Went to cycle class this morning!!! I haven’t been in ages, but I used to go 3-4 times a week when my foot was recovering from surgery. I get sick of it easily now, but I do love a good class every now and then.
Today’s theme was the Olympics! In addition to all the Olympic + American music, he played the Canadian National Anthem. Did you know I know all the words!?!
Matt’s college roommate, appropriately nicknamed "Canada," is from Toronto, so Matt and I memorized the words to please him.
Here they are in 2001 sporting their countries. Don’t ask.
Cycle was good! I kept the resistance a bit easier to let my legs spin out yesterday’s run.
Came home and was TOTALLY ready for this awesome breakfast!!

- 1/4 cup oats
- 2 tbsp Bob’s Red Mill Apple Cinnamon Hot Cereal

Mara @ What's For Dinner? says
You get SLUGS in your bathroom??? Those would freak me out way more than roaches! I can’t wait for Spring Blend either! You inspired me to try it last year, and I’ve been rationing it out since… i have a tiny bit left…
Courtney says
I love the Canadian national anthem…I find it to be very stirring and I love listening to the full arena singing along. After the great game the Canadian hockey players put on last night I’m sure a lot of people are singing the good ol song today.

The Canada – Russia hockey game was great last night! So fun to have an olympic themed spin class…it would make me work so much harder!
Beth @ DiningAndDishing says
I tried out spinning the other day – man is that class HARD!! I think I almost passed out. Plus, my butt still hurts! I totally admire you for going 3-4 days/week back in the day!
Sarah (Running to Slow Things Down) says
I’m going to my first cycling class on Saturday…can’t wait! It’s actually my first group class, period, so I’m a little anxious to see how it flows. 😀
Lovely breakfast! What a great way to refuel from your workout. 😀
Teri [a foodie stays fit] says

Lauren says
It’s crazy to think how many people are still sleeping out there, and you’ve already kicked butt in spin class!
rustique says
Haha, your husband is hilarious. Those oats are preflavored but still low in sugar by the looks of it–love Bob’s Red Mill.
Jen says
I already ate breakfast, yet that oatmeal makes me want to eat it again!
Sarah says
Ha, that picture is too funny! Your green french press is so cute 🙂

I can’t imagine spinning to the Canadian anthem and I’M Canadian, maybe it was like a remix of it?!?!
Andrea says
I love to see old college pics. I look back on college as one of the happiest times in my life, so seeing anything related to it just brings a smile to my face.
Your napkin ring is gorgeous, love the pewter-tone!
Have a great day!
Heather @ Side of Sneakers says
I only know the words because I’ve heard them sung so many times during this Olympics!!
Karla says
Your oats look delicious as usual! LOVE the napkin ring!!
Rose-Anne says
Oh my God, that picture of Matt and his roommate made me laugh out loud! I love it! And your coffee picture really does look like a slug. He’s not on his way to eat your oats, is he? Uh-oh… 😉
I miss bike-riding so much these days. I have to get a bike so I can ride around town this spring–it will be so much fun.
katherine says
I know what you mean about spin class. Too much of the same instructor starts to get very boring, unless they keep mixing it up all the time. Nice to have an alternative after a long run though. Have a great day!
Jocelyn says
I’m Canadian! So obviously I know my own national anthem 😉
Meredith says
Yesterday was a VERY exciting day for us Canadians – we won 4 medals and played a great game of hockey against Russia last night!!
And yes, I know all of the words to my national anthem 😉
True story: I was working on Canada Day in 2002 at the CN Tower. Some of the guests asked me if I knew the words and if I would sing it for them. I am by no means an excellent singer, but I sung those words with pride!! They even clapped for me when I was done, probably because they didn’t have to hear my voice any more! Anyway, it made me feel very proud of my country and to be a Canadian!
Kathleen says
Cinnamon Vanilla Sunflower Butter …..I have it ordered, can’t wait to try it! I guess great minds think alike, I woke up thinking pumpkin in my oatmeal. I’m on the weat coast so I’m still finishing my first sup of Joe(I use the automatic kind so all I have to do is pour) but will be in the kitchen soon for my yummy breakfast.
Kathleen says
Sorry that’s WEST coast!
Lindsay says
I love spin! do you have a pair of spin shoes? I have gotten slightly-obsessed with the classes at my local gym..I just can’t get enough! I hope I don’t tire myself out too. I try to give myself breaks and switch up workouts but it is such a great class 🙂 have a greaaaaat day!
Kath says
Yep! I bought them after my third class and wouldn’t do spin without them
Lauren @ eater not a runner says
Sounds like a great class! Your pumpkin extravaganza looks lovely 🙂
Sarah R says
I tweeted yesterday, but just had to comment. I got my cinnamon, vanilla sunflower butter yesterday and you weren’t kidding! I’ve had a hard time keeping my spoon out of the jar. So delicious!
Kath says
Woo hoo!! Mine is almost gone!!
Amy Botta says
I saw the title of this post and was a little confused at first… that’s really funny that you know the Canadian anthem, I also know the American anthem, because an American friend made me learn the words!
darryn (brio.gusto) says
I’m Canadian, so I know ALL the words to that song! 😉 It’s a pretty hokey anthem, if you ask me. But then again, what anthem isn’t? haha.
Katy (The Balanced Foodie) says
Your oatmeal always looks incredible!! I have a question, do you eat before you workout in the mornings? Some people do and some people don’t so I was curious! 🙂
Kath says
Not when I go at 5 (unless I’m particularly starving one day). But if I have to wait more than an hour from rising till my workout, I have to eat or I will get too hungry.
JENNA says
Your pumpkin oats look dreamy!! 🙂 yum!
Do you think now that you’ve been running outside more that being in the gym seems boring? OR do you think you are able to push yourself more in the gym atmosphere?
Kath says
Actually, yeah, I do. I’m a little worn out of the gym. Running outside and training gives so much meaning to a workout that it’s made me enjoy the cardio machines less. but I could just be in a rut!
Monica @ Musings of the Granola Girl` says
That bowl & spoon are to DIE for! Where do you find such great tableware?!
I’ve noticed that we share the same love for ALL things pumpkin, I love seeing all the pumpkin recipes you post 🙂

Jil says
I have always wanted to take a cycle class — but I’ve always been so nervous that I’ll… embarrass myself…or die…or both. haha 🙂 Love the oats!!! Yum, yum, yum. Have a faabulous day!
Twyla says
I love that spoon!
Alexandra says
Hi! I love your blog but never comment and thought I would today because I am a Canadian reader! I just wanted to say that I’m impressed that you know the Canadian national anthem, and that us Canadians love your blog!
Kath says
Thanks for your first comment!

What a lovely candlelit breakfast! That spoon is to die for! I’m Canadian and from Vancouver so Olympic fever is allll over!
The Wife of a Dairyman ~ Nancy says
I will be going to spin class today. Same goes for me…I used to go to class 3 or 4 times a week but now I only go two and try to do something else on the other two days. Going to spin too often, makes for a quick burn-out.
Eileen says
I don’t know any words except “Oh, Canada,” but it sure is a pretty melody! After a few more awards ceremonies, I might be able to flesh it out a bit. ; )
Matt is much cuter now! That is a great pic, though.
Hannah says
I’m so envious right now. I’ve been kinda mentioning my own cold in keeping wiht yours (I’m rather self-focused :P) and while yours seems to be bette,r mine’s progressed from blocked head + awful pain to loss of sense of taste, which is kinda worse. I’m travelling, in Europe, first time ever, and I can’t taste a thing. Would give anything for the taste of your pumpkin oats right now!
Kath says
Haha – The Cold War!
Hannah says
Haha! Exactly. And thanks for not teasing me about all the typos in my message :S Blaming the cold still!
Diana says
Bring on the Spring Blend! I def think it’s FM’s best seasonal coffee! 🙂
Ashley says
Ohhh my gosh…there is that one commercial where they say “extravaganzaaaaaaaaaaaa” all crazy…what is that for!? Love the name for the oats hehe
Sarah Ikegami says
Mmm! I love the idea of more protein in your oats with the C.C. Do you have other ideas for more protein, dairy free? I’ve thought of PB, AB, eggs, hemp protein mix…
Kath says
I think you’ve hit all the biggies.
Ally (Exercise and Pies) says
I love pumpkin everything and sadly I keep forgetting it when I go to the store! and Sarah- try adding some egg whites into your oats, you can’t taste them and it’s an easy way to add in some protein 🙂
Bronwyn says
Go Canada!
As a Vancouverite I can say it’s CRAZY here. But in the best way possible, it’s honestly the best atmosphere. everyone is happy, even when we lose. Not that it happens too often, 😉 four medals in one day! yay!
Ali says
I’m also a Vancouverite, and agree with Bronwyn that it’s CRAZY here right now….we were watching the hockey game yesterday afternoon (obviously, haha) and whenever Canada scored we could hear the whole city cheer. It’s all going to seem so quiet when it’s over ;(
sarah @ syrupandhoney says
You’ve probably already addressed this so I apologize in advance but couldn’t find the answer to my question! When do you add chia seeds to your oats? (as in: before cooking, while cooking, etc). I just got my first batch of chia seeds in the mail so thanks for your help!
Kath says
I put them in the pot in the beginning with the oats, milk, water, banana, and salt.
sarah @ syrupandhoney says
Thanks a million!
Jennifer says
I definitely know the words since I am a proud Maritimer (Nova Scotia!). It was ingrained in my mind from Elementary School! I love your website! I recommend it to everyone! 🙂
Kristilyn (My 29th Year) says
I’m Canadian, so I hope I know the words! Although, I admit my piano skills aren’t there with our national anthem … maybe I’ll have to work on it!
I hate slugs! Anything that crawls! We had a tiny little centipede in our kitchen last night and I freaked out … the husband said it’s from all the ORGANIC PRODUCE we buy! LOL!
I love spin class … I’m hoping to join a group in the spring and they meet once a week – that’s enough for me! I like to mix it up during the week. 🙂

Hehe, love Matt’s hair from back in the day 😛
Kath says
My grandmother! She gave me a bunch of antique spoons.
Ash @ Good Taste. Healthy Me says
ugh I hear you on the bored with spin. I’m getting so bored with cardio in general. It’s definitely affecting my workouts. I gotta spice it up somehow!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
TFM Spring Blend is the best!!!! I’m sick of the ones that I have now. It should be out soon I hope!
Your oats sound yummy!
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
that spoon is GORGEOUS! such a great bowl of oats…now i wish that’s what i’d eaten instead of a black bean burger for breakfast! 🙂
Heather @ Get Healthy With Heather says
I miss pumpkin in my oats! Your bowl makes me want some now.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
did you cook your oats in water?
Kath says
Ha – yeah! Oops!

First, new here but enjoy reading your blog! Second, OK can someone please explain the oats thing to me? I’m new to the whole healthy eating/running/blogging scene and I’m kind of confused haha. I’ve had the instant Quaker kind before-they’re ok and all, but I feel like I’m missing something?
Kath says

Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
I absolutely love cycle. I even own one because I love it so much.
Lana says
So I’m wondering….do you feel okay when you go straight from bed to the gym without eating? I am usually too nervous to try it, afraid I won’t have the energy for a good, strong workout. Do you recommend one versus the other (ie eating vs not) from a nutritional standpoint? Is there any added advantage to exercise on an empty stomach?
🙂 Thanks
Kath says
Yes, I do feel OK or I would eat something! I also would fuel up if I were going to do a really hard or long workout. The reason I don’t eat first is I’ve found through trial that I’m mostly thirsty when I wake up. So I guzzle my water bottle while I’m exercising and that’s enough to delay breakfast by an hour.
Generally workouts less than 60 minutes don’t require any kind of fuel loading like a longer 10 mile run would.
Eating or not is totally up to you and your timing and hunger!
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
I just bought some of the Bob’s apple cinnamon hot cereal. I hadn’t thought about mixing part of that with my oatmeal. I’m going to give that a try.
Simply Life says
ooh that does look really good!
