I feel like I could start every lunch post I’m here with “Popping in to say hello!’” Because that’s what it’s like. I’m in and out of our office all day, running around here and there.
I’ve never experienced intuitive eating as much as this. Arrive at work. Get distracted. Eat breakfast. Work until you realize you need nourishment. Eat lunch. Work until you realize your stomach is growling again. Have a quarter of savannah bar or slice of bread. Bike home. Eat dinner. They say most Great Harvest owners lose weight when they open despite being surrounded by delicious bread + sweets. There just isn’t time to sit around munching!
A little preplanning to make this salad was SOOO worth the Sunday afternoon kitchen work. It totally hit the spot!! Recipe here –> Lemony Lentil Salad.
So did my first taste of Cosmic Brownie! After watching customers eat the drippy chocolate chips all morning, I needed to give it a taste. Perfection!!
Have a great afternoon!
Sarah@The Flying ONION says
Fabulous! To both the lentil salad and to the brownie. Looks like the perfect summer’s lunch. 😀
Claire @ Live and Love to Eat says
Wonderful balance of veggies and chocolate – perfect RD lesson =)
Annette @ EnjoyYourHealthyLife says
Mmm I want to make a lentil salad now too….p.s. the bakery looks great!
Holly @ The Runny Egg says
The cosmic brownie looks so good!
When I’m busy at work I can easily forget to eat my snacks or lunch — but when I’m not busy then all I can do is think about my next meal. I’m not surprised you’ve been waiting until your stomach growls! There seems to be so much to do!
Ellie@fitforthesoul says
oh woww that’s interesting!! you know what? I think it’s true b/c many pastry chefs actually lose weight b/c they’re around the sweets so much that they kind of get tired of it. have a beautiful day Kath!
lynn @ the actor's diet says
being so busy is wonderful – especially when you love what you’re doing!
Krissy @ Shiawase Life says
Yeah! That brownie was amazing the other day. I loved the small size they were cut in – perfect treat. When we come in and take some home sometime, I’ll be sure to cut them small like that =)
Cait's Plate says
I know – there’s really nothing like a busy schedule to help with intuitive eating! It’s the best! (Except when the busy schedule doesn’t allow you to eat – then it’s bad!) And holy yum – that cosmic brownie looks AMAZING!!
Kate (What Kate is Cooking) says
I used to work in a cafe and ate pastries day and night! You have much more self control than me 🙂
Hillary [Nutrition Nut on the Run] says
That brownie looks like heaven!!
Jenny @ Fitness Health and Food says
oh my goodness that cosmic brownie does look amazing! 🙂
I can totally understand the weight loss, I lost 5 pounds during my first week as a breakfast line cook! 😛
Good luck! 🙂
Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday says
The cosmic brownie looks awesome.
Chloe (South Beach Girl) says
Yum to the lentil salad AND the brownie! A perfect mix of healthy and indulgent 🙂 I’ll definitely be making the lentil salad soon.
Averie @ Love Veggies and Yoga says
Oh that cosmic brownie had me at hello!
“There just isn’t time to sit around munching!”– that’s so true when life is BUSY and you’re running here and there and every where! Glad that things at the bakery are going so wonderfully!!
Katie @ Nourishing Flourishing says
I can remember losing weight once when I worked at a restaurant — on your feet all day, and you have to keep go, go, going! All the best to you guys as you work through this busy busy time 🙂
Christina says
I think I’ll drive all the way up there just so I can have some of that brownie! Mmmm!
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
Yum, really want that brownie now! I lost weight while waitressing in the summer despite eating the food because I was CONSTANTLY walking/running from table to the kitchen.
Amanda (Eating Up) says
When I worked in retail, I had the same experience of intuitive eating. I really enjoyed it! That’s why I like to keep busy. If I do nothing all day, I’m more tempted to constantly want to eat…even when I’m not hungry!
Morgan @ moments of mmm says
Browning looks amazing!!
I would think at first that the weight thing would be opposite when opening a bakery! But it makes sense because you are so crazy, ridiculously busy!
Morgan @ moments of mmm says

Anna @ Newlywed, Newly Veg says
It must be strange to have such a different schedule all of a sudden!! Sounds like you’re rolling with it though 🙂
Emily says
Your blog is making me hungry! I need to make a trip to GH in Burlington, VT ASAP! Great job with the store!
Allison @ Happy Tales says
I think working to please the public does that to you… you’re always “on” and you don’t have a set schedule. That’s what I’ve found, at least! I can totally relate. Just don’t let your blood sugar drop to low!
Tori (Fresh Fruition) says
That brownie looks to die for. Yummy! I wish I could have a bite!
Hope says
That brownie looks so good! 🙂 I’m loving everything that you are featuring from your store! I definitely need to visit! 🙂
Estela @ Weekly Bite says
I want one of those brownies!!
So glad to hear the store is doing well 🙂
Michelle @ Turning Over a New Leaf says
I can definitely attest that I feel more “intuitive” about my eating habits when I’m busy! I think that’s the key! I’ve got a desk job right now, so I’m constantly munching out of boredom, but on the rare days I’m physically on-my-feet busy all day, I only eat when I realize, “hey, my stomach’s growling!” or “hey! I haven’t eaten in eight hours! Maybe I should find dinner…”
When I visited Central Europe this past March, we were so busy being shoveled from one place to another with performances and sight-seeing that we rarely kept to traditional meal times. And my appetite threw me for a loop while there, and I really only ate when I was hungry, and only enough to satisfy. And I only ate what I was in the mood for, which ended up being stuff like Nutella crepes from a street cart in Prague or a custard-filled pastry at a convenience store en route to Vienna. And despite the plethora of pastries, potatoes, and pasta I had on that trip, I left after the end of the week with loose pants. Some might say it was the extra activity. I was wearing my pedometer the whole time and my daily activity only marginally increased and was not enough to account for the loss. But when I actually wrote down everything I (remembered) eating, I ended up eating about 200-400 calories FEWER than I normally do on any given day!
Katelyn @ Chef Katelyn says
Dang, I am soooo making that salad! I am all on lemons these days. Also I noticed that too when I worked at Panera — you really don’t have time to think about munching until your tummy tells you to!
Kristin @ STUFT Mama says
The salad looks delicious. And the brownie- oh my. I would NOT be able to eat just one small one. Hang in there busy woman! 🙂
Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope says
There might not be a moment to eat, but at least you know business is booming that way. 😉 I’m sure things will calm down once you get into the swing of things, but sounds so exciting either way!
Fabulous lunch to hold you over and hit the spot!
J3nn(Jenn's Menu and Lifestyle Blog) says
The brownie was well deserved! 🙂
Cait @ Beyond Bananas says
Hard to imagine that being surrounded by bread .. you would end up losing weight.. but seeing how busy and on the run you seem to be… I totally get it! Keep rockin’ it, Kath!
The Healthy Engineer says
Strangely, when I am at college I feel the same way about eating! You have classes and work to fill up the day, and you basically eat every meal with someone, so you end up never really obsessing about food. Also, just having to share a mini fridge with someone else really limited how much food I could keep in the room, which turned out to be a good thing!
And now that I am at home and blogging, food def. comes up in my thoughts more.
Joanne says
Wow! Please send samples of the Cosmic Brownie. 😉

Bringing the lentil salad is a great idea and a good change of pace from the baked goods. That said, the brownie sure looks delish =)
kelly says
I totally understand the intuitve eating – I just started a new job. For the 1st time ever I forget to eat during the day! I finally had to practically put my sandwich within view so I would remember – even then sometimes lunch is at 3:30!
Jil @ Big City, Lil Kitchen says
Yum!! Looks so good!
Reading (and chickens) says
I have no clue how you manage it all, short blog post or not. Good for you! I envy your multi-tasking skills and energy!
Gina (Yogattude) says
I prepped a bunch of food yesterday and am so glad I did. I have so much less stress throughout the week and packing my lunch becomes so much easier!
Katherina @ Zephyr Runs says
Seeing the size of your brownie makes me want to adjust our sweets portions at my cafe… I think people usually just want a bit of sweet to satisfy a craving, not necessarily a lot of sweet!
KathEats says
That’s just a quarter of a brownie!
Robyn @ Blueberries and Oats says
I love being so busy I have no time for munching! Really gets you to listen to your stomach instead of mindless eating.
I need to get crackin’ on making more lunches ready to go! More inspiring recipes plz! (when you have time of course…~.^)
Angel7 says
You should set your watch, phone, or whatever to go off when it is time to eat 🙂 This way your body never has a chance to say “Give me food!” 🙂

Molly @ RDexposed says
Isn’t it torture discussing/serving food when you’re starving? I hate when my stomach is grumbling during an outpt appointment-all I’m doing is talking about food!
Vanessa says
The salad looks delicious. I am definitely putting that one on my to-try menu this week!

Kim says
The bakery looks great! My sandwich was perfect — and I usually don’t even like hummus!! I can’t wait to start nibbling on all of the sweets I brought back to share.
Allie (Live Laugh Eat) says
I lost so much wait waitressing, despite eating calzones the size of my head and fried zucchini allll day long. I walked MILES around the restaurant though. Despite snacking a little at the bakery, I do eat a lot less than when I’m at home. The problem is when I come home and I have all these beautiful sweets sitting next to me :).
Betty says
Hopefully the new normal with a more predictable rythym (sp) to your day will kick in soon. A day will never be totally predictable, but maybe a little more than now.
How’s Matt doing? and Karen – stinks she wasn’t feeling well enough to feel festive with y’all.
Thinking of her.
KathEats says
They are both well 🙂
Julia says
Your lentil salad inspired our dinner! Thanks!
Gretchen says
If only I could reach through the screen and grab that brownie! It looks delicious!
Kayla @ Sprouty Buns says
I just looked at the Great Harvest franchise information (out of curiosity) and the closest bakery is 182 miles away :(. Do you know if they are building more bakeries? I would love (for someone) to open one in Dallas!
KathEats says
There aren’t corporate stores – that’s why it’s a freedom franchise. You have to encourage your friends to open one in your town!

the HLS link didn’t work but this one does:http://healthylivingsummit.com/2011
KathEats says
I think everyone crashed it..
Mary Frances says
Well, if there is T H A T much interest, it sells out in minutes and there are so many people trying to get tickets that the website crashes, maybe next year you can plan a larger main group event with several smaller (repeated) break away one hour sessions for people to sign up for throughout the day. While the presenters will miss the other presentations, a greater number of people will be able to attend and gain a lot from the experience. Also, you could professionally videotape the program and sell DVDs for those who could not attend. Who knows, you could have over a thousand people signing up which surely would attract lots more big sponsors!
Julie says
I am a long time reader but never comment. I just wanted to say congratulations on your bakery opening. It looks like you’ve really done an excellent job. The bakery is gorgeous and your products are truly mouthwatering. I wish there was a Great Harvest where I live (Orlando). Best of luck with the business. With your passion and integrity I’m certain it will be a huge success.
KathEats says
Thanks!
J says
Hey I have to tell you. I tried the roasted potato, green bean & yogurt cold salad finally, and my husband and I looove it! We’re having it again this week! Thanks for the recipe. PS we remembered to add the bacon, and boy did it add layers of flavor.

Khushboo says
Being busy is the true test of intuitive eating- eat for nourishment not boredom! Love the look of the lentils…and brownie but that’s a given 😉
leatitia says
Ahaha… Your “Perfection!” comment made me laugh because last night I watched an old episode of Friends – the one where Chandler is stuck in a ATM vestibule with Gill.. something (a model I think).
She asks him and he’d like gum? And he answers: “Gum is perfection!”
and we can hear what he thinks after saying that “I could have said Gum would be nice, but no! For me, Gum is PERFECTION!”
LOL 🙂
Nicole says
The brownies look INSANE!! What’s in them?? Can you share the recipe??
KathEats says
Walnuts + choco chips!
I can’t ever share the recipes for anything made at Great Harvest..
Selena says
Can you share with other GH owners? You have some things our doesn’t, and I’d love to see them in my local store…
KathEats says
Yes I can – just have them email me for something
