On Sunday, Thomas and I drove to Williamsburg for the soft opening of Old City BBQ. Thomas’s cousin, Mason, is one of the three owners. Many of Thomas’s cousins, aunts, and uncles came to the opening to celebrate. Have I mentioned before what an awesome family he has?
The whole night I heard everyone talking about the decor and details, how so-and-so made the sign, so-and-so helped order the light fixtures, how the tables were refinished and stamped with the Old City logo. The building was a steakhouse for years prior, so the guys really brought the interior up to modern times with touches of vintage feeling.
Thomas’s Aunt Nancy found the bathroom sinks, which were really cool cement! Also loved the fixtures and mirrors : )
They have a full bar with signature cocktails and both draft beer and wine!
The owners, who are also the chefs, have been smoking meat and working in restaurants for years and have always talked about opening their own. This is their year! The menu features Southern favorites, all with a gourmet twist. For example, the pimento cheese was smoked! The wings were the juiciest and most flavorful that I’ve ever had. The upper left corner below — those are pig ears! Old City’s tagline is “whole hog cookin'” and they don’t let anything go to waste.
Everything
We shared a sampler for the opening, and so we got to taste most of the offerings. My favorites were the collard greens, which were amazing, spicy and smoked, and the ribs, which were the best I’ve ever had. I also loved the tacos, mac and cheese, pimento cheese, and pork belly!
If you are ever in Williamsburg, you must stop in to Old City BBQ! Ask for Mason and tell him you are a friend of Kath Eats 🙂 Check them out Instagram and Facebook!

Pig ears are delicious! So much collagen from the skin 🙂 I’m guessing you’re not a huge fan of offal Meats like hearts, tribe, and bone marrow?

I love when BBQ joints offer different sides than the traditional mac n cheese, coleslaw, and cornbread. While delicious, it gets redundant! We recently went to a BBQ restaurant that served pimento cheese as an appetizer. Wonder if it’s becoming the new thing!

Just like with overnight oats and smoothies in a bowl, Kath’s way ahead of the pimento cheese trend 😉
