Just had an all-American lunch break!! Left my office and strolled down a delightful downtown to grab something to eat in the nice weather.
Not sure how many Americans go out for vegetable juice, but I did!!
Berrybrook Farm is one of Charlotte’s few true health food stores. And they have a tiny juice bar that serves juices, sandwiches and soups where you can get lunch to go. Lucky for me and this awesome work location, it was a 5 minute walk!
The menu was quite hectic to read, but I decided I wanted a juice and a sandwich of sorts.
I went straight to the wildest, most vegetable-filled juice I could find: The Everything.
Contents (which I wrote on the back of my receipt to remember)
- Carrot
- Beet
- Cabbage
- Apple
- Kale
- Spinach
- Parsley
- Ginger
- Green pepper
And garlic, which I politely asked them to exclude!
The juice was vegetably all right!! Not exactly a palate pleaser, but it tasted amazing because I knew it was so nutrient dense 🙂 Wasn’t bad though!
I was killin’ for some hummus but sadly they only have that on Mondays, so I got an avocado + veggie wrap on a whole wheat tortilla. It came with a lemon-garlic dressing (asked them to go light ’cause of garlic breath!). The wrap was very fresh and totally delicious!! Had avocado (not very much though), cucumber, carrot, lettuce and cabbage (hold the onions!)
I ate on a porch swing with a stump for a table!
I sort of wish I’d asked to add in some black beans or something into my wrap because I’m not sure how filling this will be, but I wasn’t terribly hungry going into lunch (hello pumpkin oats!) so I think this was just what I needed (I feel 100% satisfied). I’ll have an early snack if need be. Intuitive eating!
But to balance all of my nutrient-dense lunch bites, I had a few Jelly Bellys from the office jar. I offered to eat down the licorice stash for them! I love licorice.
Happy afternooooooooon!
Freya @ Brit Chick Runs says
Oh that place sounds amaze!! That juice..wow, could they get much more in!? I definetly would’ve included the garlic though – screw garlic breath, i just love garlic 😛 I must smell so bad lol!!
Have a good afternoon 🙂
Heather (Heather's Dish) says
that’s incredibly nutritious! love the color of the juice (although I’m not sure I would be able to drink it!) the wrap sounds right up my alley though, but you’re right – hummus would definitely be a little better 🙂 hope you enjoy the rest of your day!
Jessica @ The Process of Healing says
Call me crazy but that juice sounds awesome!!!! As does the wrap 🙂
Diana says
I LOVE that place! and you got the same juice I got the last time I was there!
They sell chia seeds there in their bulk spices, too. 🙂
Nora@ LiveLifeEatRight says
I recently have been trying fresh juices..I’M IN LOVE!!! My yoga studio has a organic cafe/juice bar and I have been getting them for the drive home after class. I am contemplating getting a juicer to make my own and spare myself the $6 juice cost. Do you own one? Can you suggest a brand/type. I want to make lots of vegtable and fruit drinks this summer, and it would probably be just for me. Thanks 🙂
Kath says
I have the Breville Juice Fountain Plus and it’s amazing. Works great!

I want a juice wagon lunch!!! I’m thinking the girls and I need to get out the Radio Flyer and set up shop, no?
Julie @SavvyEats says
It would be like a high-scale, healthier lemonade stand!!
Jenna says
mmm that looks great- both the juice and wrap!
Beth @ Beth's Journey to Thin says
We have a little placed called the Juice Joint here in DC that does fresh juices, sandwiches, salads, etc. It’s only a 5 minute walk from my office and definitely my favorite place to go out when I don’t pack lunch!
Michele | aka Raw Juice Girl says
LOVE veggie juice!! I’d have gobbled it up for sure! 😉
And wraps are fantabulous, too.
Jessica @ How Sweet says
I think that juice sounds awesome!!!
Gabriela says
I think most of us bloggers would totally go out for a good vegetable juice 🙂 That wrap sounds great, what a balanced and nutritious lunch!!
Runeatrepeat says
I have been craving fresh juice, but don’t know where to get it around here 🙁 I used to hit up WF, but there isn’t one close…
Chloe (Naturally Frugal) says
My mom also loves licorice, but I can’t stand it! That juice looks delicious, and intuitive eating is definitely something I need to work on so I’m glad it’s always something that’s on your mind as well.
Lauren @ A Fit Foodie says
Looks like a satisfying lunch to me! I love that your table was a tree stump! Happy Thursday! It’s almost Friday!!!
Jenny says
Your lunch looks nutritious and delicious! I love it and need to recreate that kind of wrap for myself:)

Yum ! I wish there were more juice places here. I love me some carrot

Katherine,
You are a true inspiration! I am amazed with your blog. And your food choices. I thought I had a healthy lunch with tomato soup, swiss cheese and crackers. I gave up meat for lent. It has not been as tough as I thought it would be.
I am glad that you were in cycle class this morning. Especially after a good run yesterday!
Kath says
Hey Chuck!! Thanks for stopping by 🙂
Your lunch sounds pretty healthy to me!
Lauren @ Eater not a runner says
What a fun lunch place! I know it seems weird but I can’t find a place in boston to get fresh juice!
shannon (the daily balance) says
i LOVE places like this — there aren’t enough of them!!!
jam-nutrient-packed smoothie! NICE!
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I’m a huge fan of black licorice! Which happens to be everyones least favorite… more for me 🙂
Daniel says
So many healthy options around you! The “healthiest” choice I could probably make around here (besides going to the grocery store and getting some hopefully fresh produce) would be Subway.
I’d like to try vegetable juice sometime (not V8), is there a type or recipe you’d recommend for someone who is willing to try anything healthy but is looking for something tasty for their first juiced veggie drink? 😮
Kath says
Do you mean something you can buy vs. a juice recipe?
I’d see if there’s a place that juices in your area – perhaps a healthy grocery store type place?
Liz @ lizrunsdc says
America definitely needs more places like that!
JosephineTomato says
Just a suggestion on the AT&T front but they do have a twitter site – you might get faster action there.
clay says
I probably would have loved that veggie juice! I am just getting into green smoothies now and I am addicted! I didn’t think a drink with leafy green vegetables could actually taste good
Cristal says
I’ve just found all of these great foodblog sites and am totally hooked! I’m going shopping tomorrow for the oatmeal ingredients. I can’t wait to try it! Quick question for ya: I am running my first 10K and was wondering if you could suggest some good stretches to do after running. Thanks!
Kath says
Welcome!!
I’m really not the best stretcher…
I do the YogaDownload 20 minute sessions when I need a good stretch. After runs I tend to just do the basics – quads, hamstrings, calves. Lately I’m into the foam rollers!
Sarah-Mae says
Im a yoga instructor and I’ve been working on a yoga for runners series if you want to contact me I’d be happy to email you a list of stretches with some pictures!!!

AH i love that place! Everytime I get juice it tastes like straight carrot juice and is yuckyyyy. I think next time I will have half a mind to ask them to exclude the carrot? 🙂
Heather says
that health store sounds so cute! we have one like that but ts unfortunately about 25 minutes away
Lisa @bakebikeblog says
oooh that juice DOES look good! The colour is gorgeous 🙂
The Paris Food Blague says
looks like a nice lunch! not sure how tasty the juice is, but looks super healthy.
have a nice afternoon!
the paris food blague
ps they have lunch breaks overseas too, you know 😉 really long ones…
jaclyn@todays lady says
That lunch place sounds good! I’m not huge on vegetable juice but then again, the only vegetable juice I’ve ever had is V8……. something tells me that this is way better!
Erin (Travel, Eat, Repeat) says
That looks delicious, both the juice and the wrap. There’s a place called Boost Juice all over Australia that I wanted to try but it was REALLY expensive (like $7 for the smallest size) for something that would have been in addition to a meal, not a meal in itself. I can’t wait to get home and make my own! 😀
Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
I love juice bars– I always feel so virtuous drinking something like that 🙂
Tara says
I love places that have interesting and nutritious smoothies! That needs to be a bigger trend I think.
lynn (The Actors Diet) says
i like licorice jelly beans too – but only jelly beans! it’s weird.
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
What a neat stop for lunch! That juice sounds like a Nutrition Powerhouse!!!
Greg's 6 Simple Weight Loss Tips says
As always, everything looks delicious.
Paige(Running Around Normal) says
That place looks friggin’ awesome! You’d never find somewhere cool like that here in central Illinois.
The veggie wrap looks amazing:)
Stacey@http://stacey-healthylife.blogspot.com/ says
Wow what a great lunch spot, I wish their was something like that here. The wrap looked really good, I understand what you mean about the beans. Also a nice addition would have been rice or quonia.
Whitney says
I love the licorice jelly bellys too 😉 My dad and I used to fight over them…but I haven’t met anyone since who minds me taking them off their hands (aww, the joys of loving unpopular flavors)

Great looking lunch!
Jasmine (Sweet and Fit) says
that veggie juice looks amazing, I wish there were more places like that in the DC area!
garlic powder in veggie juice though, ewww! good move leaving it out =)
Sarah-Mae says
I agree about the veggie juice, it does LOOK appetizing! I think it’s simply the idea of a fresh juice that sounds the best though.
You inspired me to pop a couple of chewy caramels into my yoga bag. Hey, I ran 5 miles today, I’m allowed ^_^
Angie says
Sandwich looks awesome!
Just make sure you’re nice to the customer service person at ATT! They’re totally restricted by corporate rules and can’t always do what you want them to be able to do. And it isn’t the person’s fault.
My husband works at a call center and you wouldn’t believe the horrible things people scream at him. He understands what they want, but he’s limited by corporate rules. Trust me, those guys would fix it if they could! He is so defeated when he comes home. If people weren’t so mean, call centers wouldn’t have such high turnover and you’d get better customer service!
Kath says
I am very polite and nice!!! I just use powerful language like ” very disappointed customer” and what not. And tell them I work from home and this outage is costing me money. I’m in with the supervisors now.
Angie says
🙂
Makes me happy.
Wendy says
Hey Kath – since you’re enjoying the foam roller lately…this morning in my yoga class, the instructor handed out foam rollers and had us lie on our backs with the roller under our spines – vertically, not horizontally, if that makes sense. No need to roll over it, just allow your body to relax over the roller. If your roller is long enough, you should try it – it felt SO good! It was really great to open up the upper back & shoulders!
Kath says
I’ve heard of that! I need to buy one 🙂
Cyndi says
Haha – the “everything” – !!
I want one of those! What’s not to love?
Kath – your blog is great. I find that so many food/nutrition blogs are so copy cat and mildly childish. Thanks for being a little more grown up, but with a dash of fun. I can always count on you for good information.
Kath says
Thanks 🙂

Our local co-op does the same thing and occasionally I like to hit them up for lunch. Such fun combination.

When I lived in Tampa I worked at an awesome health-food store called Abby’s health and nutrition (anyone heard of it??)
I used to love love love getting juices from the deli. I never ever had a bad one no matter what combo of fruits and veggies I got. The best part was that I got an employee discount on everything.
Even funnier is that I was overweight then so that just goes to show you that you can gain excess fat from “health food” just like other foods.
Jil says
Ooo that place sounds absolutely awesome. There used to be an amazing juice place near my old house in Vermont…unfortunately they went out of business. Boo. I have yet to find a good place in Boston!
Jenn (www. j3nn.net ) says
Cute lunch wagon!!! 😀 I think I would have gotten a fruity drink + wrap with beans. Wish we had something that awesome close by.

Wow – that is an intense veggie juice! I used to order carrot and beet juices all the time when I was a kid – now I think it’s kinda funny that I was 11 and ordering veggie juices… I got out of the habit though, whoops!
Stacey says
You are right down the road from me! Sometimes I walk to Berrybrook farm while the kiddos I nanny for are in preschool 🙂 That little place is so cute, I love the creaky wooden floors.
Hope you get your internet fixed soon, that would be such a pain in the a** to have to deal with.
Anne P says
Mmm LOVE liquorice!!! Black jelly beans are my favorite 🙂
