I unwound with a great long walk this afternoon. Shout out to mom, who is wise as an owl!
I had mild nausea all day today, so I chugged some OJ before my walk and took a Great Harvest Temecula Trek bar with me to nibble on if I needed some fuel mid-way through. [I did.]
Matt and went on a date night this evening. When we want to rekindle the flame, we go one of two places:
Sonoma Wine Country
[Honeymoon 2007]
[Anniversary 2010]
Or…
Brixx Pizza!
Brixx was founded in Charlotte and we spent many-a-night devouring their wood-fired pizzas, great salads and pints of beer in college at the Birkdale location. We completed the MBA club and probably went every Friday night our sophomore year. It remains one of our very favorite restaurants, and it’s so cool that a franchise opened in Cville last year!
We had a coupon for a free app with the purchase of two pizzas arrive in the mail today, and once I had Brixx on the brain, the thought of anything else for dinner made me nauseous. Yet I could imagine myself eating a Brixx spinach salad [it has a special taste + dressing that was appealing] and pizza.
Good timing that the Duke – Carolina game was on! Sadly the game did not go in our favor 🙁
I didn’t order my own beer sampler like the good old days – but Matt enjoyed his
But my club soda was pretty bubbly, so I didn’t miss much
We shared a spinach salad our server was kind enough to put in two bowls – I ate every leaf!
And then dove into these!
A Spicy Shrimp (we always get this one!)
And an Americo, which sometimes replaces the Wild Mushroom, Mexican or Quattro Formaggio. We only ate half and have a good amount left for Monday’s lunch/dinner!
Also included the Barracks Road coupon book that came today was a BOGO coupon for Ben & Jerry’s. Guess the shopping center’s marketing strategy worked, because the coupons got us in the door and spending money at both places!
I had a Bonoroo Buzz and Matt, Cookie Dough.
Although we had a coupon, I was shocked to read on the menu that a SMALL CONE costs $4.13! I thought ice cream cones were supposed to be $1.50 or something!? I must be stuck in the 80s. That makes my $9.99 pint to Jeni’s all the more appealing when you think you can get 3 good servings out of it…
LOST, then sleep!
Sana says
Pizza and ice cream! I wish I could have crashed your date night! Just kiddddding 🙂
Ashley @ Coffee Cake and Cardio says
Yummy!! What a fun night!
Nicole says
I think a scoop of Jeni’s is $5, but $1 more you can get the trio, which is three scoops- a great way to indulge in multiple flavors. I live in the birthplace of Jeni’s ice cream, so there are scoop shops around the city. Crazy prices, but delicious.
You could always try your hand at making her recipes with her book. I’ve made two with success and am eager to try more this summer.

I don’t have an ice cream maker, or I would!
Mindy says
Pizza…mmmm I can’t get enough!
I love the Bonnaroo Buzz, too. When I went to Bonnaroo 2011, I had a cone nearly everyday!
Anna@ActiveFingers says
Pizza and ice cream are a wonderful combination! I currently live in a small town in the mid-west and you can get ice cream cones cheaply. The best part is I can walk to the store for the ice cream 🙂
Lea @ Healthy Coconut says
I’m the same with ice cream prices….I am stuck with my childhood favorite Ice Cream from Thrifty’s (now called Rite-Aid) and they only cost around $2 for 2 huge scoops. Now I go into these more gourmet ice cream shops and can’t believer the prices nowadays. But it still doesn’t stop me from buying it though.
Jen says
Nice night! How tall are you guys?
I love the crust on those pizzas. Does Matt ever play make different pizza crust or does he stick with the usual thick one we see on your blog?
KathEats says
I’m 5’2″ and he’s 6′. Why do you ask?
We like a bit of chew to our crusts at home, so we make them medium
KathEats says
Oh duh, photos of our heights 🙂
Jen says
LOL – yes, the photos! I was just wondering how much of a difference there was – y’all are adorable 🙂
Kerry @ Totes My Oats says
Love date nights! That pizza looks great… oh how I love good pizza! And I can’t get over how much ice cream costs out either!
Michelle (Better with Berries) says
Love your honeymoon pic – so cute!
Paige @ Healthy Hits the Spot says
Looks like such a fun night! Enjoy LOST 🙂
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Ice cream by the scoop can be highway robbery…It’s like you just “have to” buy the pint 🙂
Have a great Sunday, Kath!
Dena @ 40 Fit in the Mitt says
I have not had a hand dipped ice cream cone all winter, that looks so good
j3nn says
I had an ice cream tonight too and was sticker-shocked — $3.56 for a small! When we owned an ice cream stand, our small was $1 (soft serve) and $1.35 for gelato. Dairy has gone up, up, up — but what hasn’t? Sigh.
Those pizzas are awesome. Very akin to NY pizza, so it gets a pass. 🙂
Susan H. @ The Food Allergy Chronicles says
Now that is my idea of a date night! Love the thin crust fire roasted pizza’s and ice cream in a waffle cone…heaven!
Krystina (Krystina Zena) says
I wanted to spend my night with pizza and ice cream, and instead I spent it with Publix subs and coffee. 😛
Caroline @ After Dinner Dance says
Mmm wood fired pizza is the BEST!
Meagan says
I know how you feel, I never have gone back to B&J’s again after I paid over 5 dollars for one measly scoop. Ice cream shouldn’t be so expensive.
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
I love date night!! When it includes pizza and ice cream it makes it a total blast. Looks like the perfect night to me. Sleep well!
Jess says
There is a gelato place in central Auckland that has the best gelato in the world, but it is around $6 for a cone, so it is a real treat!
The pizzas look good, but too much crust for me. I’m a ‘toppings to the edge’ kinda girl!
Lindsay @ Fuel My Family says
Pizza and ice cream sounds amazing! at least the BOGO makes each one only slightly over $2, which is at least reasonable. I prefer buying a 2.50 half galon and making it last a couple nights. Unless its date night and then its a huge thing of froyo that costs 5 bucks but oh so worth it since about 3 bucks of that is undercooked fudgy brownie pieces!
Katie @ Talk Less, Say More says
Pizza and ice cream sounds like the perfect date night! And delicious too! 🙂
Angel7 says
That is kind of pricey for a small icecream cone! It is okay to indulge every now and again, though, and especially for a pregnancy craving 🙂

Delicious Saturday night but wow ice cream prices have shot up- long gone are the days that fro yo was the more expensive of the 2!
Katie @ Peace Love & Oats says
Well that cone looks pretty awesome for just $1.50! Looks like an amazing date night to me, hope you had a great time!
dee says
Yay for date night! Those pizza’s look yum! And ice cream is THE perfect way to end the night. Have a good one! 🙂
Stephanie @ Legally Blinde says
Ooh, wood-fired pizza sounds great, and having leftovers is so nice. I really like leftover pizza! Those waffle cones look ahhhhmazing, yum 🙂
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
What a fun date night!!!! And I’ll admit, one of the reasons that I am so excited to be moving to Charlotte is to be around fabulous restaurants like Brixx!
Hannah @ Sparrow + Spark! says
That’s my kind of date night! The only pizza place near us is Pizza Hut, so I love finding great places when out and about. They look delicious!
Aylin @ Glow Kitchen says
Shrimp on pizza can’t go wrong. Looks amazing!
Angela @ Happy Fit Mama says
Love wood fired pizza! We have Flatbread Company which is out of this world. It’s so fun to watch them make your pizza and then put it in their big fireplace/oven. Mmmm…I think a trip to Flatbread is going to happen very soon!
Simply Life says
Pizza, ice cream, a date with your husband and a good call with your mom = sounds like a fabulous combo 🙂
Kristen @ Change of Pace says
We have a Brixx here and we rarely go. We need to go more often. I love being able to order whole wheat crust and you are right about the salads. They are delicious!
mel says
Everything looks delicious!
Brittnie (A Joy Renewed) says
What a yummy dinner. Ice cream IS very pricey these days! I worked at Maggie Moos back in high school (first job) and I thought it was expensive then…. nothing compared to the prices now. We usually just buy ice cream at the store and enjoy at home, unless we are going out for fro yo. 🙂
Erica says
We have a brixx and love it too! They always have a living social/groupon deal and we snatch them up! Super expensive ice cream- but looks fantastic. Have a good Sunday!
Cait's Plate says
I LOVE Brixx! I go to the Dilworth location in Charlotte. It’s SO good!
Andrea @ The Skinny Chronicles says
Three cheers for date night. Who needs to come all the way out to California when you have pizza at home?!?
Ice cream cone prices are definitely a racket these days…
Fran@ Broken Cookies Don't Count says
Not sure which looks better…the pizza or the ice cream. Both!!
Samantha says
<3 U guys!
Lauren says
Hey Kath, The Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor is actually spelled “Bonnaroo Buzz” 🙂 it’s named after the (AWESOME) Bonnaroo Music Festival in TN. Hope that helps!
KathEats says
Spelling has never been my strong suit 🙂 My brother in law has been to Bonnaroo several times!
~Christy @ wonderofallthings says
Looks fantastic!!! I adore pizza and Pizza Friday is what we do as often as possible. Such a fantastic treat 🙂 I totally agree with you about the B&J prices…but it’s sooooooo good!
