire! Today is another deceivingly sunny day with an icy chill on the side! I remember having to constantly be snacking to avoid my nausea whilst pregnant! I think it sets you up for when you have kids…I never leave the house without snacks for the kids!
Laura @ Sprint 2 the Table says
I hope that cold stays with you guys! I’m loving our So Cal-esque weather. Those oats still look good though!
Cait's Plate says
It’s FREEZING here in the Northeast! I spent the weekend in North Carolina and coming back to these 30 degree temps was NOT fun. It was definitely a morning for hot oats! 🙂
Anna @ On Anna's Plate says
We had the same type thing happen over the weekend…but now we’re back up in the high seventies 🙂
~Christy @ wonderofallthings says
We had the chill with us yesterday but back to unseasonably warm today. Your oats look fantastic as always. YUM!
Jasper Naomi @ crunchylittlebites says
I had an overnight oats fail this morning 🙁 it wasn’t sweet at ALL! But that’s probably because I added no sweetener of any kind…plus I used regular milk instead of almond (which usually adds some sweetness) nonetheless I fixed it up by crumbling some granola atop :)…I know you care 😉 almost 1.5 weeks until I shop your GH…
Lauren @ Oatmeal after Spinning says
I left my house at 4:50 this morning to teach spin class, and it was 31 degrees!!! Yikes! I hope this isn’t a trend or signs that we’ll have a cold April to make up for a warm March!
I LOVE peanuts on top of oatmeal- that sweet + salty combo is where it’s AT.
Sarena (The Non-Dairy Queen) says
We have the windows open today! It feels amazing. I may suffer from letting pollen in, but I think it’s worth it in the end for some fresh air. Have a great day Kath!
Eva @TheHealthyParty says
What is this TJ’s cookie butter!? I must investigate!
Awesome idea to throw chia seeds into oatmeal!
KathEats says
It’s the Trader Joe’s version of Biscoff

I love the color combination of the bowl and placemat!

I kinda wish the temperatures here would drop just so I could eat oatmeal- it’s tooo hot otherwise!
Averie @ Averie Cooks says
The thing with pregnancy (and then with nursing!) is that yes, you can and do get fiercely hungry on the drop of a dime…like from 0 to 60 in about 2 seconds, out of the blue. Glad the midnight snacks are working for you to tame the hunger beast 🙂
Liz @ Tip Top Shape says
Old Man Winter is paying Chicago a visit, too! It’s insane because last week we were in the mid 80s and yesterday temps were in the 40s!
Kristin point says
When I as pregnant I always had to have a midnite snack. At first I’d wait in bed thinking I didn’t NEED a snack but I couldn’t get back to sleep and I knew I just needed that snack! I usually just had a piece of whole wheat toast with peanut butter and it did the trick. Sometimes I would have a small mug of cereal instead that worked too.
Shannon @ My Place In The Race says
The oats look great! And you have the cutest mugs! 😀
Life's a Bowl says
It was a chilly morning in DC too! I definitely prefer the warmer weather we’ve been having… I thought about making a bowl of oats but waffles sounded more appealing 😛
Jacqueline says
How weird, yesterday I was in a Christmas mood too! I even busted out my snowman spatula to make dessert with! That bowl of oatmeal looks good enough to dive into!
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I like a little chill in the air–it is still Spring after all 😉 Hah.
Jamie @ Don't Forget the Cinnamon says
Mmmm I love the sweet and salty oatmeal idea! I have to try that!
It’s cold here too–20 degrees when I woke up this morning!!!
Stepheny @ GUSD says
Oh how I love Trader Joe’s Cookie Butter. I really don’t know that there is anything healthy in it, but it’s a great test for me to enjoy all things in moderation. I enjoyed a tablespoon last night on toast… and then two more tablespoons on an apple :-/ I counted all the calories for it, but I’m still working on moderation.
jojo says
If I posted all the things I ate throughout the day, it would be a loooooong list! I snack a lot throughout the day! It is not rare that I just end up eating lunch or dinner consisting of snacks, usually pretty healthy ones 🙂
I love oatmeal on a cold day!
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
A yummy bowl of oats never fails!
j3nn says
I woke up to a 64 degree F bedroom!!! I thought spring was here?? Mother Nature fooled me. 🙁
Gillian says
I’m not pregnant, but I seem to have spent my life preparing to be so. I have always had the smallest bladder, nausea, and always need a midnight snack (and sometimes another in the middle of the night). I’m sure I’ve got lots more in store for when the day comes!
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama says
I’m not happy with the change in temperatures. It’s freezing here in NH! Hot oatmeal and tea were what my body was craving this morning, too. I guess summer isn’t here yet!
amina says
Hey Kath,
Are you ever getting up in the middle of the night to eat? I’m 13.5 weeks along and keep finding that I wake up STARVING in the middle of the night! The only way for me to fall back asleep is to feed myself!
KathEats says
That happened to me a few times around 14/15 weeks, but not as much anymore. Try having a snack before bedtime – I think that helps (esp. one with a little fat/protein)
JessicaE says
Between 9-15 weeks I was often starving in the middle of the night. I am now almost 24 weeks and it seems to have leveled out a bit,
britt says
it’s down right hot down here in texas. but i’m thoroughly enjoying it. my little guy is old enough to play outside in the sprinkler now so he LOVES it. which makes me love it 🙂
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
I needed some hot oatmeal/oatbran this morning too!
