I was a little slow getting up this morning. When the husband is gone I get to listen to the radio (he HATES music in the morning) so I was jammin’ under the covers
to some tunes and forgot I was supposed to be getting up for the gym!I finally made it there and had a cardio party on the elliptical and squirrelliptical. About an hour total, plus some stretching (down dogs!) at the end.
I’ve been adding so much pumpkin to my oats it’s more like oatmeal pumpkin than pumpkin oatmeal! This bowl was SO filling – in a good way!
The Mix:
- 1/3 cup oats, milk, water, pinch salt, tiny banana, 1 tbsp raisins
- 1/2 cup (+/-?) pumpkin, stirred in at end
- Few drops vanilla extract
- 1 tbsp ground flax
- A few peanuts, raisins and M&Ms from Tj’s Rainbow Trail Mix
- A few crushed walnuts
- 5 butterscotch chips
- Spoonful Smucker’s Natural
A beautiful French press. I find FP to be a bit more chalky tasting than brewed, but not really in a bad way. I love the froth on top!!! It’s gone in a few sips, but it’s so pretty. I can’t wait until Fresh Market’s Spring Blend comes out again. Anyone seen it??
Got my vitamin again.
Loooong day ahead. Let the festivities begin!

Your oats look divine!
Oh and Kath, what’s your take on this: On the spinning bike, after 45 minutes of sweating like a monster and feeling kinda out of breath, the little thingie on the bike says I only burned a measly 238 cals or so. What gives?! I feel so frustrated I have stopped spinning classes, as I think I burn more cals running or on the elliptical.
Thanks.

Kath – Your oatmeal looks so good. When i first looked I thought you had M&M’s in it – it was so colorful. Then I did a full read and indeed you do!! I love it.
Hope you have a great morning.

Kath-
This might be a really strange question or something you have already answered… not sure either way! But… your coffee always looks soooo good!!! I currently have my mother’s coffee maker from COLLEGE and desperately need something new!! What do you use??? I am always so jealous of your coffee in the morning hahah! Sorry for the bizarre question!!
Kath says
jennifer ,
I’d say you should increase your resistance. According to my heart rate monitor, sometimes I’m sweating a ton and feeling like I’m working hard by my HR is only at about 135-145. I increase the resistance and while it is harder on the legs, my HR increases to about 150-160, and thus so do calories burned. Try doing that and see if your reading is higher. Are you using a cycle bike or a stationary bike? The ones in my cycle class are also a lot harder than general upright stat. bikes. 250 seems about right for 45 minutes or so on an upright bike. Should be closer to 400 if you’re working hard on a cycle bike.

Hey Kath!
I’ve been reading your blog for a while now and wanted to introduce myself and ask you a question. I’m really interested in starting yoga but I don’t know if it makes sense to download a class without having taken a live class first. Have you taken live classes? Do you think the downloads are doable without having gone?
Thanks so much!
Emily

ok i could not get the link to show up, but what is a squirreliptical?! There is this machine at my gym that I have been using and it looks sort of like an elipitical and its placed right amongst all the elipticals and I have never known what it is!
Jennifer says
Hi Kath – I probably have a stupid question but here it goes. When you do your breakfast like today are your oats cooked or raw? If they were raw it would be so much easier. Or do you cook your oats and then throw the rest in? Thanks so much for your lovely posts! Jennifer in Boise, Idaho!

Great oatmeal. My morning started the same way, nice work out( I did a spin class) and home to my oatmeal with flax! I need to start adding more stuff, like you do. I think the pumpkin sounds great.
Have a great day and enjoy your music!

I am out of nut butters and nuts of all kinds this morning so I am eating a veggie breakfast stir fry instead. i have a question re: heart monitor. I wear mine all the time when I work out. Some days the numbers seem too good to be true. For example, I burn around 800ish calories in a hour when many of you burn around 500. I notice this is the case when I work out to the Biggest Loser’s BootCamp videotape and work out on the elliptical afterwards. On any other days when I don’t, I do just cardio and burn around 500 in a hour. Is the 800ish calories burned realistic?? I know heart monitors are pretty accurate but 800? I should be skinny bitty but i’m not!

Kath, ever since I started reading your blog I cannot stop eating oatmeal all the time!! I have been throwing in the craziest things, and I love it!! Katie S,
You must be new 🙂 We used to brew in our cappuccino maker but I broke that 2 weeks ago and have been making French press coffee for the past few weeks. I don’t think it’s anything special but it does taste good and it works for now.
Emily ,
The downloads are much easier than a class. Just make sure you study the pose guide first and start with a beginner class.
Jennifer ,
You must be new too!! They are always cooked. Check the Tribute to Oatmeal page at the top.
Andrea,
I just add milk. I heat it in the microwave (about 1 oz) before I add my coffee to it so as not to cool the coffee down at all. And I’ve always heard add acid to base not base to acid.
jatem ,
Harris Teeter brand one-a-day women’s.
HangryPants ,
I do add milk (before) but it’s the coffee that’s frothing.
kristin ,
What is your average heart rate during an 800-calorie workout? That does seem very high. Can you run 8 miles in an hour? That’s a good test. Your max running speed is often a good gauge of how many calories you can potentially burn in an hour. (Not to say you couldn’t burn more with intervals).
Laura ,
Thanks!
Megan ,
Yup! Just a can of plain pumpkin. Libby’s 100% Pure is the most common but I’ve used a few organic kinds too and like those as well.
